Plan for a three or four head rail above the area to be lit, not in the centre of the room: each woven rattan cage head sends direct light downwards, onto a worktop, a piece of furniture or a wall. The black metal structure holds the rail as a surface-mounted fitting, on the ceiling or as a wall light, with no cut-out needed.
What is a rattan spotlight and what light does it give?
A rattan spotlight is a rail where each head is surrounded by a woven rattan cage, mounted on a black metal structure. The cage surrounds the bulb and lets the light pass downwards, onto the worktop or the wall. These models are surface-mounted, on the ceiling or the wall. In the room, the effect comes from the weave: light escapes through the mesh and casts regular shadows onto the surface, like a drawing. The black metal underlines the weave instead of letting it float. Many customers write "wicker spotlights" for the same thing: the search is similar, the catalogue material is rattan. As for the specification, for the cage models the basis is: metal structure, woven rattan cage, E14 fitting, 25 W maximum per point, IP20 protection rating. These are surface-mounted spotlights, never recessed.
Rattan lamp or rattan spotlight: what is the difference?
A rattan lamp sits on a piece of furniture and lights with a single source, often as ambient light. A spotlight is fixed to the ceiling or the wall and multiplies the light points on a single support: three or four bulbs, each lighting one area. For a living room, the two complement each other, the lamp for atmosphere, the rail for practical use.
Which E14 bulb should I choose?
The fitting is E14 across the whole selection, with 25 W maximum per socket. A warm-toned LED, around 2700 K, brings out the weave and keeps a light close to filament. A bulb that is too cool, above 4000 K, bleaches the rattan and hardens the cast shadows.

How should spotlights be positioned on the ceiling?
Spotlights are placed according to what you want to light, not at random: one rail above the worktop, another along the hallway, and in the living room, against a wall or above a piece of furniture. Adjustable heads let you aim at the useful spot without moving the support. In a kitchen, there is no universal number: count one point per useful zone, preparation, sink, island, which often comes down to a single well-positioned rail. The formats in the collection are 40 cm or 70 cm, a length to compare with that of the worktop before fixing.
| Room | What is lit | Suitable format | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | worktop, island | 40 or 70 cm rail | IP20: dry room, away from water zones |
| Living room | wall, low furniture, reading corner | 4 heads for a longer run | the woven cage is visible, at eye level |
| Hallway | circulation, entrance | 40 cm | adjustable models are aimed at the wall |
Where should spotlights be placed in a living room?
Against a wall or above a low piece of furniture, rather than in the centre of the ceiling. In that position, the cage is visible from a distance and the shadows fall on the wall, which makes the room feel larger. A 70 cm rail covers the length of a piece of furniture, a 40 cm one is enough for a reading corner. See also lighting a living room.
How do you light a hallway with spotlights?
A 40 cm rail along the circulation, or at the head of the hallway, with heads aimed at the wall to avoid having the source in your eyes. Rattan filters and softens, but a bare bulb facing you is still dazzling. For this specific case, compare spacing spotlights in a hallway and LED spotlights for kitchens if the hallway continues from the kitchen.
How do you wire spotlights in series or in parallel?
In parallel, each spotlight receives the same voltage: if one bulb blows, the others keep lighting, and this is the usual arrangement for a spotlight rail. In series, one failed bulb cuts the whole line. The connection is made with the power off, on the existing supply cable, with a connector block or terminal strip. On a rail, the sockets are already linked to each other by the support: you only connect one supply point. Switch off the main circuit breaker before opening the terminal block, check that there is no voltage, and identify live, neutral and earth before dismantling anything.
How do you wire spotlights in series?
Each spotlight is connected to the next, the voltage is shared and one blown bulb cuts the whole line. This arrangement is reserved for special cases, never for lighting a living room where a single failure would leave the kitchen or hallway in the dark.
Can several rails be controlled by a single switch?
Yes, by wiring them in parallel on the same supply circuit. Two rails above the same worktop then come on together. If you want to adjust the intensity, look at the dimmable spotlights and check bulb compatibility.
How do you install recessed ceiling spotlights?
A recessed spotlight sits in a cut-out in the ceiling: you need sufficient depth, a cut-out matching the diameter of the fitting and a 220 V connection with the power off. The rattan spotlights in this collection are surface-mounted: they are screwed to the ceiling or the wall, with no cut-out. That is what makes them suitable for a concrete ceiling, for renovation, or in a rented home where you do not want to cut into a plasterboard panel. The rattan cage then holds the bulb away from the support and makes the fixing visible, which is part of the effect.
Recessed or surface-mounted spotlight: which to choose?
Recessed disappears into the ceiling and suits technical ceilings, surface-mounted is installed without work and can be removed. If you want to make the source disappear, look at the recessed version for the living room or the recessed kitchen spotlights.
How do you fix a spotlight rail to the ceiling?
Hold the mounting bracket against the ceiling or the wall, mark the holes, screw it in, then connect the supply. The rail is then placed on its bracket. Two people are more comfortable on a 70 cm model.
Which colour goes well with rattan?
