The outdoor motion sensor wall light switches on when someone passes in front of it, then goes off by itself: the entrance, driveway or terrace stays lit at the right moment without staying on all night. This selection brings together aluminium models, mostly IP65 rated and fitted with an integrated LED, to equip a facade without a second thought.
In this guide: how the sensor works, where to install it, choosing the IP rating, the light source, the colour temperature, the materials, a table for reading the specifications, indoor use and maintenance.
How does an outdoor motion sensor wall light work?
Nothing to switch on: you arrive with your hands full, the driveway lights up, and the light fades once you have passed. The sensor sits inside the housing, behind glass or an acrylic diffuser that protects it from the rain, and it triggers the light source in the same fitting.
Outdoor motion sensor wall lights: what gets triggered
The module is added to a standard outdoor light. Detection switches it on, the timer switches it off. Depending on the reference, the wall light runs on an integrated LED, takes a bulb, or works as a simple wall light point. Square shapes dominate here, followed by cages, tubes, ovals and arcs.
Outdoor motion sensor wall light: integrated LED or bulb?
Most models carry an integrated LED, rated from 6 to 18 W depending on the reference, with 18 W the most common figure. Others take a bulb, with an E27 base on part of the selection and a G4 base on the solar model. To compare, see outdoor LED wall lights with sensor, then all motion sensor wall lights.
Where should you install an outdoor motion sensor wall light?
Mount the wall light to the side of the walkway rather than facing it, so it sweeps the area you walk into without shining into your eyes. The entrance and the terrace are the two most common uses in this selection, often rounded out by a facade, a side passage or an outdoor staircase.
The dimensions help you decide: squares sit around 26 x 12.5 cm, cylinders measure 11 to 15 cm wide by 20 to 30 cm deep. A model such as the SensorLux sensor wall light, at 26 x 13 x 10 cm, handles an entrance, while the E27 Noctivis version makes do with 11.5 cm of width.
| Installation area | What the selection offers | Key criteria | Models to look at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entrance | Square or arc wall lights, often LED | Detection combined with IP65, warm or neutral white | SensorLux, SecuriLuxe, LuminaNoir |
| Terrace | Cylinders, cages and arcs, sometimes with a bulb | IP65, soft, non-glaring light | Noctivis, Nerva, Tesvesessa, Astrum, Luvia |
| Facade and side passage | Squares, tubes and ovals | IP65 and a discreet finish, black, white or gold | Terralux, LuminMotion, VisionLumiere |
| Area with no power supply | Solar model with integrated panel | No wiring needed | Eior |
Fitting an outdoor motion sensor wall light under a canopy
Under a canopy, direct rain never reaches the housing: the wall light can sit lower to aim precisely at the walkway. Terrace models are gathered in wall lights designed for terraces.
Staircase wall lights: lighting the climb without casting shadows
On an outdoor staircase, spread the light points along the climb instead of concentrating light at the top, which keeps steps out of the shadows. A compact format 11 to 15 cm wide fits on a narrow wall. The rest of the protected models are in our IP65 selection.
Which IP rating should you choose for an outdoor wall light?
Go for IP65 on a facade exposed to rain: it is the rating on almost this entire selection, which resists water spray and dust. IP54 and IP44 cover a few models, enough under a canopy or a roof overhang that shelters them from direct rain.
Sensor wall lights: which IP rating for an exposed facade?
A wall with no shelter takes driving rain and sea spray. An IP65 housing in aluminium or metal ages well without filling with water. Most of the squares in the selection fall into this category, such as the square VisionLumiere wall light. The details of each protection rating are set out in watertight outdoor wall lights.
Sheltered outdoor areas, canopy or porch: are IP44 and IP54 enough?
Under a roof overhang or a porch, rain comes in from the side and rarely head on. An IP54 model such as the black cylindrical Lapidus wall light or an IP44 model such as the Luvia arc wall light fits there, as long as it stays sheltered.
Outdoor E27 bulb or integrated LED: which wall light should you choose?
An integrated LED keeps things simple: nothing to change, the rated power runs from 6 to 18 W and the light comes on with detection. An E27 base, by contrast, lets you choose the colour temperature and the replacement wattage, which makes it easy to revive a wall light whose light source has reached the end of its life.
Outdoor E27 bulb: how to choose it and replace it in the wall light
On a wall light with a bulb base, match the colour temperature already used elsewhere on the facade to keep the light consistent, and check the internal volume of the diffuser before fitting a bulb that is too wide. The models concerned are grouped in wall lights with an E27 base.
What an integrated LED changes day to day on a facade
No bulb to buy again, often a slimmer housing, a power rating fixed at the factory: 18 W on most models, then 15 W, 9 W, 7 W and 6 W. The solar module with a G4 base needs no wiring at all, like the Eior solar wall light, which you will find in the solar version with no wiring.
Warm white or cool white for an outdoor wall light with a sensor?
Warm white, from 2700 to 3500 K, is the most common colour temperature here, found on a large part of the models: it lights an entrance without harshness. Cool white, from 4500 to 6500 K, also covers a good share of the references, and neutral white sits between the two, around 3500 to 4500 K.
Warm white 2700 K around a front door: what effect in the evening?
Around a door, a warm colour temperature blends with the indoor light you can see through the glass and does not turn the threshold into an inspection zone. Several models offer two or three colour temperatures on the same wall light: the black finishes include several of these references.
