Acoustic lighting for open-plan offices: less noise

The din of an open-plan office is as tiring as the workload itself. Both good news and a false promise: an acoustic light fixture absorbs a portion of the reverberation, but it does not reduce noise on its own. The real gain comes from the entire room, not a single pendant light.

How to reduce noise in an open-plan office?

Reducing noise relies on two distinct levers: acoustic correction, which absorbs reverberation inside the room, and sound insulation, which blocks sounds coming from outside. In an open-plan space, correction is what pays off most: soft surfaces, textiles, absorbent furniture, and lighting designed for visual comfort.

Confusing the two leads to useless purchases. Correction acts within the room, on the echo that bounces off glass, concrete, and metal. Insulation, on the other hand, prevents sound from passing through a partition.

Multiplying absorbent surfaces (carpeting, curtains, felt panels) breaks up reverberation. In parallel, equipping each workstation with a desk light with stable light reduces visual fatigue, without claiming to absorb anything.

The logic remains the same when you want to set up a workspace: acoustics, light, and the layout of workstations must be thought of together.

Is an acoustic light fixture enough to reduce noise?

No, a light fixture alone does not reduce noise in a measurable way. A so-called acoustic model incorporates recycled felt or stretched fabric that traps a portion of high frequencies, but real absorption happens at the scale of the room. A pendant light remains above all a light source.

The material decides everything. Felt and stretched fabric dampen sound; metal, glass, and aluminum reflect it. A beautiful metal piece provides perfect lighting without absorbing anything.

Our own data confirms this: based on a survey of 249 pendant lights in our catalog as of September 19, 2026, 85% carry the LED label and 91% are made of metal. A designer pendant is therefore not acoustic by nature. It remains a light fixture: its primary function is to provide light.

The acoustic gain comes from elsewhere. Combining natural and absorbent materials (wood, linen, felt) with hard surfaces restores balance much better than an isolated light object.

How to choose a light fixture for a noisy open-plan office?

Aim for visual comfort, not an acoustic promise. A neutral white at the workstation keeps the eye alert, direct lighting without glare protects screens, and a CE-certified, low-consumption LED source lasts over time. The shape and style then follow your floor plan.

What is your situation for lighting your open-plan office?

Three criteria are decisive. Color temperature: a neutral white limits fatigue during the day. Orientation: a direct flow above the work surface avoids reflections on screens. Technology: an IP20 LED source, CE-certified, is sufficient for indoor use. If your office still runs on halogen, switching to all-LED reduces heat and consumption.

Above a shared table, a luminous designer pendant structures the zone and defines usage. For more homogeneous direct lighting on a large floor, a flush-mount ceiling lamp covers the surface without multiplying light sources.

Regarding placement, distribute light points to avoid both dark areas and glare. Balancing multiple pendants above workstations is better than one single, poorly placed central source.

Successfully lighting a quieter open-plan office

  • Identify hard surfaces that reflect sound: glass, concrete, screens, large tables
  • Light each workstation from above to avoid screen glare
  • Prioritize absorbent material (felt, stretched fabric) where possible
  • Choose a neutral white for work, more restful than cold white
  • Complement with rugs, curtains, and partitions: the light fixture alone is not enough
  • Check the ingress protection (IP) rating and CE certification of the fixtures

What are the drawbacks of an open-plan office, and where does lighting help?

The open-plan office costs you in concentration, privacy, and sound comfort. Lighting does not eliminate any of these flaws, but it does mitigate one: uniform light without glare reduces the visual fatigue that adds to the noise. The rest is handled by acoustics and the organization of workstations.

The most common complaint remains the loss of concentration. Many people are switching to a home office to regain peace a few days a week.

Where light truly acts is on eye comfort: a stable source helps to gain in concentration despite the coming and going. A minimalist approach, clean lines and sober tones, also calms a floor already saturated with sound.

Your questions about open-plan office noise

How can I reduce noise in an open-plan office?
We combine three levers: absorb (soft materials on the ceiling and walls), separate (partitions, plants), and mask (neutral background noise). An acoustic light fixture acts on the first lever, but alone it is not enough: the gain comes mainly from the overall treatment of the room.
What are the drawbacks of an open-plan office?
Noise and reverberation, lack of privacy, and difficulty concentrating are at the top of the list. Lighting often adds its share: screen glare and poorly distributed dark areas, which well-placed pendants correct.
What is the most effective sound insulation?
Distinguish between insulation (blocking noise from elsewhere, using mass) and correction (reducing echo in the room, using absorbent materials). In an open-plan office, acoustic correction is what counts most, and that is where felt panels and light fixtures come into play.
How do I soundproof a room from external noise?
Against external noise, we play on mass and airtightness: double glazing, seals, solid doors. An acoustic light fixture does not treat that noise; it reduces internal reverberation, not the passage of sound through walls.
