Start with the area you want to light before looking at models: a recessed ground fixture draws a path, a spike spotlight follows a planting bed, an adjustable wall light holds a facade without glaring. These design LED outdoor spotlights are then chosen on the light line, the housing colour and the white temperature.

Which design LED outdoor spotlight to choose depending on the area to light?

You choose an outdoor spotlight by starting from the area to light. For a path, a recessed ground model sets a regular route. For a planting bed, a spike spotlight moves as the plants grow. For a facade, an adjustable wall light illuminates without glaring.

Design LED outdoor spotlights: where to start

Look first at three things: the ground surface to sweep, the wall height available and what you want to see in the evening from the house. A path calls for low, regularly spaced points, a terrace for light that does not hit the eyes of seated people, a facade for a grazing beam that reveals the material without washing it out. The type of installation follows from these answers, not the other way round. The full lighting catalogue is a starting point if you are still hesitating between outdoor and indoor rooms.

Path, terrace or facade: which area to light first?

Start with the entrance route, it is what shows most and what is used every day. Then comes the terrace, then the facade, often lit last because it requires more points and more height. If you are looking for recessed outdoor spotlights, keep them for the path and slab edges: they disappear into the ground and let the light work alone.

Choosing your outdoor spotlight by type of installation
Type of spotlight Where it is installed What it lights What to check
Recessed in the ground Path, terrace, edge of planting bed A route or a wide area Suitable protection rating, water drainage, adjustable orientation
Spike Planting bed, lawn, planter A shrub, a wall, a relief Stem height, cable length, access to the power supply
Wall-mounted Facade, terrace wall, entrance A wall, a door, an outdoor staircase Strength of the support, beam orientation, housing colour
Adjustable on support Terrace, wall corner, decor A precise point: tree, sculpture, plant Rotation range, setting holding over time

How to install an LED outdoor spotlight?

Installation depends on the model: a spike spotlight is planted without tools, a recessed spotlight requires a cut-out in the ground or wall, a wall light is fixed to a solid support. Check the power supply, the cable length and the orientation setting before closing up.

Recess, spike or screw: three installations, three preparations

A recessed fixture requires a clean cut-out, a drained base so water does not stagnate and a beam setting made before final placement. A spike spotlight is content with loose soil and a thought-out cable route, but you must plan access to the socket or transformer. A wall light requires a sound wall: on hollow render or light cladding, the fixing must be handled differently. Adjustable spotlights with refined design are installed like the others, with a setting to fix once and for all.

What to check before drilling or planting

Locate the utility lines before drilling a slab or wall. Allow for the cable length needed between the power point and each spotlight, without stretching the wire. For installation without trenching, models without wiring, solar-powered avoid the connection but depend on the real sunlight in the area. Connection to the mains must be entrusted to an electrician.

What are the downsides of LED lamps outdoors?

Outdoor LEDs have few faults, but they exist: light easily judged cold if the temperature is badly chosen, electronics sensitive to humidity in low-end products, and light that decreases over time. The quality of the housing and the care taken in installation make the difference.

Does the LED outdoor spotlight replace a design halogen?

Yes, and the change shows mainly in three ways: consumption, clearly more contained at comparable light output, heat given off, much lower, and the choice of white shades, wider than in halogen. A design halogen kept a very warm light and a short service life. Switching to LED therefore requires choosing a colour temperature, which was not a consideration before. Existing installations often remain compatible with a standard cap bulb, to be checked on the model concerned.

Cold light, glare: how to put things right

Cold light almost always comes from a neutral white placed on a stone or wood facade: go back down to a warmer white and the harsh effect disappears. Glare is corrected by installation: direct the beam downwards or towards the wall, never towards the area where you sit. An adjustable orientation makes a big difference, particularly on outdoor spotlights that can be oriented.

What light colour for an LED outdoor spotlight?

Very warm white and warm white suit facades, wood and residential gardens, where they bring out materials without harshness. Neutral white, more frank, serves entrances and areas where you want to see clearly. It is better to keep a single temperature on the same facade.

2700 K, 3000 K, 4000 K: what it changes outdoors

The figure in kelvins describes the shade of white, not the power. The lower it is, the more the light tends towards gold; the higher it goes, the whiter and more contrasted it becomes. The usual reference outdoors is around 2700 K for stone and wood, around 3000 K for a terrace or residential garden, around 4000 K for an entrance or a route to be read.

Colour temperature of an outdoor spotlight: what rendering
Temperature Rendering Where it is most accurate
Very warm white, around 2700 K Golden light, close to the old halogen Stone facades, wood, traditional-style garden
Warm white, around 3000 K Slightly golden white, readable Terrace, path, residential garden
Neutral white, around 4000 K Frank white, more contrasted Entrance, technical area, route to be read

Lighting a terrace without glaring guests

On a terrace, the source must never come into the line of sight once seated. Direct the beam towards the ground, a wall or foliage, and keep the light points low. Two or three weak points are better than a powerful floodlight, which flattens the scene and tires the eyes. For the facade itself, low grazing lighting gives more relief than frontal light.

