A modern glass chandelier comes down to two measurements: the diameter, to compare with that of the table or sofa, and the cable drop, to set before fixing to the ceiling. Glass shades in opal, smoked or faceted finishes, mounted on a metal, steel or brass frame, give a diffused light and a clear outline in the room.
What is a modern glass chandelier and what light does it give?
A modern glass chandelier is a light fitting with several light points whose shades are made of glass, often opal, smoked or faceted, mounted on a metal, steel or brass frame. The glass diffuses the light without glare: opal globes soften it, smoked glass filters it, golden facets warm it.
Modern glass chandeliers: what glass changes about the light
Opal glass hides the source and gives an even light, practical above a table or in a bright living room. Smoked glass, as on the smoked glass of Neblina, darkens the outline and creates contrast on a white wall. Facets, as on Lumiya and its golden facets, reflect the light and warm up the result. Seni, with its 60 x 110 cm frame in E14 socket and its textured globes, sits between globe and pendant.
Modern Murano glass chandelier: a question of blown glass
Murano glass refers to glass blown by mouth in that Italian region: bubbles, irregular thickness, colours that vary slightly from one piece to the next. In our collection of home lighting, the work on the glass stays visible (textured globes, smoked glass, facets), but the product pages do not state this origin. For a more dressed-up look, also see the modern crystal chandeliers.
Which modern glass chandelier should you choose for a living room?
For a living room, go for a glass chandelier with several globes or rings, whose diameter stays in proportion to the room and the ceiling height. Most of the collection is intended for the living room, from the opal globe to smoked glass, with adjustable cables and sometimes a dimmer.
Modern living room chandelier: the globe models
A modern living room chandelier reads better when the light points are numerous and evenly spaced. The Roslineta chandelier and its white globes combines a conical shade with E14 globes, in glass and steel. Seni and its eight textured globes drops over 60 x 110 cm, up to an adjustable height. For a tighter outline, the family of glass chandeliers for living rooms gathers these formats.
Living room chandeliers: which diameter for which room
The general rule is that the chandelier diameter should be about a third of the living room width, and that at least 2.10 m of clearance should remain below the lowest point. The rings in the collection range from 63 to 103 cm depending on the number of heads, and the sets reach 100 cm. For a room fitted with non-screwed modules, compare with the LED models for the living room.
Modern chandelier for a dining room: what size above the table?
Above a table, the drop matters as much as the diameter: several models in the collection drop to 150 cm, others have an adjustable cable height. Widths range from a compact format to 103 cm rings, to be chosen according to the length of the table top.
Chandelier above a table: what hanging height?
As a rule, leave 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the fitting and the top of a dining table, a little more if the chandelier is wide. Mireno drops to 150 cm with nine amber globes on a black bar, Neblina on nine smoked glass pendants: in both cases, the cable is adjusted by sliding the pendant through the cable clamp before tightening the cable clamp for good. Find these formats among the modern chandeliers for dining rooms.
Round or rectangular table: which chandelier format?
Over a round table, a central or ring chandelier works better: it follows the curve of the table top. Over a rectangular table, a horizontal bar or two aligned pendants light the whole length. Pallia, with its five opal globes on a wavy frame, suits a table for four to six. For a more graphic outline, browse the design chandeliers for dining rooms.
Modern glass chandelier for a kitchen, hallway and small spaces?
In a kitchen and in a hallway, look for a more compact chandelier, often black, white or gold, with two to six light points. Part of the collection is intended for the kitchen and hallway, such as the models with five opal globes or six spherical discs on a horizontal rod.
Modern kitchen chandelier: what lighting above a worktop?
Above a worktop, light the work area, not the floor: a short, wide format and a warm white light between 2700 and 3500 K are enough. Pallia and Sage both use a G9 socket, with a low frame, which keeps the view clear. This is the type of model that works for a modern kitchen decor without overloading the worktop. For a passageway, see the modern chandeliers for hallways.
Modern toilet decor: a small light fitting rather than a chandelier?
In a toilet, a short, shallow light fitting is better than a large chandelier: the ceiling is low, the room narrow. Reya offers glowing discs staggered over several rod heights, and Fabricia a round aluminium format in many colours, adjustable up to a large cable height. Always check the IP rating before choosing. Also see the modern chandeliers for corridors.
Chic and modern chandelier: how do you match it to a modern decor?
For a modern decor, keep the materials few: glass and metal, one dominant colour among white, black or gold, and a clear shape. A chandelier with globes or discs is enough to structure a living room, and a wall light completes the lighting where the chandelier does not reach.
Modern living room decor: which chandelier with a bright interior?
On light walls, a smoked glass chandelier or one with a black frame draws a clean line without weighing the room down. A gold model, such as the Lunessa double ring, adjustable and dimmable, brings a warm point. The rest of the room echoes the finish of the fitting in just two or three details. For a very white interior, see the modern white chandeliers and the gold finishes.
