A wooden floor lamp is chosen on three criteria: height, 148 to 170 cm to light a sofa, up to 240 cm for an arc placed behind a sofa, the diameter of the base on the floor, and the bulb socket, most often E27. The wooden, bamboo or rattan structure holds a fabric, linen or woven shade that diffuses soft light downwards.
What is a floor lamp called?
A floor lamp is called a floor lamp, or a standing lamp. It rests on the floor on a round base, a tripod or a plinth, and holds a shade or diffuser fixed at the top of a stem. It is also called a reading lamp when it lights an armchair, and an accent lamp for a lower version, such as the Tavola model and its 160 cm.
Wooden floor lamp or wooden standing lamp?
Both terms refer to the same object, and our product pages use them interchangeably. The word floor lamp is more common for the tall version, the one that reaches 160 or 170 cm and lights upwards. The expression standing lamp also covers lower models, such as the Domeno and its 130 cm, which slip in next to a reading armchair. To explore both families, browse all our floor lamps.
The vocabulary used in store
A floor lamp is described by its base (tripod, round base, sculpted base), its stem (tube, solid wood, metal), and its top (cylindrical shade, dome shade, ball diffuser). The word arc refers to a long, curved stem that carries light above a sofa: this is the case of the Rotan arc in woven rattan, 210 to 240 cm tall. These criteria are enough to compare two models, in our entire lighting catalogue.
What are the trends for floor lamps in 2026?
Floor models most often combine light or dark wood with a black metal structure: slender tripod, tubular stem, round base. Cylindrical fabric or linen shades diffuse soft light. Woven rattan, bamboo and wicker bring a warmer feel. LED versions in warm white, sometimes with a dimmer, complete the trend.
Wood and black metal, the dominant combination
The contrast between light wood and slender metal is what gives the modern floor lamp its look. The Belis tripod floor lamp is the clearest example: three slender legs, an adjustable height from 161.5 to 164.2 cm, a dark shade. To go further in this register, look at the black wood models and the modern floor lamps for the living room.
Rattan, bamboo, wicker: the return of woven materials
Woven materials filter light and project patterns on the wall. The Lignum in tubular wood keeps it understated with a fabric shade, while the Rotan arc embraces weaving. The Kanoa in bamboo with dimmer combines a bamboo tripod and a fabric cylinder, in a Nordic spirit. See also the original lights and the design pieces for the living room.
How to choose a wooden floor lamp for the living room?
For a living room, first choose the height: between 148 and 170 cm to light a sofa or armchair, up to 240 cm for an arc placed behind a sofa. Then check the diameter of the base on the floor, the shade material and the socket, most often E27, E14 for slimmer structures.
What height to choose for a living room floor lamp?
The top of the shade should reach the shoulder level of a seated person, around 148 to 170 cm. The Trivora peaks at 148 cm, the Tribera and the Néro at 170 cm. A lower model, such as the Faustina at 148 cm with its striated glass ball, lights a corner without overwhelming the room. The base diameter matters just as much: a wide tripod stays stable on a wooden floor, a narrow base requires a very flat floor.
E27 or E14: which socket for a floor lamp?
The E27 socket accepts the widest variety of bulbs, LED or classic, and leaves brightness and colour temperature free. The small E14 socket fits narrow shades and slender structures, such as the Tavola or the Domeno. A model with an integrated LED source requires no bulb to buy, but the source is not replaceable. Compare the living room LED lights before deciding.
| Socket | Compatible bulb | What it changes | Example models |
|---|---|---|---|
| E27 | Standard screw bulb, LED or classic | The widest choice of bulbs, brightness and colour temperature free | Belis, Lignum, Rotan, Trivora, Tribera, Néro, Korvik |
| E14 | Small screw socket | Suitable for narrow shades and slender structures | Tavola, Domeno |
| Integrated LED | Not replaceable | Source included, no bulb to buy | Faustina |
What light does a wooden floor lamp give?
The light depends on the shade and the bulb. A fabric or linen shade diffuses enveloping light downwards; a woven rattan or bamboo shade filters it and projects it in patterns. LED versions announce a warm white of 2700 to 3500 K, close to indoor light in the evening.
Warm white 2700-3500 K: the atmosphere obtained
This range corresponds to a yellow-orange light, that of a filament bulb, and remains the most comfortable at the end of the day. A higher temperature leans towards neutral white and is better suited to working at a desk. For a reading corner, stay at the low end of the range; in a room where people move around, an intermediate tone works better.
What is the dimmer for in everyday life?
The dimmer allows you to lower the brightness without turning off: bright light early in the evening, lower afterwards, without getting up. It is useful in a living room that also serves as a dining room, and in a bedroom where you want a night light. The Kanoa and the Korvik are equipped with one.
Where to install a wooden floor lamp in the home?
In the living room, a model of 148 to 170 cm goes in a corner of the sofa or near an armchair. In the bedroom, a low version or one with a cylindrical shade serves as a reading lamp and an ambient lamp. In the office, dining room and kitchen, a wooden floor lamp brings additional light without drilling the wall.
In the living room, in a corner of the sofa or along a wall
The most useful location remains the angle between the sofa and the wall, within reach from the seat. An arc is placed behind the backrest and drops light above the tabletop, freeing the floor. For a living room already furnished in light wood, a high-end selection or the floor lamps for the living room give style references.
