Grey light fixtures: choosing the shade and height for each room

Choose the material before the colour: brushed metal, smoked glass and grey fabric do not reflect light in the same way. Across 250 product pages in our catalogue recorded on 24 October 2026, grey does not appear among the four most-declared colours (gold 58%, black 55%, white 46%, beige 15%). All the more reason to install it with full knowledge of the facts.

Light grey, anthracite or smoked: which tone for which room?

Light grey lightens a room with white walls, anthracite gives structure to an already colourful living room, smoked glass softens the light as it passes through. The tone is decided in relation to the wall and the ceiling height, never in relation to the colour of the furniture.

Grey is first read within a family of shapes: from ceiling light to floor lamp, the lighting collection lets you compare a pendant fitting and a wall fitting in a similar tone, side by side.

  • Light grey in a hallway, entrance or small bedroom, where a dark fixture would eat into the space.
  • Anthracite in a living room, open kitchen or in front of a glass partition: it frames the room and marks the axis of the table.
  • Smoked above a table or in a reading corner: the tinted glass softens the bulb and lowers the light level without a dimmer.
Tone Room Effect Material that carries it
Light grey Bedroom, hallway, entrance Lightens, blends into the wall Painted metal, fabric
Anthracite Living room, open kitchen Structure, marked contrast Metal, aluminium
Smoked Dining room, reading Softens, enveloping light Glass

A lampshade is chosen by diameter before colour: the selection of grey lampshades ranges from the small bedside module to the large pendant cone.

In which room does the grey light fixture need to work in your home?

A grey light fixture in the bedroom: what light from the bed?

Aim for 2700 K and a dimmable intensity, with a shade that hangs low: lying down, you should not see the source. Light grey or smoked glass diffuses better than a glossy anthracite, which throws a bright spot onto the wall.

  • 2700 K for evening light, the only one that does not disrupt falling asleep.
  • Dimmer declared on 25% of the 250 product pages recorded: ask for it explicitly, the bulb must support it.
  • Low shade and opaque on top: the light falls towards the floor, not towards the pillow.

Grey shares the bedroom with white without ever competing with it, provided both keep the same white temperature: see the white light fixture guide to match the two.

Two wall lights often replace bedside lamps and free up the shelf: the selection of grey bedside lamps gives the scale, from the small module to the arm-mounted model.

On the wall, a grey wall light placed at shoulder height lights the page without dazzling the person next to you.

Kitchen and rectangular table: what length of grey light fixture?

Allow one third to one half of the tabletop length: on a 180 cm table, a pendant of 60 to 90 cm aligns along the axis. The diameter of a round model is only useful for round tables. Two small spaced-out modules work just as well as one large one.

Out of the 37,868 references in our Alternative to Luminaire.fr collection on 24 October 2026, pendant fittings account for 45% of the 250 product pages recorded, wall fittings 36%: the range leans clearly towards pendants.

  • Length: one third of the tabletop for a compact model, half for a model that takes the centre.
  • Axis: centre of the tabletop, never offset towards the walkway.
  • Two pendants: gap equal to the width of one module, to avoid the gap effect.

Above a rectangular table, an elongated model can be found in the dining room chandelier selection and compared at eye level, on a wide shot.

The full method, from measuring the tabletop to choosing the diffuser, is detailed in the guide to the dining room pendant.

At what height should a grey light fixture be hung without getting it wrong?

Allow 70 to 80 cm between the bottom of the shade and the tabletop, 2.10 m under the lowest point in a walkway, and 1.50 to 1.70 m for a bedside wall light. Three reference points are enough: colour does not change the measurement, but a dark tone does visually lower it.

  • 70 to 80 cm above a table: you can see faces, you do not get the bulb in your eyes.
  • 2.10 m from the floor in a hallway or entrance, lowest point included.
  • 1.50 to 1.70 m for a bedside wall light, above the mattress.
  • 5 cm more for anthracite than for light grey: the visual mass sits lower, so you need to compensate.

On a wall, the measurement cannot be guessed: the guide to the height of a wall light gives the reference points room by room.

Metal, glass or fabric: which material carries the grey, and what to check before ordering?

Metal gives a crisp, directional grey, smoked glass a translucent grey, fabric a grey that diffuses. In the 250 product pages recorded on 24 October 2026, metal is declared on 85% of pages, glass on 40%, aluminium on 32%. What remains is to check the IP rating, bulb base, dimmer and warranty.

  • IP20 on 94% of the sample: sufficient everywhere except in wet rooms; allow IP44 in the bathroom.
  • Bulb base: E27 on 26% of the sample, LED on 21%, E14 on 17%, GU10 on 11%. The base determines the bulb, and therefore the final colour.
  • Dimmer: declared on 25% of pages, absent on 16%. Check before buying the bulb.
  • Warranty: 2 years on 89% of the sample. Painted grey holds its colour, but the finish still needs to be covered.

Smoked glass is chosen for what it lets through: smoked glass wall lights show how the tint changes once switched on.

Style follows material: a fine metal frame and a simple volume belong to minimalist lighting, which accepts grey without making it sad.

For installers confirming the choice in front of a client, the technical data sheet can be cross-checked from our trade area.

Six points to check on the product page before ordering a grey light fixture

  • Read the declared material (metal, glass, aluminium) before settling on the tone
  • Check the IP rating: a dry room is fine with IP20, a damp area requires IP44 or IP65
  • Note the bulb base: E27, E14, GU10 or integrated LED determine the bulb
  • Check dimmer compatibility if you want to lower the light in the evening
  • Measure the clear height between the bottom of the fixture and the table or worktop
  • Look at the stated warranty and the CE certification on the product page

Grey light fixtures: the questions that keep coming up

Which light fixture for the bedroom?
A matt light grey, as a surface-mounted ceiling light or a wall light, with light around 2700 K. The light tone avoids a dark mass above the bed, and the wall light frees up the bedside table.
What size of light fixture for a bedroom?
The fixture should stay narrower than the furniture it hangs over and leave the wall around it breathing. Light grey forgives a slightly larger room; anthracite does not: in a small bedroom, it visually shrinks the space.
Which light fixture for a living room?
A pendant or chandelier in anthracite grey above the table, and wall lights for the walls. Grey metal absorbs the evening reflections without gilding the room, unlike brass finishes.
Which light fixture above a rectangular table?
A long piece, aligned with the axis of the table, rather than a diameter. Anthracite grey in matt metal structures the line; smoked glass softens it but lets less light through.
Which light fixture for a sloped ceiling?
Forget the pendant with a fixed cable: favour the wall light or the adjustable ceiling light, which follows the slope without hanging crooked. Matt light grey is less noticeable on a dark slope.
