To dress a bedroom wall, first work out the cable length you need, then choose the power supply based on the distance to the socket: mains, batteries or a rechargeable battery. Warm light and evenly spaced points are enough above a headboard, on a shelf or around a mirror.
Which bedroom wall lights should you choose?
Bedroom wall lights come down to three things: the cable length relative to the wall you want to dress, the type of power supply (mains, batteries or rechargeable battery) and the light colour, warm for a restful mood. The collection has 138 models.
Bedroom wall lights: length, light points and power supply
Measure the actual route, from the first hook to the socket, including any turns around corners. Above a headboard, a continuous line works better than a tight zigzag: light points are usually spaced every fifteen to twenty centimetres. Density changes everything, few points for an adult bedroom, more for a child's room. The thinness of the wire matters as much as the number of points: sheathed copper wire, braided cotton or a metal support all look different. LED string lights cover most uses, including the finest models.
Decorative bedroom string lights: aim for a warm, soft light
In a bedroom, colour temperature is what makes it comfortable. A warm white, around 2700 to 3000 K, gives that amber light that invites rest; above 4000 K, the light shifts towards neutral white and strains the eyes at bedtime. This is a general lighting guideline, to be checked on each model's spec sheet. A dimmer or a timer adds the missing touch: dimming in the evening, switching off without getting up. Indoor string lights come in these warm shades.
Where should you hang wall lights in the bedroom?
In a bedroom, wall lights go first and foremost behind the headboard, then on a shelf, around a mirror or along a beam. Avoid the wall facing the bed, which strains the eyes at bedtime, and keep the cable run within reach of a socket.
Bedroom wall decor: the walls that work best
The headboard wall remains the best spot: the light stays behind the sleeper, out of direct view. A bookshelf or an exposed beam gives a natural line. Around a mirror, a window frame and a reading corner also work. This type of wall string light then runs in one continuous line, with no cable trailing on the floor.
String lights above the bed: height and fixing
Above a bed, add more fixing points so the cable stays flat against the wall, with no loop dangling over the sleeper. As a rule, allow 60 to 80 cm between the top of the mattress and the line: high enough not to be touched when sitting up, low enough to stay in view. The switch stays within reach from the bed. This approach follows the spirit of ambient lighting, to browse in all our lighting.
| Room or use | Type of string light | Preferred power supply | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult bedroom, headboard wall | Discreet wire or spaced light points | Mains if a socket is nearby, otherwise rechargeable battery | Length relative to the wall, warm light, accessible switch |
| Baby's or young child's room | Battery or rechargeable model, no small detachable parts | Batteries or rechargeable battery | Fixed out of reach of the bed, no taut cable |
| Child's or teenager's room | Decorative string light, visible shape or support | Batteries, battery or mains | Density of light points, strength of the fixing |
| Hallway, staircase, stairwell | Generous length, evenly spaced light points | Mains or low voltage | Cable run, socket access, mounting height |
| Balcony, terrace, window | Model designed for outdoor use | Solar or mains depending on exposure | Product's protection rating and exposure to rain |
How do you install wall lights without drilling or damaging the wall?
Without drilling, fix the string light with adhesive hooks or clips on a curtain rod, adding regular fixing points so the cable does not sag. Test the adhesive on a hidden area, unplug before handling and run the cable down to the socket.
Fixing string lights to a wall without drilling
Adhesive hooks suit smooth, painted walls, provided you fit more than you need: a fixing every thirty to forty centimetres prevents the drooping effect. On a curtain rod, a moulding or a skirting board, clips are enough. On a wooden support or an old wall, a very fine nail can take over. Always unplug before handling, and preferably choose rechargeable string lights when the wall is far from any socket.
Running the cable neatly down to the socket
The cable runs down a wall corner or behind a piece of furniture, in an adhesive trunking that matches the wall colour. Avoid routes across a door and loops on the floor. Another option when no socket is reachable: a solar string light placed near a window, which recharges in daylight with no connection.
Which wall decor for a child's, baby's or adult bedroom?
For a baby's or young child's room, choose a battery or rechargeable string light, fixed out of reach of the bed, with no taut cable. For an adult bedroom, prefer a clean line, fewer light points and a length matched to the wall you want to dress.
Wall decor for a baby's and child's room: what matters first
Safety comes before style. A battery or rechargeable model removes the wire running to the socket, and a high fixing, out of reach, stops anyone pulling on it. Avoid models with small detachable parts and taut cables. The light stays warm and is never aimed at the bed. Among the wall string lights for a child's room, cotton or rattan shapes are easy to clean.
Girl's room, boy's room and adult bedroom: adapting style and light density
For a child's room, shape and material carry the decor: cotton pompoms, twisted threads, small exposed bulbs. For an adult bedroom, reduce the density: a discreet wire, a few light points, a well-flattened line. Warm light and a dimmer are then enough to make the difference between a subtle touch and a cluttered wall.
Wall string lights or wall light: which should you choose?
For a bohemian wall light, favour natural materials. For an original wall light, opt for distinctive shapes. For a modern living room, choose clean lines.
