A small ceiling light comes down to three things: the room it lights, its footprint on the ceiling and its socket. In this selection, the living room and bedroom top the list of recommended rooms, followed by the dining room, hallway and kitchen.

Which small ceiling light should you choose for each room?

A short, flush-mounted format suits a hallway or entryway, while a longer bar makes sense above a table.

Recommended format by room
Room Share of models concerned Format to favour Point to check
Living room 97% Short format or multi-point bar GU10 socket and ceiling height
Bedroom 97% Discreet square or round, softened light Light temperature stated on the product page
Dining room 93% Long bar above the table Table length and centre distance
Hallway 80% Flat model, low height Ceiling footprint in IP20
Kitchen 77% Spot or slim bar Water zone and cleaning

Living room ceiling light: what size above the sofa?

Ceiling height decides first. Below 2.50 m, a 10 cm square module such as the HATI grey ceiling light, a 10 cm square does not overwhelm the room. Above 25 m2, a wooden bar takes over: the KEKE 3 bar and the BERG 4 in natural wood, both with GU10 sockets. A large living room ceiling light has no place in a narrow room, where low-level supplementary lighting gives a more flexible result.

Kitchen ceiling light: how do you light the worktop?

A kitchen is handled in two stages: a general point in the centre, then directed lighting on the worktop. The TAVO 3 concrete ceiling light, 55 cm long with an E27 socket and 15 W, covers an entire room. For the work area, small supplementary spots make the difference. The kitchen comes fifth among recommended rooms, with 77% of models.

What are the different types of ceiling light?

A ceiling light is first defined by its format and socket. This selection brings together flat square or tube pieces, multi-point bars and small round modules. Sockets range from GU10, by far the most common, to G9 and E27, with a few integrated LED models.

Small flat ceiling light and small designer ceiling light: what changes on the ceiling.

A flat model blends in: the LEMMI 2 in steel is no more than 20 cm high for 26 cm long and stays close to the ceiling. A designer model, on the other hand, is visible and becomes the room's landmark. Square and tube shapes each account for about a third of models, with original creations a little under a quarter. So it all comes down to what you want to show: nothing, or a silhouette.

Small ceiling fan light: it is not the same device.

A ceiling fan light combines lighting and air circulation, with a motor and blades. No reference in this selection falls into that category: here, all models are lights alone, in IP20, to be mounted on a ceiling cable outlet. If you are primarily looking for a fan, compare its air-moving power before its light. For a decorative light, a small chandelier for an entryway plays a similar role in a taller volume.

Small LED ceiling light or GU10 socket: how do you choose?

All references in this collection use LED technology. The GU10 socket equips the vast majority of models, which means you can change the bulb without replacing the light. The wattages recorded are 10 W most often, then 12 W and 15 W on a few pieces.

Sockets and wattages recorded in the collection
Socket Share of models Wattage recorded What this implies
GU10 87% 10 W most often Replaceable bulb, light kept
Integrated LED 7% Not stated on the product page No bulb to change
G9 3% 12 W Small pin socket, found on one dimmable model
E27 3% 15 W Classic screw socket

Powerful LED ceiling light: when should you go to 12 or 15 W?

In a modest space, 10 W is enough, and that is the wattage of almost all models. A powerful LED ceiling light makes sense in a large room or for work use: the Zephyr Sky cube goes up to 12 W, and the TAVO 3 reaches 15 W with an E27 socket. The luminous flux, expressed in lumens, then depends on the bulb you install, not only on the stated wattage.

Small LED ceiling light and dimmer: what is possible.

Dimming requires a compatible light and a suitable bulb; it remains rare on this type of device. The OIO A 3P dimmable model states it clearly. On a standard GU10 model, the product page does not mention dimming: it is better to ask Designix customer service before ordering than to assume it.

Wood, metal or concrete: which small ceiling light for your style?

Wood dominates the collection, ahead of metal, concrete, aluminium and steel. The declared styles are modern, minimalist, industrial and Scandinavian. Natural wood softens the light and suits Scandinavian interiors, while metal and concrete lean towards industrial or minimalist.

Small rattan ceiling light or small wicker ceiling light: wood, a full alternative.

This selection contains neither rattan nor wicker, but solid wood fills the same role: diffusing warm light and breaking the harshness of a white ceiling. The KEKE 2 in oak, 30 cm long, fits in a small room, while a 120 cm bar is meant for a large table. Brown remains the most common shade, well ahead of white, grey and black.

Small black, white or gold ceiling light: which colour on the ceiling?

White blends into a pale ceiling and visually enlarges a small volume. Black structures the space and creates a clear contrast, useful in an industrial interior. Gold, found on the Zephyr Sky cube, plays a frankly decorative role. Beige and grey complete the palette, often on concrete or aluminium models.

Original small ceiling light: which shapes and what effect?

Shapes are divided between square, tube and original creations, with a few oval or ball pieces. A square or tube blends into the ceiling and lights without being noticed. An original shape, a gold cube or a planet, becomes the room's landmark.

