Kitchen LED pendant light: the right light, zone by zone

Allow 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the shade and the worktop, and two or three light points rather than just one in the centre. At 300 lumens per square metre, a 12 m² kitchen needs 3,600 lumens, split between 2,700 K above the table and 3,000 K over the work zones.

Which LED pendant light for a kitchen?

Choose the zone before the shape: a pendant hangs above the island, the table or an offset worktop, never in the centre of the ceiling by default. Set the drop between 75 and 85 cm from the worktop, and check the bulb base before ordering.

What is a pendant light?

A pendant is a light held by a cable or rod, with an adjustable height. It throws light downwards in a cone and concentrates it on a precise area. A ceiling light, by contrast, sits flush against the ceiling and lights broadly, without relief.

That difference decides everything in a kitchen: a table calls for a cone, a floor calls for a wash. On a full project, renovating the lighting in a kitchen and dining room is planned zone by zone, never point by point.

How to choose a kitchen pendant light?

Four criteria are enough to decide, in this order.

  • The zone to light: island, table or sink, with the exact surface in mind.
  • The adjustable drop: useful if the ceiling is low, sloped or offset.
  • The bulb base: E27 for a standard bulb, GU10 for a directional beam, G9 for small formats.
  • The shape: round above a round table, linear or oval above an elongated worktop.

Diameters and materials are detailed configuration by configuration in our guide to choosing a kitchen pendant light.

What is the difference between a chandelier and a pendant light?

A chandelier brings together several branches or light points, often large and decorative. A pendant has just one point, sometimes two, and is height adjustable. Above an island, a pendant is more precise; above a large dining table, a chandelier fills the space.

One detail often settles it: the number of points needed above the worktop. This comparison to tell a chandelier from a pendant light helps set the right format.

Pendant, aligned pendants or LED ceiling light: what to install in a kitchen

1 pendant 2 to 3 aligned pendants LED ceiling light
What it lights One precise task, above the worktop The island, the table and the mood The whole room, with no dark zone
Where to fix it In line with the preparation zone Aligned along the length of the island or table In the centre of the ceiling, away from the worktop
Drop above the worktop 75 to 85 cm 75 to 85 cm None, the light sits flush against the ceiling
Colour temperature 3000 K 2700 to 3000 K 4000 K
Height adjustable after installation Yes Yes No

Once the zone is identified, everything comes down to proportion and material. Our kitchen chandelier range can be sorted by room, colour, shape and bulb base, so you can check at a glance whether the model suits the table.

Which kitchen light: pendant, LED ceiling light or track?

The LED ceiling light covers the room, the pendant lights one zone, the track combines both and can be redirected. Start with the ceiling light for general lighting, then add a pendant above the table or island. This combination needs the fewest ceiling points.

Type What it lights When to choose it
Pendant One zone, in a cone Table, island, offset worktop
LED ceiling light The whole room, flat Small kitchen, low ceiling, general lighting
Track or adjustable spotlights Several directions Open-plan kitchen, changing uses

The LED ceiling light remains the simplest base: a single installation, even light, and the pendant then signs the table. In a white kitchen, this pair avoids the waiting-room effect produced by a single, very powerful central point.

For the blind spot near the tall units or the door, some add a kitchen floor lamp, also handy in a large through room.

Which light above a kitchen island?

Align two or three pendants along the length of the island, evenly spaced, rather than a single one in the middle. Each point covers about sixty centimetres of worktop, and the bulbs must be identical to avoid differences in tone. Beyond three points, the whole becomes visually cluttered.

Calculating the spacings, when the island is long or offset, is detailed in our method to balance several pendants above an island.

Which pendant above a rectangular table?

A linear pendant, or two to three small ones aligned on the same axis. The useful length is around two thirds of the table, and the light should not be wider than it. Above a 1.80 m table, two round pendants work better than a single one.

What are the kitchen lighting trends?

Natural materials and smoked glass dominate: rattan, linen, brushed brass, glass. Round or ball shapes are replacing conical shades. On the technical side, integrated LED and dimming are becoming standard. A look at our kitchen lighting trends shows the models that stand the test of time.

Which LED colour for a kitchen?

Stay between 2,700 K and 3,000 K. 2,700 K above the table flatters food and faces; 3,000 K on the worktop brings out textures. Above 4,000 K, the room becomes cold and tiring late in the evening.

