Smoked glass wall lights are chosen first for the light they give: grey, black or amber tinted glass softens the source and draws a shape on the wall that remains visible even when switched off. Allow one light point per wall light, placed at eye level in a hallway and at reading height beside a bed, on a black, gold or brass metal frame.
What is a smoked glass wall light and what light does it give?
It is a wall light whose light source is enclosed in smoked, grey, black or amber tinted glass, held by a metal frame. The glass filters and softens the source: the light stays soft and does not glare, and the glass keeps a crafted pattern whether on or off. The sockets are E27, G9 or integrated LED, rated IP20.
What smoked glass changes in a room
Smoked glass lowers raw brightness and slightly tints the light. Its surface matters as much as its colour: hammered, it diffuses through small facets and removes the reflections of a visible bulb, as on the grey Zenmilisto. A ball or globe produces a wider halo, while a tube stretches the light along the wall. It all starts with the full Designix lighting range, where the same tinted glass codes recur from one family to another.
What smoked glass does not do
It is not a spotlight: tinted glass absorbs part of the light, so a wall light illuminates a wall, a headboard or a step, not a whole room. All models in this family are rated IP20 and are not protected against water splashes. For a facade or a terrace, turn to black outdoor wall lights.
Glass ball wall light: for which room and at what height?
A glass ball goes in a hallway, a staircase, an entrance or on either side of a bed. Place it at eye level in a passage, and at reading height near a bed. Sphere-on-stem models, in smoked glass with a gold or black frame, take up little space.
Ball, globe or sphere on a stem
Three families coexist. The sphere on a short stem, like the gold Damora wall light, stands away from the wall and shines downwards. The globe, wider, suits when you want a visible light point. The ball on a backplate, like Lucerna, fixes flush to the wall and stays discreet. Round shapes and balls dominate the selection, with vintage-style glass wall lights for older patterns.
Height and spacing of a glass ball
In a hallway, set the ball at eye level, around 1.50 to 1.70 m from the floor, and repeat the same model every 2 to 3 metres. Near a bed, allow 1.10 to 1.30 m from the floor, a few centimetres above the mattress, to read without looking up. The projection stated on the product page, from 164 to 205 mm on most sphere models, tells you whether the wall light protrudes enough.
Which smoked glass wall light to choose for the living room?
For a living room, favour a large format that dresses the wall without cluttering it: a Ø 500 mm or Ø 320 mm disc in smoked glass, or a Ø 300 mm round. Tinted glass diffuses a soft accent light, ideal above a sofa, a bookcase or a reading corner.
Large disc or small round: which format for a living room
A Ø 500 mm disc, like the large Pyr wall light, becomes the focal point of the wall and suits a wide room. A Ø 320 mm or Ø 300 mm works in pairs on either side of a bookcase and stays discreet. A 79 cm tube, like the tubular Heor wall light, stretches the light along a shelf.
Accent light or main light
A smoked glass wall light is made for accent: it highlights a wall, accompanies a sofa, signals an entrance. To light the whole room, it complements a ceiling light, it does not replace it. Dimmable models let you adjust the intensity in the evening, and LED wall lights for living room gather the formats designed for this room.
| Model | Format and stated dimensions | Suitable rooms | Socket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyrielle | Round, Ø 300 mm | Hallway, staircase, bedroom, living room, entrance | LED |
| Glyn | Round with black centre, Ø 320 mm | Hallway, staircase, bedroom, living room | LED |
| Pyr | Round, Ø 500 mm | Living room | LED |
| Zenmilisto | Disc, Ø 280 mm | Hallway, staircase, bedroom, living room, entrance | LED |
| Rampion | Round, 20 x 20 x 10 cm | Hallway, staircase, bedroom, living room, entrance | LED |
| Damora | Sphere on stem, H 195 x L 166 mm | Bedroom | G9 |
How to choose a wall light for an adult bedroom?
In an adult bedroom, place a wall light on each side of the bed, instead of bedside lamps. Sphere models in smoked glass on a gold or black frame, with G9 or LED, take up little space and completely free the bedside table, with a low, warm light.
One wall light on each side of the bed
Two identical wall lights frame the headboard and free the bedside table. Kalmilessa and Alamilano measure H 156 mm, Orimilano and Damora H 195 mm: all fix above the bed base. A flat round like the round Cyrielle wall light suits when the wall is narrow. The rest of the choice is among models designed for the bedroom.
Soft light and evening reading
To read, direct the wall light downwards or towards the wall: indirect light is less tiring. A warm white temperature, around 2700 to 3500 K, stays comfortable in the evening; a cooler white, around 4500 to 6500 K, lights more neutrally but hardens the mood. Dimmable models, like dimmable wall lights, let you lower the intensity at bedtime.
High-end design wall lights: what sets the most refined models apart?
What you see first is the finish: brass, gold, iron, crystal or hammered glass, with a frame matching the glass. What reassures next: a two or three year warranty depending on the model, a dimmer on some, and dimensions precisely stated on the product page.
Finish and material: brass, gold, iron, crystal
Brass and gold warm a grey smoked glass, black iron makes it more graphic. Some models mix glass, iron and crystal, or pair two globes on one backplate like Duo Lumineux. These combinations are found in gold and black finishes, where the light frame carries the tinted glass.
What the product page must state
Before confirming, read four lines: dimensions and projection, socket, protection rating, wattage. A Ø 280 mm and a Ø 500 mm do not cover the same wall, and a 205 mm projection makes the wall light stick out in a narrow hallway. For a very understated interior, black metal wall lights offer the most discreet version of smoked glass.
