Paper filters light instead of reflecting it: a paper wall light gives a soft glow, with no direct glare, and casts shadows on the wall. The collection has 5 products; this selection presents some of them, in IP20, with E14 or E27 sockets or integrated LED, for the bedroom, living room, hallway, staircase and entrance.

What kind of light does a paper wall light give?

Paper filters light instead of reflecting it: a woven shade lets soft rays through and casts shadows on the wall, while an opal glass dome diffuses it more evenly. Integrated LED models, such as Cartela, give off little heat and produce a warm white between 2700 and 3500 K.

Woven paper wall light or rope shade: which mood?

The weave makes all the difference. On the Tasman woven rope basket, the golden rope crosses the paper and projects a regular pattern onto the wall, like a mesh of light. The effect is warm, slightly graphic, never dazzling: you can switch it on in the evening without the room turning white. The Bamboo Paper Hut wall light takes a more matte approach, with a mix of steel, bamboo and brown paper that absorbs more and gives a lower, calmer light, closer to a lamp fire. Count on these two models to light a corner without a ceiling light, in dimmed light.

Opal glass dome: a more even light?

Yes, and that is its whole point. The opal glass of the Niva Bronze opal dome diffuses light in every direction of the dome, with no pattern or stripe on the wall: the lighting is more even, calmer, and the eye no longer finds the hot spot of the bulb. The paper and rope that complete the model warm up the whole, and the steel holds the structure. This is the choice to make when you want to see what you are doing around the light, not just create a mood.

Which wall light for good lighting?

To light a room properly, start with the socket: E14 or E27 lets you choose the bulb and its wattage, within the 40 W max stated on these models. An integrated LED wall light is suited to accent lighting. All are IP20, so for dry indoor use only. In terms of effect, paper shapes change the light: folded or origami shade, flower shape, papier-mache.

E14, E27 or integrated LED socket: what does the bulb choice change?

E14 takes compact bulbs, E27 opens the choice to more models, including bulbs compatible with dimmable versions. On a paper shade, the colour temperature matters as much as the shape: a warm white around 2700 K warms a brown paper or a golden base, a more neutral tone around 3500 K stays discreet in a hallway. To compare models with a large screw fitting, see the E27 wall lights.

Which socket for which light
Socket Stated wattage What it means Model
Integrated LED 1.5 W Non-replaceable bulb, warm white as soon as it is switched on Cartela
E14 40 W max You choose the bulb and its colour temperature Tasman
E27 40 W max Wider choice of bulbs, varied colour temperatures Niva Bronze

How high can I go in wattage in a paper shade?

The Tasman and Niva Bronze product sheets state 40 W max: this is the limit not to exceed, whatever bulb you choose. Stay under this ceiling, and prefer a bulb that gives off little heat if the wall light stays on for a long time. On Cartela, the question does not arise: the 1.5 W integrated LED cannot be replaced and needs no calculation. For a room where you really read, a socket model remains more flexible than a fixed LED.

What height for wall lights?

Place the wall light at mid-height on the wall, with the shade just above eye level when seated, and align the two wall lights of a bed at the same height. Check the footprint before drilling: the models in the collection measure 19 to 24 cm high and 13 to 28 cm deep.

At what height should two wall lights be placed around a bed?

The reference that works: the bottom of the shade above the mattress, at shoulder height for a person sitting on the bed, so you can read without having the source in your eyes. Two wall lights are placed symmetrically in relation to the headboard, at the same distance from the edge of the mattress on each side. Depth matters as much as height: Bamboo Paper Hut projects 28 cm, Cartela only 13 cm, which changes where the pillow goes.

How to align several wall lights on the same wall?

Draw a horizontal line in pencil and mark the centre dimension of each wall light, not the bottom one: total heights differ (19 cm for Cartela, 24 cm for Tasman), and bottom alignment is immediately visible. In a hallway or on a staircase, keep the same spacing between each point and check that the light does not fall in your line of sight when climbing the steps. The designer wall lights for staircases are installed on this principle of regular repetition.

Which rooms to install a paper wall light in?

The rooms cited in the product sheets are the bedroom, living room, hallway, staircase and entrance. In practice, the bedroom calls for low, non-dazzling light, the living room for a model that stands out, the hallway and staircase for light that marks the way without direct glare.

Wall lights for an adult bedroom: how to place them around the bed?

On each side of the headboard, in place of bedside lamps, to free up the nightstand. A paper wall light works well here because it does not assault the eye on waking: the light passes through the shade instead of striking the face. For a child's bedroom or an adult who reads, the LED wall lights for the bedroom complement the selection with other effects. The toilet, cited in the product sheets, also accepts these models, provided they stay outside splash zones, as the wall lights for toilets remind us.

Designer wall lights for the staircase and hallway: which model?

A compact model with no exposed bulb, repeated at regular intervals. Cartela, with 13 cm depth and an integrated LED, fits in a narrow hallway without catching your shoulder. In a stairwell, repeating the Tasman in golden rope gives a rhythm visible from the bottom. The living room, for its part, can take a more prominent model on a feature wall or near a reading armchair: for mood, look at the LED models designed for the living room. For the entrance, a wall light near the door is enough to light an entrance without switching on the whole hallway.

