Allow 210 to 240 cm to light above a sofa, 140 to 160 cm for a reading corner or bedside, and an adjustable stem near the worktop. Each product page states the actual height, the socket (usually E27), the IP20 rating and, on some models, whether a dimmer is included.
Which floor lamp to choose for the living room, bedroom or office?
A living room floor lamp is chosen tall, often 210 to 240 cm, to light above a sofa, a bedroom model more compact around 140 to 160 cm, and an adjustable office floor lamp to place light on the worktop.
Living room floor lamp
At the end of a sofa or in a free corner, it lights the seat without switching on the ceiling light. Arcs rise from 210 to 240 cm and reach up to 240 cm, column lamps with a shade drop from 144 to 160 cm. Point the shade towards the seat, never towards the eyes. Black-stemmed living room floor lamps stay discreet, a light shade gives more light.
Bedroom and office floor lamp
In a bedroom, a compact model of 110 to 160 cm with a closed shade is better, as it does not glare from the bed. A bedroom floor lamp in wood or fabric softens the light. In an office, an adjustable stem brings light onto the worktop without the hand casting a shadow. See also the office floor lighting for models with an adjustable head.

What light does an LED floor lamp give and which bulb should you choose?
The selection combines two approaches: floor lamps with integrated LED, ready to use, and models with an E27 or E14 socket where the bulb is replaceable. The stated colour temperatures are warm whites from 2700 to 3500 K, suited to both living room and bedroom.
Halogen floor lamp with dimmer: is it still possible?
It all depends on the socket: an E27 socket accepts several types of bulb, halogen included. A halogen source runs hotter and uses more power than an LED for comparable light, over the same period of use. Also check that the dimmer supports the chosen bulb: some dimmers buzz with low-energy sources. For safety, keep the shade clear.
LED floor lamp or replaceable bulb: which to choose?
Integrated LED cannot be replaced: it simplifies use and ages with the fixture. A screw-in bulb, by contrast, lets you choose the brightness and colour temperature and replace it without changing the stem. LED floor lamps suit those who no longer want to think about it, E27 models suit those who like to adjust. Also look at the dimmable floor lamps to fine-tune the light in the evening.
| Source | Socket | Wattage stated on the product page | Models concerned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screw-in bulb | E27 | 40W | Cézan, Arvo, Velia, Iera, Velna, Nid d'abeille, Tibra |
| Screw-in bulb | E27 | 10W or 15W | Séva, Noira, Velio |
| Integrated LED | LED | 7W, 8W or 10W | Torin, Naos, Vellea, Noval, Tubar, Biron |
| Small socket | E14 | Not stated | Small-socket models in the selection |
Arc, tube, round or ball floor lamp: which shape gives which effect?
The shape decides the floor space and the pool of light. An arc reaches far, with heights of 210 to 240 cm and a reach of up to 240 cm, a tube stays straight and understated, a ball or round shape diffuses more widely around the stem.
Living room ball floor lamp
A spherical shade diffuses over 360 degrees: light goes both up and down, with no preferred axis. It is the choice for a living room corner that should stay soft. The stated diameters range from Ø 45 to 60 cm, enough to light an armchair and its coffee table. Find these volumes in the ball floor lamps, often in glass or light metal.
Arc floor lamp in a living room or dining room
The arc moves the source above the sofa or table without putting a stem in the walkway: that is its whole point. Models in the collection peak at 210 or 240 cm, with a pleated shade of Ø 60 cm for the cream arc floor lamp with pleated shade. The adjustable black and gold arc floor lamp plays the same role with more contrast.
Which material and colour to choose for a floor lamp?
Metal structures most models, often combined with fabric for the shade, glass, wood or linen. In terms of colour, black dominates, ahead of white, gold, silver and beige: a dark base blends into the decor, a light shade gives more light.
Wood, linen or glass floor lamp
Wood and bamboo warm up an already light interior, and the Séva wood tube floor lamp gives an understated version, 110 cm high and 50 cm wide. Linen and fabric soften the light and a white living room. A wood floor lamp pairs well with Scandinavian furniture, while glass diffuses differently and wipes clean in one stroke.
Black, white or gold floor lamp: what effect?
A black base visually disappears and lets the shade speak: it is the most common shade in the selection. White lightens a small living room and bounces light back. Gold finishes catch the light in a dark interior, in contrast with a black shade. For a very discreet look, a matte metal structure remains the most neutral. A black floor lamp goes with almost everything.
How to choose the height, reach and dimmer of a floor lamp?
Start with the total height: 140 to 160 cm for a side floor lamp, 210 to 250 cm for a living room model or an arc. The reach of an arc goes up to 240 cm, and half the models accept a dimmer to adjust the lighting.
