First check the bulb holder, then the light temperature, then the overall size: these three points alone decide the choice. This selection brings together LEDs in E27, E14, G9, GU10 and GX53, in warm white, neutral white and cool white, all IP20 for indoor use.
Contents: choosing, temperature, holder by fixture, open kitchen, modern decor, professional and outdoor kitchen, replacement and care, other rooms.
How to choose a kitchen light bulb?
Three points decide the choice: the bulb holder (E27, E14, G9, GU10 or GX53), the light temperature and the size of the bulb. All the kitchen light bulbs in this selection are IP20 LEDs, intended for indoor use and to be installed away from water splashes. So start with the socket, the rest follows.
Kitchen lighting: the three criteria to check
The holder first, because a bulb of the wrong format will not fit. The temperature next, depending on the area to be lit: preparation or meals. The size last, especially under a flat ceiling light or in a low pendant, where a bulb that is too tall touches the diffuser. Power is set last, once these three points are confirmed. To identify the socket families, the G9 bulbs and other small holders range groups the pin formats, shorter than a screw bulb.
Kitchen lamp: identifying the right holder on the old bulb
Unscrew the bulb in place: its holder is engraved on it or recognisable to the nearest centimetre. An E27 is the large screw socket, an E14 the small one, a G9 and a GU10 are distinguished by the spacing of the pins, a GX53 is a flat disc. If the old bulb has disappeared, it is the fixture socket you need to look at. The E27, E14, G9, GU10 LED bulbs catalogue covers these five families, and all the home's light fixtures lets you find the model fitted.
| Holder | Bulbs in the collection | Format L x H | Temperatures | Typical kitchen use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| G9 | G9 4.5W, G9 4000K 4.5W 460 lm, 2 G9 High Power Cool White Bulbs | 1.8 x 5 cm to 5.8 cm high | Warm white, neutral white, cool white (High Power version) | Ceiling lights, wall lights and pendants with small sockets |
| E27 | E27 3000K 7W 760 lm, E27 7.5W | 6 x 10.5 cm and 4.5 x 8.9 cm | Warm white, neutral white | Chandeliers, pendants, ceiling lights and worktop lamps |
| E14 | E14 7.5W | 4.5 x 8.9 cm | Warm white, neutral white | Small fixtures, slim pendants, wall lights |
| GU10 | GU10 7W | 5 x 5.6 cm | Warm white, neutral white | Recessed spotlights and tracks above the worktop |
| GX53 | GX53 7W and 7.5W | 7.3 x 2.6 cm | Warm white, neutral white | Flat ceiling lights when available height is limited |
What light for a kitchen: warm white or neutral white?
Warm white gives an amber light that is pleasant in the dining corner; neutral white lights the worktop without a yellow cast. This selection covers both, from warm white 2700-3500K to neutral white 3500-4500K, with a few models in cool white 4500-6500K.
Kitchen LED light: choosing between 2700K, 3000K and 4000K
Around 2700K, the light leans amber: ideal above a table, less precise for chopping vegetables. Around 3000K, the white stays warm but sharper, which suits an island that also serves as a dining spot. At 4000K, neutral white renders food colours and reads labels effortlessly. The 2700K bulbs and the 3000K bulbs for warm white let you adjust this rendering by area.
Lighting a dark kitchen: how to gain brightness?
You gain more by multiplying light points than by raising the power of a single source: directed neutral white light on the worktop, warmer general lighting to move around. The powers in the selection range from 3 W to 7.5 W, with for example 460 lm or 760 lm on some models. Cool white, present on a G9 version in the selection, is best kept for technical areas.
| Temperature | Rendering | Where to favour it |
|---|---|---|
| Warm white 2700-3500K | Amber light | Dining corner, island, evening atmosphere |
| Neutral white 3500-4500K | White light without a yellow cast | Worktop, preparation, reading labels |
| Cool white 4500-6500K | Very white light | Technical areas and additional lighting |
Which holder to choose for a ceiling light, a chandelier or a kitchen pendant?
The holder depends on the fixture, not the room. A flat kitchen ceiling light often takes a GX53 or a G9, a chandelier or hanging pendant an E27 or an E14, a spotlight track a GU10. Check the socket before ordering the bulb.
Kitchen ceiling light and kitchen pendant: G9, GX53 or E27?
Under a flat ceiling light, the available height is low: the flat GX53 bulb for ceiling lights is no more than 2.6 cm and slips into the housing. A small pin socket is more likely to be fitted in a ceiling light or a wall light, with the G9 4000K 4.5 W bulb in neutral white. A hanging pendant takes the E27 3000K 7 W 760 lm bulb, visible and warm above the island.
Kitchen chandelier and large chandelier for high ceilings: which bulb?
On a chandelier with several sockets, you look for bulbs of a contained format so the arms do not cross: the small E14 sockets suit slim fixtures, the large E27 screw socket larger volumes. Under a high ceiling, an E27 10.5 cm high remains discreet. For a spotlight track, the GU10 spotlights for kitchen tracks fit directly into the adjustable supports.
How to light an open kitchen onto the living room?
In an open kitchen, you separate uses without multiplying sources: neutral white above the worktop for preparing, warm white on the dining and living side. Keeping the same temperature family avoids a visible border between the kitchen and the rest of the room.
Lighting an open kitchen: two temperatures, two zones
The preparation area takes a neutral white, which does not yellow food. The table and sofa prefer a warm white, more restful in the evening. Two neighbouring temperatures, for example 3000K and 4000K, read as a continuity rather than a break. The bulbs for a living room chandelier catalogue lets you align the living room lighting with the kitchen's.
