First choose the protection rating and the length, then only the style: that is what decides whether the garland will hold up outside and whether it will cover the support. A rechargeable fairy lights string runs on a built-in battery recharged by USB cable, with no socket nearby and no extension lead to run through a window, and it moves from a railing to a pergola without tools.
What is a rechargeable LED garland and how does it work?
A rechargeable LED garland runs on a built-in battery, recharged by USB cable, with no socket nearby and no extension lead to run from the house. It lights with low consumption and hangs wherever you want, from the balcony to the low wall, with battery life varying by model and lighting mode.
Rechargeable USB LED garland: how it works
The battery sits in a box placed on the cable or in the first bulb. You charge this box from a USB socket, then the garland runs on its own for the evening. The benefit is immediate on a city terrace or a balcony with no outdoor socket: no cable crosses the living room, nothing to wire to the panel, and the garland follows whichever support you choose, railing, low wall, arch or branch. Other outdoor lighting solutions need a fixed power supply: find them in our 220V mains versions if you prefer a permanent installation.
Rechargeable LED garland or solar garland: what is the difference
On battery, you decide when it switches on, by switch or remote control. On a solar garland, a small panel recharges the battery during the day and the cell triggers switch-on at dusk: handy on a very sunny balcony, less reliable under an awning. Both families sit side by side in our selection of string lights, with materials and formats that mainly change the decorative effect. The Lumivine garland with transparent cable illustrates the genre well: ten metres of discreet cable, amber LEDs, a finish that fades away in favour of the light.
Where to install a rechargeable LED garland: terrace, balcony, garden?
The dominant uses of the collection are outdoor and terrace: the garland hangs on a pergola, a railing, a low wall or along a hedge. For outdoors, check the protection rating, IP44 covering most models and IP65 the most exposed pieces.
Rechargeable outdoor string light: choosing the right protection rating
The IP rating describes resistance to water and dust. IP44, very common here, covers water splashes: light rain, evening watering, light spray on a balcony. IP65 adds protection against stronger jets, for a very exposed section of wall. An IP20 model, by contrast, stays reserved for dry, sheltered rooms. The Tubolux LED tube is rated IP65, which makes it the logical choice for a wall corner battered by rain, where our splash-resistant garlands are enough on a covered terrace.
Terrace, balcony, pergola: where to hang it to structure the space
On a pergola, the garland draws parallel lines above the table and acts as a light ceiling. On a railing, it highlights the edge of the balcony and lights the floor without glare. Along a hedge or a low wall, it accompanies a path. For a very exposed outdoor area, compare our garlands for very exposed outdoor areas and keep the more fragile ones for shelter.
| Use | Format in the collection | Length found | Protection rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small balcony, railing | Short linear garland | 266 to 330 cm | IP44 |
| Low wall, small hedge | Garland with retro bulbs | 450 cm | IP44 |
| Pergola, arbour | Garland with bells or lanterns | 500 to 800 cm | IP44 |
| Facade, large garden | Transparent cable or round beads | 1000 cm | IP44 |
| Window, terrace wall | Light curtain | 300 x 200 cm | IP44 |
| Clean line in a corner | Rigid tube garland | 700 x 3 cm | IP65 |
Which length of rechargeable LED garland to choose?
The formats in the collection range from about 2.6 m to 10 m, with curtain variants of 300 x 200 cm and a light web one metre in diameter. Measure the distance to cover before choosing: a linear garland links two points, a curtain dresses a whole surface.
Short or long garland: which format for a small balcony
Measure the railing or the beam, add the length of the drops you want if you plan loops, and take the size immediately above. On a three-metre balcony, a 266 to 330 cm format stretches without excess; on a four to five metre pergola, aim for 800 cm so you can undulate. The Umberta with its braided jute covers eight metres with a warm white finish, a good size for an arbour.
Light curtain or linear garland: two ways to dress a wall
The linear garland follows a line, that of a beam or a handrail. The curtain covers a surface: its strands fall vertically and dress a bare wall, a terrace window or the back of an arbour. The Federigo light curtain covers 300 x 200 cm and fixes to the top of a support. To see every format, browse the LED garlands and their short, long and low-voltage variations such as the 24V low-voltage garlands.
Which style and material for a rechargeable garland?
Wood, jute and rope give the bohemian, natural spirit, plastic and glass play the retro or transparent card, bamboo and metal dress lanterns and bells. The bohemian style dominates the collection, alongside vintage, retro, modern and more original pieces.
Wood, jute and rope: the bohemian style
Light wood and braided jute let the cable and the ties show: the garland becomes an object, not just a light source. On a wooden terrace or a stone wall, this finish blends with the furniture without competing with it, and the bells or lanterns add relief during the day. The Rotinara garland in braided rattan and the Macrama macrame garland are two expressions of it, one more graphic, the other softer.
