A bathroom chandelier transforms a functional room into a true wellness space. However, unlike the living room or bedroom, the bathroom imposes strict electrical constraints: safety zones, IP protection ratings, and humidity resistance. At Designix, we offer 24 bathroom-suitable light fixtures starting from €149, all compliant with current standards. This guide explains how to choose the right model without compromising on safety or style.
Electrical standards in the bathroom: zones, IP ratings, and safety
The NF C 15-100 standard divides the bathroom into four zones, each with its own requirements for protection against water. This is the first thing to check before buying a bathroom chandelier.
| Zone | Location | Minimum IP | Chandelier allowed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zone 0 | Inside the bathtub or shower tray | IPX7 (immersion) | No — no hanging light fixtures |
| Zone 1 | Above the bathtub/shower up to 2.25m | IP44 or IP65 | Recessed or IP44+ ceiling lights only |
| Zone 2 | 60 cm around zone 1 + above the sink | IP44 | Yes, if IP44 minimum |
| Out of zone | The rest of the bathroom (> 60 cm from water points) | IP20 (standard) | Yes, any type of chandelier |
What does IP44 mean? The first digit (4) = protection against solid objects > 1 mm. The second digit (4) = protection against water splashing from all directions. An IP44 chandelier is splash-proof, but not resistant to direct jets. For an open shower (walk-in style), opt for IP65 on the ceiling directly above.
Simple rule: if your chandelier is installed in the center of the ceiling of a bathroom larger than 4m², it is likely in an "out of zone" area. You can then install any light fixture. If your bathroom is small (less than 4m²), measure the distance between the water source and the chandelier — 60cm minimum to be in Zone 2.
Modern bathroom chandelier: clean lines and integrated LED
A modern bathroom chandelier is characterized by simple geometric shapes, matte finishes (black, white, chrome), and an integrated LED light source. The advantage of LEDs in the bathroom: they barely heat up, consume little energy, and resist ambient humidity better than halogen bulbs.
2026 trends for modern bathrooms:
- Frosted glass globe — diffuses light evenly, creates a spa atmosphere. Ideal above a freestanding bathtub.
- Hanging LED ring — minimalist circle of light, often in brushed aluminum or matte black. 40 to 60cm diameter for a medium-sized bathroom.
- Multi-pendant linear arrangements — 3 to 5 pendants aligned above a double-sink vanity. Each pendant at a different height for a dynamic effect.
Tip: in the bathroom, the ideal color temperature is between 3000K and 4000K. Too warm (2700K) distorts colors in the mirror. Too cold (5000K+) creates a clinical effect.
Black bathroom chandelier: contrast and elegance
A black bathroom chandelier provides a striking contrast in a room that is generally light-colored (white tile, mirrors, ceramics). Matte black is the most popular: it absorbs distracting reflections and gives the light fixture a strong presence without overwhelming the space.
Three combinations that work particularly well:
- Black + white marble — the most luxurious duo, inspired by high-end hotels.
- Black + light wood — Scandinavian-industrial atmosphere, warmth, and character.
- Black + brushed brass — refined Art Deco touch, gold details on a black frame.
Models in black steel with transparent glass allow you to see the (Edison-style) filament bulbs — a bold aesthetic choice that turns the chandelier into a decorative object as much as a functional one.
Wooden bathroom chandelier: natural warmth and precautions
A wooden bathroom chandelier requires more attention than in other rooms. Constant humidity in a bathroom can warp or crack untreated raw wood.
Good choices:
- Teak — naturally water-resistant thanks to its internal oils. It is the gold standard for bathrooms (also used for boat decks).
- Treated bamboo — lightweight, resistant to humidity, Zen aesthetic.
- Marine-varnished wood — any wood type (oak, pine, beech) protected by a marine polyurethane varnish. Be sure to re-varnish every 2-3 years.
Poor choices: untreated rattan, raw driftwood (too porous), MDF or particleboard (swells upon contact with steam). If you love the natural look of rattan, choose a moisture-treated model or install it in a very well-ventilated bathroom.