Floor lamp: what height for a sofa or armchair?
Measure the height of your sofa back: the source should pass above it to light the page or the coffee table. A model of 144 to 160 cm suits an armchair, an arc is more justified in front of a wide seat. Also allow for clearance around the base, around 30 cm, to avoid tripping over it.
Floor lamp shade: how to choose it?
A wide, light shade diffuses more broadly, a closed shade concentrates light downwards. The stated diameters range from Ø 45 to 75 cm depending on the model. In a bedroom, prefer a closed shape so you cannot see the bulb from the pillow. The floor lamp comes in all these shade sizes.
Can a floor lamp be installed in a toilet, a hallway or outside?
The whole selection is IP20: these floor lamps are intended for dry rooms in the home. A compact model fits in a toilet or hallway, but an outdoor or solar floor lamp requires a different protection rating, suited to rain and humidity.
Toilet and small space floor lamp
A compact bedroom floor lamp, 110 to 148 cm, fits in a toilet or small hallway without blocking the door. Check the base diameter on the floor and the width of the shade: it is the shade that catches the eye in a narrow space. Warm light around 2700 to 3000 K is more comfortable there than a cool white.
Outdoor or solar floor lamp: why IP20 is not enough
The protection rating describes resistance to dust and water. IP20 means no protection against splashes is provided: a terrace, balcony or damp bathroom requires a higher rating, which these models do not state. A solar or outdoor floor lamp therefore belongs to another product family, to be found outside this selection.
How to choose an original floor lamp for the living room?
An original floor lamp is about shape and finish rather than size: asymmetric arc, pleated shade, textured glass, black and gold contrast. It goes in a free corner, next to a sofa or a console, to create a point of light without a ceiling light.
Original living room floor lamp: where to place it?
A free corner, the end of a sofa or the side of a console: what matters is that the base does not cut across a walkway. The Velio industrial tube floor lamp takes on a workshop style in 15W with an E27 socket, while a model with a large pleated shade stays softer. Designer pieces are recognisable by these shape details.
Design or contemporary floor lamp: what is the nuance?
Design emphasises silhouette and material, contemporary emphasises clean lines and current finishes. Most models are in a modern style, a few in contemporary or minimalist. Browse the modern style floor lamps and the modern living room floor lamp depending on the effect you want, then the most affordable models if budget guides the choice.
How to care for a floor lamp and keep it for a long time?
Regular dusting of the shade and base is enough: a soft cloth on metal, glass or plastic, gentle vacuuming on fabric and linen. Integrated LED sources cannot be replaced, while an E27 or E14 model is extended simply by changing the bulb.
Cleaning a fabric or linen shade
Unplug the fixture before anything. On fabric and linen, use the brush attachment of the vacuum at minimum power, without rubbing, so as not to mark the fibres. A slightly damp microfibre cloth is enough on glass, aluminium and painted metal, then dry immediately to avoid marks. Avoid abrasive products on gold or silver finishes, which wear with rubbing.
Bulb, dimmer, warranty: what wears out and what lasts
The bulb is the wearing part on an E27 or E14 model: replace it with a source of equivalent wattage to that stated on the product page. A dimmer mainly wears out if it works with an incompatible bulb. The rest, base, shade and structure, does not move. The dimmable version remains the most flexible day to day.
Designix reassurance: secure payment, tracked delivery, returns possible and Designix customer service to help you choose. The 2-year manufacturer warranty covers the whole selection, and all our lighting meets the same conditions.

Frequently asked questions about floor lamps
How to choose a floor lamp for the living room?
Start with the height: a model of 210 to 240 cm, or an arc, lights above a sofa, while a floor lamp of 140 to 160 cm suits a reading corner. Then check the socket, the shape of the base and the colour of the shade.
Can you put a halogen bulb in a floor lamp with a dimmer?
It depends on the socket provided: models in the collection are mostly E27, which accepts several types of bulb. A halogen source runs hotter and uses more power than an LED for comparable light, over the same period of use.
Which original floor lamp to choose for a living room?
Look for shape before colour: an offset arc, a large-diameter pleated shade, textured glass or a black and gold contrast stand out from the ordinary. Place it in a free corner, near a sofa or a console, to light without a ceiling light.
How to choose the shade of a floor lamp?
The shade decides how soft the light is: the lighter and wider it is, the broader the diffusion. The stated diameters range from 45 to 60 cm on arc models. Fabric or linen softens, glass diffuses differently and cleans more easily.
Can a floor lamp be installed in a toilet or a damp room?
The floor lamps in the collection are all IP20, so intended for dry rooms. In a toilet or hallway, a compact floor model fits without taking up space. For a damp bathroom or outdoor use, a different protection rating is required.