Crackled glass, amber plastic: when the light makes the decor
Crackled glass diffuses a grey, muted light, very readable on a pale facade. Amber plastic recalls old bulbs and warms a pergola without lighting strongly. The retro bulbs of the Coco garland sit on E27 bases, so they are replaceable if one fails, a real durability argument.
| Material | Dominant style | Colour | Light finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Bohemian | Brown | Warm white 2700-3500 K |
| Jute and rope | Bohemian | Beige, cream | Warm white 2700-3500 K |
| Crackled glass | Decorative | Grey | LED |
| Plastic | Retro | Amber | Retro E27 bulbs |
| Bamboo and metal | Natural | Beige | LED |
| Opaque white | Modern | White | White |
What light does a rechargeable LED garland give: warm white or amber?
The most common light temperature in the collection is warm white, between 2700 and 3500 K, which lights a terrace or a table without harshness. Other models lean towards amber, transparent or colour, for a more decorative than functional finish.
Warm white 2700-3500 K: why this finish suits outdoors
Below 3000 K, the light leans towards orange-yellow and stays gentle on the eye as night falls. It is the finish you expect from dinner outside: enough to read a menu, not enough to flatten faces. The Luca garland and its natural wood shades plays exactly this card, in a short 330 cm format that suits a small table.
Amber, yellow, red or purple: the coloured models
A coloured garland is chosen for a party or festive decor, not to light a path. Some models are controllable and change shade to suit the mood. The Arachnée web controlled by remote stretches over one metre in diameter and stores easily after the event. To compare every finish, see all our light fixtures.
Which LED garland switches on by itself?
A solar garland switches on by itself at nightfall, its cell detecting the drop in light, and several models in the collection work this way. Rechargeable battery garlands are controlled by the switch or by remote control depending on the model chosen.
Solar LED garland: automatic switch-on at dusk
The solar panel recharges the battery during the day, then switch-on happens with no intervention as soon as brightness drops. It is convenient for a hedge or a low wall you do not want to go and switch on. Output depends on exposure: a panel in the shade of a wall will recharge less than in full sun. Find these models among the solar models that switch on by themselves, including the Beltoressa and its round beads.
Remote-control model: controlling switch-on from a distance
A remote-control garland switches off from the table without getting up, and some models offer several colours or intensities. It is the right choice when the garland hangs high, on a pergola or a branch, out of reach. Check that the remote is supplied with the model, and keep the switch on the box accessible for recharging.
How to hang and care for a rechargeable LED garland?
Unroll the garland before hanging it, fix it on hooks or ties suited to the support, then keep the battery accessible for USB recharging. At the end of the season, store it away from moisture to preserve the cable and the LEDs from one year to the next.
Fixing without drilling: hooks, ties and tensioners
On a metal railing, nylon ties are enough. On a painted wall or wood, adhesive hooks hold a light garland. On a pergola, run a cable between two posts and hang the garland on it: the line stays straight and the load is spread. Place a fixing point every 50 cm or so over a long length, and leave a little slack to avoid stretching the cable. Short formats also sit on a simple support: see the Odo garland and its transparent stars for a balcony, or the selection of string lights for the rest of the ties and finishes.
Recharging and storing: the right care habits
Recharge before the battery fully drains, and let the box breathe during charging, indoors. If heavy rain is forecast for several days, take down an IP44 garland or shelter its box. At the end of the season, coil the cable without folding it back on itself, in a dry box: that is what prevents the bare wire that, in turn, presents a real risk.

Frequently asked questions
Can an LED garland catch fire?
An LED garland runs on low consumption and heats very little, which limits the risk compared with other light sources. The danger comes mainly from a damaged cable or a damaged battery: store the garland away from moisture, do not fold it over the cable and replace it if the insulation is cut.
Can a rechargeable LED garland be left outside in the rain?
It all depends on the protection rating shown on the product page: IP44, the most common in the collection, corresponds to water splashes such as light rain, while an IP65 model withstands stronger exposure. An IP20 garland, by contrast, stays reserved for sheltered rooms.
Rechargeable USB LED garland: is it enough for outdoors?
Yes, provided you choose a model rated IP44 or IP65 for outdoors. USB charging only serves to recharge the battery: it does not replace the protection rating, which remains the criterion to check before hanging the garland outside.
How do you fix a rechargeable string light without drilling?
Use adhesive hooks or ties suited to the support, wood, metal or painted wall, and spread the fixing points before stretching the garland. Keep the battery in an accessible area for recharging, without leaving it in a hollow where water collects.
Which length to choose for a terrace or a balcony?
Measure the length of the support to dress, from the railing to the pergola beam, then add the drops if you want loops. The collection runs from about 2.6 m to 10 m in linear format, with a 300 x 200 cm curtain to cover a surface.