How to light a staircase or hallway with wall lights?
In a staircase or hallway, repeat the same model at regular intervals rather than multiplying styles. A smoked glass disc from Ø 280 to 320 mm, or a small 20 cm round, guides the step without glare and stays discreet once placed high.
Repeat the same model along the climb
A flight is marked with a single repeated model, every two or three metres, at hand height. Glyn in Ø 320 mm, Zenmilisto in Ø 280 mm, Cyrielle in Ø 300 mm and the small round Rampion give regular light points. Changing shape mid-climb breaks the reading of the staircase. Design wall lights for staircase gather the formats that repeat best.
Avoid glare in a passage
A narrow passage needs only low wattage: 6 to 10 W is enough in integrated LED, and tinted glass already filters the source. Direct the wall light towards the wall or downwards, never in the line of sight. For small rooms, also see wall lights for toilets.
Antique art deco 1930s wall lights: how to recreate this style today?
The art deco spirit relies on geometric shapes and noble materials: amber glass ball or globe, brass or iron frame, gold and black combination. Several contemporary wall lights take up this design while accepting a modern E27 or G9 socket, chosen according to the desired mood.
Art deco codes: globe, brass and geometry
Three signs are enough: a glass globe or ball, a fine frame, straight lines or clean circles. Rampion pairs amber glass with a gold circle, the Éclat Mystique ball plays on tinted glass, Lucerna stays with the ball and brass. Brass and glass wall lights gather these combinations.
Pairing an old-style wall light with a current interior
Amber glass goes well with a white wall or a stone tone, and aged brass accepts light wood. The chosen bulb does the rest: a filament in E27 gives a warmer result than a bare LED. For a very contemporary interior, prefer the same design with a dark frame, in black design wall lights.
E27, G9 or integrated LED: which socket and colour temperature to choose?
The E27 socket accepts a standard bulb, which you choose yourself. The G9 suits small globes and compact spheres. Integrated LED imposes the stated temperature, warm white from 2700 to 3500 K or cool white from 4500 to 6500 K, with no bulb replacement to plan.
Interchangeable bulb or integrated LED
An interchangeable bulb lets you replace a burnt-out source without changing the wall light, and adapts the intensity or tint: this is the case with Sileta, Heor and Éclat Mystique, gathered in E27 wall lights. An integrated LED avoids the question of bulb choice and consumes little, but its colour is fixed at order.
Warm white or cool white depending on the room
Around 2700 to 3500 K, the light leans yellow and relaxes: bedroom, living room, reading corner. Between 4500 and 6500 K, it becomes whiter and suits a hallway, an office or an entrance that you want crisp. A single room does not need two temperatures: keep unity from one wall to another.
| Model | Socket | Light temperature | Stated wattage | Protection rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cyrielle | LED | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K | 10 W | IP20 |
| Zenmilisto | LED | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K | 8 W | IP20 |
| Rampion | LED | 3000 K | 6 W | IP20 |
| Damora | G9 | Not stated | 4 W | IP20 |
| Heor | E27 | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K | 40 W | IP20 |
| Sileta | E27 | Depending on the chosen bulb | Not stated | IP20 |
How to install and maintain a smoked glass wall light?
Cut the power, fix the bracket to a flush box or a solid wall, connect, then screw the glass after fitting the bulb. Cleaning is done with a soft cloth, slightly damp if needed: these models are rated IP20, so keep them away from water splashes.
Installing the wall light on a flush box
Switch off the circuit breaker, identify the wires, screw the backplate to the box or to a plug suited to the support, plasterboard or solid wall. Connect the earth if the model has one, then fit the bulb before the glass, easier to place without the fragile part. Tighten the glass moderately: it cracks under excessive pressure.
Cleaning and mistakes to avoid
A soft cloth is enough, without abrasive product or alcohol, which dull tinted glass. Do not exceed the wattage stated on the socket and do not place these models in a shower area, they are IP20. For damp use, compare LED wall lights for bathroom and check the stated rating.
The whole Designix selection benefits from secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and customer service. To decide between two formats, measure the installation height and the available projection, then browse the entire lighting catalogue.
Frequently asked questions about smoked glass wall lights
Can a smoked glass wall light be installed in a bathroom?
The models in this family are rated IP20: they resist solid objects but not water. They are therefore suitable around a sink or a mirror, outside the shower area and direct splashes. For a very damp room, check the rating stated on the product page before choosing.
What is a glass ball wall light?
It is a wall light whose source is enclosed in a tinted glass sphere, fixed to the wall by a discreet metal backplate. It lights without glare and remains decorative when off. Place it in a hallway, an entrance, a staircase or on either side of a bed.
How to light a staircase with wall lights?
Repeat the same model along the climb, at regular intervals, rather than mixing several shapes. A smoked glass disc from Ø 280 to 320 mm or a small 20 cm round lights the step without glare and stays discreet high up.
How to recognise an antique art deco 1930s wall light?
An art deco wall light plays on geometric shapes and noble materials: amber glass globe or ball, brass, iron or gold frame. Several contemporary models take up this design while accepting a modern E27 or G9 socket.
Can a glass wall light serve as a bedside shade?
Yes, by placing it above or beside the headboard, at reading height, with light directed downwards or towards the wall. A globe or smoked glass sphere wall light, with G9 or LED, then replaces the bedside lamp and frees the bedside table.
