To light a worktop, a vintage pendant hangs low and directs light down onto the surface; over a table, it sits higher and can be multiplied. This collection brings together pendants in metal and glass, in ball, dome or tube shapes, with E27, E14, G9 or GU10 sockets and an IP20 rating.
How to choose a vintage kitchen pendant light
Start with use: a pendant above a worktop or an island concentrates light on a precise area, while a multi-point model lights the whole table. Then check the material, shape, diameter, E27, E14 or G9 socket and the IP20 rating.
The criteria that really matter
Four checks are enough before ordering. Diameter first: 15 to 30 cm above a worktop, 30 to 42 cm for a table, up to 65 cm over a large gathering. Material next, where metal and glass dominate by far, completed by aluminium, iron and brass. The socket decides which bulb you can fit, and IP20 the room where the fixture is allowed to live.
For a stronger golden tone, our brass and glass selection pushes the material further. If you prefer a softer, more diffuse light, look at the LED kitchen pendants.
Ball, dome or tube shape, which to choose?
The ball diffuses widely and suits tables and meals. The dome and the tube direct light downwards, which makes them ideal for the worktop. Our Olwen industrial dome spans 42 cm and lights a generous prep area.
Other materials completely change the look: wood models warm up a white kitchen, and woven rattan brings a more natural weave.
At what height should a vintage pendant hang above the table or worktop?
Height is set with the adjustable cable. In this collection, total heights range from 55.5 cm to 362.5 cm depending on the model, with common values around 120 cm or 150 cm on ball and dome formats. As a rule, aim for 70 to 80 cm above a worktop and 60 to 70 cm above a table.
Large chandelier for a high ceiling: how much cable should you allow?
On a ceiling of 3 m or more, a long-cable model is better than a short fixture extended with a rough chain. Our Dalmira pendant with cylindrical shades reaches a comfortable total height, which leaves room to spare above an island as well as a large table.
Adjustable pendants: how do you shorten the cable cleanly?
Cut the power at the breaker, push the excess cable back into the ceiling cup and keep a few centimetres in reserve so you can lower the fixture again later. The connection is made inside the housing, never in mid-air. To compare long-cable models, browse our lighting range.
Which pendant for which room: kitchen, dining room or living room?
Each room sets its own format: kitchen and dining room call for one or more pendants above the worktop or table, the living room for a wider model, the hallway or WC for a compact size. The whole collection is IP20, so it is reserved for dry rooms.
Can a living room chandelier light an open kitchen?
Yes, provided the diameter follows the length of the table and the cable allows it to hang low enough. Our Éclat Contemporain pendant comes in several diameters: the same design therefore suits a living room table as well as a long open-kitchen island.
Light for a WC: which format to choose?
A compact model that is easy to clean, a small ball or short cylinder, with a G9 or E14 socket. As the room is dry, IP20 is enough. For tight nearby spaces, the hallway pendants offer the same small diameters, and a wood version also works very well in a living room or bedroom.
| Room | What it lights | Formats in the collection | Available sockets | Dominant style |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Worktop, island, table | Ø 15 to 42 cm, up to 100 x 20 cm in linear version | E27, E14, G9, GU10 | Vintage, retro, industrial |
| Dining room | Table and meals | Ø 18 to 65 cm, one or more light points | E14, E27, G9 | Vintage, minimalist |
| Living room | Ambience and reading | Ø 30 to 42 cm, dome or ball | E27, G9 | Modern, contemporary |
| Hallway, corridor, workshop | Passage and accent light | Small diameters, adjustable cable | G9, E27 | Industrial, retro |
How do you match a vintage pendant with a modern kitchen decor?
Vintage blends with a modern kitchen decor in small touches: a golden pendant on matte cabinets, an opaline ball on light wood, a black dome on white. Keep one dominant family of materials and let the fixture create the contrast.
Golden or white pendants: what works with your cabinets?
Gold wakes up matte, white or beige fronts, and also works on light wood. On that same wood, a white kitchen pendant is more discreet and lets the light speak for itself. Black structures a white worktop, as our Olwen industrial dome shows. Pick one dominant colour and keep the other as a small accent.
Vintage leather armchair and pendant: which material pairings?
Patinated brown or cognac leather pairs with a golden or brass frame. The contrast holds as long as you do not add a very dark wood on top. Our Belara cut-glass pendant plays exactly that register, with its clear glass and brass frame.
To choose well, take material, diameter and socket into account: these criteria determine the style and the compatibility with your bulb.
Italian design kitchen pendant: which styles and finishes to look for?
The Italian style shows in the finishes: ribbed or fluted glass, cut carafe, brass, cylindrical shades and fine lines. A trendy ceiling light, by contrast, mounts close to the ceiling and suits low rooms. In the collection, these codes sit alongside retro and industrial.
Trendy kitchen ceiling light or pendant: what to choose?