The paper wall lights in the collection
Model Material Colour Dimensions W x D x H Socket and light
Bamboo Paper Hut Steel, bamboo, paper Brown 14 x 28 x 23.8 cm Not stated on the product sheet
Cartela Paper Brown 18.5 x 13 x 19 cm Integrated LED, warm white 2700 to 3500 K
Tasman Paper, woven rope Gold 14 x 18 x 24 cm E14, 40 W max
Niva Bronze Steel, opal glass, paper, rope Bronze and gold 20.3 x 24.1 x 22.7 cm E27, 40 W max

All these rooms are cited in the product sheets, which also mention the toilet. None is suitable for outdoor use: for a terrace wall, you need a much higher protection rating, to be found among the outdoor wall lights for terraces.

How to match a paper wall light with the rest of your decor?

The collection plays on three colours, brown, gold and bronze, and on materials that touch: paper, woven rope, bamboo, steel, opal glass. A paper shade goes with light wood, linen or rattan; steel and glass bring a sharper contrast to a bright room.

High-end designer wall lights: what makes the difference?

Finish is judged on the real material, not on the photographed effect: a deliberate mix of steel, rope, opal glass and paper on the same model, as on Niva Bronze, takes more work than a single-material shade. Look at the neatness of the weave, the straightness of the base, the way the shade hides the bulb. The two-year warranty, the same on all models in the collection, also gives a sign of quality. On budget, keep a relative logic: a single-material model costs less than a piece combining glass and steel.

Paper and rope, paper and gold metal, paper and opal glass: which combinations?

Paper and rope keep the room in a natural, boho register, with raw wood, rattan, crumpled linen. Paper and gold metal warm up a wall painted grey or deep green: the gold and black models show this kind of contrast. Paper and opal glass calm a very bright room, where gold alone shines too much. For a more sober and neutral effect, compare with the designer wooden wall lights.

1930s Art Deco, Art Nouveau or boho wall lights: how to find your way?

This collection is boho and paper: it does not take up the geometric codes of 1930s Art Deco wall lights or the curves of Art Nouveau. For that style, turn to the retro or vintage metal wall lights in the catalogue, and keep paper for soft light in a living room.

Where to find 1930s Art Deco and Art Nouveau wall lights?

1930s Art Deco wall lights are recognisable by their fan shapes, straight lines and polished metals; Art Nouveau prefers plant curves and worked brass. These codes are not made in woven paper. The catalogue covers them elsewhere: see the retro selection for period silhouettes, and the vintage metal wall lights for patinated brass. Paper remains complementary: it softens a room already furnished with antiques.

Can a paper wall light match an old interior?

Yes, provided you treat it as an object and not as a pastiche. A brown paper or golden rope shade works very well on a moulded wall, next to a wooden chest of drawers, because it brings a low light that period wall lights render poorly. Avoid, however, placing it right next to an Art Deco wall light: mixing the two vocabularies reads as a mismatch. For a very graphic interior, prefer the designer LED wall lights or a model in black metal.

How to install and care for a paper wall light?

The IP20 rating means these wall lights are intended for dry indoor use: not a bathroom, not a terrace. For care, a feather duster or a dry cloth is enough on a paper shade; avoid the damp sponge and cleaning products. Integrated LED models have no bulb to change.

DIY paper wall light: what to check before drilling

Switch off the power at the breaker, locate the conduit and the incoming wire, then hold the wall light against the wall to mark the fixing holes. Check the available depth: 28 cm for Bamboo Paper Hut, 24.1 cm for Niva Bronze, against 13 cm for Cartela, which decides the room the model can go in. Finally, check that the wall support holds in a solid material, or use the plugs suited to your partition. If the electrical connection is beyond you, have the wall light installed by an electrician.

How to clean a paper shade without damaging it?

A feather duster once a month on top of the shade, a soft dry cloth on the steel and rope. Brown paper marks with water: no damp sponge, no detergent, no spray directly on the shade. For dust embedded in a weave, a soft brush is enough. Cartela has no bulb or socket to unscrew: an exterior dusting is enough, and the wall light is covered for two years like the other models, excluding normal wear.

Designix reassurance: secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service. To place these wall lights within the whole catalogue, compare with the entire Designix lighting catalogue. And if you are hesitating between a bulb model and a fixed LED, note that the modern hallway wall lights and the IP44 wall lights meet other needs, particularly damp rooms.

The simplest way to decide: choose the room first, then the mounting height, and only then the model. The Tasman woven rope basket and the Cartela integrated LED wall light between them cover the two most common uses, warm mood by the bed and discreet wayfinding in the hallway.

Frequently asked questions

Can a paper wall light be installed in a bathroom?

No: the models in this collection are IP20, a rating that corresponds to dry indoor use. In a bathroom, humidity and splashes require a higher protection rating, such as the IP44 wall lights for bathrooms designed for these rooms.

Which socket to choose between E14, E27 and integrated LED?

E14 takes compact bulbs, E27 opens the choice to more models, including dimmable bulbs. The integrated LED of Cartela cannot be replaced but gives a warm white of 2700 to 3500 K. Socket models are limited to 40 W.

High-end designer wall lights: how to recognise a careful finish?

Look at the real material rather than the effect: steel, bamboo, woven rope, opal glass and paper combined on the same model, as on Niva Bronze or Bamboo Paper Hut. The precise dimensions, the stated colour and the two-year warranty give more reliable references than a photo.

Wooden wall lights or paper wall lights: which to choose?

Paper diffuses soft light and casts gentle shadows; wood reflects a more neutral light and suits bright interiors. For a bedroom or a hallway, paper softens the room; for a more sober effect, look at the designer wooden wall lights in the catalogue.

1930s Art Deco wall lights: where to find them?

This collection is boho and paper; it does not take up the geometric codes of 1930. For that style, look among the retro wall lights or the vintage metal wall lights. Paper remains a good option when you want soft light in a quiet room.