Temperature Rendering Where to use it
2,700 K Warm, golden white Table, dining area, main pendant
3,000 K Warm neutral white Worktop, sink, under-cabinet lighting
4,000 K and above Cool white Pantry, utility room, garage

How many lumens for a kitchen?

Allow around 300 lumens per square metre, or nearly 3,600 lumens for 12 m². This total is split: two thirds in general lighting, one third over the work zones. A single pendant, however generous, never reaches that level. The detail by surface area is in our reference on how many lumens for a kitchen.

Which bulb for a kitchen?

The bulb base depends on the light, not the room: E27 for large pendants, GU10 for directional beams, G9 for small formats. Check dimming compatibility if the pendant is on a dimmer, and keep the same temperature from one point to the next. Our selection of kitchen bulbs covers the common bases, at the right temperature.

How to light a kitchen worktop?

Light from above, with the source in front of you and not behind you. A pendant 75 or 85 cm above the worktop, or an LED strip under the wall cabinet for the chopping zones. A broad beam is better than a concentrated point: otherwise it is your hands that cast a shadow on the board.

What height for a pendant above the worktop?

Measure the distance between the ceiling and the worktop, then subtract the desired drop: 75 to 85 cm for a worktop, 65 to 75 cm above a table. If your worktop is offset from the ceiling, remember to send us the measurements of your worktop: we will tell you which drop to use and how many points to install. It is the question that comes up most often in our advice.

Two habits avoid nasty surprises: an adjustable cable rather than a fixed rod, and a ceiling checked before drilling. The full procedure is described in our tutorial to install a pendant light on the ceiling.

How to light the worktop without a pendant?

The LED strip under the wall cabinet handles the chopping zones and the sink without touching the ceiling. Of the 127 LED wall lights for kitchens in our catalogue, as of 12 October 2026, the Kitchen room is stated on 98% of the listings: the wall light is therefore a documented option for accent lighting, not a stopgap.

  • LED strip: under the wall cabinet, for chopping and the sink.
  • Wall light: fixed above the worktop, when the ceiling is low.
  • Pendant: above the island or the table, drop set between 75 and 85 cm.

It is mounted above the worktop, facing downwards, and replaces the pendant where the ceiling lacks height. To put the whole together, a well-chosen kitchen light is better than three sources that contradict each other.

Hesitating over a model is normal: the Designix Google listing is public and can be checked before you decide.

Before ordering your kitchen LED pendant light

  • Measure the height between the worktop and the ceiling, then subtract 75 to 85 cm: that is your drop.
  • Count the useful points: one per task to light, two to three for an island or a large table.
  • Choose the temperature: 2700 to 3000 K above the table, 4000 K for general lighting.
  • Check the bulb base stated on the product page (E27, GU10, G9 or integrated LED) before adding bulbs.
  • Check the protection rating if the pendant is near a water point or an open window.
  • Check whether the drop is adjustable: that is what lets you adjust after installation, without taking everything down again.

Kitchen LED pendant light: the questions that keep coming up

Which LED colour for a kitchen?
3000 K above the worktop and the island: a warm neutral light that turns neither food nor wood blue. For the general lighting of a very white kitchen, go up to 4000 K, reserved for the work zones. Avoid 6500 K, which makes the room feel cold in the evening.
How many lumens are needed for a kitchen?
Allow around 300 lumens per m² for general lighting, and add a dedicated point above the worktop and the sink. For a room where you really cook, it is better to combine several sources than to push a single very powerful pendant.
What is the difference between a chandelier and a pendant light?
A chandelier has several arms or light points and is looked at as much as it lights; a pendant hangs from a single point, often by a cable, and lights a precise zone. Above a worktop, it is the pendant that does the work; above a table, both have their merits.
What are the drawbacks of LED lamps?
The light can be too cold if the temperature is poorly chosen, some bulbs are sensitive to dimmers and flicker, and an integrated LED is replaced with the whole light. Three points that are settled at the time of choice, not after installation.
How many watts is 3000 lumens?
Allow around 25 to 30 W on a good-quality LED, which delivers roughly 100 to 120 lumens per watt. As a reference, a halogen source needed far more power for the same flux: it is lumens, not watts, that you should compare.
