How many spotlights per m²: density and layout by room
This article is also available in French: Nombre de spot par m2

Allow 1 spotlight for every 3 to 4 m² for general lighting, which works out at 0.25 to 0.33 spotlights per m². Go down to 1 for every 2 to 3 m² in a kitchen, office or bathroom. Multiply the surface area by this ratio, then adjust according to ceiling height and wall colour.
How many spotlights per m² should you allow?
Density depends on three variables: how the room is used, the ceiling height and how light the walls are. A 20 m² room is not lit in the same way depending on whether you read there or prepare meals there.
On a living room renovation, these benchmarks are recalculated zone by zone: general lighting and task lighting do not target the same place.
How many spotlights per m2 depending on the room?
These densities apply to homes with a standard ceiling height.