Modern living room wall light: completing the lighting without overloading
A wall light is used where the chandelier does not light: back wall, room entrance, reading corner. Stay within the same family of materials and colours as the chandelier so the two fittings answer each other. For the bedroom, lighting often comes from a single point rather than a wide chandelier: see the LED bedroom lighting.
E14, E27, G9, G4 or LED socket: how do you choose your chandelier?
The socket determines which bulbs you can fit: E14 for small globes, E27 for wider bulbs, G9 and G4 for compact light points, integrated LED or GU10 for non-screwed modules. The collection covers these formats, to be chosen according to the number of light points.
Two points to keep in mind: most models in the collection run on LED, and a dimmer is only possible on a small number of them, including the models with integrated LED. Metal frames go as well with glass as with crystal: compare with the modern metal chandeliers.
| Socket or technology | Type of source | Where to find it | To remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| E14 | Small screw socket | Roslineta, Seni, Lumiya | Multiply the points without volume |
| E27 | Standard screw socket | Mireno, Neblina, Veridia | Bulbs that are easy to replace |
| G9 | Small pin socket | Pallia, Sage, Fabricia | Compact format, close points |
| G4 | Very small pin socket | Sphère Éclatante, Yria | Reserved for small shades |
| Integrated LED | Non-replaceable module | Lunessa | No bulb to change, dimmable |
| GU10 | Pin socket | Reya | Models with glowing discs |
How do you install and maintain a modern glass chandelier?
All models in the collection are rated IP20: they are fitted indoors, in a dry space, never in a bathroom or outdoors. Assembly is done on the ceiling on a canopy, with a cable to adjust before fixing, and cleaning with a soft cloth on the glass.
Fitting a glass chandelier: in what order?
Cut the power at the circuit breaker, identify the wires, then fix the canopy to the ceiling box before hanging the whole thing. Adjust the cable length and the height of each globe at that point, not after. On a large format with many globes, plan a solid fixing: the weight of the glass and metal is concentrated on a single point.
Cleaning a glass chandelier without scratching it
Glass and metal are cleaned with a soft, slightly damp cloth, without abrasive products or scouring pads. Wipe the glass when cold, never on a hot bulb. To find out the warranty conditions that apply, write to us: we will send them before purchase. For light finishes, see the gold metal chandeliers.
Opal glass, smoked glass or golden facets: which model for which effect?
Opal glass gives a soft, even light, smoked glass filters it and darkens the outline, golden facets warm it. Depending on the effect you want, go for white globes, smoked glass in nine pendants, or amber globes set on a black bar.
| Room | Formats noted | Type of light | Socket or technology | To remember |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Rings from 63 to 103 cm, sets up to 100 cm | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K | Integrated LED, E14, E27, G4 | Diameter in proportion to the height |
| Dining room | Pendants up to 150 cm, set of 60 x 110 cm | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K | E14, E27, G9 | A low outline keeps the guests in view |
| Bedroom | Round shapes, tubes, staggered discs | Depending on the bulbs chosen | G9, integrated LED, GU10 | A narrow model is enough |
| Kitchen | Five opal globes, six discs, bar and globes | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K | G9, E14, E27 | Compact format above the worktop |
| Hallway and corridor | Staggered discs and small round formats | Depending on the bulbs fitted | G9, integrated LED | Low drop in a passageway |
Sage, six discs on a horizontal rod, suits a minimalist decor, and a set with faceted globes or golden facets dresses the room more. For a more Art Deco result, see the Art Deco glass chandeliers, and for an exceptional piece, the luxury chandeliers.
Frequently asked questions
Which modern chandelier should you choose for a living room?
The choice comes down to the diameter and the number of light points. In the collection, living room sets range from a compact model to 103 cm rings, in opal glass, smoked glass or golden facets, with adjustable cables and sometimes a dimmer depending on the model.
Chic and modern chandelier: which model should you pick?
A model that combines glass with a fine frame in metal, steel or brass, and that limits the number of colours. A set with golden faceted globes or opal globes on a black bar gives a clean outline, more dressed up than a chandelier with a single shade.
Which modern decor should you adopt with a glass chandelier?
Keep a light wall to let the fitting draw, then echo its finish in two or three details: furniture feet, handles, frame. A smoked glass or gold chandelier goes well with white and light wood, without multiplying materials.
Modern kitchen chandelier: is it possible above a worktop?
Yes, provided you choose a compact format, such as the models with five opal globes or six spherical discs, and check the drop. All models in the collection are IP20: they suit a dry interior, not a damp room.
Modern Murano glass chandelier: what is the difference?
Murano glass refers to glass blown by mouth in that Italian region, more artisanal in its result. In the collection, the work on the glass stays visible: textured globes, smoked glass, golden facets, but the origin of the pieces is not stated on the product pages.