Under a low ceiling, a ceiling light does not block movement in the room. A pendant brings the source closer to the worktop and lights better what you are cutting. Many adjustable-cable models serve both uses depending on the length you keep at installation, which leaves useful room to manoeuvre.
Ribbed glass, cut carafe, dome: the finishes that set the style
Ribbed and fluted glass diffuses in soft lines and partly hides the bulb. Cut carafe throws sharper glints, as found in our vintage glass. The black metal dome concentrates the beam and leans towards the workshop look, as in the black metal pendants. For a smokier look, there are also smoked vintage glass options.
Modern kitchen chandelier or vintage pendant: what does the number of light points change?
A single-point fixture concentrates light, a multi-lamp model spreads it along the whole length of a table or island. The modern kitchen chandelier plays on clean lines, the vintage pendant on materials and shapes.
Kitchen chandelier: three lamps or just one?
A single lamp suits a narrow worktop or a breakfast corner. Three lamps cover a table for six or a long island, with more even light and fewer harsh shadows between guests. Over a table, allow roughly one light point every 60 cm.
How to read a multi-point fixture: Percival, Opalinea, Jyla
Our Percival with its orange rings lines up three white shades on a bar, with one G9 socket per lamp. Opalinea and its opaline balls spread four points on a single support, in E14. Jyla, meanwhile, combines three golden cones, and the modern LED pendants offer variants with an integrated source.
Which socket and bulb for a kitchen pendant?
The collection uses E27, E14, G9 and GU10 sockets. The socket determines which bulb you can fit, the colour temperature the result: warm white for ambience, neutral or cool white for a whiter light above the worktop.
Warm white, neutral white or cool white above the worktop?
As a rule, a warm white around 2700 to 3500 K enhances the room and suits meals. A neutral white, around 3500 to 4500 K, stays comfortable for cooking. A cool white, beyond 4500 K, gives a more clinical look, useful for a precise task. A dimmable pendant lets you adjust the intensity through the day.
LED pendant or replaceable bulb: what is the difference?
A pendant with an integrated LED source needs no bulb. A model with an E27 or E14 socket takes a classic or LED bulb, which you change when it fades, with more latitude on colour temperature and power.
| Socket | Compatible bulb | Power listed on the models | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|
| E27 | Screw bulb, classic or LED | 40 W and 60 W | Main kitchen or dining room pendant |
| E14 | Small screw socket, classic or LED | 40 W and 10 W | Fixture with several small lamps |
| G9 | Pin bulb | 8 W | Small spaces, accent light |
| GU10 | Adjustable pin bulb | not specified | Adjustable fixture |
How do you install and care for a vintage pendant in a kitchen?
A pendant is mounted on the ceiling on an existing fixing point, with the cable cut to the desired length, after switching off the power. For care, dust the metal with a soft cloth and clean the glass with a non-abrasive product, without dismantling the fixture.
Can you install a ceiling pendant yourself?
Yes, on a fixing point already in place and properly anchored. Cut the power at the breaker, check that the support holds the load, identify live and neutral, then tighten the connectors inside the housing. If the ceiling is plasterboard or the point is missing, call an electrician.
How do you clean the glass and metal of a kitchen fixture?
Cooking steam leaves a greasy film on the shades. A slightly damp microfibre cloth is enough day to day, with a non-abrasive product for the glass. On brass and golden metal, avoid scouring pads that scratch the finish and simply wipe gently.
Our glass kitchen pendants are easy to clean for that reason. To finish choosing between material families, also compare the ceramic options and the full range of all lighting ranges available at Designix. Secure payment, tracked delivery and returns support you through to installation.
Frequently asked questions about vintage kitchen pendants
How do you choose a kitchen pendant?
First look at what it has to light: a worktop, an island or a table. A single lamp concentrates light, two to four points spread it. Then check the material, the diameter, the E27, E14 or G9 socket and the IP20 rating.
Which kitchen light for a worktop?
Choose a pendant hung low, whose shade or cone directs light onto the surface without glare. In the collection, domes, tubes and cylinders in glass or metal work well, with a warm white or neutral white bulb depending on the mood you want.
Which trendy kitchen ceiling light to choose when the ceiling is low?
Under a low ceiling, a short fixture is preferable, a ceiling light or a pendant hanging only slightly, so it does not block movement in the room. Pendants with adjustable cable can be shortened, which leaves more room than a rigid model.
What is an Italian design kitchen pendant?
It is a fixture with fine lines, often in ribbed or fluted glass, with a golden metal or brass frame and cylindrical or dome shades. The result is more graphic than rustic, while staying close to vintage codes.
How do you pair a vintage pendant with a modern kitchen decoration?
Keep the cabinets and worktops simple, then add one strong piece: a golden pendant, an opaline ball or a black dome. The contrast works best with a single dominant family of materials, metal or glass.