Bedroom, office, dining room: the other locations
In the bedroom, allow 130 to 164 cm and a closed shade, which sends light downwards without dazzling from the bed. In the office, an articulated arm or an adjustable shade is useful. In the dining room, an arc or a tall tripod lights the table as a complement to a pendant. In the kitchen, check the socket location and the cord length before choosing.
| Room | Useful height | Recommended base | Socket or source | To check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | 148 to 170 cm, up to 240 cm for an arc | Tripod, round base or wide plinth | E27, warm white LED | Base diameter and floor clearance |
| Bedroom | 130 to 164 cm | Round base or slender tripod | E14 or E27 | Closed shade for soft light |
| Office | 148 to 170 cm | Tripod or round base | E27 | Articulated arm or adjustable shade |
| Dining room | 140 to 240 cm | Arc or tripod | E27 | Height relative to the tabletop |
| Kitchen | About 163 cm | Stem and round base | E27 | Cord length and socket location |
How to connect several lamps to a single electrical supply?
Several lamps can share a supply if the whole remains within the circuit limits: a quality power strip or a junction box, parallel connection and a single switch. Use low-consumption bulbs and check that the cumulative power remains supported by the socket and the circuit breaker.
Power strip or junction box: which solution?
A quality power strip is enough for two or three plug-in lamps, without touching the installation. The junction box is required when the lamps are fixed and the cables must be neatly routed behind a skirting board. In both cases, the connection is made in parallel: each lamp receives the same voltage and turns on with the others.
What to avoid to stay safe
Avoid stacking power strips, running a cable under a rug, and mixing high-power bulbs on the same line. A floor lamp delivered with a cord and plug simply plugs into a socket, without modification. If you add a dimmer to an existing line, it is better to have it installed by an electrician.
How to match and maintain a wooden floor lamp?
A wooden floor lamp is matched by colour before shape: light wood with beige, white or linen, dark wood or a black finish with metal, leather or golden tones. For maintenance, a soft cloth is enough; avoid abrasive products and moisture on the wood.
Removing varnish from a wooden lamp or piece of furniture: the method
Chemical stripping remains the most effective: a wood-appropriate stripper, applied with a brush, left to act, then removed with a scraper without forcing. Then sand from the coarsest to the finest grit, dust off, then protect. Work in a ventilated room, with gloves, and test on a hidden area before treating the whole surface.
Stripping varnished wood without damaging it
The risk comes from the scraper, not the product: too sharp an angle digs grooves into the fibres. Keep the blade almost flat and change it as soon as it catches. On a thin varnish, a solvent-free stripper based on citrus or water, slower, is often enough. Once the surface is bare, an oil or wax protects without sealing the wood. The beige lights and the design lights for the bathroom give complementary colour references.
Where to find a wooden floor lamp in Lyon or online?
The Designix selection is available online: you will find the wooden floor lamps, their dimensions, their sockets and their protection rating. Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and customer service apply from Lyon as elsewhere in France, without having to look for a local store.
Lighting store in Lyon or online purchase: what changes
In a store, you see the light for real but you depend on stock and opening hours. Online, the product pages give the height, the base diameter, the material and the socket, which allows you to compare two models side by side. Searching for a lighting store in Lyon remains useful to touch a linen shade; online purchase is mainly for finding a precise dimension.
Lighting clearance: how to spot a good deal
A real lighting clearance announces a named model, its height, its material and its socket, not just a displayed discount. Check that all parts are supplied, that the warranty is stated, and that the source is either E27 compatible or integrated into the model. A product without a technical sheet is not a good deal, even at a low price. The dining room lighting, kitchen lights or outdoor floor lamps meet other uses, with the same requirements for a product sheet.
Choose the height before the style: measure from the floor to the top of the desired shade, then compare the models that fit this measurement. An assortment of pendants then completes the ceiling, and the recessed lights take over in a hallway.

Frequently asked questions
Can you eat on a wooden table without a tablecloth?
Yes, provided you protect the wood. Varnished or oiled wood withstands daily meals, but hot dishes, hot glasses and coloured liquids leave marks. Use trivets and wipe quickly; on raw wood, a tablecloth or table runner is safer.
How to strip a varnished wooden piece of furniture?
The varnish is removed with a wood-appropriate stripper, applied with a brush then left to act before being removed with a scraper. Then sand from the coarsest to the finest grit, dust off, then protect with a varnish, an oil or a wax. Work ventilated and gloved.
How to remove varnish from wood naturally?
Gentle methods rely on progressive sanding and solvent-free strippers based on citrus or water, slower but less aggressive. Sandpaper, a flexible spatula and patience will overcome a thin varnish. Always test on a hidden area before treating the whole surface.
Which bulb to put in a wooden floor lamp?
It all depends on the socket: E27 for most models, E14 for slender structures such as the Tavola or the Domeno, and an integrated LED source, not replaceable, for the Faustina. Choose a warm white bulb, between 2700 and 3500 K, to recreate the atmosphere of the LED versions.
Can a wooden floor lamp be installed in a bathroom?
Only models rated IP44 are suitable for wet areas, such as those whose base and shade withstand splashes. IP20 models, like most of the collection, remain reserved for dry rooms: living room, bedroom, office, dining room and kitchen.
