Entryway lighting: pendant, wall light or ceiling light?

First measure the ceiling height. Above 2.60 m, a pendant or a chandelier; below that, a ceiling light or recessed spotlights. Mount the wall light 1.70 m from the floor and the entryway pendant 2.10 m above the walkway. Aim for 2700 to 3000 K for a warm welcome.

Which light for an entryway?

An entryway under 6 m² is best handled with a ceiling light or spotlights, to keep the walkway clear. Above 2.60 m of ceiling height, a pendant structures the volume. The wall light complements both and dresses the wall. A light fixture means the complete unit, body, socket and diffuser; the bulb is chosen afterwards.

Which light for which entryway?

Pendant Wall light Ceiling light Recessed spotlights
Ceiling height 2.50 m and above any height under 2.40 m low ceiling or long hallway
Footprint in the walkway keeps the walls clear protrudes 15 to 25 cm flush with the ceiling none
Light produced focal point and halo decorative accent general lighting even wash of light
Reference mounting height adjustable drop, bottom above 2.10 m 1.60 to 1.70 m from the floor on the ceiling recessed into the ceiling
Recommended colour temperature 2700 to 3000 K 2700 to 3000 K 3000 K 3000 K
Ideal if the entryway has volume and a point to highlight the wall is free and the room is narrow the ceiling is low the walkway is long and without corners

These three families cover almost every entryway. When the entryway, hallway and staircase follow one another, an entryway and hallway lighting project treats the whole passage rather than an isolated point, and that is where the number of light sources is decided.

Modern entryway hall light

The hall is the room where you do not stop: the light must read in a second, without dazzling eyes still adapted to daylight. A single central point leaves the corners in shadow.

  • Over 2.60 m: a pendant, if no one walks underneath
  • Low volume: flush ceiling light or recessed spotlights
  • Free wall: a wall light at 1.70 m, aimed towards the floor
  • Mirror or console: side lighting, never directly in the line of sight

In a survey of 250 references from our catalogue on 12 October 2026, 81% have a modern style and 58% a gold colour. Easy-to-match models are therefore in the majority: the entryway lighting collection can be browsed by mounting type, hanging, wall-mounted or surface-mounted, and by style.

Entryway hallway pendant

In a hallway, the pendant is hung high and repeated rather than left alone in the centre. It sets the rhythm of the route; it does not light it on its own.

  • High ceiling: two or three small pendants in a row are better than one large one
  • Narrow hallway: the wall light comes first, the pendant reduces circulation
  • Visible bulb: filament with an E27 base for a warm result
  • Dimmer: only 25% of the survey offers one, check the product page

Our pendant light is chosen first by the diameter of the shade and the length of the cable, two dimensions that determine the final height.

How can you make an entryway hallway brighter?

Light the walls rather than the floor: two wall lights facing each other, or one every 2 to 3 m, erase the tunnel effect. Add a low point near the entryway furniture. Stay around 2700 K: a hallway gains more from distributed light than from concentrated power.

What is the layout of your entryway?

Apartment entryway light

In an apartment, the hallway is rarely wider than 1.20 m: a pendant becomes an obstacle there and recessed lighting is essential when the ceiling is low.

  • Under 1.20 m wide: wall light and spotlights, no pendant
  • Low ceiling: flush recessed, at least two points
  • No ceiling supply: wired or rechargeable wall light
  • Windowless hallway: light walls and light bounced upwards

When the ceiling cannot take anything, the solution moves elsewhere: see how to light a room without a ceiling light.

Entryway ceiling light

The ceiling light is the simplest choice when the walkway is narrow: it does not drop into the circulation. For a long hallway, hallway lighting with spotlights distributes light better than a single point.

A slim LED ceiling light covers the whole surface without drilling into the ceiling.

On the wall side, a double wall light every 2 m guides your step without lighting the whole hallway: wall lights for hallways are mounted at 1.70 m.

At what height should you mount a wall light or hang a pendant?

Mount the wall light 1.70 m from the floor, and 1.80 m if the hallway is wider than 1.20 m. The entryway pendant is fixed at 2.10 m above the walkway, 2.20 m if people walk right underneath. Under a shade, keep 75 to 85 cm down to the furniture.

