Leave 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the pendant and a tabletop, and 2.10 m of clearance in a walkway: that is the range that sets the hanging height. The outdoor rattan hanging lights in this collection are woven balls measuring Ø 40.5 cm and H 43.3 cm, on a steel frame with a glass piece, rated IP44, with an E27 socket and 60 W maximum. The weave filters the light and casts soft shadows on the walls.
What is an outdoor rattan hanging light?
It is a pendant whose shade is made of woven rattan, mounted on a steel frame with a glass piece. The weave filters the light and projects soft shadows on the wall, and the ball silhouette can be spotted from a distance. The models in this collection measure Ø 40.5 cm by H 43.3 cm, carry an IP44 rating, take an E27 socket and a bulb of 60 W maximum.
What sets an outdoor rattan hanging light apart from an indoor model
The weave looks similar, the protection changes. Here, the rattan is mounted on a steel frame, the socket is dressed with a glass piece and the whole unit is protected to IP44 against water spray. That is what allows installation under a covered terrace, where an indoor shade would eventually mark. To compare the families, browse our range of lights.
Where to hang it outside
A sheltered terrace, a porch, a covered entrance or a kitchen open to the outside are its natural settings. The Lindendale bronze woven rattan ball pendant warms a stone facade, while the white version of the Lindendale brightens a dark wall.
Can rattan stay outdoors?
Yes, provided it is protected. Rattan is a supple material that fears standing water and direct sun: under a covered terrace, an awning or a porch, it holds up without a problem. The pendants in this collection carry an IP44 protection rating, suited to water spray and sheltered outdoor areas.
Under a covered terrace, an awning or a porch
It is the ideal setup: the light is outside for the light, inside for the rain. A roof, a roof overhang or a closed pergola is enough to keep driving rain away. IP44 covers spray and ambient humidity, not immersion. If your wall is heavily exposed, look instead at black metal pendants, which are less affected by sea spray.
What to avoid outdoors
Three enemies in practice: permanent direct sun, which dries out and fades the weave; water that stagnates between the strands, often after a poorly aimed automatic sprinkler; and a high-pressure washer jet. In these cases, the rattan blackens or warps. A sheltered area, a damp cloth and complete drying before switching back on are enough to keep it looking good for a long time.
Where to hang an outdoor rattan pendant?
Above a terrace table or a kitchen island, leave 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the pendant and the tabletop, to light without blocking the view. The living room, bedroom, dining room and a sheltered entrance also suit this ball format, as long as driving rain does not reach it.
| Room or area | Hanging height | What the pendant brings |
|---|---|---|
| Covered terrace | 2.10 m from the floor minimum in a walkway | Soft light above the table, without dazzling guests |
| Kitchen | 75 to 85 cm above the island or worktop | Woven rattan in front of the window, glass piece easy to wipe |
| Dining room | 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop | Centred Ø 40.5 cm ball, warm halo for meals |
| Living room | In a corner or above a coffee table | Woven shadows cast on the wall, boho mood |
| Bedroom | On either side of the bed or above the reading corner | Soft point of light on waking, without harsh glare |
| Sheltered entrance | 2.10 m from the floor minimum | Light signal visible from outside, sheltered from rain |
Pendant above a terrace table
A table for four to six people needs only a single light point, centred, 75 or 85 cm from the tabletop. The weave diffuses downwards and to the sides, which avoids the spotlight effect. For an open kitchen, rattan pendants for the kitchen are installed above the island, and models designed for the living room find their place in a corner, near an armchair.
Rattan pendant for an entrance or porch
In a walkway, raise it to 2.10 m minimum to let people pass. A pendant for an entrance marks the arrival without lighting broadly. Be careful not to confuse uses: an outdoor wall light for a terrace lights a wall, a door or a path from the vertical, whereas a pendant lights from above, over a table or a central area. For a bedroom, see the rattan pendants for the bedroom.
Which E27 bulb should you choose for an outdoor pendant?
An E27 base bulb, 60 W maximum, intended for outdoor use. For a terrace or a dining room, a warm light around 2700 K relaxes the mood; for a kitchen or a worktop, go up to 3000 to 4000 K to see clearly. An LED gives off less heat behind the glass.
Which E27 bulb for outdoors?
The useful reference is the colour temperature, expressed in kelvins: below 3000 K, the light leans amber and suits meals; between 3000 and 4000 K, it becomes more neutral and renders colours accurately for cooking. Choose a bulb rated for outdoor use, as temperature swings do not help fragile models. To adjust the intensity in the evening, dimmable pendants pair well with a compatible bulb.
Do not exceed 60 W: why the limit matters
Behind the glass piece, the heat of an overly powerful bulb does not escape. The socket and the weave are rated for 60 W maximum: staying below protects the rattan, the glass and the wiring. An LED of equivalent power gives off far less heat and is more than enough under a woven shade. If the kitchen needs more light, add LED lighting above an island rather than pushing a single bulb.
What diameter and height for your room?
Both models measure Ø 40.5 cm by H 43.3 cm: a visible ball format that fills the space without saturating it. Above a table, leave 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the pendant and the tabletop; under a terrace or in an entrance, raise it to 2.10 m minimum to let people pass.
