A recessed reading light is a low-power LED wall light, fixed close to the wall, that illuminates a specific area: a book, a step, a hallway. This selection brings together wall lights in aluminium or metal, in warm white 2700 to 3500K, rated IP20, for the bedroom, hallway, staircase and entrance.

What is a recessed reading light and what is it for?

In practice, it replaces the bedside lamp sitting on the nightstand and frees up the surface: the light falls directly onto the book without lighting up the room. On the spec sheet, the selection comes down to a few lines: 3 W LED, LED base, warm white 2700 to 3500K, IP20, aluminium or metal.

Recessed reading lights with a switch: how is the light controlled?

The reading light is wired to the existing lighting point circuit and is switched on from the wall switch, like any fixed wall light. No separate control is needed: the existing circuit handles the switching. In a hallway or on a staircase, this avoids searching for a second switch in the dark. If you prefer a movable lamp, compare with bedside reading lights.

Wall reading light or digital reading light: why the same word?

The word also refers to the e-reader. Lighting terminology has adopted it for the reading wall light, the one that illuminates the open book. There is no technical connection between the two objects: here, we are talking only about LED wall lights. To see the full family, browse all our lighting.

How do you install recessed ceiling spotlights?

Cut the power at the breaker, locate the conduit runs, drill at the recess diameter, connect the light and then clip it into place. For a wall reading light, the method is the same, but the recess is made in the wall, directly below the existing lighting point.

Recessed reading lights: drilling into the wall without damaging the circuit

First locate the conduit with a detector before drilling, then use a drill bit suited to the wall material. The Scava recessed spotlight in matte black measures 190 mm high by 80 mm wide: check this footprint before marking out, especially near woodwork. For a model with a freer design, see reading lights with a crafted design.

Do you need an electrician to install a wall reading light?

Without an electrical point where you want it, installation means chasing a channel and connecting to the consumer unit: that is a job for an electrician. If the circuit already exists and the breaker stays accessible, fixing and wiring are within reach of a well-equipped DIYer.

Where to place a recessed reading light: headboard, hallway, staircase or entrance?

At the headboard, it replaces the bedside lamp and frees up the nightstand. In a hallway or on a staircase, it marks the way without lighting the whole room. In an entrance, it highlights a wall or lights up the handle. All these dry rooms are among the uses covered by the selection.

Recessed headboard reading lights: at what height should they be fixed?

Generally, they are aligned with the top of the mattress, around 60 to 70 cm above the base depending on the bed thickness, so the beam falls on the book and not in your eyes. The Hester reading light with flexible arm extends its head 340 mm above the pillow: that is what sets it apart from a flat wall light.

Recessed reading lights on a staircase: which side should they go?

Place it on the handrail side, to light the step without casting a shadow in the walkway. An adjustable spotlight such as the Valdanica wall light with adjustable spotlight is set downwards before tightening. In a bedroom, a wall-mounted bedside reading light serves the same purpose.

Which reading light for which room
Room What the light needs to do Model to favour Point to check
Bedroom, headboard Read without lighting the room Hester and its 340 mm arm Clearance above the nightstand
Hallway Mark the way Scava in matte black 190 mm height once installed
Staircase Light the step Valdanica, adjustable spotlight Beam directed downwards
Entrance Highlight a wall, light a handle Auriella in brushed gold Socket nearby for USB
Toilet Discreet extra light Any, IP20 is sufficient No direct water spray
Bathroom Wet-area lighting No model in this selection Suitable protection rating required

Black, gold or white recessed reading lights: which colour to choose?

Most models are black, one finish is brushed gold. Black blends into a dark wall and stands out on a light wall; gold warms up a white wall or plain wallpaper. This selection has no white version, which you will find among our light finishes.

Black recessed reading lights: on which wall do they stand out?

On a light wall, matte black draws a crisp line and becomes a decorative feature; on a dark wall, it disappears and only the light remains. The choice therefore depends on what you want to show. Find these shades in our matte black range.

White recessed reading lights: which collection should you look at?

For a light finish, turn to light finishes, which group the brighter versions in the catalogue. If the wall is already dark and you want a warm contrast rather than a stark one, look at gold models and bronze finishes.

Which light for reading in the evening: 3 W, warm white and integrated LED?

All models in the selection run on 3 W LED and give off a warm white of 2700 to 3500K, the range that leans towards evening ambience rather than office light. The power stays modest: this is extra light for reading or marking a passage, not general lighting.

Warm white 2700-3500K: what does that change for reading?

At 2700K, the light leans towards the amber of an incandescent bulb; at 3500K, it becomes more neutral, without turning to the blue of daylight. This range stays comfortable in the evening and is easy on the eyes on paper. To light a whole living room, you need another format: see freestanding LED lighting.

