For a garden or pergola, the protection rating decides before anything else: IP65 on a spot exposed to rain and jets, IP54 on a covered terrace or a conservatory, IP20 only under an awning. Material, colour and hanging height are chosen afterwards, once the actual location of the light is settled.
Which outdoor pendant light should you choose for a garden depending on where it hangs?
The protection rating decides: an IP65 such as the Nido IP65 pendant light withstands a pergola or an exposed wall, an IP54 such as the Cordata braided rope pendant light suits a covered terrace or a conservatory, and IP20 models are only placed under an awning, sheltered from direct rain.
Outdoor pendant light: terrace, conservatory or pergola?
On a covered terrace, water mostly arrives through sideways splashes and wind: an IP54 is enough, which is the case for Cordata, measuring 40 x 30.5 cm, in plastic and woven wood, in a taupe, white or green spirit that blends into the greenery. A closed conservatory is treated like a room: any model from the light that adapts to every room finds its place there, as long as it stays away from watering zones.
Outdoor pendant light for pergola: when should you aim for IP65?
An open pergola, an unsheltered wall or an awning battered by rain require an IP65: dust and water jets do not reach it. Nido, in plastic and wood, measures 17 x 30 cm and can be hung at beam height or as a wall light on a sheltered wall. To light a dining area without multiplying light points, modern LED pendant lights with integrated LED avoid changing bulbs at height.
| Location | Rating to aim for | Model from the selection | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exposed garden, open pergola, unsheltered wall | IP65 | Nido, plastic and wood, 17 x 30 cm | Withstands splashes and dust |
| Covered terrace, conservatory | IP54 | Cordata, braided ropes, 40 x 30.5 cm | Withstands water splashes |
| Under an awning or sheltered window edge | IP20 | Soirée Enchantée, Kaito, Zenitho, Rolande, Footlume | To be placed away from direct rain |
How do you hang a pendant light in the garden or under a pergola?
The light hangs from a hook fixed into the beam or the frame, then is adjusted in height: several models in the selection have an adjustable cable up to 150 cm, while Footlume reaches 82 cm. Above a planter or a flower bed, keep enough clearance so the flowers do not touch the light.
Pendant light for planter and flower boxes: at what height?
The hook must be solid and screwed into a structural part, never into thin panelling. Then allow around 60 to 80 cm between the top of the plants and the bottom of the light: plants grow, and an adjustable model can be raised without removing the fixing. This long adjustment also works under a high ceiling, like the large Soirée Enchantée pendant light, offered from 65 to 148 cm.
Outdoor pendant light for flowers: which fixing?
In a garden, prefer a closed hook support, in treated steel, so the cable does not come loose in the wind. The cable must pass through the hook and come back down freely: that is what allows adjustment. If you are lighting a high traffic area, look at design pendant lights for staircases, and for a low light point near a door, an entrance light is adjusted shorter.
Which material and colour should you choose for an outdoor pendant light?
Plastic and woven wood equip terrace and conservatory models, while metal, steel and glass dress character pieces. In terms of colour, white and taupe fade into the foliage, black structures and gold warms a pergola or a wall.
Decorative pendant light for garden: which material holds up best?
Plastic and wood withstand the humidity of a conservatory or covered terrace without special maintenance. Painted or treated metal suits a sheltered spot; steel and glass are reserved for dry areas or indoors. The steel and aluminium of black metal pendant lights are placed under an awning, while gold lights warm a pale facade.
White, black or gold: which colour outdoors?
On a white wall or pale cladding, white almost disappears, which puts the light alone in the foreground. Black draws a clean line against a plant background and matches garden furniture. Gold, more visible, takes on the decorative role: it is reserved for a pergola wall or an interior. Light wood remains the safe choice for wood for a living room feel extended outdoors on a sheltered terrace.
How do you use these pendant lights in a living room, kitchen or bedroom?
A living room pendant light is chosen first for its shape: openwork sphere, Japanese-style square or black cylindrical tubes, with a cable adjusted to the right height. Above an island or a kitchen table, choose a compact format, ideally dimmable, in a finish that follows the room's decor.
Living room chandelier: which shape above the sofa?
An openwork sphere like Zenitho, 30 cm, in metal and brass with an E27 socket, fills the volume without overwhelming the room, and its IP20 suits a dry living room. A model adjustable up to 150 cm can be lowered if the ceiling is high. For a bedroom, white pendant lights for the bedroom blend into a pale ceiling and light without drawing the eye.