One large format or several light points?
A 40.5 cm ball comfortably crowns a table for four to six people. Beyond that, it is better to multiply the light points than to increase the diameter: two pendants aligned above a long worktop replace each other without competing. In a light interior, a discreet model such as the modern white colours blends into the ceiling and leaves the table as the focal point.
Measure before drilling
Three measurements to take: the ceiling height, the position of the beams or the mounting support, and the useful cable length. A wooden beam shifts the fixing point, a low ceiling shortens the drop. Also check the clearance around the ball so it touches neither a wall nor a blind. Finally, check the weight your hook can bear before installing the light.
Rattan, wicker or bamboo: what is the difference?
Rattan is a solid stem of climbing palm, tightly woven, light brown and supple; wicker is a willow, with finer and lighter strands; bamboo is a hollow stem, smooth and straight. Outdoors, what matters is the finish and the shelter: these pendants combine woven rattan, steel and glass, with an IP44 rating.
Rattan, the weaving material
Raw rattan shows a light brown beige, slightly honey-toned, with darker veins at the nodes. It darkens over time and takes on an amber patina. Its suppleness allows tight weaves, hence fine shadows on the wall. It is the material of both models in the collection, and the one that ages best in sheltered outdoor use.
Wicker and bamboo: other weaves
Wicker gives a lighter and finer look, long used in basketry; bamboo, with its straight stems, produces a more regular and geometric weave. Both call for the same care: dust, wipe with a slightly damp cloth, dry. To go further, compare the bamboo and rattan variants and the rattan and wicker weaves.
Bronze or white: which rattan pendant colour should you choose?
Bronze warms a wooden terrace, a stone facade or a living room in natural tones. White brightens a dark wall, a light kitchen or a Scandinavian interior, and blends into the decor. Both finishes share the same Ø 40.5 cm ball and the same weave: only the effect on the wall changes.
| Finish | Materials | Socket | Protection rating | Max power | Dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lindendale bronze | Steel, glass, woven rattan | E27 | IP44 | 60 W | Ø 40.5 cm, H 43.3 cm |
| Lindendale white | Steel, glass, woven rattan | E27 | IP44 | 60 W | Ø 40.5 cm, H 43.3 cm |
Choosing the finish according to the setting
First look at what surrounds the light: a stone wall, a timber frame and teak furniture call for bronze, which matches them effortlessly. A white wall, a light render or a lacquered kitchen call for white. White rattan pendants visually disappear into the ceiling, while the black rattan versions create a sharp contrast against a light background.
Matching the pendant to the furniture
Keep a single dominant colour: two rattans in different shades side by side cancel each other out. If the furniture is natural wood, bronze extends the whole; if it is light metal, stay with white or a white metal. Both finishes in the collection come with a 2-year warranty.
How do you care for a rattan pendant outdoors?
Regular dusting with a soft cloth or a brush vacuum attachment is enough. For a more thorough clean, wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then let it air dry before switching back on. Avoid abrasive products, direct water jets and oil on a light fixture: the rattan is woven over steel and protected to IP44.
How do you clean a rattan shade?
In spring, dust it dry, strand by strand if the weave is tight. Then a barely damp cloth is enough for marks of use. Before winter, check the weave and the fixing, and tighten if needed. If the piece is heavily exposed, bring the light inside or cover it during the bad season. No miracle product, no brand, no dosage: clear water and drying time.
What should you do if the rattan has blackened?
Blackened rattan is often caused by standing humidity or accumulated dust. Clean with a slightly damp cloth, without abrasive or water jet, then let it dry in the open air. Then check that the light stays under a shelter: that is the best prevention, along with an IP44 rating. If the weave is crumbling on several strands, replacement is safer than repair.

Frequently asked questions
Are rattan light fixtures safe?
Yes, provided the light is designed for outdoor use. These pendants combine woven rattan with a steel frame and a glass piece, with an E27 socket and a power limited to 60 W. The IP44 rating protects them from water spray: simply place them away from driving rain.
What is the natural colour of rattan?
Raw rattan shows a light brown beige, slightly honey-toned, with darker veins at the weaving nodes. It darkens with age and takes on an amber patina. It is this natural tone that you find in a rattan shade; the bronze or white finishes dress this base.
Where can I find a rattan shade?
A rattan shade can be found in collections of natural fibre lights, as a pendant, a wall light or a table lamp. At Designix, woven rattan pendants are gathered in a dedicated collection, with variants designed for the kitchen, the living room and the bedroom.
Which oil is recommended for rattan?
The rattan of a light fixture does not need oil: a nourishing oil is mainly used on furniture, to prevent it cracking in the sun. On a woven pendant with a steel frame and a glass piece, a gentle dusting, a damp cloth and complete drying before switching back on are enough.
Can a rattan pendant be paired with a rattan cantilever chair?
Yes, both share the same family of weaving and the same boho spirit. On a sheltered terrace, a Ø 40.5 cm ball pendant above the table, with rattan chairs around it, forms a coherent set. Simply keep one dominant colour to avoid visual overload.
Last step before confirming: note the height of your support, the cable length you need and the colour temperature you want. Then browse the collection, compare the two finishes and choose the one that matches your wall.