Which design spotlight for a path, a terrace or a facade?

A design spotlight is chosen first on the light line it draws: grazing on a facade, in a corolla in a planting bed, in a string along a path. Recessed, spike or adjustable, each format has its place, and the housing colour is decided last.

Ground spotlight, wall spotlight: which light line

A ground spotlight lights from bottom to top and lengthens volumes; a wall spotlight descends along the wall and underlines a door or a staircase. Along a path, alternate the two rather than aligning everything at the same angle: the step follows a light that changes rhythm better. All outdoor lighting solutions bring these families together, and spotlights with refined design go further in terms of housing finish.

Housing colours and materials

The collection has 22 models. For each model, the product page gives the housing material, the cap, the protection rating, the light temperature, the dimensions and the style. You can thus compare spotlights according to the facade and the use.

How to match an LED outdoor spotlight with the facade and the garden?

Match the spotlights to the facade by staying understated. The collection has 22 models. The product pages detail the colours and materials of the housing.

Black housing or white housing: which to choose

Black blends into dark stone, brick, dark wood and anthracite joinery. White suits light render, roughcast facades and Mediterranean atmospheres. The simplest is to align the housing with the dominant shade of the support. The white version and the black models allow you to keep the same family from one end of the house to the other.

Aluminium, steel, glass: the materials that hold up outdoors

Aluminium suits painted housings and parts exposed to rain. Stainless steel holds up well by the sea, provided it is maintained. Glass protects the source and lets light through without tinting it. Avoid mixing several metal shades on the same facade: the eye quickly spots the difference. Our selection of design spotlights helps visualise coherent families.

How to maintain an LED outdoor spotlight?

An outdoor spotlight lasts longer if it is cleaned with clear water without aggressive products, if the seal is kept in place and if the connections are checked once a year. Replace the bulb when it weakens, and the spotlight when the housing or electronics show signs of fatigue.

Cleaning an outdoor spotlight without damaging the seal

Cut the power before working. Wipe the glass and housing with a soft cloth and clear water, without a direct jet on the connections or abrasive product. Around a recessed fixture, clear leaves, soil and gravel that block the water channel. A pinched or displaced seal is put back in place or replaced before switching the power back on.

Bulb weakening: replace it or change the spotlight?

On a model with an interchangeable bulb, a standard cap such as GU10 is replaced without changing the luminaire. On a model with integrated LED, the drop in brightness announces the end of the module and the whole spotlight is replaced. First check the connection and the condition of the seal: humidity ingress often explains flickering. For indoor use, dimmable spotlights and staircase lighting follow the same steps.

Ordering from Designix

Payment is secure, delivery is tracked and returns are provided if the format does not suit. Designix customer service answers on the choice of installation type, colour temperature or bulb compatibility before ordering. Look first at the area to light, then the format, then the white: that is the order that avoids starting over. To compare the families before deciding, browse the entire lighting range, then the recessed outdoor spotlights and the outdoor spotlights that can be oriented.

Frequently asked questions

Does an LED outdoor spotlight consume less than a design halogen?

Yes, at comparable light output, an LED spotlight requires clearly less energy than a design halogen. It also heats up much less, which limits constraints around the housing and nearby plants. The gain shows mainly on lighting that is switched on every evening.

What is the difference between a recessed outdoor spotlight and a spike spotlight?

A recessed fixture is cut into the ground or wall: it disappears, lights from bottom to top and is installed once and for all. A spike spotlight is planted in a planting bed or lawn, moves and is reoriented with the seasons. The first is fixed, the second is mobile.

Can you install an LED outdoor spotlight yourself?

A spike spotlight on a ready-to-connect cable is installed without special tools. A recessed fixture requires a clean cut-out in the ground or wall, a wall light a solid support and careful fixing. Connection to the mains must be entrusted to an electrician.

Which LED outdoor spotlight for a terrace?

On a terrace, look for light that does not glare seated people: an adjustable recessed fixture at the edge of the slab, a wall light directed downwards or a low spike spotlight in the planting. Warm white brings out materials without harshness.

Should a path be lit with one spotlight or several?

Several regularly spaced points guide the step better than a single powerful source, which creates shadow areas and glares. Aim for a continuous string, with beams that overlap slightly and a low orientation towards the ground.

How to choose a design LED outdoor spotlight?

Look first at the light line it draws: grazing on a wall, in a corolla in a planting bed, in a string along a path. Then check the type of installation, the material and colour of the housing, then the white temperature suited to the facade. Recessed and adjustable spotlights cover both criteria at once.

To go further inside the house, living room spotlights and adjustable spotlights with refined design follow the same logic of choice, with temperatures and finishes designed for indoors.