Open kitchen: which bulb not to dazzle from the sofa?
What dazzles is a bare source in the line of sight, not the temperature. So you aim spotlights towards the worktop and keep pendants above the island, at seated eye level. A bulb with frosted glass or a low-profile holder limits this discomfort. The choice of fixture matters here as much as the bulb, as the light fixtures for every room selection shows.
How to light a modern kitchen decor?
A modern kitchen decor is lit with simple lines: discreet spotlights on the worktop, a slim pendant above the island, a flat ceiling light when height is limited. Glass, ceramic or crystal bulbs add a visible finish in an open fixture.
Modern kitchen chandelier and trendy kitchen ceiling light: which bulb?
In an open fixture, the bulb is part of the decor: glass, ceramic, crystal, plastic or linen depending on the model, in white, orange or red, and tube-shaped on one reference. The modern style bulbs and the glass bulbs family give that clean finish that goes with a kitchen with smooth surfaces. For an exceptional room, the G9 version with crystalline luminance plays on a visible material and a cool white.
Italian design kitchen pendant: which light temperature?
A slim pendant above an island is looked at as much as it lights. A warm white sets a dining mood there, a neutral white lights more sharply if the same pendant serves the worktop. The rule is one sentence: the lower and closer to the eye the pendant, the more comfortable the warm temperature.
How to light a professional kitchen or an outdoor kitchen?
All the bulbs in this selection are IP20, so reserved for indoor use and away from water splashes. For an outdoor kitchen or a very damp station, you need a fixture and a bulb with a higher protection rating, which this collection does not offer.
Lighting a professional kitchen: what changes compared with a home kitchen
The bulbs in this selection suit a home kitchen, even a heavily used one. A professional station exposes fixtures to steam, grease and jet washing, which requires equipment with a higher protection rating and more frequent replacement. The socket formats, however, remain the same: E27, G9 or GU10.
Outdoor kitchen light: why IP20 is not enough
IP20 protects against finger contact, not water. Under an awning, damp air and temperature variations are enough to blow a poorly protected fixture. For an outdoor worktop, you therefore choose a suitable fixture before thinking about the bulb. Indoors and dry, the 220V LED bulbs in the selection fit without modifying the circuit.
How to change and care for a kitchen bulb?
Cut the power to the fixture before any handling. Pin holders, G9, GU10 and GX53, go straight into the socket without forcing; an E27 or an E14 screws in. Note the holder, the temperature and the maximum size accepted by the fixture before buying.
Kitchen bulbs: recognising the right holder before buying
Measure before ordering: the total height of an E27 reaches 10.5 cm, an E14 8.9 cm, a GU10 5.6 cm, a GX53 only 2.6 cm. A shade or diffuser close to the holder requires a short bulb. The warranty is 5 years on most of the selection, which leaves time to normally wear out a heavily used kitchen fixture.
Changing a G9 or GU10 bulb: the simple steps
On a G9, pull or push the bulb straight into its two holes, without a lever movement: the pins are thin and break if you twist them. On a GU10, align the two lugs, push, then turn a quarter turn. For a dimmable bulb, the dimmable LED bulbs avoid the buzzing and flickering of non-compatible models.
Are these bulbs also suitable for the living room, bedroom or hallway?
Yes: most of the bulbs in the selection are listed for the kitchen as well as the living room, dining room, bedroom and hallway. An E27 or an E14 can be reused from one room to another, while a G9, a GU10 or a GX53 remains tied to the fixture that hosts it.
Fixture for a toilet and hallway: which bulb to choose?
A small toilet or hallway fixture is satisfied with a low-power bulb: a G9, a GX53 or an E14 is enough to move around, in warm white or neutral white. These are the same references as those intended for the kitchen, which simplifies replacements. The bulbs for a small toilet or hallway fixture catalogue groups these formats, and the soft lighting for the bedroom or the bulbs for the office complete the home.
Can you keep the same light temperature in every room?
Yes, provided you choose an intermediate value: a warm white around 3000K suits a kitchen as well as a living room or a hallway. Neutral white is reserved for work and reading rooms, and you avoid mixing warm white and cool white in the same open room. The LED bulbs in the selection all follow this logic of constant temperature.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service accompany every order. Check your fixture's holder, then join the home bulb selection and its G9, E27, E14, GU10 and GX53 references.
Frequently asked questions about kitchen bulbs
How many lumens are needed for a kitchen?
It depends on the surface and the fixture. In a kitchen, it is better to combine several light points than a single strong source: directed light on the worktop, softer in the dining corner. In this selection, the powers range from 3 W to 7.5 W, with for example 460 lm or 760 lm on some models.
How do you know if it is E27 or E14?
The E27 is the large screw socket, the E14 the small one: it is the diameter that distinguishes them. Look at the holder of the bulb to be replaced or the fixture socket. This selection offers both, in 7 W and 7.5 W, in warm white and neutral white.
Which ceiling light to choose for a kitchen?
It all depends on the available height and the light wanted: flat models often take a GX53 or a G9, deeper shapes an E27 or an E14. It is the holder stated by the fixture that decides, not the room. Check it before ordering.
Which bulb for a kitchen pendant?
A hanging pendant above an island or a table is most often fitted in E27 or E14, with a visible bulb. Choose warm white for meals and neutral white if the pendant also lights the worktop. Both temperatures exist in the collection.
Which bulbs for a toilet or hallway fixture?
A small toilet or hallway fixture is satisfied with a low-power bulb: a G9, a GX53 or an E14 in warm white or neutral white is enough to move around. These same bulbs are listed for the kitchen, living room and dining room.
