Wood kitchen light: the right pendant, in the right place
This article is also available in French: Luminaire bois cuisine

Hang the wood light 75 to 85 cm above the island and aim for 2700 to 3000 K, the range where wood stays warm instead of turning grey. For an island of 1.80 m to 2 m, a diameter of 40 to 50 cm is enough. Higher up, the light falls behind your back; lower down, it glares.
Which wood light should you choose for a kitchen?
Wood is chosen by zone, not by style. A pendant above the island, a wall light near the sink, a table lamp at the end of the worktop: three pieces coexist without clashing if the light stays the same everywhere. The result depends on that consistency, not on the number of lights.
Pendant, wall light or table lamp: which fitting for which zone?
- Pendant above the island and the table, the only one that lights without casting a shadow on your hands
- Wall light near the sink, around 1.40 m from the floor, for the worktop
- Table lamp on a shelf or at the end of the worktop, for extra light in the evening
- Ceiling light reserved for kitchens without an island, elsewhere it lights the top of the fridge
From a survey of 250 references in our catalogue on 2 November 2026, pendant fittings account for 42 % and wall fittings 38 %. Hanging wood dominates, and that makes sense: it hangs where you work. When the whole kitchen is being redone, a kitchen and dining room lighting project takes shape zone by zone before any order is placed.
The easiest shapes to install remain the cylinder and the dome: they hide the bulb and do not reflect glare into your eyes. To compare shapes by room and by material, the designer lighting selection can be browsed without getting lost. Heights are set out in detail in the guide to choosing a kitchen pendant zone by zone.
Wood pendant above an island: what height, what diameter?
Allow 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the pendant and the island surface. This range lights the plate and your hands without dazzling someone standing. Under a 2.50 m ceiling, that leaves 1.65 m to 1.75 m of cable to plan for.
What height above the island and above the table?
- Island 75 to 85 cm from the surface, never less than 70 cm
- Dining table 75 to 80 cm, you can go down to 70 cm for a seated dinner
- Worktop wall light at 1.40 m from the floor, about 60 cm from the wall
An adjustable cable is better than a perfect calculation on paper: the height can be corrected in five minutes, once the island is in place. Models with a fine chain and a discreet ceiling rose are the easiest to adjust, which is what our selection of kitchen chandeliers brings together.
What diameter and how many points above an island?
- Up to 1.60 m one point of 40 to 50 cm in diameter
- From 1.80 to 2.40 m two points of 25 to 30 cm, spaced 60 to 70 cm apart
- Beyond 2.40 m three points, or two large formats closer together
The number of points changes everything in the result: two pendants offset by a metre project two distinct cones onto the surface. The balance of spacings is detailed in the guide to multiple pendants above an island.
Wood alone can seem tepid in a very mineral kitchen. A black frame or a textile cable tightens the line, as explained in the article on the pairing of wood and black pendants.
If your electrical supply is not in line with the island, or if the ceiling is sloped, there is still a clean solution to find: describing your kitchen to us takes two minutes and avoids a product return.
Does wood hold up near the hob and the sink?
Yes, with a stable species, a finish that closes the pores and a clear distance from the cooking area. Varnished oak or walnut will get through years of steam. Raw wood left bare above a hob turns grey and cracks, because it absorbs and then dries in a loop.
What steam does to wood
- Polyurethane varnish the most watertight surface, it can be wiped with a sponge
- Hard oil beautiful to the touch, to be reapplied once a year
- Raw wood to be avoided above a dishwasher or a saucepan
A properly extracting hood solves half the problem: steam rises and leaves before reaching the shade. The other half depends on the species, and a wood chandelier is chosen as much for its tone as for the way the material behaves.
What distance should you keep from the hood and the hob?
- 60 cm minimum between the bottom of the light and the hob
- Out of the hood's axis, so as not to draw in the light or the heat
- IP44 only if the light falls within the sink's splash zone
Elsewhere in the kitchen, an IP20 rating is enough: the room is dry. Installations already carried out by our customers can be read on the Designix Google listing, reviews verifiable in one click, with no rating copied here.
What light in a wood light?
2700 K warms the wood, 3000 K suits a white or dimly lit kitchen. Below 2700 K, oak turns orange. Above 3500 K, it turns grey and loses its appeal. Colour temperature matters more than the wattage printed on the packaging.
2700 K or 3000 K: what the wood reflects
- 2700 K warm wood, dining mood, ideal over an oak surface
- 3000 K a crisper result, to be preferred if the walls are white or the surface grey
- Dimmer the best option: 3000 K in the kitchen, lower at dessert
Quantity matters as much as tone: an 8 W pendant is enough for an island, three sources more for the worktop. The calculation by surface area is detailed here: how many lumens for a kitchen.
E27, GU10 or integrated LED: what does it change for maintenance?
| Fitting | What it changes | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| E27 | Replaceable bulb, visible filament possible | Anyone who wants to change the tone without changing the light |
| GU10 | Compact source, directional beam | Worktops to be lit straight on |
| Integrated LED | Nothing to replace, but a failure affects the whole light | Enclosed formats, difficult to dismantle |
In the same survey of 250 references on 2 November 2026, the E27 socket equips 26 % of the listings and integrated LED 22 %. The rest is shared between E14, GU10 and listings with no mention.
A wood light for every zone of the kitchen
Two zones are enough in a private kitchen: the worktop and the dining area. Each has its height, its wattage and its type of wood. The rest is a matter of style, and that is where people go wrong by choosing the shape first.
Above the worktop
A wall light at 1.40 m from the floor lights your hands without shadow, provided it is set back 60 cm from the wall. The wood chosen should be varnished, as this is the area most exposed to splashes. The exact dimensions are in the guide to the wall light above the sink.
Above the dining area
The lamp hangs lower, around 70 cm from the table, and the shade decides everything: solid wood concentrates the light towards the plate, openwork wood diffuses it. See the wood lamp and the wood shades to compare the two results.

The styles that last longest remain the Scandinavian cylinder and the 1950s dome. Our reading of kitchen lighting trends explains why open shapes date faster than closed ones.
Four points should be checked before confirming: the available cable length, the weight of the light relative to the ceiling fixing, the bulb socket and the presence of a compatible dimmer.
