A flat pendant light sits close to the ceiling and sends its light straight down: the very thin disc or shade lights the table without dropping into your line of sight. Allow a 350 to 550 mm disc above a table seating four to six, and an elongated 93 cm format above an island.
What is a flat pendant light and what light does it give?
A flat pendant light is a hanging fixture whose diffuser forms a very thin disc or shade in metal, aluminium, steel or glass. Placed close to the ceiling, it directs light downwards, illuminates a table or worktop, and stays discreet in your line of sight.
Designer flat pendant light: disc, thin shade or horizontal bar
Three families sit side by side in this selection. The disc, in Ø 260, 350 or 550 mm, gives a round, crisp pool of light above the table. The flat shade in clear, smoked or ribbed glass filters the light and softens the halo: that is the case with Aurantium and its slim stem, or Oriberilo and its smoked glass. The horizontal bar, 93 cm long, spreads light along the whole length of an island, as on Bandeaula.
LED flat pendant light: light directed downwards
Most models carry an integrated LED in warm white, from 2700 to 3500 K. The beam goes down to the floor and the tabletop, not towards the walls: the room stays readable, with no halo on the ceiling. To compare colour temperatures and wattages, browse the integrated LED models, then the full range of lighting families if you are also looking for wall lights or floor lamps.
Flat pendant or classic pendant: what are the real differences?
The difference lies in the height it occupies. A flat disc stays a few tens of centimetres from the ceiling and leaves the view clear above the table. A classic pendant hangs lower, with a deep shade or a sphere, and takes up more visual space.
What a low profile changes in a living room
In a dining room, a low profile clears your line of sight: you see your guest, not the shade. In an open kitchen, it avoids breaking the perspective between the worktop and the living area. That is the strength of Rosdanisto and its 550 mm disc, or Livmilano and its two stacked flat discs.
When to prefer a globe pendant or a deep shade
A globe pendant diffuses in all directions and suits a lounge corner or an entrance, where you want ambient light rather than table lighting. A deep shade, on the other hand, refocuses the beam downwards and protects the eye when you are seated. Style comes after measurement: with a 2.50 m ceiling, a flat disc stays more comfortable than a fixture dropped 60 cm from the tabletop. Find the other silhouettes in the full pendant collection.
Which diameter and format for a living room, dining room or kitchen?
For a living room or dining room, a 350 to 550 mm disc works above a table seating four to six. Above an island, a 93 cm bar or a rail with several diffusers spreads the light better. A small Ø 260 mm suits an entrance or a reading corner.
| Format | Dimensions | Where it works best | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small disc | Ø 260 mm, H 170 mm | Entrance, desk corner, small bedroom | LED 7 W |
| Compact disc | Ø 29.2 cm and Ø 30.2 cm | Dining room, bedroom, hallway | E27, 60 W max |
| Standard disc | Ø 350 mm, H 14 cm | Typical living and dining rooms | LED 21 W |
| Large disc | Ø 550 mm, H 14 cm | Large table, open-plan room | LED 21 W |
| Elongated format | L 93 cm, H 18 to 312 cm | Kitchen island, long table | LED 20 W |
Living room pendant light: scale above the table
Take the width of the tabletop and divide it by three: a 350 mm disc on a 1.20 m table leaves the edges breathing, a 550 mm one fills a 1.80 m table better. Among living room pendants, the black Onddanisto disc in Ø 350 mm remains the most versatile scale.
Kitchen pendant: above the island and the worktop
On an island, the light must cover a long strip: a 93 cm bar, a rail with three 60 cm oval diffusers on Epli Mini 3L, or two aligned discs. A single small disc in the centre leaves dark zones at the sides. See the kitchen island lighting selection.
Black, grey, white or coloured flat pendant light: which finish to choose?
Black and grey underline the line of the disc above a light table. White and silver blend into a painted ceiling and make the room calmer. Brick red, terracotta or a gold detail bring colour without changing the format.
Black and grey flat pendant lights: contemporary contrast
On a white wall and a white ceiling, a black disc draws a crisp line: that is the effect of Onddanisto or Rosdanisto. Grey and silver, softer, pair with light wood and stainless steel, as on Admiral and its flat ribbed glass diffuser. Black finishes remain the easiest to match with a dark kitchen.
White and coloured flat pendant lights: blend in or stand out
A white or silver disc on a painted ceiling almost disappears: useful in a small room where you only want to see the light. Conversely, Sienna in brick red and Novdanisto in terracotta with a domed glass own their colour above a wooden table. For a very understated look, see the white versions, and for a bolder room, the more designer pieces.
Integrated LED, E27 or G9: which light source for a flat pendant light?
