Start with a diameter, from 19.5 to 55.5 cm depending on the room, and an E27 socket: that is what decides the porcelain pendant light you will hang. The matte white of the porcelain gives a soft light, without harsh glare, that works as well above a worktop as above a dining table.

What are the different types of pendant light?

A pendant light comes in three families: the single porcelain point (globe, ball, drop), the composition with several diffusers, and the long-cable pendant that hangs low. The pieces gathered here belong to the pendant lights with an E27 socket and IP20 rating, so for dry interiors.

The white porcelain pendant light, a safe choice

The enamelled matte white reflects light without harsh glare and does not tint the colours around it. It is the tone that ages best above a worktop where you chop, and the one that matches a pale wall most easily. See the white porcelain models, to compare with the ball pendants in the same spirit.

The biscuit porcelain pendant light

Biscuit means porcelain fired without enamel: a grainy, matte finish that catches the light instead of reflecting it. The diffusers in this selection are enamelled, so smoother and easier to wipe. Biscuit is reserved for rooms where the light stays decorative and rarely touched.

The antique porcelain pendant light

An antique-style piece is recognised by its uneven enamel, a painted decoration and a dense material, heavier than current production. To recapture that register without pastiche, a braided cable and a white socket are enough: that is the case with the Jacinth and its braided cable.

Which original pendant light for a kitchen?

Above a worktop, a porcelain pendant light brings a clean white that does not yellow the light. On a narrow worktop, a single globe of Ø 200 mm is enough; above an island, a composition of three balls or four drops spreads the light. The E27 socket lets you change the bulb to suit the use.

An original kitchen pendant light through its line

Breaking away from the plain white square often comes down to very little: a fluted body, a brass ring, an exposed socket. The fluted Gosse with brass rings measures Ø 19.5 cm, a size that fits above a narrow worktop without blocking the view. The rest of the kitchen range plays the same silhouette card.

The Italian design reading

Rounded lines, a visible socket and the repetition of the same model above the worktop make up what reads as Italian design. Hanging two or three identical pieces at regular intervals produces that effect, with no added ornament. The Porcela globe of Ø 200 mm lends itself to this, as do the sets in the modern kitchen range.

Which pendant light for a modern living room?

In a living room, the porcelain pendant light is used as the main light in the centre, or as a composition above a table. Large formats, up to Ø 55.5 cm for four drops, fill the volume without weighing it down. Matte white matches pale walls as well as dark woods, without aggressive contrast.

A composition for the modern living room

A large set above a coffee table or a dining table structures the room: the Bina Blanche and its three balls form Ø 40 cm by 70 cm high, enough to fill the void. The composition reads as a single object. Compare with the other modern living room pendants.

The main light in the centre

To light the whole room, a single point of Ø 19.5 to 20 cm is enough in a living room of average size. Above a dining table, go for the composition instead, lowered to tabletop height. The living room range pairs well with the dining room models.

Which designer pendant light for a bedroom and how to match it?

In a bedroom, a small-diameter porcelain pendant light is better, placed above the bedside tables or the reading corner, for a light that does not fall into your eyes. Rounded shapes and matte white remain the easiest to match with coloured textiles. Some models also suit the hallway and corridor.

The round shape for the bedroom

Roundness avoids hard angles above the bed. The Gosse, Ø 19.5 cm by 50 cm high, adjusts to the desired height and works just as well in a corridor. Other bedroom models play the small format card.

Matching the colour to the textile

A coloured textile supports white, green or multicolour. The green Porcela with opaline globe holds that role without dominating the room. Match the cable colour to the bedding rather than the wall, and look at the modern bedroom pendants if you are after another silhouette.

Porcelain pendant light: which room, which format
Room What matters Suitable format Colour and style
Kitchen Clean white over the worktop, no glare Globe Ø 200 mm or fluted Ø 19.5 cm, one point per zone Matte white, contemporary
Dining room Light lowered above the tabletop Three balls Ø 40 cm or four drops Ø 55.5 cm White, contemporary
Living room Fill the volume without weighing it down Set of three balls or four drops White or green
Bedroom Light out of the line of sight Small diameter, Ø 19.5 to 20 cm White or multicolour
Hallway and corridor Bring the light down to useful height Adjustable cable up to 160 cm Braided cable, white socket

XXL pendant light under a high ceiling: which format and at what height?

Under a high ceiling or in a stairwell, the pendant must hang low enough for the light to reach working height: an adjustable cable up to 160 cm allows this. A large diameter, up to Ø 55.5 cm, fills the void. Conversely, a low room calls for a small format of Ø 19.5 to 20 cm.