LED bathroom chandelier: efficiency and longevity
An LED bathroom chandelier is the most rational choice for this room. Lifespan of 25,000 to 50,000 hours (10 to 20 years of daily use), 80% less consumption than halogen, and no excessive heat that could worsen condensation.
Technical criteria to check:
- Luminous flux — allow for 300 to 500 lumens per m² in the bathroom (more than in a bedroom, as you need to see yourself clearly).
- CRI (Color Rendering Index) — minimum 90 for a bathroom. A low CRI distorts skin tones and makeup colors in the mirror.
- Dimmable — a dimmer allows you to switch from functional lighting (morning) to a relaxing atmosphere (evening bath).
For a 6m² bathroom, plan for an LED chandelier of 1,800 to 3,000 lumens in total. Supplement with IP65 recessed spots above the shower if the chandelier is in an "out of zone" area.
What diameter for a bathroom chandelier?
The bathroom is often smaller than other rooms. A chandelier that is too large visually overwhelms it; one that is too small goes unnoticed.
| Bathroom Area | Chandelier Diameter | Recommended Type |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 4m² | 20 – 30 cm | Compact ceiling light or small pendant |
| 4 – 8 m² | 30 – 45 cm | Single pendant or globe |
| 8 – 15 m² | 45 – 60 cm | Multi-arm chandelier or LED ring |
| More than 15 m² (master suite) | 60 – 80 cm | Large decorative chandelier or multi-pendant |
Ceiling height — this is the critical factor in the bathroom. With a standard 2.50m ceiling, avoid chandeliers that hang more than 30cm from the ceiling. You risk hitting your head when getting out of the shower. Opt for a flush mount or semi-flush mount for low ceilings.

Designer, vintage, or Scandinavian bathroom chandelier
The style of the chandelier should match the overall aesthetic of your bathroom. Here are the most successful combinations:
- Design / minimalist — transparent blown glass or opaline globe chandelier, slim chrome or black metal frame. Works with sleek bathrooms, large porcelain stoneware tiles, floating vanities.
- Vintage / retro — aged brass chandelier with exposed Edison bulbs. Ideal with an antique-style vanity, cement floor tiles, and a gold-framed mirror.
- Scandinavian — light wood (birch, ash) + white or matte black metal. Simple shapes, no ornaments. Fits with white, pearl gray, and natural wood.
- Luxury / hotel style — gold crystal or Murano glass chandelier. Reserved for large bathrooms (> 10m²) with a freestanding bathtub. Spectacular effect guaranteed.
Tip: in a bathroom, the chandelier is often the only hanging decorative element. It naturally draws the eye. Choose it as a centerpiece, then match your accessories (faucets, towel racks) with the same metallic finish.
Cheap vs. premium bathroom chandeliers: budget guide
| Range | Price | Materials | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry level | €30 – €100 | Painted metal, basic glass, plastic | Rentals, secondary shower rooms |
| Mid-range | €100 – €350 | Stainless steel, frosted glass, brass | Primary residence, main bathroom |
| High-end | €350 – €750 | Blown glass, crystal, solid brass | Master suite, prestige bathroom |
At Designix, our 24 bathroom light fixtures range from €149 to €709, with the majority between €150 and €430. Each model is selected for its design and bathroom compatibility.
Don't forget to include in your budget: electrical installation (€80 to €150 by an electrician if you don't have an existing ceiling outlet) and quality LED bulbs (€15 to €30 for a 90+ CRI).
How to install a bathroom chandelier safely
Installing a light fixture in a bathroom is not a trivial DIY task. Water and electricity do not mix — here are the essential steps:
- Turn off the circuit breaker — not just the switch, but the breaker for the bathroom circuit at the electrical panel. Verify the absence of voltage with a voltage tester.
- Identify the zone — measure the distance between the mounting point on the ceiling and the nearest water source (bathtub, shower, sink). Refer to the zone table above.
- Check the IP rating — if you are in zone 1 or 2, your chandelier MUST have an IP44 rating or higher on its label.
