Office lighting: putting together the right working light

Layer three sources: a ceiling light or pendant for ambience, an adjustable desk lamp for the work surface, a discreet wall light on the wall. Keep the highest colour temperature over the work area and set the edge of the shade at eye level when seated, never in front of the screen.

Lighting: definition, and what an office needs on top

A light fitting is a complete lighting device: a source, a support, a diffuser. In an office it must light without dazzling and without casting the shadow of your body onto the keyboard. Three sources are better than one very powerful one, and the desk lamp remains the only point that is truly adjustable.

The three layers of professional office lighting

An office works on three levels: the ambience that fills the room, the task light that falls on the work surface, the accent that rests the eye. A single light point on the ceiling lights the floor and leaves the keyboard in the shadow of the body.

  • Ambience: ceiling light or pendant, broad undirected light, so the room is never dark around you.
  • Task: desk lamp or articulated wall light, aimed at the keyboard and not at your face.
  • Accent: discreet strip or wall light, which avoids the harsh contrast between the screen and the wall.
  • Rest: nothing. A dark area in the room is less tiring than a fourth light point.

Task lighting needs a real cone of light directed at the work surface, not an ambience lamp placed there by default.

Why a ceiling light alone is not enough for working

The ceiling light lights the room, not your sheet of paper. When seated, the head and shoulders intercept the downward light: the work surface receives the shadow, never the flow. This is the most common flaw in offices set up in a corner of the living room or in a spare bedroom.

When the room has no ceiling point, the solution changes in nature: lighting a room without a ceiling light means moving the source to the wall and the floor.

In a bedroom that also serves as an office, both uses are handled together: our bedroom and office lighting project thinks through both light layers from the start, rather than adding a lamp afterwards.

Which light for an office: ceiling, pendant or desk lamp?

The ceiling light sets the ambience, the desk lamp does the work. Between the two, the pendant decides when the desk occupies a fixed, identified position in the room.

Type What it lights Relevant when Limit
Ceiling light the whole room, flat the surface exceeds 10 m² cast shadows on the desk
Pendant a precise volume beneath it the desk does not move needs height adjustment, never in the line of sight
Wall light the work surface, laterally the wall is free on the right or left requires a socket nearby
Desk or floor lamp an adjustable cone the workstation moves or the room changes use takes up a corner of the work surface

Office ceiling lighting: which ceiling light for an office?

A ceiling light diffuses broadly and flatly: a good choice from 10 m² upwards, provided you add a task source. Look for an even output, with no hot spot on the floor, and a thickness that lets the room breathe.

  • Even output: no bright patch that cuts the room into uneven zones.
  • IP20: enough for a dry indoor office, no need to aim for a sealed lamp.
  • Dimmability: valuable in the evening, when the screen becomes the brightest source in the room.

An LED ceiling light simplifies maintenance: no bulb to replace, a stable output, and light that stays consistent from morning to evening.

Which pendant for an office?

A pendant frames a fixed workstation. The lower edge of the shade must stay above the seated eye line, allow 65 to 70 cm above the work surface, and never in the line of sight.

A narrow pendant suits better than a large diameter: a wide shade lights the whole room and loses its task effect.

Office wall lighting and office floor lamps

The wall light frees the work surface, the floor lamp moves. These are the two answers when the table is not fixed or when the wall lacks sockets.

An articulated LED wall light is fitted 40 or 50 cm above the work surface, on the side opposite the writing hand: the shadow falls behind the pen, not in front of it.

When the room changes use in the evening, a floor lamp set to one side does both: reading light above the armchair, a low halo the rest of the time.

Your office: which case is it?

Which colour temperature for an office?

Aim for 4000 K on the work surface and 2700 to 3000 K for the ambience of the room. Below 3000 K, warm light dulls concentration; above 5000 K, contrasts harden and tire the eyes at the end of the day.

The rule fits in one sentence: the whiter the light, the more it wakes you up. Our article on white or yellow light details this shift from room to room.

Which bulb for a desk lamp?

An E27 base with an 8 to 10 W LED bulb at 4000 K is enough for a work surface, ideally dimmable. An integrated LED source cannot be replaced: practical, but the lamp is lost the day it weakens.

Check the bulb base size before ordering: it is the most common mistake with old or second-hand desk lamps.

Our range of office bulbs is organised by colour temperature, which avoids mixing a cool white and a warm white in the same room.

What our survey says about desk lamps

In a survey of 99 references from our catalogue as of 12 October 2026, the E27 base is stated on 39 % of the listings and the LED source on 26 % (the feature is given on 95 of the 99 listings). The standard is therefore still the replaceable bulb.

Two constants stand out: IP20 is stated on 100 % of the survey, and the 2-year warranty on 99 % of the listings. An office does not need a sealed lamp, and the "freestanding" mounting is stated on 91 % of the completed listings.

How to choose the right desk lamp

Choose the height of the shade first, then the material, then the colour. A lamp is judged seated: the edge of the shade should reach eye level, the light should fall on the keyboard without crossing the screen, and the base should stay stable when you write.

Modern, luxury or Italian design desk lamp: material and style

Style comes after material. Metal gives structure and ages well, glass gives the most precious light, fabric softens it. In the survey of 99 references as of 12 October 2026, metal is stated on 51 % of the listings and glass on 33 %.

  • Modern: clean lines, metal or glass, white and black dominant in the survey (57 % and 48 %).
  • Luxury: brass, marble, gold finishes, stated on 25 % of the survey.
  • Italian design: a more sculptural silhouette, often in glass, where the object matters as much as the output.

A designer desk lamp can be spotted by a simple sign: it stays beautiful when it is switched off.

Desk lamp price: what makes the price vary

Three elements push the price up: the material of the shade, the presence of a dimmer, the nature of the source. Dimming is stated on only 19 % of the survey, and the 2-year warranty on 99 %: that is the baseline, not an extra.

Before deciding, nothing beats feedback from other buyers: the Google listing for the Vaulx-en-Velin shop can be checked in one click and stays up to date.

Lighting an office: the 6 points to check before buying

  • The edge of the shade reaches eye level once seated
  • The light can be directed: adjustable head or articulated arm
  • The base is clearly stated: E27, E14, GU10 or integrated LED
  • The source stays between 3500 and 4000 K over the work area
  • The protection rating matches the room: IP20 is enough in a dry office
  • The listing states the intended room: office, bedroom or living room

Frequently asked questions about office lighting

What type of lighting for an office?
Three sources are better than one powerful one: general light on the ceiling, an adjustable desk lamp for the task, and a secondary source on the wall or on a piece of furniture for ambience. The work area gets the highest colour temperature, the rest rests.
How do you install a desk lamp?
Place it on the work surface, on the side opposite your writing hand to avoid cast shadow, then aim the shade at the keyboard without having it in your eyes. Check that the base stays stable and that the cord does not cross the work area.
Where can you buy beautiful light fittings?
The house's desk lamp collection has 264 references as of 12 October 2026: table lamps, ceiling lights, pendants and wall lights, sorted by room and by use.
How do you choose a good desk lamp?
Look first at the direction of the light and the stability of the base, then at the base stated on the listing, and only last at the style. A lamp that lights badly will stay badly lit, whatever its silhouette.

What we check on every reference