When neutral white earns its place on a terrace
On a terrace where you eat or walk around, a neutral colour temperature brings out the colours of furniture and wood better. Cool white, meanwhile, lights a wide area and suits service areas, utility paths or parking. See the modern style models for these uses.
How do you read the specifications of an outdoor wall light?
Four lines are enough to sort them out: the IP rating, the light source, the rated power and the colour temperature. The rest, material and finish, is chosen afterwards to match the facade. The table sums up what you actually find in this collection.
| Criterion | What you find in the collection | What it means in use |
|---|---|---|
| Ingress protection rating | IP65 on the vast majority, IP54 and IP44 on a few models | IP65 for an exposed facade, IP44 or IP54 under a canopy |
| Light source | Integrated LED on most, E27 base on others, G4 base on the solar model | LED: nothing to change; E27: free choice of replacement colour temperature and wattage |
| Rated power | 18 W most often, then 15 W, 9 W, 7 W and 6 W | The higher the rated figure, the wider the wall light spreads its light |
| Colour temperature | Mostly warm white, neutral white and cool white on part of the models | Warm at the entrance, cooler to light a wide area |
| Dimmer | Possible on a small number of models | Lets you lower the brightness once you have passed through |
| Warranty | 5 years on part of the selection, 2 years on the rest | Check the model page before confirming your basket |
Which style, material and colour for a contemporary outdoor wall light?
Contemporary lines dominate this selection, with square silhouettes, cages, tubes, ovals and arcs. Aluminium leads among the materials, often combined with metal, glass or acrylic, in black or white depending on the reference.
High-end designer wall lights: what sets a well-made wall light apart
It is not size that makes the difference, but the finish: aluminium and glass assembly, a crisp edge, an acrylic diffuser that softens the light beneath the sensor. The 12.5 cm squares and the 26 x 12.5 cm squares show two complementary formats, from the most discreet to the most assertive, to pick from designer outdoor wall lights. On a light-coloured facade, the white models stand out from a distance, unlike black, which blends into a dark wall.
Wooden or Art Deco wall lights: what this selection offers
No wooden models here: the materials used are aluminium, metal, acrylic, glass and plastic, chosen to withstand the outdoors. No Art Deco either, the style stays contemporary and minimalist. For a retro feel on a facade, see a more retro look with the vintage style.
Living room, adult bedroom and staircase wall lights: where can you use them indoors?
The same wall format works indoors, in a version without a sensor: detection is no longer useful in a living space. The reference points stay the same, E27 base or LED, warm white for living areas, compact format for a hallway.
Living room wall lights: framing a sofa or a bookcase
Two wall lights on either side of a sofa or a bookcase are enough as accent lighting, at shoulder height once seated. Living room wall lights gather the models designed for this.
Adult bedroom wall lights and staircase wall lights: the useful reference points
In an adult bedroom, you want a low, warm light, placed on either side of the bed rather than on the ceiling: wall lights for adult bedrooms follow this principle. For an indoor staircase, see hallway and staircase lighting.
How do you care for an outdoor wall light and what warranty is included?
A soft cloth on the glass or acrylic and regular wiping of the housing are enough: the aluminium and metal of outdoor models cope with being outside. On the warranty side, part of the selection is covered for 5 years, the rest for 2 years, to be checked on the page of the model you choose.
Cleaning an IP65 wall light without damaging the finish
Switch off the power before you start, then wipe with clean water, without aggressive products or abrasive sponges that scratch the black and gold finishes. Check from time to time that the fixing screws are tight, especially on a facade exposed to wind.
5-year or 2-year warranty: what changes for the buyer
The period covers the housing and the module depending on the reference. On a model with an integrated LED, it carries more weight, since the light source cannot be replaced; on an E27 version, changing the bulb solves most faults. The full Designix lighting catalogue shows this information on every product page.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, accepted returns and Designix customer service: you order the right reference, or you change your mind with nothing left over.
Frequently asked questions about outdoor motion sensor wall lights
Which outdoor wall light should you choose for a terrace?
On a terrace, an IP65 wall light in aluminium or acrylic withstands the outdoors all year round. Cylindrical or cage models with an E27 bulb give off a soft light, while 18 W squares light a wider area. The sensor keeps the light from being left on permanently.
Can you fit an E27 bulb in an outdoor wall light?
Yes: several wall lights in this collection run on an E27 bulb, which leaves the choice of colour temperature and wattage at replacement time. The other models carry an integrated LED, rated from 6 to 18 W depending on the reference.
How do you light a staircase with wall lights?
On a staircase, spread the wall lights along the climb to light each step without annoying shadows. A compact model 11 to 15 cm wide fits on a narrow wall, and a sensor version suits an outdoor staircase well.
Which wall lights should you choose for a living room?
In a living room, a wall light serves as accent lighting: two models framing a sofa or a bookcase are often enough. The indoor collections gather living room wall lights without a sensor, with an E27 base or LED, using the same colour temperature guidelines.
Which wall lights for an adult bedroom?
In an adult bedroom, you want a low, warm light, placed on either side of the bed rather than on the ceiling. Wall lights for adult bedrooms are chosen in warm white and a compact format, in a finish that matches the rest of the room.
