Choose an LED ceiling light that sits flush against the ceiling: it lights the flight without dropping into the stairwell and does not intrude on the walkway. Allow for one point at the top of the stairs or on the landing, aimed toward the climb, and a second at the bottom of the flight if it is long.
Which light should you choose for an indoor staircase?
For an indoor staircase, an LED ceiling light fixes to the ceiling of the flight or the landing and does not intrude on the walkway. This selection brings together square stretched-fabric models from 80 to 140 cm, listed for the living room and bedrooms, and a 30 cm round in metal and glass, listed for the staircase and hallway.
Stairwell ceiling lights: the three measurements to take
Three measurements decide the model. The width of the stairwell opening and the landing first: that is what sets the size of the diffuser, not the ceiling height. The clearance above the steps next: a ceiling light 15 cm high fits anywhere, including under a slope. The position of the electrical supply last: if you are not redoing the wiring, it dictates where the light point goes. A square 140 cm across covers a wide landing, a 105 cm square suits a standard landing, and the 30 cm round makes do with a narrow or cluttered opening. Stairwell ceiling lights: square, round or rectangular?
The square and rectangle in stretched fabric read as a panel that sits flush with the ceiling: soft, even light, no visible bulb, white that blends into the paint. The round in metal and glass plays on the cage and drop, with a visible G9 bulb and a bolder outline. It is the only model in the selection listed for the staircase and hallway: Luoti 3P round LED ceiling light. In a narrow circulation area, LED ceiling lights for hallways apply the same low-profile logic.

What light do you need to illuminate a staircase?
The whole selection is LED. Most models give a warm white between 2700 and 3500 K, the tone that stays comfortable when you go up in the evening. The stretched-fabric models are rated at 8.5 W and the round G9 model at 12 W.
Warm white 2700-3500 K: what does it look like in a staircase?
Around 3000 K, a light gives a slightly amber tone, close to classic domestic lighting. It avoids the waiting-room effect that a cool white produces on pale walls, and tires the eye less in a passage where you do not stop. If the staircase connects to the living area, keeping the same colour temperature from one room to the next remains the simplest way to avoid a break. Ceiling lights for the living room follow the same tone.
8.5 W or 12 W: what wattage should you allow for?
In a wide staircase, several sources are better than one very powerful one: two 8.5 W points spread the light better than a single point. The 12 W round model with a G9 cap takes a dimmer, handy for lowering the intensity in the evening: the dimmable LED ceiling lights selection gathers this type of control. The colour temperature of the round model is not given by the supplier, it depends on the bulb you fit.
Ceiling light or wall light in a staircase?
A wall light illuminates the step from the wall and serves as a complement, while a ceiling light covers the whole flight from the ceiling without getting in the way. The models in this collection are all ceiling lights rated IP20, intended for a dry interior.
Fitting a wall light in an indoor staircase
The wall light fixes at hand height and illuminates a narrow flight where the ceiling offers no room, or complements the ceiling light when the staircase turns and the light from above comes in at an angle. It does, however, require running a supply into the wall, which is not always possible after the fact. The design models for circulation areas show comparable solutions in a ceiling version.
Cage wall light for a staircase: what does it look like?
A cage wall light leaves the bulb visible and projects direct light, with a graphic outline on the wall. The round model in this selection takes up that principle in a ceiling version, in metal and glass, which lets you match the two if you fit one in the hallway. See also the models for lighting a hallway, often treated with the same outline.
Chandelier or ceiling light for a staircase with a high ceiling?
Under a high ceiling, a ceiling light stays flush with the ceiling: it lights the flight without dropping into the stairwell and is easy to maintain. A pendant adds volume but hangs above the steps and requires headroom. Here, the largest format measures 140 cm across and 15 cm high.
Chandelier for a staircase: when to prefer it to a ceiling light
A chandelier is justified when the stairwell is wide enough that you do not brush past it and when the ceiling rises very high, because it brings the source closer to the eye. In a narrow staircase, it becomes a visual obstacle and a dust trap that is hard to reach. The choice therefore depends on the available volume, not on ceiling height alone: better to choose a light suited to each room than to follow a decorative reflex.
Large chandelier for a high ceiling: what to check
Check the headroom above the steps, the width of the stairwell opening and the reach of the ceiling fixing. A large stretched-fabric square 140 cm across lights a wide landing without dropping a centimetre below the ceiling. For large circulation volumes, modern hallway lighting gives other format references.
Where should the ceiling light go and how many light points?
The ceiling light goes at the top of the flight or on the landing, aimed toward the climb, to light the steps without casting shadow. A point at the bottom of the staircase avoids backlighting when you go down. The format follows the width: 30 cm in a narrow opening, up to 140 cm in a large volume.
Lighting for an indoor staircase: top of the flight or landing?
At the top of the flight, the light falls on the steps and disappears behind you as you go up, which makes the staircase readable without glare. On the landing, it also lights the doors it serves and acts as a night marker. In both cases, avoid placing the source on the exact axis of the climb if you want to limit reflections on a pale stair nosing.