The small porcelain pendant light

When the room is low or narrow, the small diameter avoids a bulky effect: Ø 19.5 to 20 cm, like the Gosse or the Porcela. These formats are among the most affordable models in the selection.

The portable porcelain pendant light

A portable pendant stands out by its long cable and its offset hook: you fix it to the wall or a beam and let it hang above a reading corner. The Jacinth gives 160 cm of braided cable for an 11 cm footprint at the mount. See the designer pendants for other cable shapes.

The light drop in a staircase

In a tall stairwell, cable length matters more than diameter: a large diffuser of Ø 55.5 cm like the Cinzia fills the volume, set low enough to light the steps without glaring from the landing.

Can a porcelain pendant light be installed in a bathroom?

No: the porcelain pendant lights in this selection are all IP20, a rating intended for dry interiors, without water splashes. In a bathroom, a higher protection rating is required, such as IP44. These models are therefore reserved for the kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom, hallway and corridor.

What IP20 means on a pendant light

IP20 protects against solid bodies larger than 12.5 mm, and nothing else: no water tightness. Shower steam or a sink splash are outside its use. It is the rating of every piece in the collection, without exception.

Which bathroom pendant light to turn to

In a damp room, look for an IP44 rating or higher. Look at our full range of lights rather than porcelain. A ceiling light or a sealed wall light will be better placed there than a hanging pendant. The modern pendants remain for dry rooms.

How to install and care for a porcelain pendant light?

Switch off the power at the breaker, fix the mount into a solid material, connect the wires to the terminal block and then screw in an E27 bulb of 40 W maximum. For care, a soft cloth is enough: porcelain does not tolerate abrasive products. The cable is adjusted before final fixing, never while live.

How to adjust the cable height

Adjust the length before screwing the mount to the ceiling. Above a table, allow generally 60 to 70 cm between the bottom of the diffuser and the tabletop, a common reference that avoids glaring seated guests. The pendants in the selection are adjusted at the time of installation.

How to clean enamelled porcelain

A slightly damp microfibre cloth is enough on the enamel; avoid alcohol and scouring powders that dull it. The warranty is two years on most of the selection and three years on some models. Also see the pendant lights as a whole.

What are the drawbacks of porcelain?

Porcelain is vulnerable to knocks: a diffuser that is hit or dropped can chip. It is also denser than a textile shade, so heavier, which requires a solid ceiling fixing. Finally, the IP20 rating limits it to dry rooms and the E27 socket requires a bulb compatible in diameter.

A porcelain that is vulnerable to knocks

A globe of Ø 200 mm hung low in a corridor remains exposed to bags and brooms. Above a table or an island, the risk is lower. If the room is a passageway, a small format hung higher limits breakage without changing the look.

A weight that requires a suitable fixing

At equal volume, porcelain weighs more than a textile: the fixing must bite into a solid material, concrete or joist, with a plug suited to the support. On a hollow ceiling, reinforcement is necessary. Nothing insurmountable, but it is prepared before installation. The LED-equipped versions save you coming back to change a bulb.

Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: your order is followed from basket to installation. Before confirming, measure your tabletop and your ceiling height. For a long table, the designer pendant in a composition of four drops gives the widest footprint; for a low room, go for a single point.

Open the Designix lighting catalogue to compare the families, or go straight to the Bina Blanche page if your table is longer than 1.60 m.

What is an original pendant light?

It is a pendant that breaks away from the standard white square through its shape or detail: a fluted porcelain with brass rings, an opaline globe, a set of three balls or four drops. The originality lies in the silhouette and the exposed socket, not in a decoration added afterwards.

How to choose a vintage porcelain pendant light?

You look at the shape of the diffuser (globe, ball, drop), the whiteness of the porcelain and the nature of the cable. A braided cable and a white socket give an older reading than a smooth black cable. A fluted model with brass rings plays the same card, without pastiche.

Where to find a small porcelain pendant light?

The small formats in the selection are around Ø 19.5 to 20 cm: the fluted Gosse and the Porcela globe. These dimensions suit a bedroom, a corridor, a hallway or a narrow worktop, with a standard E27 socket and a bulb of 40 W maximum.

How many light points above a table?

It all depends on the length of the tabletop: a single point for a small table, a composition of three balls or four drops for a long table. These sets measure Ø 40 cm and Ø 55.5 cm respectively, which gives the real footprint above the tabletop before drilling.

Which socket and which bulb for a porcelain pendant light?

All the pieces in the collection have an E27 socket, with a power indicated up to 40 W maximum on most models. The choice of bulb remains free within that limit: warm white around 2700 K for a bedroom, neutral white around 4000 K for a kitchen where you chop.
