For a straw pendant light, aim for a natural beige raffia shade of Ø 500 mm: it filters light into a warm halo, softens shadows and takes an E27 bulb. Count it as ambient lighting above a table or in a living room corner, and keep a second source for reading or cooking.
What kind of light does a straw pendant give?
A straw pendant light like the Raphina, in natural beige raffia, filters light and spreads it in a soft halo: less glare, softened shadows and a warm mood. The E27 socket lets you choose the bulb, and the material remains the real filter. Use it as ambient lighting, completed by another source for reading or working.
Woven straw pendant: what the material changes
The raffia weave creates a multitude of small openings. Light does not go straight up to the ceiling: it passes through the fibre, which gives a wider halo than an opaque shade and very soft shadow edges. The beige keeps a neutral light, neither yellow nor grey, and works with light woods or white walls. For more directed light, compare with a closed LED pendant: the result is crisper, less enveloping.
Which bulb to screw into an E27 socket?
The E27 socket is the most common: you choose the colour temperature. Around 2700 K, the light is very warm and suits the evening in a living room or bedroom; around 3000 to 3500 K, it stays warm but is easier to read by above a table. A classic or globe shaped LED bulb fits in the shade, as long as you check its size. The Raphina pendant in natural raffia combines these three points: beige raffia, E27 socket and LED technology, which gives off little heat near the fibre.
Where to install a straw pendant light at home?
The Raphina is listed for the living room, dining room, bedroom, kitchen and hallway: five living spaces where filtered light creates a warm mood. Above a table or a dining corner, it becomes the focal point; in a hallway, it guides without glare. In a damp room, it is not intended.
| Room | What the pendant brings | Point to check |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | Warm halo and natural material near the seating area | Hanging height and room volume |
| Dining room | Focal point above the table | Distance between the shade and the tabletop |
| Bedroom | Soft light for the evening | Adjustment so it does not glare from the bed |
| Kitchen | Mood above an island or a dining corner | Distance from water and steam (IP20) |
| Hallway | Welcoming light on arrival | Clearance height under the fixture |
Above a dining room table
This is its most obvious place: the wide shade marks the centre of the table and brings the light closer to the plates, without projecting it into the eyes. The Ø 500 mm calls for a table of a certain width to stay proportionate; above a small pedestal table, it would look huge. For other ideas, browse the dining room pendants.
In a hallway or corridor
In a corridor, the pendant acts as a landmark: place it along the axis of the passage and keep clearance above the heads of people walking through. The hallway gains a welcome light that is softer than a spotlight. Other sizes for these volumes are shown in corridor and hallway.
Kitchen pendant: how to install it above an island?
Above an island, a raffia pendant brings a warm material into an often mineral kitchen. As the Raphina is listed as IP20, it stays in dry rooms: keep it away from direct splashes and steam. It lights the mood, not the worktop: plan another source for cooking.
Original kitchen pendant: which material when the worktop is white?
On a white worktop or a mineral island, natural fibre brings what is missing: texture and light that does not bounce back. The beige of the raffia warms the white without turning it yellow. Other materials and sizes are gathered in kitchen pendant. For a room open to the living area, look instead at open kitchen.
What a pendant does not replace above the worktop
An ambient fixture does not light a work station: it does not replace direct lighting of the area where you chop and read. Place it far enough from the sink and the hob so it receives neither splashes nor steam, as fibre dislikes moisture. For the number of points above an island, spread them symmetrically according to the length of the worktop and the diameter chosen; a large size already takes up a lot of width.
XXL pendant and high ceiling: how to choose the size?
Under a high ceiling, a large size holds the space better: the Raphina is listed at Ø 500 mm and 400 mm high, a volume that stays readable from a distance. Then adjust the hanging height so the shade falls above the tabletop, without blocking the way or glaring at seated guests.
You have the volume in mind: open the Raphina beige raffia pendant to check its dimensions before ordering.
At what height should a pendant hang above the dining table?
There is no single measurement, but a common guide: usually allow between 60 and 80 cm between the bottom of the shade and the tabletop, depending on the room height and the size of the fixture. Check by sitting down: if the source appears directly in your field of vision, raise it a notch or choose a less powerful bulb.
How to make up for a very high ceiling?