- Connect — live (red or brown) to L, neutral (blue) to N, earth (green-yellow) to the earth terminal. In a bathroom, equipotential bonding is mandatory.
- Test — switch the circuit breaker back on, check that the chandelier works and that the 30 mA residual current device does not trip.
When should you call an electrician? If you do not have an existing ceiling outlet (no DCL box), if your electrical installation is over 30 years old, or if you need to install the chandelier in zone 1. A qualified electrician charges between €80 and €150 for this service, including diagnostics.
Maintaining a chandelier in a damp environment
Water vapor, limescale, and soap residue accumulate faster on bathroom lighting than in any other room. Regular maintenance preserves the shine and safety of the chandelier.
- Glass and crystal — clean every 2 weeks with a water and white vinegar mixture (50/50). Dry immediately to avoid limescale stains.
- Chrome or stainless steel metal — use a damp microfiber cloth; do not use abrasive products. Chrome is moisture-resistant, but limescale will dull it if not wiped away.
- Brass — brass develops a natural patina. If you like the aged look, leave it as is. Otherwise, a special brass polish once a month is sufficient.
- Wood — check the condition of the marine varnish once a year. If water still beads on it, it's fine. If it absorbs, re-varnish quickly.
Remember to ventilate your bathroom properly (mechanical ventilation or open a window after every shower). Less residual humidity = less cleaning and longer life for your chandelier.
One final tip: after cleaning the chandelier, turn it on for a few minutes. The heat from operation (even slight for LED) helps evaporate any remaining moisture and prevents limescale from drying on the surface. This simple step significantly extends the shine of the glass and chrome surfaces.

Frequently asked questions about bathroom chandeliers
Can you put a chandelier in a bathroom?
Yes, provided you respect the NF C 15-100 safety zones. In areas outside of volumes (more than 60 cm from a water source), any type of chandelier is allowed. In zone 2, an IP44 rating minimum is required. In zone 1 (above the bathtub/shower), only IP44+ ceiling lights are permitted.
What IP rating for a bathroom chandelier?
IP44 is the minimum required in zone 2 (within 60 cm of a water source). Outside of volume areas, IP20 (standard) is sufficient. For installation above an open shower, prefer IP65. The first digit indicates dust protection, the second indicates water protection.
What light output for a bathroom?
Count on 300 to 500 lumens per square meter. For a 6 m² bathroom, plan for 1,800 to 3,000 lumens total. Choose a CRI (Color Rendering Index) of 90 or higher for faithful color reproduction in the mirror.
Is a wooden chandelier suitable for a bathroom?
Yes, if the wood is treated against humidity. Teak, treated bamboo, and any wood varnished with marine polyurethane resist well. Avoid untreated raw wood, unprotected rattan, and MDF, which swells upon contact with moisture. Ventilation is mandatory after every shower to limit condensation.
How do I clean a limescale-covered bathroom chandelier?
Mix water and white vinegar in equal parts, spray onto the glass or metal, let sit for 5 minutes, then wipe with a dry microfiber cloth. For stubborn limescale, add a few drops of lemon. Avoid abrasive products that scratch glass and chrome.
Chandelier or flush mount in a bathroom: what to choose?
A flush mount light is safer for low ceilings (less than 2.50 m) and small bathrooms. A hanging chandelier is reserved for spacious bathrooms with a ceiling height of 2.60 m or more, and provided it is located in an area outside of volumes or in zone 2 with an IP44 rating.
Do I need an electrician to install a bathroom chandelier?
If you already have a ceiling outlet (DCL box) in an area outside of volume, the installation is similar to that of a classic chandelier. However, if you need to create a new light point, if the installation is in zone 1 or 2, or if your electrical panel is old, call a qualified electrician (€80 to €150 per service call).
What color temperature for bathroom lighting?
Between 3000K and 4000K (neutral white to warm white). Below 3000K, the light is too yellow and distorts colors in the mirror. Above 5000K, the lighting becomes clinical and unflattering. Ideal for makeup and shaving: 4000K with a CRI of 90 or higher.