Rattan goes with natural tones, light wood, linen or sage green, and with black, which underlines its weave. On a light wall, a black rattan spotlight creates a clear contrast; on a dark wall, it blends in and lets the cage draw the light. A light colour softens the whole. The entire collection is black, which settles the question of contrast but not that of the wall: an off-white or beige wall gives the best contrast with the metal, an anthracite wall makes the rail almost graphic.
Black or white rattan spotlight: what effect?
Black draws the weave and marks the ceiling, white stays discreet and blends into a light surface. Neither is more "right": it is up to you to decide whether you want to see the rail or only its light. For the other option, compare the white spotlights with the black spotlights.
Which decorating style works with a boho spotlight?
Wood, linen, matte ceramic, plants and sand or green tones. The woven cage belongs to this family of materials, and the black metal keeps it from falling into pastel. The spotlights with a crafted design and the modern spotlights show other ways of holding a bulb.
Is rattan sensitive to water?
Rattan is a woven plant material: prolonged moisture relaxes the fibre and can stain it. These spotlights are rated IP20, which makes them suitable for dry rooms and indoor use. In a bathroom or under a covered terrace, it is better to choose another model. The IP20 rating means protected against contact and solid objects, not against water: no splashing, even light, is provided for. Kitchen, living room and hallway remain within scope, provided the rail is kept away from the sink and cooking zones where steam rises.
What does an IP20 protection rating mean?
The first digit concerns solids, the second liquids. With IP20, the fitting is protected against solid objects and finger contact, and has no protection against water. It is a dry indoor rating, common for a ceiling light in a living room.
Where should a rattan spotlight not be installed?
Bathroom, outdoors, damp basement, and more broadly any room where the air stays humid. Rattan relaxes, warps, and the metal fixing can mark. On a terrace, choose a model designed for outdoor use from the black LED spotlights.
Three or four heads: which spotlight rail should I choose?
Three or four heads change the length of the rail and the area covered: the 40 cm versions suit a hallway or a small kitchen, the 70 cm ones a wide worktop. The heads of the Esra are adjustable one by one, to aim at each useful zone. First measure the available length above the worktop or the furniture, then choose: a rail that is too long extends beyond the run and lights empty space. The difference between the models also lies in the height of the cage, from 16.5 cm to 19.5 cm, which matters if the rail is placed under a beam or in front of a door.
| Model | Heads | Dimensions | Fitting and power | Style |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Malik Noir | 4 | L 70 cm, H 16.5 cm | E14, 25 W max | Boho |
| Malik | 3 | L 13 cm, D 40 cm, H 16.5 cm | E14, 25 W max | Boho |
| Java Noir | 4 | D 70 cm, H 19.5 cm | E14, 25 W max | Boho |
| Esra Noir | 3, adjustable | L 8.5 cm, D 40 cm | E14, 25 W max | Boho |
| Esra L 70 cm | 4, adjustable | L 8.5 cm, D 70 cm | E14, 25 W max | Boho |
Three or four heads: how to choose?
40 cm for a hallway or a small kitchen, 70 cm for a longer run. The three-spot Malik version fits on a small worktop, while the Malik with four cages covers twice the length. The Java model features a taller cage.
Which rail length should I choose, 40 or 70 cm?
Measure the space above the worktop before ordering. If your heads need to be aimed at separate zones, take an adjustable version: the Esra three heads or the 70 cm Esra rail. Other rails with adjustable heads and black adjustable spotlights complete the comparison.
How do you order with confidence?
Every rattan spotlight in the collection is guaranteed for 2 years, with secure payment, tracked delivery and returns, plus the Designix customer service to check a format or a fitting before ordering. The choice is made first by the room to be lit, then by the rail length. Check three things: the available length on the ceiling, the E14 fitting of your bulbs, and the absence of moisture in the room. If you are hesitating between two formats, compare the black LED spotlights, the black recessed spotlights and the Designix lighting catalogue before confirming your basket.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between wicker and rattan?
Wicker is a flexible willow branch, rattan a stiffer vine, woven here into a cage around each bulb. Rattan bends without breaking and holds its shape, which explains its use for the cages of rattan spotlights and for lampshades.
Can rattan be painted?
Rattan can be painted, provided you remove the cage from its metal support and dust the fibre before applying a thin coat, without clogging the weave. On these spotlights, the black of the structure and the rattan are designed together: repainting changes the match.
What are the different types of spotlight?
A distinction is made between the recessed spotlight, set into a cut-out in the ceiling, the surface-mounted spotlight, screwed on the surface, and the rail of several heads on a single support. The spotlights in this collection are surface-mounted rails with an E14 fitting, to be fixed to the ceiling or the wall.
Can rattan stay outdoors?
No, these spotlights are not designed for outdoor use: they are rated IP20, so protected against contact and solid objects, not against rain. Even under a canopy, moisture eventually relaxes the woven rattan.
How do you care for rattan?
A feather duster or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush is enough to dust the cage; if there is a stain, a barely damp cloth then immediate drying. Avoid abrasive products and standing water, and switch off the power before handling the E14 bulb. Checking the tightness of the fixing once a year costs nothing.
