Start with the room, then the size: a small woven shade with an E14 base for a bedside or a hallway, a 400 or 500 mm circle with an E27 base above a sofa. Cannage is an open weave of rattan, bamboo or wicker stretched over a frame of metal, steel or wood: the light passes through the mesh and casts soft shadows on the wall.
Which rattan wall lights for a living room or a bedroom?
In a bedroom, a compact rattan wall light in woven rattan or bamboo, E14 or E27 base, is enough for a soft grazing light at bedside height. In a living room, you go up in size: a 400 or 500 mm circle, a curved arm, a ball, oval or leaf shade that lights without glare when you are seated.
Which wall lights for a living room?
Above a sofa or a console, a large woven circle fills the wall without weighing it down. Rotino measures 500 mm in diameter in black rattan, E27 base. Elimilica plays the same register in metal ringed with black, 400 mm. For a curved arm, Banwé extends a 50 cm shade at the end of a 115 to 145 cm arm, in steel and bamboo, with a warm white 2700-3500 K light. More options in living room wall lighting.
Which wall lights for an adult bedroom?
At bedside height, you want a grazing light and a shade that does not press against the wall. Cannisse combines rattan and metal with an E14 base. Bohéma doubles the light with two shades. Vannera stands 25 cm high, E27 base. The bedroom wall lights directory gathers the small formats, including several woven wood models for the bedroom.
Cannage, rattan, bamboo, wicker: which materials and what light effect?
Cannage is a weaving technique, not a material: rattan, bamboo and wicker make it up. The open mesh filters the light and draws shadows on the wall, while black metal, steel or brass carry the frame and set the style, bohemian, contemporary, bali or jungle.
Which wooden wall lights to dress a wall?
Warm wood and natural weaving go well together. Branok combines bamboo and metal on a black and natural wood oval. Noctiv weaves rattan around an adjustable spot. Liro mixes wicker, rattan and bamboo in a ball shape. The rest of the family is in design wood wall lights.
Which weaving colour to choose?
Black dominates, then beige, brown and gold. A black weave blends into a light wall and highlights the frame; beige and brown warm up a white interior. Dark and gold finishes add the accent: black and gold weaving, or black metal finishes for the frames.
| Model | Material | Base | Protection rating | Recommended room |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cannisse | Rattan and metal, cannage shade | E14 | IP20 | Hallway, staircase, entrance |
| Branok | Bamboo and metal, black and wood oval | E14 | IP20 | Hallway, staircase, bedroom |
| Bohéma | Rattan, metal and steel, two shades | E14 | IP20 | Bedroom |
| Rotino | Rattan, round shape | E27 | IP20 | Living room, entrance |
| Banwé | Steel and bamboo, curved arm | E27 | IP20 | Living room |
| Petrus | Woven rattan, bronze structure | E27 | IP20 | Living room, bedroom |

Which base and which bulb for a cannage wall light?
Most cannage wall lights take a screw E27 bulb, less often an E14 on small formats, a G9 on blade models, or an integrated LED module. Power ratings recorded by reference: 10 W in E14, 20 W in compact E27, 40 W on the arms. Warm white 2700-3500 K light suits weaving.
Do you need an E27 or E14 bulb?
The choice follows the size of the shade, not the style. A small woven bedside light takes an E14, like Cannisse, Branok or Bohéma. A large circle or a curved arm calls for an E27: Rotino, Elimilica, Banwé, Petrus. The E27 base models are grouped by family.
Can a cannage wall light be put on a dimmer?
A minority of models accept it. Yumé combines an articulated arm and a 90 cm reach. Bea also works with a dimmer control. The others are controlled with a compatible bulb or a wall switch. The dimmer versions directory gathers them.
| Base | Recorded power | Bulb to provide | Models concerned |
|---|---|---|---|
| E14 | 10 W | E14 screw bulb | Cannisse, Branok, Bohéma |
| E27 | 20 W | E27 screw bulb | Rotino, Elimilica |
| E27 | 40 W | E27 screw bulb | Banwé, Yumé, Petrus, Vannera, Noctiv |
| G9 | 12 W | G9 bulb | Bea |
| Integrated LED | not interchangeable | LED module supplied | Cadmira, Livtorara, Valtoreno |
| E27 | 60 W (outdoor model) | E27 screw bulb | Axella |
Which high-end design wall lights to choose?
