Bedroom: choosing the right bedside lamp
This article is also available in French: Chambre à coucher : bien choisir sa lampe de chevet

The bedside lamp, an essential element of the bedroom, can have a purely decorative function or be highly practical. It is important to determine how you will use it in order to choose the right one. Here are a few explanations.
What is a bedside lamp?
A bedside lamp is a type of table lamp, similar to desk or living room lamps. Used in the bedroom, it is generally smaller than a living room lamp, although some of the latter can serve as bedside lamps. It is a decorative fixture par excellence with a wide range available. Depending on the use—general lighting, reading, or purely decorative—the selection criteria vary. Two elements are essential: the base and the lampshade.

A bedside lamp for general lighting
For good general lighting, opt for a large lampshade that diffuses light well, ideally in a light-colored and transparent fabric. The shape of the lampshade is also important: flared or drum-style models are recommended for a mixed diffusion of light, both upward and downward. A fairly tall base also allows for better light distribution. Finally, choose models with a dimmer to adjust the light intensity according to your needs and create a soft ambiance or brighter lighting.

A bedside lamp for decorative or accent lighting
For accent or decorative lighting, give free rein to your preferences in terms of shape, color, or material. The decorative aspect takes precedence here. Choose a lamp that harmonizes with the style of your bedroom. A modular bedside lamp, with a base and lampshade chosen separately, can be a good choice. Respect the proportions for a harmonious result: the base should be visible over its entire height, the lampshade should hide the socket without hanging too low, and its width should be 1.5 to 2 times that of the base. Finally, the lampshade should not exceed the height of the base by more than 5 cm.

A bedside lamp as a reading light for functional lighting
For a bedside lamp used as a reading light, the height of the base is crucial. Choose a lamp tall enough to illuminate your book, taking into account the height of your bedside tables and your bed. Avoid lampshades that are too dark or too small. The base of the lampshade should be at eye level, between 95 and 105 cm from the floor, depending on the height of your bed. Make sure the bulb is not visible when you are sitting or lying down. Ideally, opt for a model with an adjustable or flexible base and a dimmer for added comfort, or choose articulated reading wall lamps for directional lighting.