Wall light height

This dimension is set by eye level, never by the chance position of a cable outlet. Too high, the wall light lights the ceiling; too low, it dazzles.

Location Centre height Why
Passage hallway 1.70 m At eye level, without dazzling
Wide hallway 1.80 m Compensates for the distance from the opposite wall
Above a console 1.50 to 1.60 m The furniture already provides the low light

Wall lights for entryways come in single or double versions; the double lights both directions of travel from a single point.

The dimension also changes with the room: bedroom, staircase and landing do not call for the same reference point, as our article on wall light height shows.

House entryway pendant

In a house, a pendant is judged by its distance from the floor, not by the look of the cable.

  • 2.10 m: standard height for a walkway
  • 2.20 m: if people walk right underneath
  • 75 to 85 cm: between the bottom of the shade and a piece of furniture
  • Adjustable cable: essential to adjust after painting

If you would rather have the mounting height and the number of light points validated before ordering, our contact page puts an adviser on your entryway plan.

Are 1000 lumens enough to light an entryway well?

Yes for an entryway of around 10 m², provided the light is distributed. Allow close to 100 lumens per m²: 1000 lumens cover 10 m². An entryway of 6 m² is fine with 600 to 800 lumens. Two sources of 500 are better than one of 1000 placed alone.

Which colour temperature: 2700, 3000 or 4000 K?

2700 K welcomes, 3000 K stays neutral, 4000 K makes things visible without warmth. In an entryway, the choice comes down to what the room must say in a second.

Temperature Rendering Where to use it
2700 K Warm white House entryway, hall, hallway
3000 K Neutral white Modern apartment entryway
4000 K Cool white Cupboard, utility room, basement

The doubt between warm white and cool white is quickly settled: our article white or yellow light details the rendering room by room.

Is IP20 enough in an entryway?

Yes in almost every case: in the survey of 250 references on 12 October 2026, 94% are IP20. This rating protects against contact and dust, not water.

  • IP20: entryway, hall, hallway, sheltered landing
  • IP44: semi-covered entryway, under a canopy
  • IP65: outdoors exposed to rain
  • Base: E27 and E14 can be replaced, GU10 stays directional

The base also determines the result: in the same survey, 26% mention E27 and 21% an integrated LED source. The choice of bulb types therefore determines what follows.

For a walkway, an LED wall light saves you having to change the bulb in a place where you do not linger.

To check before ordering

  • Measure the ceiling height and the width of the walkway
  • Locate the electrical supply: ceiling box or wall point
  • Check the socket base already in place: E27, E14 or GU10
  • Plan several points rather than a single central one if the walkway is more than a few metres long
  • Choose a dimmable bulb if the entryway also serves as a night light
  • Stay at IP20 minimum for sheltered indoor use

These reference points remain theoretical: the selection is reviewed by buyers, and the Designix Google listing lets you check it in one click.

Your questions about entryway lighting

Which light for an entryway?
Under 2.40 m of ceiling height, a ceiling light or spotlights keep the walkway clear. Above that, a pendant marks the focal point. A wall light mounted between 1.60 and 1.70 m from the floor completes the set without encroaching on circulation.
How can I make my hallway brighter?
Spread several light points along the hallway rather than a single one in the centre, keeping the same colour temperature from one end to the other. Lighting the far wall, and not just the floor, visually enlarges the passage.
Are 1000 lumens enough to light well?
It all depends on the surface area: at 100 lux, a hall of 6 m² needs around 600 lumens and 1000 lumens cover about 10 m². Beyond that, it is better to distribute two sources than to increase the power of a single point.
What are some lighting ideas for a hallway?
Staggered wall lights, small ceiling lights in a row, recessed spotlights in a line, or a pendant above a console. In our catalogue, 139 products are listed for the Entryway room and 138 for the Hallway room.
What are the decor trends for hallways in 2026?
Soft shapes and warm materials: globe and tube shapes, gold and black colours. In a survey of 250 product pages from our catalogue on 12 October 2026, 30% declare a globe shape and 28% a tube shape.
