Start with the shape and the clearance height: a wide ring for a large living room, a low oval above a table, a tube or a track of adjustable spotlights above a worktop. All models attach to the ceiling with a canopy and hang a luminous volume, in steel, metal, aluminium or glass, with an E27, E14, GU10 socket or an integrated LED.
What are the different types of pendant ceiling lights?
Four families emerge: the ring or wire frame with a central bulb, the tube or track of spotlights, the ring with opal globes, and the model with crystal drops. Shapes range from round to oval, from tube to square and ball. Steel dominates, followed by metal, aluminium and glass.
Wire frame or ring with central bulb: what look?
The wire frame draws a circle or oval of thin uprights and places the bulb in the centre. The eye passes through the fixture, the room feels taller and more open. The oval wire frame Kallineta in black steel measures 140 cm, the Hildegarde ring 110 cm: two formats for a large living room. Other similar models are gathered in the modern style LED ceiling lights.
Adjustable spotlights and LED tubes: which to choose?
The tube aligns several sources on a thin bar, the track of spotlights distributes and directs them. The Willora adjustable spotlights, in black steel, point towards a wall or a worktop. These black steel silhouettes appear in the black metal ceiling lights, and the more elaborate shapes in the more sculptural pieces.
What is the difference between a ceiling light and a pendant?
A ceiling light attaches flush to the ceiling or on a short canopy, with the diffuser close to the surface: it lights widely without using height. A pendant hangs down into the room by a cable or rod. A pendant ceiling light combines both: canopy at the ceiling, luminous volume hanging, without dropping to table level.
What is a hanging light called?
Three names circulate: pendant ceiling light, pendant, chandelier. Here, all models share the same mounting, a canopy at the ceiling and a luminous volume that hangs. Wire frames, rings and tubes most often carry the name pendant. These two families sit side by side in all our light fixtures.
Ceiling light or pendant: which to choose according to ceiling height?
Under 2.40 m, stay with a model close to the ceiling or a low ring, 12 to 22 cm high: you keep circulation free under the fixture. Above that, a lower pendant finds its place without getting in the way. The clearance under the lowest point remains the deciding criterion, before style.
Which pendant ceiling light for the living room or dining room?
A wide, low shape, oval or ring, covers the space without glare. The wire frames and ovals in this selection come in 70, 110 or 140 cm wide. Black, white and gold finishes match the furniture. The Fenno, square with a diffuser, plays a more graphic card.
Dining room pendant: at what height should it hang above the table?
Allow generally 70 to 80 cm between the bottom of the fixture and the tabletop, depending on the size of the diners and the length of the model. A low ring can hang a little lower than an oval. The height is adjusted during installation, before locking the cables.
Living room and dining room: what ring diameter to choose?
Aim for a diameter between one third and one half of the table length, so the light spills slightly beyond the tabletop. For a large living room, a ring of 110 to 140 cm marks the space. In terms of colour, the black finishes and the models designed for the living room cover both uses.
| Room | Shape and format | Socket or technology | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Oval, ring, large diameter | E27 or integrated LED | Available width and clearance height |
| Dining room | Ring or low oval | E27 or integrated LED | Alignment with the table |
| Bedroom | Round, ball or light ring | E14 or LED | Soft light and no glare |
| Kitchen and island | Tube, track of spotlights | Adjustable GU10 | Beam orientation on the worktop |
| Hallway and entrance | Tube, two adjustable spotlights | GU10 | Clearance in the passage |
| Bathroom | Compact model | Integrated LED | Suitable IP rating |
Kitchen and island pendant: how to choose?
Above a worktop or an island, a linear model, tube or track of adjustable spotlights, aligns with the axis of the worktop. Two or three points are enough. The GU10 socket allows the beam to be directed towards the area where you chop and cook. The Plafonia tube in steel aligns six lights over 118 cm.
Kitchen island pendants: how to align them?
A single long fixture is centred on the island. Several points are spaced evenly, never at the end of the worktop. Allow about 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the fixture and the worktop, to light without blocking the view. The kitchen ceiling lights gather these formats.
What light temperature for a kitchen?
Neutral white, around 3500 to 4500 K, keeps colours accurate on the worktop. Warm white, around 2700 to 3500 K, suits the dining area. The collection covers both ambiences, including in the modern kitchen models.
What fixture for a suspended ceiling and how to mount it without drilling?
A suspended ceiling is a secondary ceiling installed under the original ceiling, in plasterboard, tiles or slats. It creates a technical void where cables run. The mounting must therefore reach the frame or use a plug suitable for the board, because the fixture pulls on a single point. Wire frames and spotlights remain the lightest to install.
Plasterboard suspended ceiling: what anchoring point to choose?
