Modern crystal pendant light: how to choose it, hang it and light it

Measure the distance between your ceiling and the tabletop: that is what decides the size, not the catalogue photo. Allow 75 to 85 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture, a ring at 2,700 K, and a diameter close to half the width of the table.

A modern crystal pendant comes down to three things: the quality of the glass, the finesse of the metal frame and the quality of the light. Everything else, diameter, drop, finish, is settled with a tape measure. Our designer lighting is chosen the same way, starting from the room and how it is used.

What is the difference between a modern crystal pendant and a crystal drop chandelier?

A modern crystal pendant hangs from a graphic frame (ring, cylinder, bar) holding aligned blocks of crystal. A drop chandelier, by contrast, hangs clusters of drops from a central frame. The first draws a clean line above a table, the second fills the space and becomes the focal point.

Three ways to hang modern crystal

Crystal LED ring Drop pendant Linear crystal pendant
Silhouette Circle or slim ring, graphic frame Clusters of cut drops, vertical volume Bar or rail, crystal spread along the length
Room where it works Living room, hallway, stairwell Dining room, bedroom, classic interior Dining room, open kitchen, island
Mounting height At least 2.10 m from the floor if people walk underneath 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop, aligned on the axis
Light Integrated LED, 2,700 to 3,000 K G9 or E14 bulbs, 2,700 K Integrated LED or linear sockets, 2,700 to 3,000 K
Dimming Useful in the evening Essential for a dinner Useful if the room also serves as an office
Maintenance A microfibre cloth on the ring, few nooks One drop at a time, demineralised water Large flat surface, easy to reach
Watch out for Check the weight of the frame before drilling Dust collects: plan stable access The length must stay shorter than the table

A classic chandelier keeps its place under a ceiling of 3 m and above, in a room where it has space around it. Below that, the central frame hangs too low and blocks the view of the guests.

To settle a specific case, the difference between a chandelier and a pendant often comes down to the fixing: a rigid rod on one side, an adjustable cable on the other.

Cut crystal or glass: how can you tell?

Cut crystal reflects light through its edges, moulded glass diffuses it. The difference is visible to the naked eye, no gemmology diploma required.

  • Weight: cut crystal feels heavier in the hand than moulded glass of the same size.
  • Edges: sharp and regular on cut crystal, rounded on moulded glass.
  • Tint: a slight grey haze betrays ordinary glass, crystal stays clear.
  • The spec sheet: it must name the material, not just say "crystal effect".

Our crystal lighting details these materials sheet by sheet, which avoids unpleasant surprises on delivery.

What an LED ring changes

An LED ring replaces the dozens of bulbs of an old chandelier. The light is more even, maintenance is limited to one fixture, and the light no longer flickers above the plates. It does, however, impose a colour temperature chosen at purchase.

  • 2,700 K: warm white, the mood of a dinner in the evening.
  • 3,000 K: a notch crisper, comfortable above a desk.
  • Dimming: real comfort, from the meal to the late evening.
  • Socket: G9 or E14 when the bulbs remain visible, integrated LED elsewhere.

An LED chandelier is therefore chosen for its light curve as much as its silhouette.

How do you choose a crystal pendant for each room?

You choose the volume first, then the design. A 25 m² living room takes a diameter of 50 to 60 cm, a dining room for six needs only 40 cm. The table sets the diameter, the ceiling sets the drop, the room sets the finish.

Which modern chandelier for a living room?

In a living room, the pendant is seen from a seated position. It must remain readable from the sofa without dazzling, and fill the space above the seating area.

  • Diameter: half the width of the area to be lit.
  • Clearance: 2.10 m minimum from the floor under the fixture.
  • Finish: a gold chandelier warms a light interior, black steel suits a graphic decor.
  • Bedroom: a bedroom chandelier stays small, 30 to 40 cm, so as not to overpower the bed.

A living room pendant hung above a coffee table also works, provided the drop is raised so as not to get in the way.

Modern chandelier for a dining room

Above a table, the pendant lights faces and a tabletop. The crystal must hang low enough for that, without ever becoming an obstacle when people stand up.

  • Width: at least a third of the table length.
  • Shape: linear over a rectangular table, ring over a round table.
  • Socket: E14 or G9, to change a bulb without dismantling the crystals.
  • Harmony: same metal as the taps or furniture handles, that is what holds the room together.

Hallway and stairwell

In a hallway, a short pendant replaces the long drop. The aim is not to make people duck, and to light a wall rather than a floor.

  • Drop: 30 cm maximum below the ceiling in a passageway.
  • Staircase: the pendant follows the stairwell opening, never the landing.
  • Clearance: 10 cm on each side of the opening.
  • Maintenance: above a passageway, crystal needs dusting often.

At what height should a crystal pendant be hung above a table?

