A linen lampshade filters light instead of reflecting it: the filament disappears and the room receives a soft, matte light. First choose the diameter according to the piece of furniture that holds the lamp, then the shape (round, tube or teardrop), and finally the colour, white, black or grey, with or without a gold interior. The entire selection fits E27.
To get your bearings before diving into the details, browse all our lighting: you will see how the same lampshade behaves on a table lamp, a pendant or a floor lamp.
What is a linen lampshade and what light does it give?
A linen lampshade filters light instead of reflecting it: the filament is hidden, the room receives a soft, matte light. All models in this selection fit an E27 socket and are rated IP20, for dry indoor use, in round, tube or teardrop shape, from white to black. It is also the accessory that dresses the light fixture: its shape, material and colour determine the effect in the room.
Natural linen lampshade or white linen lampshade: what is the difference?
Natural, undyed linen keeps an ecru weave that absorbs part of the light and slightly warms the halo. White-dyed linen reflects more: the lamp lights more brightly and blends into a light wall. A large white cylinder like Linella, large white linen cylinder, brightens a room without making a statement.
Artisanal linen lampshade: what the fabric changes in the light
A tight weave lets less light through: the edges of the lampshade stay sharp, the shadow is more defined. A more open weave diffuses a softer halo. Fabric tension matters just as much: if it is not taut, it ripples and the light comes out in waves. That is why two lampshades of the same diameter and the same E27 socket do not give the same atmosphere.
Which material for a lampshade?
Linen is suitable for soft light and a matte finish; translucent fabric lets more light through, velvet holds it back and makes the atmosphere more cosy, wood and a gold interior reflect it downwards. Here, linen is the base material, sometimes combined with velvet, wood or fabric. All shapes remain available with an E27 base.
Fabric lampshade or linen lampshade: which to choose?
Translucent fabric, like that of fabric lampshades, is suitable when you want more clarity on a work surface. Linen is the right choice when you want to avoid glare: it mattifies the bulb's brightness and is better suited to a room for resting. A compact model like Nix, in linen, 30 cm, clearly shows this compromise between linen and directed light.
Linen, velvet or wood: what is the inside of the lampshade for?
A light interior diffuses upwards and to the sides. A gold interior, on the other hand, reflects light downwards: the table is better lit, the halo stays warm. The models with a gold interior in the selection are mostly black, like those in the black colour series. Wood, for its part, is mainly used on bases and frames.
What is the rule for choosing a lampshade?
The rule is all about proportion: a lampshade should cover the socket and come down roughly to where the base begins, with a diameter at least equal to half the height of the base. Here, cylinders range from 18 to 50 cm in diameter, to be chosen according to the table or piece of furniture that holds the lamp.
What is the ideal height of a lampshade for a lamp?
On a table lamp, allow for a lampshade height that covers the socket and the bulb without touching them, generally between 15 and 20 cm for a table model. Too short, it reveals the ring and the base; too long, it overwhelms the base. The 15 and 20 cm heights in the selection correspond to these common proportions.
Which linen lampshade shape for which diameter?
The larger the diameter, the simpler the shape should remain: a wide cylinder stays harmonious, a wide teardrop becomes massive. A narrow tube suits small tables, a tapered shape suits large ones. The rest of the catalogue follows the same principles of proportion, to be seen in modern models.
| Shape | Light effect | Room where it works | Examples from the collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round, cylindrical | Soft light distributed all around | Living room, bedroom, office | Linella, Cylène, Seren, Sylvo |
| Tube | More vertical lighting, slim silhouette | Living room, office | Lornoristo |
| Teardrop | Light concentrated downwards | Bedside, small table | Nyxo |
| Tapered | Wide light, stable base on a table | Living room, dining room | Zennorara |
Which lampshade colour to choose?
A white lampshade diffuses and brightens, a black lampshade contains the light and creates a strong contrast, a grey lampshade stays neutral. When the interior is gold, the light going upwards returns downwards in a warmer halo. This collection offers these three colours, with or without a gold interior, all in E27.
Black or white linen lampshade: which lights better?
White lets out more light: the room appears brighter at the same power. Black holds it back and concentrates it, often downwards. The choice therefore depends on use: white for reading or working, black for ambient light. The white finish series covers light rooms.
Does a gold interior really change the light?
Yes, especially on a dark lampshade: the black fabric absorbs, the gold face reflects. As a result, the light coming out from below takes on a warmer tone and better illuminates the surface under the lamp. That is the point of a model like Lumiano Ø40 cm placed above a table, or a cylinder with a gold interior.
Which linen lampshade for the living room, bedroom or office?
The living room calls for large cylinders and tapered shapes of 40 to 50 cm, the bedroom an intermediate size that softens without glare, the office a compact model that lights towards the work surface. The dining room lends itself to large formats placed above the table, on a pendant.
