Living room floor lamp: the right height, the right light
This article is also available in French: Lampadaire séjour

Measure the seat height of your sofa and the reach of the floor lamp's arm. A living room floor lamp is chosen on these two dimensions: the shade comes down to shoulder height for a seated person, and the reach extends beyond the edge of the seat. Without that overhang, the light falls behind the shoulder and the page stays in shadow.
What height for a living room floor lamp?
Allow 150 to 170 cm of total height, with the lower edge of the shade between 90 and 110 cm from the floor. That is the range that lights a seated person without dazzling them. Lower, the source hits the face. Higher, it no longer reaches the book and the light goes onto the wall.
At what height should a floor lamp be placed relative to the sofa?
Aim for 15 to 20 cm above the backrest for the bottom of the shade, and a reach that extends at least 30 cm over the seat. The living room floor lamp collection should be read with these two dimensions in hand, not with the photo.
- Reach: 30 cm minimum above the seat, otherwise the light stays behind your back
- Shade height: 90 to 110 cm from the floor for a standard seat
- Shade diameter: 35 to 45 cm, beyond that it eats into the field of view
- Stability: a slim stem must be heavy enough not to move when you walk past
The stem is therefore chosen before the shape. A floor lamp with a straight 150 cm stem covers most living rooms under a 2.60 m ceiling, and an adjustable model lets you fine-tune once the sofa is delivered.
What height for a reading corner, and for a large living room?
A reading armchair calls for a source 100 or 120 cm from the floor, adjustable, so you can hold the book underneath without lowering your head. In a living room of more than 40 m² with a 3 m ceiling, a large model of 180 to 200 cm holds the room without looking spindly.
The 200 cm floor lamp is not a showroom choice: it brings the source closer to the seated gaze and avoids that pool of light stuck to the floor that leaves the upper part of the room dark. Our guide to floor lamp height details the dimensions room by room.
Living room floor lamps: the Designix selection
Arc, reading lamp, tripod, column: which floor lamp for which use in the living room?
The arc hangs over a seat without a foot in the walkway. The reading lamp targets an armchair and adjusts to the centimetre. The tripod dresses an empty corner. The column lights broadly and sits against a wall. Four uses, four floor footprints, and only one to pick per zone.
The arc floor lamp, when the reach does everything
An arc is judged on its reach, not its silhouette. A 100 cm arm above a sofa 90 cm deep places the source in the right spot. A 60 cm arm leaves it set back and lights only empty space.
The arc floor lamp truly comes into its own from 25 m², when the clearance allows you to walk behind the base. Below that, the base becomes an obstacle.
The counterweight matters as much as the arm: a 180 cm arc on a marble base will not tip, a hollow lightweight metal foot will. Arched models are first compared on base weight and actual reach.
Reading lamp, tripod, column: three constraints, three shapes
The reading lamp is judged on its joint. The tripod on its mobility. The column on its diffusion height. A table beats a long paragraph.
| Shape | What it solves | The pitfall |
|---|---|---|
| Arc | Hang over a seat without a foot in the walkway | Reach too short, source set back |
| Reading lamp | Light a page or a book, adjustable source | Arm that does not come down low enough |
| Tripod | Dress a corner, move from room to room | Shade too low, direct glare |
| Column | Broad upward lighting, halo on the wall | Fixed source, no adjustment possible |
A reading floor lamp with an articulated arm solves the question in one go: the source comes down, the shade pivots, the seat stays clear. The rest of the living room works with separate general lighting, often a living room ceiling light in indirect light. The floor lamp completes, it does not replace.
Which use do you want to cover first in your living room?
How to choose your living room floor lamp without getting it wrong?
Decide the use, then the socket, the colour last. This order avoids most disappointments: a model chosen for its line, whose bulb cannot be found or whose white light ruins the living room in the evening. Three questions in this order and the choice narrows itself.
Which socket and which bulb for a living room floor lamp?
The E27 socket accepts filament bulbs as well as LEDs, and is available everywhere. Colour temperature matters more than wattage: 2700 K for a living room, 3000 K only above a worktop.
- E27: the most widespread, easy dimming, simple replacement
- E14: small shades, narrower bulb choice
- GU10: directional source, suited to an adjustable arm
- 2700 K: the warm light that carries a living room all evening
- Dimmer: worth having if you read and entertain in the same room
The E27 socket remains the easiest to restock: E27 bulbs come in filament, LED and dimmable versions, which keeps your options open after purchase. Wattage should be thought of in lumens, and our guide on how many lumens for a living room gives the order of magnitude per surface area.
Colour and material: what stays lit in the evening
A black or gold shade cuts a sharp cone and marks the corner. White and beige diffuse more softly and forgive small living rooms. Metal structures the room, but fabric softens it when the room is already busy.
Black floor lamps suit light interiors and white walls, where the silhouette does the work. On a dark wall, they disappear by day and only exist when switched on.
Once the colour is set, the essential lies in the rendering: an ambient design floor lamp is judged on the light it leaves on the wall, not on its reflection in a shop. Finally, it is better to mix lighting styles around a shared material than to make everything uniform.

What 2,496 living room floor lamp references say about the market
Our Living room floor lamp collection contains 2,496 references as of 1 November 2026. From a survey of 179 of these listings on the same date, 61% declare an E27 socket, 75% metal and 34% a tube shape. The typical living room lamp is therefore E27, metal, tube, and black.
What the survey of 179 listings shows
| Declared feature | Share of the survey | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| E27 socket | 61% | The bulb can be replaced without hunting for a rare model |
| Metal material | 75% | Stable stem, easy care, cool rendering to correct with light |
| Tube then round shape | 34% and 18% | Two families cover half the catalogue |
| IP20 rating | 95% | Dry interior only, no outdoor use |
| Freestanding assembly | 77% | No drilling, no ceiling connection |
| 2-year warranty | 73% | The standard duration, a few models go further |
These shares cover the 179 listings surveyed, not the 2,496 references in the collection, and one listing may declare several features. One solid conclusion: with 95% IP20, the living room floor lamp remains an object for dry interiors.
What these listings do not say
No listing indicates whether you will like the light at 9 pm. Declarations cover features, never the rendering: perceived colour depends on the bulb, the wall and the distance. That is the limit of the survey, and it is better to know it before ordering from a photo.
For the rest, the establishment's Google listing is the only public proof that can be checked in one click and stays true a year later: Designix's Google listing shows its reviews up to date.
If the whole living room needs rethinking, a lighting project for a living room should be planned in layers: general, accent, reading. The floor lamp is only the last, the one that makes the room liveable in the evening.