An integrated LED cannot be replaced, but gives a warm white of 2700 to 3500 K straight away, sometimes dimmable. An E27 socket accepts the bulb of your choice, up to 60 W max depending on the model. G9 is used on pendants with several small diffusers.
| Source | Socket | Temperature | Dimmable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated warm white LED | LED | 2700 to 3500 K | On some models |
| Dual-temperature LED | LED | 2700 to 3500 K or 4500 to 6500 K | Depending on the model |
| Screw bulb | E27 | Depending on the bulb, 60 W max | No |
| Multiple small diffusers | G9 | Depending on the bulb | Yes on the rail model |
LED, E27 or G9 socket: what it changes in use
An integrated LED simplifies installation and keeps a very thin line, with no visible bulb. The E27 socket leaves the choice of bulb and lets you change the temperature without changing the fixture, as on Urban Renewal in steel with an E27 socket. The smaller G9 is used on rails with three diffusers.
Warm white 2700-3500 K or cool white 4500-6500 K
Warm white makes wood and fabrics softer: it is the default choice for a dining room or bedroom. Cool white, more neutral, suits a worktop where you chop and read. Nordis, warm white or cool white, offers both temperatures in the same build. Half the models accept a dimmer: check this point before ordering.
At what height should a flat pendant light be installed above a table or in a stairwell?
Above a dining table, the bottom of the disc is generally placed between 75 and 85 cm from the tabletop, to light without dazzling your guests. In a stairwell or under a high ceiling, use the adjustable cable length, up to 312 cm on some models, to bring the light down.
XXL pendant and high ceiling: bring the light down without weighing it down
Under a 3 m ceiling, a 550 mm disc holds the volume without cluttering it: Sienna and Rosdanisto play this role. Under a very high ceiling, two aligned 350 mm discs give more even light than a single oversized model. Oriberilo adjusts its cable from 60 to 200 cm, which covers most living rooms.
Stairwell pendant: the right distance between two levels
In a stairwell, the pendant is placed over the open space, at a height that does not obstruct movement on the steps. A rail with three diffusers, adjustable up to 130 cm, lights several levels at once. Modern shapes with several light points are more useful here than a single disc.
Flat pendant light and IP20 rating: where can it be installed?
The flat pendant lights in this selection are rated IP20: they protect against dust and contact, not against moisture. They suit the living room, dining room, kitchen outside the splash zone and bedroom. A bathroom requires an IP44 rating or higher.
Bathroom pendant: why the IP rating comes before style
Above a bathtub or in the shower zone, steam and splashes require a reinforced protection rating. An IP20 disc has no place there, whatever its looks. Look instead for a model specifically designed for damp rooms: the technical sheet, never the photo, settles the question.
Kitchen, bedroom, living room: the dry rooms where IP20 is enough
Wherever no water is splashed, IP20 is the norm: living room, dining room, hallway, entrance, bedroom. For the latter, a Ø 260 to 350 mm disc in warm white and, if possible, dimmable, remains the most comfortable. See the bedroom pendants and the metal pendants for dry rooms.
How to install and care for a flat pendant light?
Fix the hook at the power point, set the cable length before connecting, then screw on the disc or shade. A microfibre cloth is enough on metal and aluminium, glass is cleaned with window cleaner. Always switch off the circuit before working.
Fixing, cable adjustment and connection
Switch off the breaker, identify the wires, fix the bracket to the ceiling at a solid point. Set the cable length before screwing on the diffuser: once the disc is in place, adjustment is less precise. Connection comes next, live and neutral, before restoring power. For a large space, the full range of pendant lights lists the adjustable cable lengths.
Cleaning a metal disc or a glass shade
On a lacquered disc, a slightly damp microfibre cloth is enough; avoid abrasive products that dull the satin finish. On clear, smoked or ribbed glass, a standard window cleaner and a lint-free cloth restore the transparency. Switch off the power before removing a diffuser, and never use a scouring sponge on aluminium.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: you order a light you can send back if it does not fit. One last check before confirming: verify the diameter, the cable length and dimmer compatibility on the model's sheet.
Frequently asked questions about flat pendant lights
What are the different types of pendant light?
There is the flat disc pendant, the flat shade in clear, smoked or ribbed glass, the horizontal bar, the rail with several diffusers and the globe pendant. Flat models are fixed close to the ceiling, with integrated LED or an E27 socket, and require a protection rating suited to the room.
What are the modern, on-trend pendant lights?
Fine lines dominate: black or grey disc from 350 to 550 mm, flat shade in smoked glass, horizontal bar, rail with three oval diffusers. On the light side, warm white from 2700 to 3500 K remains the majority, sometimes with a second cooler temperature and dimming. See the black pendants and the glass pendants.
Can a flat pendant light be installed in a bathroom?
Not from this selection: all models are rated IP20, protection against solids but not against moisture. A bathroom requires an IP44 rating or higher. These flat pendant lights are intended for the living room, dining room, kitchen outside the splash zone and bedroom.
How to choose an original pendant light?
Look for a format that breaks away from the plain disc: 93 cm horizontal bar, rail with three diffusers, flat shade in ribbed or smoked glass, brick red or terracotta disc. Originality comes from the shape and finish, while the technical sheet stays the same, IP20 and warm white. See the gold details.
Which flat pendant light for an Italian-style designer kitchen?
Aim for the finest line possible: black lacquered disc, flat glass shade, horizontal bar above the island. A warm white of 2700 to 3500 K makes worktops feel warmer. Check the adjustable cable length and dimmer compatibility if you have a dimmer switch.