Modern kitchen decor: which pendant light above an island?
Above an island, a 25.8 cm wide square like Kaito or the four black cylindrical tubes of Rolande, 62 cm long, light the worktop without blocking the view. LED pendant lights for the kitchen benefit from being grouped on a single control point. For a more dressed-up look, glass models for the kitchen and a vintage feel in the kitchen work over an open table.
Which light for a toilet, a hallway or an entrance?
In a toilet, a hallway or an entrance, a small format is enough: several models in the selection measure 30 cm or less in diameter, with an E27 socket or an integrated 15 W LED. An IP20 rating is suitable, as these rooms are dry and without water splashes.
Light for toilet: which model on the ceiling?
A 30 cm diameter like Zenitho or a 25.8 cm square like Kaito fit in a small space without obstructing a door opening. An E27 bulb or an integrated 15 W LED is more than enough. A dark colour shows less than white in a room without a window: see black for a bedroom and windowless rooms, and design LED pendant lights for a more graphic design.
Light for toilet and hallway: which size?
In a hallway, keep the bottom of the light above the walking line, around 210 cm from the floor, or choose a short model like Footlume with an 82 cm drop. A 30 cm long format is satisfied with a single light point. For a stairwell or a high entrance, a model with a long cable remains the best option.
Integrated LED, E27 or G9 socket: which technology for outdoors?
The whole selection runs on LED. Some models include an integrated LED, others take a bulb with an E27, G9 or GU10 socket, at power ratings of 10 to 15 W. Some pendant lights accept a dimmer, useful for lowering the light in the evening.
Solar pendant light for garden: is there a version without a plug?
This selection does not include a solar pendant light: the listed models run on mains power. For a pergola without an electrical supply, plan the power and cable routing before choosing the light, then fix the hook in the same place. It is simpler than adding a connection afterwards.
Do you need a dimmable model outdoors?
A dimmer is mainly used to lower the intensity late in the evening, when strong light becomes annoying on a terrace. Not all models accept it: check the dimmable models before ordering, and make sure the bulb fitted in an E27 or G9 socket is itself compatible. On all our pendant lights, the dimmer remains an option, not a factory setting.

How do you choose, order and get delivery?
Payment is secure, delivery is tracked and returns are provided, with Designix customer service for any question before or after purchase. Depending on the model, the manufacturer warranty runs from 2 years to 5 years, and some pendant lights accept a dimmer.
What warranty on a garden pendant light?
The selection is split between two durations: 2 years on most references and 5 years on some of them. Before confirming, note the material and protection rating of the model you want. An IP65 outdoors exposed, or an IP54 on a covered terrace, uses the light in its intended conditions, which remains the best way to make it last.
How do you get advice before ordering?
Describe the location, the available height under the beam and the finish you want: Designix customer service will point you to a suitable protection rating and format. To compare looks by room, browse the modern white pendant lights before making your choice. Secure payment, tracked delivery and returns then frame the order.
Frequently asked questions
Outdoor pendant light: what is the difference between IP54 and IP65?
IP54 protects against water splashes, IP65 also withstands jets and dust. In the selection, Cordata is IP54 for a covered terrace or a conservatory, and Nido is IP65 for an exposed garden or an open pergola.
Is there a solar pendant light for garden?
This selection does not include a solar pendant light: the listed models run on mains power, with an integrated LED or a bulb with an E27, G9 or GU10 socket. For a pergola without an electrical supply, it is better to plan the power before choosing the light.
Which outdoor pendant light for a pergola should you choose?
For an open pergola, aim for an IP65 rating like the Nido pendant light, in plastic and wood, measuring 17 x 30 cm. If the pergola is covered or against a sheltered wall, an IP54 model like Cordata, in braided ropes, is enough.
Can you hang a pendant light above a planter or a flower bed?
Yes, provided you fix the hook into a beam and adjust the cable to leave clearance between the flowers and the light. Several models in the selection have an adjustable cable up to 150 cm.
Which light for a toilet?
A small ceiling format works: several pendant lights in the selection measure 30 cm or less in diameter, with an E27 socket or an integrated LED. An IP20 rating is enough in a toilet, a dry room, and the LED gives off little heat.