Locate the frame before drilling, by feeling or with a detector: the boards alone will not hold a heavy fixture. If in doubt, a distribution plate spreads the load over several points. Compact models, like those in the office ceiling lights, are the easiest to install on this type of support.
How to hang a pendant from the ceiling without drilling?
No ceiling mounting is reliable without drilling or anchoring. Adhesive solutions are not designed to carry a light fixture. If drilling is impossible, a floor lamp or a table lamp is better, as they add no load to the ceiling.
E27, E14, GU10 socket or integrated LED: what does the socket change?
The socket determines the bulb you can replace. E27 and E14 are screw sockets, GU10 an adjustable pin spotlight, integrated LED cannot be replaced. An E27 or E14 model leaves the choice of temperature and power; an integrated LED stays slimmer and maintenance-free. The collection mixes these four technologies.
Warm white, neutral white or cool white: what temperature to choose?
Warm white, around 2700 to 3500 K, suits the living room, bedroom and meals. Neutral white, around 3500 to 4500 K, lights a worktop. Cool white, from 4500 to 6500 K, is reserved for passage areas. These are the standards of everyday lighting.
Dimmer: how to know if the model is compatible?
Compatibility is indicated model by model, and only part of the selection accepts it. A dimmable bulb is also required on an E27 or E14 socket. The relevant references are gathered in the dimmable models, alongside the E27 sockets.
What alternatives to a ceiling light for lighting a room?
When a ceiling light is not suitable, combine a floor lamp, wall lights, recessed spotlights or a cable pendant. The goal remains the same: layer general light and accent light, to adjust the mood according to the time of day. A low ceiling benefits from a ceiling light or wall lights rather than a long pendant.
What is the new trend in lighting?
Sources multiply in the same room, and shapes become more graphic, circles, rays, fluted cylinders. Warm materials, brass and gold finishes, are returning to understated interiors. This is what the gold colours and the Nordic inspirations show.
Can you mix several sources in the same room?
Yes, provided you keep a consistent light temperature for the general light and reserve the difference for accent lighting. Two or three sources are enough in a living room: ceiling light, accent lamp and a third near a wall. The sets with gold and black finishes make this mix easy.
How to choose without making a mistake: materials, care and warranty
Look first at the material and finish, then the IP rating. The warranty ranges from two to five years depending on the references. The dimmer remains optional on part of the selection. Steel and metal dominate, glass brings transparency, aluminium stays understated.
IP20 or IP44: what IP rating to choose?
IP20 corresponds to dry rooms: living room, bedroom, kitchen, hallway. IP44 concerns wet rooms, such as the bathroom. It is the actual use of the room that decides, not the shape of the fixture. Suitable models are gathered in the wet rooms.
How to care for a metal or glass ceiling light?
A soft cloth is enough on steel and metal, without abrasive products. Glass is cleaned with an ammonia-free glass cleaner, and plastic with clear water. Cut the power before any work. The light versions and the bedroom models are well suited to regular dusting.
| Material | Associated styles | Care |
|---|---|---|
| Steel | Modern, minimalist, industrial | Soft cloth, non-abrasive products |
| Metal | Modern, contemporary | Regular dusting |
| Aluminium | Modern, clean | Dry cloth |
| Glass | Modern, with crystal drops | Ammonia-free glass cleaner |
| Plastic | Contemporary | Damp cloth |

Frequently asked questions
Which ceiling light lights my room well?
The one whose shape and format match the surface to cover. A wide ring suits a large living room, a low oval a dining room, a tube or a track of adjustable spotlights a kitchen. The light temperature, warm white in a relaxation room, does the rest of the comfort.
Bathroom pendants: what should you check?
The IP rating above all. IP20 corresponds to dry rooms, IP44 to a wet room such as the bathroom. A compact model is preferred, far enough from the shower, and a bright light on the mirror side rather than a large hanging luminous volume.
Cable-hung spotlights: how do they work?
A track or a taut cable is fixed to the ceiling at two points, and the spotlights are positioned on it. Each GU10 spotlight is adjusted independently, which allows a worktop, a wall or an artwork to be lit. Their number and spacing are adjusted according to the length of the support.
Kitchen pendants: how many points above an island?
Generally two or three points above an island, evenly spaced to avoid shadow areas. A tube model or a track of spotlights aligned with the worktop gives an even light, and each GU10 spotlight is then directed towards the worktop.
What bulbs to put in a pendant ceiling light?
It all depends on the socket of the model. E27 and E14 sockets take screw bulbs, GU10 an adjustable pin spotlight. A ceiling light with integrated LED cannot be replaced: its temperature is set at manufacture. Then choose warm, neutral or cool white according to use.
