First measure the area to be lit, then the clear height under the ceiling: a canopy or covered terrace calls for a large format, while a sheltered entrance is fine with a small diameter. All the modern outdoor ceiling lights in this collection are rated IP44 and fitted with LED, in metal, glass, aluminium, plastic or ceramic.

What is a modern outdoor ceiling light and where should you fit it?
A modern outdoor ceiling light is fixed to the ceiling of a covered terrace, under a canopy, a porch or a sheltered entrance. In this collection, all the models are rated IP44 and run on LED. Their round, globe or square shape and their white, black or light finish suit both the facade and the furniture.
Outdoor ceiling lights: canopy, covered terrace and entrance
They are always fitted under a ceiling or a structure that protects the light from direct rain. The Veila ceiling light and its opal diffuser lights a passage generously, with its 29 cm format.
Modern design outdoor lights: what changes compared with a classic model
The design plays on shape and material rather than ornament: a round flush plate, an opaline globe, a square with clean edges. The design outdoor ceiling lights take this approach, like all our lights. To compare the families, start from all outdoor ceiling lights.
Which modern outdoor ceiling light should you choose for each room or area?
It all depends on the area to cover. Under a canopy or a covered terrace, aim for a model that lights widely, such as a 26 to 29 cm round or a large format. For an entrance, a hallway or a staircase, a small 12 to 18 cm format is enough. All of them suit outdoor and terrace use.
Under a canopy or on a covered terrace
The 29 cm round of Veila and the Ø 26 cm of Galaxy cover a table or a passage without leaving a dark zone. For a large terrace or a pergola, the 120 × 42 cm large format of Kop D for large terraces spreads the light over a greater length.
In an entrance, a hallway or on a staircase
On these narrow surfaces, you want a small footprint on the ceiling. The compact Silnorina Ø 12 cm format suits a small space, and the models for lighting a hallway can be spread along the length of the passage.
In a living room, bedroom or kitchen open to the outside
Several models are suitable for a living room or bedroom as well as a terrace, such as the LED ceiling lights for bedrooms. The Peder model in 18 cm fits above a worktop in a kitchen open to the terrace.
How do you choose the size and shape of an outdoor ceiling light?
Look at the surface to be lit and the height available under the ceiling. This collection covers very different formats: a 12 cm diameter model for a specific spot, rounds of 18, 24, 26 and 29 cm, a 25 cm globe and a large 120 cm long model. Round for a diffuse effect, square to add structure.
Diameter, height and surface to light
A diameter of 12 to 18 cm suits a small space, with a shallow projection such as the 4 cm shade thickness of Peder. From 24 to 29 cm, the light reaches further and covers a whole room or a terrace. The modern style LED ceiling lights are chosen on this criterion above all.
Round, globe or square: what effect on the ceiling?
The round shape blends in and lights evenly, the globe adds a volume visible from the garden, the square gives structure to an entrance or a porch. Veltora and its ceramic base have a softer feel.
| Area to light | What matters | Recommended format | Example in the collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Covered terrace or canopy | Wide, even light | 26 to 29 cm round or large format | Veila 29 cm, Galaxy Ø 26 cm |
| Entrance, hallway, staircase | Compact format, shallow projection | 12 to 18 cm | Silnorina Ø 12 cm, Peder 18 cm |
| Living room or bedroom open to the outside | Diffuse effect, warm white light | 24 to 26 cm | Rondella 24 cm |
| Kitchen open to the terrace | Lighting close to the worktop | 18 to 25 cm | Peder 18 cm, Kuul C 25 cm |
Which socket and wattage for an LED outdoor ceiling light?
Some models have an integrated LED, others take a G9 or E27 bulb. The wattages in the collection range from 8 W to 70 W. Some models accept a dimmer to lower the intensity in the evening. The light is warm white, 2700 to 3500 K, on the models that state their colour temperature.
Integrated LED, G9 or E27 socket: what it changes
The integrated LED cannot be replaced: the effect stays even and the light is sealed. A G9 or E27 socket lets you change the bulb yourself. Silnorina and Veltora are G9, Kuul C and Kop D are E27. To sort the models, see the LED models for outdoor use.
Wattage, warm white and dimmer: setting the mood
The collection ranges from 8 W to 70 W depending on the model, with a warm white around 2700 to 3500 K for a terrace in the evening. The dimmable references let you lower the intensity as daylight fades.
| Model | Format | Material | Socket | Wattage | Dimmer | Style |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Veila | 29 cm | Plastic and metal | Integrated LED | 18 W | yes | Modern |
| Rondella | Ø 24 cm | Glass and metal | Integrated LED | 18 W | not stated | Modern |
| Peder | Ø 18 cm | Metal and glass | Integrated LED | 70 W | not stated | Modern and contemporary |
| Silnorina | Ø 12 cm | Aluminium and glass | G9 | 8 W | not stated | Modern |
| Kuul C | 25 × 25 × 22.5 cm | Metal and glass | E27 | 15 W | yes | Japanese and minimalist |
What does IP44 mean on an outdoor ceiling light?