Wall string lights decorate and give off ambient light; a wall light, on the other hand, actually lights the room, is fixed to the building and is chosen according to the room, living room, staircase or toilet. A powerful LED wall light or a waterproof outdoor model meets a lighting need, not just a decorative one.
Living room, staircase or toilet wall light: when it replaces string lights
As soon as you need to read, move around or light a passage, the wall light takes over. On a staircase, it lights the steps without taking up floor space, which string lights cannot do: see the models for dressing a staircase. In a toilet or shower room, the proximity of moisture calls for suitable protection, such as models with IP44 protection.
Powerful LED wall light and waterproof outdoor wall light: what string lights cannot do
A powerful LED wall light illuminates a whole room, with an intensity that ambient string lights cannot reach. Outdoors, exposure to rain calls for a high rating, in particular models with an IP65 rating or a product designed for outdoor use. The two uses can coexist: the wall light to see, the string light for atmosphere.
Which power supply for bedroom wall lights?
220 V mains suits a string light permanently fixed near a socket; 24 V low voltage makes running the cable easier. Batteries and rechargeable batteries free up placement when the wall is far from a socket, while solar powers string lights placed near a window or outdoors.
Mains or low-voltage string lights: the permanent installation
Once the line is chosen for several years, a fixed connection saves you thinking about batteries. 220 V mains models keep a constant brightness; the power supply unit slips behind a piece of furniture. 24 V low voltage uses a more flexible cable, easier to press against the wall and hide in trunking.
Rechargeable, battery or solar string lights: freedom of placement
With no socket nearby, a USB rechargeable battery is the answer for daily use: recharge it when it dims, with no wire running across the room. Batteries suit occasional use. Near a window or on a balcony, solar LED string lights need no connection at all, provided they get enough light during the day.
| Power supply | Where to use it | What it brings | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 220 V mains | Wall near a socket, permanent installation | Constant light, no battery replacement | Cable length to the socket |
| 24 V low voltage | Permanent installation, cable to be routed | More flexible cable to hide | Plan where the power supply unit goes |
| Batteries | Wall far from any socket | Free placement | Plan for replacing the batteries |
| Rechargeable battery | Daily use, wall without a socket | Recharging with no permanent cable | Remember to recharge regularly |
| Solar panel | Window, balcony, outdoors | No electrical connection | Depends on light exposure |
How do you care for wall lights and make them last?
Unplug or remove the batteries before any cleaning, dust dry without immersing the string light and unhook it by holding the fixing, never by pulling the cable. Storing it flat, away from moisture, prevents loose contacts from one season to the next.
A soft cloth or a brush is enough on the light points and the insulation. Check the condition of the cable and sheath each time you take it down: a cracked area or an LED out in a series justifies a replacement. For a string light that stays outside, the product's protection rating determines its exposure to rain: a model designed for outdoor use withstands what an indoor model does not. Out of season, coil the string light loosely around a board, without pulling tight, and store it away from moisture.
What mistakes should you avoid before ordering?
Before ordering, measure the wall you want to dress and check that the cable reaches the socket, choose a warm light for a bedroom, a fixing suited to the surface and a sufficient protection rating if the string light stays outside. These four points prevent most returns.
Length is measured before, not after: a cable that is too short forces you to move the socket or stretch the wire across the room. The power supply must match the location, mains where a socket exists, battery elsewhere. Light that is too cool in a bedroom ruins the evening mood, and a fixing unsuited to the surface makes the string light fall within days. Finally, an indoor model placed on a terrace will not survive a rainy season.
At Designix, payment is secure, delivery is tracked and returns are possible, with a customer service team you can reach if the format does not fit. The choice continues in our lighting universe, to match string lights, wall lights and the room's lighting.
Frequently asked questions about bedroom wall lights
Which child's bedroom wall decor lasts over time?
A string light fixed with regular fixing points and a power supply suited to the location lasts better than a model simply placed. Favour a non-taut cable, batteries or a rechargeable battery to avoid a wire running to the socket, and dry cleaning.
Which baby's bedroom wall decor is safe?
For a baby's room, choose a battery or rechargeable string light, fixed out of reach of the bed and with no accessible cable. Avoid models with small detachable parts, check the fixing before each use and light with a warm light, never aimed at the bed.
Does a powerful LED wall light replace wall string lights?
No: a wall light illuminates the room and serves as functional lighting, whereas string lights give off ambient light. If you need to read or move around, a powerful LED wall light, in a living room or on a staircase, will be more suitable. Both can coexist in the same room.
Can you use a waterproof outdoor wall light in a bedroom?
Technically, a waterproof outdoor model also works indoors, but its protection rating adds nothing in a bedroom, where humidity is low. It remains useful on a terrace or an adjoining balcony. Indoors, choose a model designed for that use instead.
How do you hang wall lights above the bed without drilling?
Use adhesive hooks first tested on a hidden area, or clips on a curtain rod and a moulding. Spread out the fixing points so the cable does not dangle above the sleeper, keep the switch accessible and run the cable neatly down to the socket.