Spots for a staircase: complement or alternative?
Recessed spots suit long flights or strings to be lit step by step, but they require cut-outs in the ceiling and multiply the points. A central ceiling light remains simpler to install and is enough in most homes. Bedroom ceiling lights or white ceiling lights show what this type of discreet diffuser looks like once fitted in a room.
Stairwell ceiling lights with a sensor or for outdoor use: what to allow for?
No model in this selection has a built-in sensor: switching is via the existing switch, and the round G9 model takes a dimmer. These ceiling lights are rated IP20, so they are reserved for dry indoor rooms; for an outdoor staircase, a higher protection rating is required.
Stairwell ceiling lights with a sensor: what does this selection offer?
A motion sensor is justified when the staircase is often used with your hands full, or for a cellar descent. It is fitted upstream, on a dedicated control, rather than built into the light. Here, only the round model takes a dimmer, which lets you adjust the evening light without changing the switch. See the adjustable-control solutions in dimmable LED ceiling lights.
Outdoor stairwell ceiling lights: why these models are not suitable
An IP20 rating protects against contact with fingers, not against damp or rain. An outdoor staircase, a porch or an unenclosed garage requires a higher protection rating, which this selection does not have. For a damp indoor room, compare with bathroom ceiling lights, whose rating is suited to steam.
How do you tie the staircase in with the living room, kitchen and toilet?
A staircase open to the living area reads together with the living room: keeping the same warm white colour temperature from one room to the next avoids a break. The white of the stretched fabric blends into the ceiling, the black of the round model stands out more. The kitchen and toilet are then treated according to their own style.
Chandelier for the living room or ceiling light: matching the landing
If the landing is visible from the sofa, the simplest is to stay with a flush ceiling light rather than a pendant, which would drop into your field of view. Modern ceiling lights for the living area cover this need, and the black models for the living room make more of a statement in a contemporary interior, like the 30 cm round in metal and glass.
Chandelier for the kitchen and light for the WC: treating neighbouring rooms
In the kitchen, the light should stay even above the worktop, which rules out overly focused sources: the kitchen chandelier and the modern kitchen decor give leads depending on the style of the units. In the toilet, the constraints are the small surface and maintenance: a compact, smooth light for the WC cleans quickly and stays discreet.
How do you care for an LED ceiling light and make it last?
A stretched-fabric ceiling light is dusted dry, with a soft duster or a vacuum on a low setting; any wet product is avoided. Metal and glass are cleaned with a soft cloth. The warranty covers 5 years on most of the selection, against 2 years on the rest.
How do you clean a stretched-fabric ceiling light?
Cut the power before you start, then run the duster over without pressing: stretched fabric marks if you rub it. For a stain, a dry approach is better than a liquid stain remover, which leaves a ring. Clean once or twice a year in a circulation area, more often if the staircase opens onto a kitchen.
Warranty and lifespan: what is covered
The four stretched-fabric models run on integrated LED: the source cannot be replaced, it is covered by the 5-year warranty. The round model runs on a G9 bulb, so it is replaceable, with a 2-year warranty. To widen your search, see see all Designix lights and the formats designed for work, such as office lighting.

Once you have noted the stairwell opening width and confirmed the ceiling height, you know whether your staircase calls for a 140 cm square, a 105 cm square, an 80 cm rectangle or the 30 cm round. The Anwen ceiling light covers large volumes, the Oisin ceiling light standard landings, the Luoti 3P narrow stairwells and hallways.
Frequently asked questions about stairwell ceiling lights
Which chandelier for the living room when the staircase is open to the living area?
A stretched-fabric ceiling light works better than a chandelier if the living area connects to the staircase: it lights without dropping into the circulation. The Tegan (105 x 130 cm) and Oisin (105 x 105 cm) models give a warm white, and the living room collection gathers the formats suited to the living area.
Large chandelier for a high ceiling: pendant or ceiling light?
Under a high ceiling, a pendant drops into the stairwell and requires headroom above the steps. A ceiling light stays flush with the ceiling, lights the flight and is easier to maintain. The largest format in this selection measures 140 cm across and 15 cm high.
Light for the WC: which one should you choose?
In the toilet, the constraints are the size of the room and maintenance. A white, compact LED ceiling light stays discreet and dusts quickly. Our dedicated collection gathers the models intended for these small rooms, to match with the paint and the rest of the home.
Do you need a stairwell ceiling light with a sensor?
A sensor is useful when the staircase is often used with your hands full. No model in this selection has one built in: switching is via the existing switch, and the G9 model takes a dimmer to adjust the evening light.
Cage wall light for a staircase: what does it look like?
A cage wall light leaves the bulb visible and projects direct light, with a graphic outline on the wall. The round model in this collection takes up that principle in a ceiling version, in metal and glass, with a G9 bulb and an optional dimmer.
