Chandelier or pendant light in the bedroom: the right light seen from the bed
This article is also available in French: Lustre suspension chambre

First measure the drop: allow 2.10 m of clear space between the floor and the bottom of the shade so you can move around without bumping into it. Then the diameter: 30 to 40 cm under 10 m², 40 to 50 cm up to 15 m². Finally the light: 2,700 K and 100 to 150 lumens per m². Three figures, and the model picks itself.
Chandelier definition: what really sets it apart from a pendant light
A chandelier is a suspended light fixture with several lights, often on arms, that diffuses upwards and downwards. A pendant light has a single source, carried by a shade or a diffuser. The first structures the room, the second accompanies it.
In a 12 m² bedroom, the nuance shows: a multi-light fixture lights widely but leaves shadow areas, while a pendant light concentrates the light at a low point. Our selection of bedroom chandeliers reads, in fact, like a catalogue of shapes to hang, not ceiling lights.
Chandelier definition synonym: the words we confuse
Chandelier, pendant light, ceiling light and pendant all refer to a fixture fixed high up, but not in the same way. A ceiling light touches the ceiling, a pendant is a common word for a hanging light. Only the chandelier and the pendant light are truly confused, because both hang down.
| Type | Fixing | Sources | Effect in the bedroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chandelier | Chain or rod | Several lights | Wide light, marked shadows |
| Pendant light | Cable and ceiling rose | One source | Sharp point of light |
| Ceiling light | Flush to the ceiling | One or more | Even lighting, little relief |
One detail often decides: the ceiling rose. The wider it is, the heavier the fixture, and the more the ceiling has to hold. Our article on telling a chandelier apart from a pendant light covers the four criteria.
The chandelier collection shows what a real multi-light fixture looks like, useful before comparing prices per square metre.
Non-electrified pendant: definition and pitfall to avoid
A non-electrified pendant has no socket and no wiring: it dresses an existing light point, as a cable cover or a decorative volume. The pitfall is to believe it is self-sufficient. It does not replace the fixture, it attaches to it, and requires three checks.
- Ceiling rose diameter: it must cover the cable outlet, otherwise the cut-out stays visible.
- Carried weight: a metal cable cover adds load to the existing hook.
- Final height: the assembly hangs lower than a simple fixture.
- Original socket: E27 or G9 depending on the model, it does not change.
How many lumens for a bedroom, and where to place the light?
Allow 100 to 150 lumens per m² for general lighting, at 2,700 K. A 12 m² bedroom is therefore satisfied with 1,200 to 1,800 lumens on the ceiling, supplemented by two low points near the bed. The ceiling alone is not enough for reading.
- 100 lumens/m²: accent lighting, guest bedroom.
- 130 lumens/m²: the comfortable compromise for sleeping.
- 150 lumens/m²: bedroom used as an office during the day.
A living room is set at 150 lumens per m², a hallway at 80: the bedroom is the room where you go the lowest. The surface calculation is detailed in our guide on how many lumens for a bedroom.
How many spotlights in a bedroom?
Four to six spotlights are enough in 12 to 15 m², aligned in two rows parallel to the bed rather than in a circle. A 6 to 7 W LED spotlight covers about 2 m². Beyond eight, the ceiling becomes a sheet of light and the room loses its relief.
The layout depends on the position of the bed: our article on the bedroom pendant light details the three possible scenarios.
Attic bedroom: how to light without hanging low
As soon as the slope drops below 2.20 m, the pendant light becomes an obstacle. A flush ceiling light or an adjustable wall light takes over, fixed on the highest wall and tilted downwards. The light follows the slope instead of hitting it.
Our selection of bedroom ceiling lights contains the flat models that fit under a slope without cutting the ceiling.
What diameter and height for a bedroom pendant light?
A diameter of 30 to 40 cm suits up to 10 m², 40 to 50 cm up to 15 m², 55 cm and more beyond. Leave 2.10 m clear between the floor and the bottom of the shade, and 75 to 90 cm between the shade and the surface of the bedside table.
Adult bedroom chandelier: the diameter that does not eat up the room
The diameter can also be calculated: add length and width in metres, multiply by 10, and you get an order of magnitude in centimetres. A bedroom of 3.5 by 4 m gives 75 cm, a value to reduce as soon as the ceiling drops below 2.50 m.
- Under 10 m²: 30 to 40 cm, two to three lights maximum.
- 10 to 15 m²: 40 to 50 cm, the most common format.
- Over 15 m²: 55 cm and beyond, with a solid suspended mounting.
- Low ceiling: prefer a flat model, even if it means going down in diameter.
A single fixture does not settle everything: bedside, wall light and ceiling are balanced together. That is the principle of a bedroom lighting project carried out room by room.
Height-adjustable pendant light: set the drop once and for all
A height-adjustable pendant is set during installation, then left alone. Measure from the finished floor to the bottom of the shade, cut the cable keeping 10 cm of safety, lock the cable clamp. The reference is taken from the finished ceiling, never before.
Our article on the height-adjustable pendant light gives the dimensions by type of room. The real result, however, is hard to check on a technical sheet: buyer feedback can be consulted on our Google listing, with no rating copied here.
If two diameters are still hesitating, send us the measurements of your bedroom and the ceiling height: we answer on the model that holds, not the one that looks good in a photo. Simply describe your bedroom to us in three lines.
Bedroom chandeliers and pendant lights to discover
What light for sleeping: colour temperature and bulb?
Aim for 2,700 K, a warm white leaning towards amber, and 800 to 1,000 lumens for a central point. Above 4,000 K, white light slows falling asleep. A dimmer adjusts the intensity in the evening without touching the hue.
The source weighs more than the fixture: the same shape goes from cocoon to neon depending on the bulb. That is why the fixture is chosen after setting its colour temperature, never before.
Which LED to choose for a bedroom?
An 8 W LED at 2,700 K is enough for an accent point, 12 to 15 W for a 12 m² ceiling. The base decides the rest. On a survey of 163 listings in our catalogue as of 3 November 2026, the E27 base accounts for 50% of listings, G9 for 14%, GU10 for 9%, and only 38% state dimmability.
- E27: the most widespread, easy replacement, up to 15 W.
- G9: small pin base, reserved for compact multi-light fixtures.
- GU10: adjustable spotlight, practical above a headboard.
- IP20: sufficient in a bedroom, this rating covers 98% of the survey.
Our selection of bedroom bulbs covers the three bases without mixing hues.
How to add LEDs to your bedroom without wiring the ceiling
Three solutions avoid touching the wiring: a wall light plugged into a socket, a rechargeable bedside lamp, a battery-powered string light. All can be installed without a drill or a circuit breaker, and move when the room is reorganised.
Our selection of bedside lamps contains the cordless models that hold the reading angle.
A well-lit bedroom combines three levels: ceiling, bedside, ambience. Our article on the bedroom light fixture explains how to balance them from general to accent.
