Square spotlight: the grid of light that draws the ceiling

Align the grid of square spotlights with the lines of the room, not with the centre of the ceiling: the front of a piece of furniture, the edge of a wall, a slab joint. Space the points about half the floor-to-ceiling height apart. Before drilling, check that the cutout falls in a void, never on a joist.

How do you arrange square spotlights on a ceiling?

Draw the lines of the room, then lay the grid of square spotlights parallel to the longest one. The first point sits at about one third of the width, the last at the same distance from the opposite wall. A regular grid matters more than a high number of spotlights.

Square ceiling spotlight: align the grid with the lines of the room

A square spotlight creates a direction: it should follow the axis of the gaze, the edge of a wall or the front of a piece of furniture. A grid placed on the centre of the ceiling looks like it is floating. For a living room lighting project, start from the lines of the floor and work up to the ceiling.

The eye follows a line before it follows a point. The edge of a wall or the front of a piece of furniture is often enough.

When several spotlights form a line, a spotlight bar simplifies alignment: the modules share the same axis and the same distance from the wall.

Distance between ceiling spotlight and wall: the measurement that avoids the patch

Set the first spotlight away from the wall so that it lights the surface without casting a vertical patch. The measurement depends on the floor-to-ceiling height and the depth of the furniture. Above a worktop, set it back further.

Our guide on the distance between ceiling spotlight and wall details the measurement for a bed, a desk or a kitchen worktop.

  • Cutout: the square template falls in a void, not on a joist.
  • Cable: the available length reaches the box without tension.
  • Grid: the points stay aligned on the chosen line, even near the corners.

Square spotlight: three mountings, three ceilings

Recessed square spotlight Surface-mounted square spotlight Spotlight bar on track
What the ceiling needs A false ceiling or a recess at least as deep as the fixture A solid slab, a wooden ceiling or a false ceiling A track fixed to the ceiling, with no cutout
Cutout Square cutout with the template, jigsaw or hole saw No cutout, two screws No cutout, the track is screwed to the ceiling
Changing the light source From the front if the ring opens, otherwise the fixture has to be removed From the front, without tools From the front, spotlight by spotlight
Protection rating to aim for IP20 in a dry room, IP44 and higher near a water point IP20 indoors in dry areas, IP65 outdoors Depending on the room, often IP20
Survey of 25 October 2026 on 31 references from our Spotlight bar collection 3% of references declare a recessed mounting 90% of references declare a surface-mounted fixing 6% of references declare a track mounting
Effect on the ceiling A discreet grid, aligned with the lines of the room A visible, deliberate graphic rhythm A continuous line, adjustable point by point

How many spotlights should you plan per m² and per room?

The how many spotlights per m² rule gives an order of magnitude, not a grid ready to install. Count one point per 1.5 to 2 m², then adjust according to lumens and height. A 12 m² bedroom is often satisfied with two to four spotlights.

  • Bedroom: two to four points, preferably around the edges.
  • Kitchen: higher density over the worktops.
  • Living room: a broad grid, completed by additional light.

The surface area gives an order of magnitude. The height and the colour of the walls change the result.

How many spotlights in a bedroom?

Two to four spotlights are often enough in a 12 to 15 m² bedroom. Place them around the edges to light the room without casting a shadow on the bed.

If the ceiling has no false ceiling, a bedroom ceiling light replaces the recessed grid and keeps a clear central point.

Kitchen ceiling spotlights: density follows the worktops

In a kitchen, density follows the worktops: light the surface, not the floor. One point above each useful area is better than a grid in the centre.

On a ceiling with no recess, an LED ceiling light completes the general light and lets the spotlights focus on the worktops.

In a living room, the grid can stay broad. The general light should not turn the ceiling into a grid.

A living room ceiling light can hold the centre, while square spotlights highlight the walls and furniture.

Recessed or surface-mounted square spotlight: what does your ceiling allow?

Recessed requires a void and a square cutout; surface-mounted fixes to the surface and accepts a solid slab. A track adds a line without drilling the ceiling, but stays visible. Look at what your ceiling hides, not only at how it looks.

What depth for a recessed spotlight?

The usable depth is given on the spotlight's data sheet. Allow for the height of the body, the space for the connector and the bend of the cable. A recessed square spotlight may need more room than a round one of the same power.

The drilling diameter also counts: a square is cut with a template, not with a drill bit. Our guide on the drilling diameter details the measurement to transfer.

Concrete terrace, slab, loft: the cases where recessed does not work

On a concrete terrace, a solid slab or a lost loft space, recessed does not work without a recess. The surface-mounted square spotlight becomes the clean solution, provided the cable and the sealing are done properly.

  • Solid slab: no void, surface-mounted or track takes over.
  • Lost loft space: check the space before drilling.
  • Concrete terrace: water and dust require a suitable protection rating.

For outdoors and damp rooms, choosing a waterproof spotlight comes down to the IP rating, not the shape. A white surface-mounted square spotlight can stay discreet.

In a survey of 31 references from the Spotlight bar collection on 25 October 2026, 90% declare a surface-mounted fixing, 6% on track, 3% recessed. IP20 is declared on 100% of the survey. These proportions describe this survey, not the whole catalogue.

Mounting What the ceiling must accept When to choose it
Recessed Void and square cutout False ceiling or reserved slab
Surface-mounted Surface fixing Solid slab, loft, concrete
On track Profile fixed to the ceiling Need to move the points

The chosen mounting determines the depth and the cutout. An on-site check is better than a data sheet alone.

Installers will find the measurements in the trade area.

The final check is done with the template and the spotlight's data sheet.

Once the mounting is decided, the selection of recessed spotlights gives the models that accept the cutout and the depth.

In which room are you installing your spotlight grid?

What drives the price of a square spotlight, and what makes it last

The price of a square spotlight comes down to the module, the finish and the warranty, not the size alone. A replaceable socket sometimes costs more to buy, but avoids changing the whole fixture. The real lifespan depends on cooling and the driver.

  • GU10: replaceable bulb, standard socket.
  • Integrated LED: sealed module, complete replacement.
  • Warranty: 2 years on most of the survey, 5 years on a minority.

GU10 or integrated LED spotlight: what changes on replacement day

A square LED spotlight with a GU10 socket is replaced bulb by bulb. An integrated LED module is changed as a whole, with the original colour temperature and power.

GU10 bulbs remain easy to find and to upgrade in colour temperature. A white square spotlight with GU10 gets a second life.

The integrated module often offers a finer line. In return, the reference must be kept.

Our guide GU10 or GU5.3 spotlight helps compare sockets before fixing the grid.