High-end shows in the frame, the finish and the warranty, not the displayed price: load-bearing metal and steel, tight and even weaving, a shade that holds its shape, a 2-year warranty on the vast majority of models and up to 5 years on some references.
What sets a well-made wall light apart?
A metal or steel frame that does not bend, a clean ring around the mesh, brass or bronze details, and a fixing that takes the weight of the shade. Petrus combines bronze and woven rattan. Vannera holds its shade on a metal arm. In both cases, the mesh stays taut over time. To go further, see design LED wall lights.
Fixed arm or articulated arm?
A fixed arm holds the line and suits a hallway or a living room wall. An articulated arm adjusts and replaces a reading lamp: Yumé reaches 90 cm, with a Ø 30 × H 18 cm shade. Bea, with oblique brass and glass blades, takes 15 cm wide by 24 cm high, G9 base.
How to install a cannage wall light in a staircase or hallway?
In a staircase or hallway, fit the wall light at mid-height of the wall, above the step, and repeat the same model all along for a regular rhythm. An adjustable spot model like Noctiv directs light towards the descent without glare.
Where to place wall lights in a staircase?
The eye follows the line of the handrail: better several identical wall lights well aligned than a single large model. A small woven format like Cannisse or Branok, fitted at mid-height, lights each landing and brings light down along the steps. The stairwell lighting directory gathers several.
How to light a long, narrow hallway?
In a hallway, align the points on the line of the doors and keep a small format so as not to eat up the space. One wall light every two to three metres is usually enough for a domestic hallway, beam directed towards the floor. Cannisse, Branok and Vannera work in series; see also hallway wall lights.
Can a cannage wall light be installed outdoors or in a bathroom?
Yes, provided you choose a waterproof model: the IP54 wall lights in the selection, in wood or metal, are designed for the terrace and damp rooms. In IP20, you stay in bedroom, living room, hallway, staircase or entrance. Natural weaving does not cope well with direct water, so shelter it under a roof overhang.
What is the difference between IP20 and IP54?
IP20 protects against contact and dust, not water: dry rooms only. IP54 resists splashes and suits a terrace or a damp room. Axella is an outdoor model in metal, E27 base, rated at 60 W. Cadmira moves to an LED module in a wooden cage. Valtoreno does the same in wood and woven rattan. Find them in waterproof outdoor wall lights.
How to protect a woven wall light outdoors?
Choose a wall under a roof overhang, never facing driving rain or under a watering jet. The wiring stays protected and the electrical supply is placed under shelter. For a damp room, the same rules apply: see bathroom wall lighting.
Art deco and art nouveau wall lights: which cannage comes close?
Cannage is not art deco by nature: it becomes so through geometry. A 400 or 500 mm circle, an oval, a curved steel arm, a black, gold or bronze finish and symmetrical shapes recall art deco codes; scrolls and woven leaves evoke art nouveau instead.
Which 1930s art deco wall lights can still be found today?
Elimilica, a 400 mm circle ringed with black, takes up its rigour. Petrus, with a bronze structure and woven rattan, plays on symmetry. Bea, with oblique brass and glass blades, brings the gold accent. These contemporary reinterpretations cross paths in retro inspiration, to complete with vintage metal wall lights for older frames.
Where to find antique art deco wall lights?
Original pieces are sought at flea markets and antique dealers, often with electrics to redo: wiring, socket and earthing. An alternative is to take up the codes with a new model, with a metal frame and weaving, guaranteed 2 years for most. See also design gold finishes.
How to fit and maintain a cannage wall light?
Switch off the power, locate the supply cables, fix the bracket to the wall, connect then screw on the shade. For maintenance, a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner on a gentle setting: the weaving is dusted dry, without product, and the metal frame is polished with a cloth.
How to fix a wall light?
Switch off the circuit breaker, locate the wires, drill according to the support (plasterboard, concrete, wood) and fit the appropriate plug. Fix the bracket, connect live, neutral and earth, then screw on the shade and check it is level. If you are not comfortable with electrics, entrust the connection to a professional. In a hallway or staircase, adjust the height before final tightening.
How to clean a woven shade?
Dry, without water or product: feather duster, soft cloth or vacuum cleaner with a brush on the minimum setting. Rattan and bamboo dislike humidity, which loosens the mesh. The metal or brass frame is polished with a dry cloth. For bathroom models, keep the same approach, without spray.