Art Nouveau ceiling light or small designer ceiling light: two spirits not to be confused.

No Art Nouveau references here: the collection's vocabulary is modern, minimalist, industrial and Scandinavian. The design register therefore plays on lines and materials. The Zephyr Sky cube, in metal and aluminium, combines warm white and cool white. The LEMMI 3 bar plays the fine line in black or white over 46 cm.

Small children's ceiling light: which model for a bedroom?

In a child's bedroom, you look for soft light and a reassuring object at night. The Quartz children's ceiling light comes in 20, 30 or 40 cm, in white, grey or beige, with two light temperatures to choose from. For the evening, a matching bedside lamp completes the lighting without switching the ceiling light back on.

How do you install and maintain a small ceiling light?

All references in this collection are IP20, so they are intended for dry interior rooms: living room, bedroom, hallway, dining room or kitchen away from the water zone. The light is fixed to the ceiling on the existing cable outlet. For maintenance, a soft cloth is enough, with no abrasive product on the wood.

Small bathroom ceiling light: what IP20 allows or does not allow.

IP20 protects against touch and solid objects, not water splashes. An IP20 model therefore has no place above a bathtub or in the shower area, where a higher rating is generally targeted, around IP44 depending on the location. In a bathroom, keep these ceiling lights for the dry part, or turn to another type of light.

Small WC ceiling light: which compact format should you choose?

In a toilet, the constraint is the available height. A 10 cm square or a 6 cm module sits close to the ceiling without getting in the way. The HATI grey ceiling light, in aluminium, and the KEKE 10 oak, 6 cm square, are among the shortest formats in the selection, both with GU10 sockets.

Small 30 m2 apartment layout: how do you light without overloading?

In a small home, you light by zones rather than with a single central point: a short format in the hallway and entryway, a longer bar above the table, a discreet model in the bedroom and kitchen. Warm white suits rest, cool white suits work areas.

How many light points should you plan in a studio or one-bedroom flat?

Count one ceiling point per zone: entryway, living area, sleeping corner, kitchen. Over 30 m2, that usually means three to four fixed sources, plus mobile supplementary lights. A floor lamp lights the sofa without switching on the whole room. For the night, a small bedside lamp is enough. For working, setting up a desk corner in a small space requires directed light, which small desk lights cover better than a central ceiling light.

Narrow hallway and windowless entryway: the right ceiling format.

A narrow hallway copes poorly with a wide light: aim for a flat module or a short bar. The KEKE 2 in oak, 30 cm long and 5 cm high, passes over a passage without reducing headroom. A windowless entryway benefits from combining a ceiling source with supplementary flat spots directed towards a pale wall, which reflects the light.

How do you choose a small ceiling light without getting it wrong?

Three criteria decide: the socket, the ceiling footprint and the warranty, from 2 years on part of the selection to 5 years on the majority. Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service accompany the order.

2-year or 5-year warranty: what does it change?

The warranty covers the light, not the bulb when it is replaceable. Most models in this selection are guaranteed for 5 years, a minority for 2 years. On a GU10 ceiling light, wear mainly affects the power supply and the holder: a long duration therefore has real value on a light you keep for several years.

Small dimmable ceiling light: how do you spot it?

The mention appears on the product page, and it remains rare here. The OIO A 3P is the model to remember if you want to lower the light in the evening in a living room or bedroom, with a G9 socket and 12 W. Without that mention, consider that dimming depends on the bulb and ask the question before buying.

Unsure about the size or socket? Designix customer service answers before ordering, and delivery is tracked. Browse our selection of lights to find these formats. You can also compare these models with the full Designix lighting catalogue.

Frequently asked questions

Which ceiling light for a small entryway?

A compact, flush-mounted model works best: a 10 cm square cube like the HATI grey, or a short oak bar like the KEKE 2, which does not encroach on the passage. The GU10 socket lets you change the bulb without removing the light.

Can a small ceiling light be installed in a bathroom?

The models in this collection are IP20, a rating intended for dry interior rooms. In a bathroom, IP20 does not cover water splashes: it is better to keep these ceiling lights for the hallway, bedroom or a WC without a shower.

Is a small LED ceiling light enough to light a living room?

For a living room, the most common wattage here is 10 W, with a few models at 12 or 15 W. In a modest room, a compact ceiling light supplemented by a floor lamp or a supplementary lamp gives more flexible lighting than a single point.

Small WC ceiling light: which model should you choose?

In a toilet, a short, flat format avoids reducing the available height. The HATI grey, a 10 cm square, or the KEKE 10 in oak, 6 cm square, sit close to the ceiling. IP20 is suitable for a WC without a shower.

Small black or white ceiling light: what should you choose on the ceiling?

Black creates a clear contrast and structures a modern or industrial interior. White blends into a pale ceiling and visually enlarges a small volume. Here, brown dominates, with white, grey and black depending on the model.