IP44 is the protection rating of the enclosure: the first digit covers solid bodies, the second water splashes. An IP44 ceiling light is therefore suitable for a covered terrace, a canopy, a porch or a sheltered entrance, but it is not designed to stay immersed. In this collection, all the models are IP44.
IP44: what the rating really protects against
The rating covers dust and splashes coming from an angle, not a powerful jet or immersion. An IP44 rated ceiling light is therefore fitted under a roof element, never fully exposed without shelter.
Sheltered outdoor use: canopy, porch, covered terrace
If you want automatic switching when someone passes, the versions with a motion sensor complete the family. Galaxy in a white finish suits an entrance or a sheltered hallway.
How do you match an outdoor ceiling light with a modern decor?
Start from the dominant colour of the wall or facade: white blends in and stays discreet, black creates a clear contrast, while beige, green or blue act as an accent. Metal and glass dominate this collection, often in a round or globe shape, easy to match with contemporary furniture.
Modern living room decor and modern decoration: extending the room onto the terrace
An open bay window calls for continuity of light: the same warm white inside and out. Rondella, with a brushed metal ring, gives this diffuse effect in a living room facing the garden.
Modern kitchen decor: lighting a kitchen open to the outside
Above a worktop, an 18 to 25 cm format avoids overwhelming the room. The kitchen ceiling lights in a modern style stay flush with the ceiling, and the square of Kuul C, in a minimalist Japanese style, gives structure to an island.
Hallway, entrance and modern WC decor: small spaces
In a small space, the black version disappears on a dark ceiling, the white version fades into a light ceiling. A 12 cm diameter is enough for a hallway or a WC.
Outdoor ceiling light, chandelier or wall light: which fitting for the ceiling of a modern living room?
A modern living room chandelier adds a suspended piece in the centre of the room, a ceiling light stays flush with the ceiling and takes less height, a modern living room wall light lights from the side. Under a canopy, an entrance or a hallway, the IP44 outdoor ceiling light is the only one of the three designed for outdoor use.
Modern chandelier or chic and modern chandelier: when to prefer it to a ceiling light?
The chandelier is chosen when the ceiling is high and the room needs a focal point, in a living room or a dining room. To keep a material effect without coming down from the ceiling, modern crystal ceiling lights remain an option.
Modern dining room chandelier and modern kitchen chandelier: the rooms where you hang a light
Above a table, a modern dining room chandelier lights the tabletop and can be adjusted in height. The kitchen follows the same logic above an island, provided the ceiling allows it and the room is tall enough.
Modern living room wall light: complementing a ceiling light
A wall light lights a wall, a picture or a reading corner without taking up the ceiling. It combines well with a ceiling light to light a living room or equip a study.
How do you install and care for an outdoor ceiling light?
Switch off the power at the circuit breaker, fix the bracket to the ceiling or to the canopy structure, connect according to the instructions, then put the diffuser back in place. For care, a soft cloth is enough: glass and metal can be cleaned without aggressive products, and the opal diffuser should be dusted regularly.
Installing an outdoor ceiling light under a canopy
Check that the bracket is screwed into a solid material and that the diffuser seal is in place before switching the power back on. A compact format can be fitted on its own, several models can be spread along a passage or in a hallway to be lit in a row.
Cleaning and caring for a metal and glass ceiling light
Brushed metal and glass are cleaned with a soft cloth, without abrasives. The ceramic of Veltora needs a gentle product, and the aluminium of the small formats only suffers from overly aggressive products.
The warranty is two years on most models and five years on others. Choose your diameter first, 12 to 18 cm for a passage, 24 to 29 cm for a room or a terrace: the rest follows.

What is the best outdoor light?
There is no single model: it all depends on the location and the surface to be lit. Under a canopy or a covered terrace, an IP44 ceiling light with integrated LED lights widely and evenly. For an entrance or a hallway, a small format is enough. All the models in this collection are rated IP44.
Where can I find outdoor ceiling lights?
In the Designix outdoor collections: outdoor ceiling lights, LED outdoor ceiling lights and design outdoor ceiling lights. The models are in metal, glass, aluminium, plastic or ceramic, in white, black or light finishes, all rated IP44 and fitted with LED.
Can a modern outdoor ceiling light also light a living room or a bedroom?
Yes, several models also suit indoor use. Rondella, Galaxy, Peder, Veltora, Silnorina, Kuul C and Kop D are suitable for a living room or a bedroom as well as outdoors and on a terrace. Their flush shape and diffuser make them discreet in a living space.
What does the IP44 rating on an outdoor ceiling light protect against?
IP44 protects the enclosure against solid bodies and water splashes. This covers a covered terrace, a canopy, a porch or a sheltered entrance, but not immersion. All the models in this collection are rated IP44, with an integrated LED or a G9 or E27 socket.