Under a very high ceiling, hanging the pendant too low is not desirable: prefer a large size that fills the volume, or add a second light point above another area. What matters is that the fixture stays readable from the floor and that walking underneath is comfortable. Other large volumes are visible in the modern living room pendants, and more graphic lines in the designer pendant lights.
Original pendant light or Italian design: which style to choose?
Italian design plays on fine lines, metal or glass; a raffia pendant plays on material and filtered light. The Raphina is given as contemporary style, beige: it fits into a neutral interior or one with light wood. The choice comes down to the mood you want, not a hierarchy of styles.
| Material or finish | Light | Style | Where it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural raffia (Raphina) | Warm and filtered | Contemporary, natural | Living room, dining room, bedroom, kitchen, hallway |
| Metal | More direct, marked shadows | Industrial or modern | Kitchen, hallway, living room |
| Glass | Clear, lightly filtered | Design or retro | Dining room, bedroom, living room |
| Gold finish | Warm reflections | Dressed up and contemporary | Dining room, hallway, living room |
Designer bedroom pendant: which mood for which room?
In a bedroom, you want low, soft light for the evening: raffia works, as long as you adjust the height so it does not glare from the bed. For a bedroom, browse the bedroom pendants. For the living area, the living room pendants show other materials with a comparable volume.
Modern, boho or Italian pendant: the landmarks
Italian style relies on fine lines and smooth surfaces; boho on fibre, rope and irregular shapes. Contemporary, the one of this collection, comes down to a simple volume and a solid colour. None is better: choose according to what the room should evoke. For more graphic lines, open the designer pendants.
Can a straw pendant go in a bathroom or outside?
Not for this collection: the Raphina is listed as IP20, a rating that corresponds to dry rooms in the home. In a bathroom as outside, you need a fixture with a higher protection rating, often listed as IP44 or more. This pendant therefore stays in the living room, dining room, bedroom, kitchen or hallway.
The IP rating describes resistance to dust and water: the higher the number, the better the fixture withstands moisture. A bathroom is divided into zones, and the closer you get to the bathtub or shower, the stronger the required protection. It is the rating on the product sheet that decides, never the material. To equip a damp room, look in all the lighting fixtures in the home and filter on that criterion: some modern pendants are listed with higher protection, to be checked case by case.
How to hang and care for a raffia pendant?
Raffia is dusted dry, with a soft cloth or a vacuum cleaner on minimum power; avoid water and products. The fixing must follow the supplied instructions and the ceiling support. After assembly, check the height of the shade in relation to the tabletop and that it does not get in the way when walking past.
Dusting a pendant made of plant fibres
A dry microfibre cloth or a brush attachment is enough: dust settles on the weave without sinking in. Wipe without pressing, so as not to distort the fibre, and avoid sprays, alcohol and damp wipes, which mark raffia. An LED bulb gives off little heat, which limits drying out: this is the case for the references in our pendant range listed with LED technology.
Check the fixing and the height after assembly
Adjust the height before tightening for good: have someone sit at the table and see whether the source appears in their field of vision. Also check that walking under the shade stays comfortable, and that the fixing point holds the weight of the fixture according to the supplied instructions. A two-person check avoids handling the shade alone at height.
Frequently asked questions
What are the 6 families of lighting fixtures?
There are pendants, ceiling lights, wall lights, table lamps, floor lamps and recessed spotlights. A pendant is fixed to the ceiling and hangs from a cable or rod: this is the family of the Raphina, listed with an E27 socket and an IP20 protection rating.
What is the difference between a pendant light and a ceiling light?
A ceiling light is mounted flat against the ceiling and lights the room widely. A pendant hangs from a cable or rod, which brings the source closer to the table and concentrates the light. The collection presented here belongs to this second family, with an E27 socket and an IP20 rating.
How many pendants above a kitchen island?
It all depends on the length of the worktop and the diameter chosen: the usual practice is to spread the pendants symmetrically, with regular spacing. A large size such as Ø 500 mm already takes up a lot of width, which often means installing fewer of them.
Tree-shaped pendant light: how to choose it?
A tree-shaped fixture is a decorative model with radiating branches: check its diameter and height, as these shapes take up a lot of visual space. For a more understated room, a pendant in natural fibres such as raffia brings a strong presence with a simpler footprint.
What are the most beautiful designer pendants?
There is no single answer: a successful pendant is one whose material, size and light match the room. A large size in natural fibres such as raffia warms a living room or dining room, while metal or glass suit a more graphic mood better.