Allow 75 to 85 cm between the tabletop and the lowest point of the fixture. Above a kitchen island, go down to 85 to 90 cm. These markers take into account the height of the guests and the passing of dishes: any higher, and the light falls too far from the plates.

Height above the tabletop

Support Recommended drop Indicative diameter
Table for 4 to 6 75 to 85 cm 40 to 50 cm
Table for 8 80 to 85 cm 60 cm
Round table 75 to 80 cm half the width
Kitchen island 85 to 90 cm 30 to 40 cm

A dining room chandelier that is too wide for the tabletop overpowers the table, even hung at the right height.

Drop according to ceiling height

Below 2.50 m, the margin shrinks quickly. The right drop is calculated by subtraction, never by feel.

  • 2.50 m: short pendant, 60 to 70 cm drop.
  • 2.80 m: 75 to 85 cm, the most comfortable zone.
  • 3.00 m and above: adjustable cable or high-ceiling pendant.
  • Coffee table: 1.90 m minimum between the floor and the bottom of the fixture.

Customer reviews often come back to this point: it is the drop, not the diameter, that disappoints when a model is mounted too high.

How much does a crystal pendant cost and what drives the price?

There is no single price: four items make up the bill. The crystal (cut or moulded), the frame (solid brass or folded sheet steel), the technology (integrated LED or replaceable bulbs) and the diameter. Two visually similar models can show significant differences.

The items that make up the bill

  • The crystal: cut blocks, glass drops or glued pieces, three cost levels.
  • The frame: solid brass, powder-coated steel, aluminium, the weight is felt in the pendant.
  • The light: integrated LED ring or replaceable G9 and E14 sockets.
  • The warranty: two years as standard, five years on part of the catalogue.

What the product sheet must state

A serious product sheet gives the material, the socket, the colour temperature and the dimming. Without these four lines, you are buying a photo. In a survey of 91 references in our catalogue as of 3 November 2026, 81% state an LED technology and 87% a 2-year warranty.

  • Material named, not "crystal effect".
  • Socket: E27, E14 or G9, to know what to buy again in five years.
  • Temperature: 2,700 K or 3,000 K, in black and white.
  • Dimming: yes or no, to check before fitting a dimmer.

If you are hesitating between two diameters for your room, describe it on the contact page: the answer comes with two or three specific models, not a list.

The six points to check on the product sheet before confirming

  • The total height and the adjustable cable length: the drop must be adjustable
  • The weight of the pendant and the type of ceiling fixing provided
  • The bulb socket (G9, E14) and the stated colour temperature
  • Compatibility with a dimmer if you already have one
  • The nature of the crystal: cut or moulded glass, and how the drops are attached
  • Access to the drops for cleaning, without having to dismantle the whole fixture

How do you install a crystal chandelier and make it shine?

You fix the frame to the ceiling, set the drop, then hang the crystals last. Cleaning is done dry, drop by drop, twice a year. A product that is too liquid leaves marks in the edges and dulls the sparkle.

Installation

A model spotted among this year's trending pendant lights is installed like any other: the difficulty comes from the weight, never from the style.

  • Circuit breaker off, not just the wall switch.
  • Fixing: hook or bar into the ceiling, never into plasterboard alone.
  • Drop: set before hanging the crystals, otherwise everything has to come down again.
  • Crystals: fitted last, clean gloves, one by one.

The step-by-step method is detailed in our guide on how to install a chandelier, including the wiring.

Cleaning

Crystal is cleaned without drowning it. Stagnant water in a frame leaves rings, and alcohol attacks glued pieces.

  • Dry: microfibre or cotton glove, never an abrasive sponge.
  • Warm water: a drop of mild soap, then dry immediately.
  • Alcohol: avoid on glued crystals.
  • Frequency: two passes a year are enough.

Frequently asked questions about crystal pendants

What is the difference between a chandelier and a pendant?
A chandelier is fixed to the ceiling with a frame that holds drops or arms, often in volume. A pendant is simpler: a cable, a diffuser, a light source. In modern crystal, the boundary has shifted towards rings and graphic shapes that borrow from both.
Which chandelier for a modern living room?
A crystal ring or cone, on a black or brass frame, rather than a cluster of drops. Aim for 2,700 to 3,000 K to keep the mood warm and an adjustable brightness to go from dinner to the evening.
How do you install a crystal chandelier?
First fix the frame to the ceiling, with the power off, checking the weight the fixing point can bear. Then wire it, set the drop, and only last fit the drops, one by one, so as not to break them while handling the whole.
How do you make a crystal chandelier shine?
Demineralised water and a microfibre cloth, drop by drop, without greasy products or alcohol. Limescale and fingerprints are the two enemies of crystal: dry without leaving marks and never hook the cloth onto the frame.
How much does a crystal pendant cost?
The price depends on four items: the size of the frame, the nature of the crystal, the number of drops and the quality of the metal finish. At equal size, a sheet that details these items says more than a price on its own.