Linen lampshade for a table lamp
On a table lamp, diameter dictates everything: from 18 to 30 cm on a side table or bedside table, up to 40 cm on a large piece of furniture. To light the living room, a 50 cm cylinder like Seren, light grey cylinder Ø50 cm dresses a console without overwhelming it. For bedroom light, stay between 20 and 30 cm. In a baby's room, a closed model that completely hides the bulb is preferable.
Linen lampshade for a pendant
On a pendant, first check that the socket is E27, then the top opening of the lampshade: it must match the socket diameter to hold without forcing the ring. Avoid large diameters on a low pendant, they get in the way. A 48 cm lampshade is suitable for a pendant above a dining table.
| Room | Shape to favour | Diameter observed in the collection | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Cylinder or tapered | 40 to 50 cm | Linella, Seren |
| Bedroom | Medium cylinder that softens | 20 to 30 cm | Sylvo, Zennorano |
| Office | Compact format, light towards the work surface | 30 cm | Nix |
| Dining room | Large format for a pendant above the table | 48 cm | Zennorara |
| Floor lamp | Large cylinder or drum | 40 cm | Tamburo |
How to hang a lampshade from the ceiling?
Turn off the circuit breaker, check that the socket is E27, screw the lampshade onto the socket then the bulb, without forcing the ring. As all models in the selection are IP20, they remain for dry indoor use: avoid in a bathroom or damp room.
How to fit a lampshade on an E27 socket?
Unscrew the existing bulb, check that the thread is E27, then slide the lampshade ring onto the socket and tighten by hand. Replace the bulb without excessive force: linen does not tolerate pressure on the frame. The rest of the assembly does not depend on the lampshade, but on the light fixture that holds it: see all E27 socket light fixtures.
Where to avoid a linen lampshade in the home?
Anywhere the air is damp: bathroom, laundry room, covered outdoor area. The IP20 rating means the light fixture is protected against contact and solid dust, not against water splashes. A linen lampshade has no place above a sink or a bathtub, even at a good distance.
How to care for and change the fabric of a linen lampshade?
Dust dry with a soft cloth or a soft-bristled brush, without wetting the linen or rubbing: water marks the fibre and leaves rings. If the lampshade is stained, rather replace the fabric on the original frame, after checking that the socket remains E27.
How to change the fabric of a lampshade?
You start with a metal frame with an E27 socket: remove the old fabric, stretch the new one over the rings by gluing or sewing it, then close the ring around the socket. The result depends mainly on the tension of the fabric and its opacity. That is also the definition of a lampshade: the accessory that hides the bulb, softens the brightness and dresses the light fixture.
Can you revamp a damaged lampshade rather than replace it?
Yes, if the frame is sound and the ring intact. Then re-stretch a new fabric, or change material family by choosing a model among the fabric lampshades. If the frame is bent or the ring split, replacement is safer: start again with a complete model from our lampshade range, checking the E27 base.
How to match a linen lampshade with the rest of the room?
Linen matches light wood, natural fibres and white or ecru walls; a grey lampshade softens a very colourful interior, a black lampshade structures a light room. Round shapes remain the easiest to combine, tubes and teardrops are reserved for rooms where the lamp is alone.
Linen lampshade and wooden furniture: what match?
Linen keeps a matte texture that responds well to the grain of light wood, without competing in shine. A wooden base with a black lampshade and gold interior works in an already light living room: this is the case with Tamburo on a wooden base. For a dining table, a grey tapered shade like Zennorara, grey tapered stays discreet above the tabletop.
Grey linen lampshade: with which walls?
Grey goes with everything, but it matches better with white, ecru or light grey walls than with a very saturated background, where it can look dull. In a dark room, prefer white or a gold interior to lift the light. The contemporary style models and black ones like Nyxo in teardrop shape require a light decor to stand out.
Frequently asked questions
A glass or linen lampshade for a bedside lamp?
Glass lets the bulb be seen and diffuses a more direct light, useful when reading. Linen, on the other hand, softens: the filament disappears and the light stays gentle, which is better suited to a bedroom bedside lamp. The linen models in this collection are all E27 base and IP20.
Lampshade for a floor lamp: is linen suitable?
Yes, provided you choose a large format: on a floor lamp, a lampshade that is too small lets light escape upwards and lights poorly downwards. A wide cylinder, like a black linen model on a wooden base, gives a more useful downward light in a living room.
Can you fit a linen lampshade on a wall light?
Only if the wall light is fitted with an E27 socket, like the lampshades in this collection. Also check the fixing: linen remains light, but the wall light must support the chosen diameter. As all these models are IP20, use remains for dry indoor areas.
Can you dress a chandelier or pendant with a linen lampshade?
Yes, a linen lampshade fits on a pendant as long as the socket is E27. It is better to choose a model whose top opening matches the socket and avoid large diameters on a low pendant, so as not to get in the way.
Which colour goes well with linen colour?
Linen pairs with white, ecru, beige, light wood and greys. In a very light room, a black lampshade adds contrast; in an already dark room, a white or grey lampshade brightens. A gold interior, for its part, warms the light without changing the fabric colour.
