Connecting a ceiling light: wires, DCL, and safety

Cut the power at the circuit breaker, check for the absence of voltage with a voltage tester screwdriver, then connect the brown wire (live) to terminal L, the blue (neutral) to N, and the green-yellow to the earth. Attach the light fixture to the DCL box or hook, screw the cover back on, and restore the power.

A ceiling is not wired the same way depending on its age. Newer homes feature a standardized DCL box, while older ones have a simple wire outlet. Identifying yours determines both the mounting and the wiring.

Weight and the hanging system are just as important as the wires: a heavy ceiling lamp requires a solid fixing point, not just a DCL plug designed for small models.

How to connect a ceiling lamp?

First, identify your ceiling outlet. On a DCL box, a three-pin plug clips in and the bulb is screwed on; on a bare wire outlet, strip the conductors and connect them using push-in wire connectors. Always cut the power at the circuit breaker and check for the absence of voltage before handling anything.

Recent DCL box or old wire outlet: how to recognize them

DCL box (recent installation) Old wire outlet
What it looks like Round plastic base with connection plug Bare wires coming directly out of the ceiling
Wires present Live, neutral, and earth usually Live and neutral, earth sometimes absent
Mounting the fixture Built-in hook or bracket Hook or anchor to be provided yourself
Connection Clip-on plug, tool-free Wago connectors or screw-in terminal blocks
Earth Dedicated terminal on the base To be checked, essential if the fixture is metallic

Two minutes of preparation prevent half of all mistakes. Our guide on installing a light fixture safely lists the useful tools: voltage tester screwdriver, wire strippers, and wire connectors.

Recognizing a DCL box

A DCL box features a round three-hole socket and a plastic support molded into the ceiling. The fixture's plug clips into it without tools. It is the standard for construction carried out in the last ten years.

Identifying a wire outlet without a DCL

Without a DCL, two or three wires emerge bare from the ceiling. You connect them directly to the fixture's wires using connectors. The procedure for wiring a ceiling light remains the same, only the connection changes.

Installing on a hook or bracket

A heavy fixture hangs from an anchor hook or a metal bracket screwed into the support. The recent DCL box often includes this hook, sized for only a few kilograms.

For an older room without an anchor point, it is better to know how to hang a chandelier from the ceiling with an anchor suitable for the material before connecting a single wire.

Once the mounting is identified, the choice of model follows: not all fixtures fit all outlets. A broad light fixture range helps compare mounting systems, from flat ceiling lights to adjustable cable pendants.

How to wire a ceiling lamp with two wires?

With two wires, you only have a live (brown) and a neutral (blue), with no earth. Connect the brown to the live terminal of the fixture, the blue to the neutral; the order between these two does not matter. This applies primarily to double-insulated plastic fixtures, which do not require grounding.

The case without earth

Many plastic ceiling lights only have two terminals, live and neutral, as their double insulation removes the need for an earth. The principle also applies to connecting an integrated LED, powered by the same two conductors.

When earth is mandatory

As soon as a fixture has an accessible metal frame, the earth becomes mandatory. If the ceiling only offers two wires without green-yellow, choose a Class II, insulated model, rather than compromising on safety.

Wago or screw-in connectors

Wago push-in connectors clip on without screws and hold up better over time than the older screw-tightening terminal blocks. If you are unsure about a connection, our help and customer service will answer before you turn the power back on.

Before wiring: the safety checklist

  • Cut the power at the circuit breaker for the line in question
  • Check for the absence of voltage with a tester
  • Identify a DCL box or simple wire outlet
  • Identify the colors: brown (live), blue (neutral), green-yellow (earth)
  • Prepare Wago connectors or terminal blocks and an insulated screwdriver
  • Connect color by color, with no bare wire sticking out
  • Secure the fixture, restore the power, and test

Once the connection is understood, all that remains is to choose a fixture suitable for your ceiling outlet: our consultants can help you if you prefer to ask our team for advice before purchasing.

How to wire a light fixture with 3 wires?

Three wires mean live, neutral, and earth. Connect the brown to L, the blue to N, and the green-yellow to the earth symbol on the fixture. Earth becomes mandatory as soon as the lamp has accessible metal parts. A green-yellow wire left disconnected on a metal support is the primary cause of circuit tripping.

Brown, blue, green-yellow: what each wire corresponds to

The brown carries the live, the active current. The blue is the neutral. The green-yellow, always two-toned, is exclusively reserved for the earth and never carries current under normal operation.

Where does the brown wire connect?

The brown wire connects to the L terminal of the fixture, the live one. In a setup controlling several points, knowing how to distribute several lamps on one switch avoids swapping live and neutral from one point to another.

Errors that cause circuit tripping

Swapping the live and earth, or letting two bare wires touch, causes a short circuit as soon as power is restored. A green-yellow wire forgotten on a metal support will trip the residual-current device.

When a single supply feeds several outlets, learning to wire several lamps on a single electrical supply in parallel avoids overloading a single terminal.

Which light fixture will you attach to your ceiling?

Which ceiling light fixture to choose?

Check the mounting, protection rating, and bulb base before buying. Based on a survey of 127 pendant and ceiling lights in our catalog on September 21, 2026, 84% are designed for surface mounting, 97% are IP20 rated, and the E27 base dominates, at 32% of the survey.

Mounting, protection rating, and bulb base

The Ceiling Light, Ceiling Lamp, and Ceiling Lighting collection counts 4,365 items as of September 21, 2026. Remember three key points: surface mounting for a standard outlet, IP20 in a dry room versus IP44 in a bathroom, and an E27 base for the most common bulbs.

No ceiling outlet, what to do?

Some older rooms have no light point on the ceiling, and drilling is not always possible.

In this case, it is better to light a room without a ceiling lamp by combining table lamps and floor lamps at different heights rather than cutting into the wall.

Your questions about wiring a ceiling lamp

How to connect blue and brown cables to a lamp?
The blue wire is the neutral: it connects to the fixture's N terminal (or blue wire). The brown wire is the live: it connects to the L terminal (or brown wire). Always cut the power and check for the absence of voltage before connecting.
Where does the brown wire connect?
The brown wire is the live. It connects to the L-marked terminal of the fixture, or to the lamp's brown conductor. On a DCL box, it joins the live position on the plug. Never swap it with the blue (neutral) or green-yellow (earth).
What is the meaning of electrical wire colors in light fixtures?
Brown (sometimes red or black): the live (L). Blue: the neutral (N). Green-yellow: the earth, mandatory for a metal fixture. This color convention follows French installation standards and is found on most ceiling outlets.
How to connect a lamp's wires?
Cut the power, strip each conductor slightly, then connect color by color: brown to brown/live, blue to blue/neutral, green-yellow to earth. Use Wago connectors or a terminal block; no bare wire should be exposed; then secure the lamp and test.
What are the different types of connections for light fixtures?
Distinctions include the DCL box (recent installation, with clip-on plug), the old wire outlet (direct connection via terminals), and setups on single switches or two-way switches. The number of wires (2 or 3) depends on the presence or absence of an earth.