Is 3 W enough to read in bed?

Yes for a book, provided the beam is brought close to the page. No for lighting a room: 3 W is close-range extra light, not a ceiling light. If you are looking to light a larger seating area, compare with freestanding models.

Can a recessed reading light be installed in a bathroom?

No: the entire selection is rated IP20, meaning protection against dust and contact, not against water. In a bathroom, you need a light whose protection rating suits wet areas. Bedroom, living room, hallway, staircase, entrance and toilet are however perfectly suitable.

IP20: what this rating really protects against

The first digit covers solids, the second liquids. With IP20, the wall light is protected against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm and against finger contact, but no protection is claimed against water. A spray or prolonged condensation is therefore not covered.

Toilet, hallway, staircase: where IP20 is enough

All four models are rated IP20, for use in dry rooms. The constraint to remember is simple: no direct water spray on the light. For a warmer atmosphere in these rooms, see the wooden versions.

How do you direct a wall reading light to read without being dazzled?

Most models are adjustable: cylindrical spotlight, 340 mm flexible arm or adjustable spot. The beam is aimed at the book, never at the eyes, and tilted downwards so as not to dazzle the person sharing the bed. The Auriella tube, with its fixed shape, has a USB port.

Flexible arm or adjustable spotlight: what is the difference day to day?

The flexible arm bends in every direction and brings the head closer to the page; the adjustable spotlight pivots on a ball joint and locks on one axis. The first suits intensive reading, the second step or hallway lighting. Also compare wall lights with a crafted design.

Two people in the bed: the setting that avoids dazzling the other

Set the tilt before fully tightening the base plate, then test it lying down in the position of the person reading. The beam should skim the page and stay below the neighbour's eye line. The Auriella tube in brushed gold shines downwards, with no adjustment needed.

The reading lights in the selection
Model Material Colour Shape Dimensions Adjustment Warranty
Valdanica Aluminium Black Tube, cylindrical spotlight H 86 x W 86 mm, length 41 mm Adjustable spotlight 3 years
Hester Metal Black Flexible arm H 120 x W 40 mm, length 340 mm Adjustable flexible arm 3 years
Scava Metal Matte black Square, spotlight H 190 x W 80 mm Adjustable spotlight 3 years
Auriella Aluminium Brushed gold Tube H 183 x W 78 mm, length 125 mm Fixed, USB port 3 years

How do you care for a recessed reading light and make it last?

A dry cloth is enough: dust builds up on top of the spotlight or tube and dulls the beam. Avoid liquid products on the LED source. Check once a year that the base plate is still tight against the wall, and keep the invoice: the selection is covered by a 3-year warranty.

Cleaning an LED wall light without damaging the source

Cut the power, dust dry, then wipe a slightly damp cloth over the aluminium or metal, never on the LED itself. Matte finishes mark easily: an abrasive product leaves a permanent trace. For other shades, see black finishes.

3-year warranty: what it changes when buying

The warranty covers the entire selection for 3 years, which gives time to check that the wall fixing holds and the beam stays stable. Keep the purchase invoice: it is the document requested in the event of a claim.

The 340 mm arm of Hester and the 190 x 80 mm footprint of Scava are two useful reference points when choosing. Unsure between two models? The 340 mm arm of the Hester reading light with flexible arm often tips the balance towards the bedroom, while the Scava recessed spotlight in matte black is the natural choice for a hallway. Frequently asked questions

How do you install recessed ceiling spotlights?

Cut the power at the breaker, locate the conduit runs, drill at the recess diameter, connect the light and then clip it into place. For a wall reading light, the method is the same but the recess is made in the wall, directly below the existing lighting point. Without an electrical point in place, call an electrician.

What is a reading light?

In lighting terminology, a reading light is a low-power wall light that illuminates a specific area: a book, a step, a hallway. The word also refers to a digital reading tablet, unrelated to this selection, which consists only of LED wall lights.

What is the ideal tool for reading at night?

An adjustable wall light in warm white, such as the spotlight or flexible-arm models in this selection: the beam is set on the book without lighting the whole bedroom. At 3 W LED, the light stays contained and does not wake the person sharing the bed.

Which light for a bathroom ceiling?

A light whose protection rating suits wet areas, which is not the case for the IP20 models shown here, intended for dry rooms. Bedroom, living room, hallway, staircase, entrance and toilet are suitable for this selection, but not a bathroom.

What are the drawbacks of a wall reading light?

It requires a lighting point where you want it, otherwise chasing work is needed. Its light is localised: it does not replace the room's general lighting. Finally, the IP20 rating of this selection rules out the bathroom. Three constraints to check before drilling.
