Glass kitchen pendant light: how to choose and install it

Choose clear glass for a compact kitchen, smoked glass under a light worktop, amber in a room that already has wood. Allow 70 to 80 cm between the pendant and the worktop, 75 to 85 cm above a table. Plan for an E27 or G9 socket so you can change the bulb without replacing the fixture.

Which glass pendant for a kitchen?

Clear glass suits small kitchens and dark worktops, smoked glass suits light kitchens you want to soften, amber suits wood interiors. The choice comes down first to the tint, then to the shape: a narrow bell above an island, a globe above a table.

A kitchen chandelier is chosen on three markers: the tint of the glass, the area to light and the drop height of the cable.

Which glass for which kitchen

Clear glass Smoked glass Amber glass
Light rendering Crisp, the bulb stays visible through the glass Softened, glare is cut Golden, it warms the whole room
Ideal kitchen Dark or windowless kitchen that needs brightening Very bright kitchen, full south or French windows White or light wood kitchen, a little cold
Decorative effect Airy, the glass almost disappears Graphic, strong contrast on a light background Warm, a definite vintage feel
Care Marks show, more frequent cleaning Marks show little Marks show little, the tint forgives
Common socket E27 or integrated LED E14 or G9 E27 filament

Clear glass pendant light: what effect?

Clear glass lets light through without filtering it. In a white kitchen, it avoids visual clutter; above a dark worktop, it brings the material back to life. In return, the bulb stays visible: a well-chosen filament does half the work.

A kitchen is planned zone by zone, and choosing your kitchen pendant by zone avoids the mistake of a single model placed in the centre.

Smoked glass pendant: for which kitchen?

Smoked glass softens the brightness. It suits light kitchens, white or beige worktops, and rooms where you dine in the evening under low light. It absorbs part of the output: better to choose a slightly more generous bulb than with clear glass. A smoked glass pendant also forgives fingerprints.

Amber and vintage glass pendant: what atmosphere?

The amber tint warms. Paired with brass or dark wood, it gives a golden light in the evening and stays understated when switched off. It is the tint for kitchens open to the living room, where the meal goes on.

  • Tint: clear to enlarge, smoked to soften, amber to warm
  • Shape: bell for an island, globe for a round table, tube for an alignment
  • Socket: E27 and E14 for classic bulbs, G9 and GU10 for small modules
  • Protection rating: IP20 is enough outside splash zones

Our glass lighting range has 2,875 references as of 12 October 2026, sorted by tint, shape and socket.

Which pendant above a rectangular table or an island?

Allow 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the pendant and the tabletop, 70 to 80 cm above a worktop. Over a rectangular table, one or two pieces aligned on the axis of the furniture are enough. Over a wide island, two or three evenly spaced points light better than one oversized central volume.

At what height should a pendant hang above a worktop?

Between 70 and 80 cm. Lower, your head bumps into the glass; higher, the light goes into the room and the worktop stays in shadow. The measurement is taken between the bottom of the fixture and the worktop, never between the ceiling and the cable.

The three-height method for kitchens rests on this principle: one light to see, one to work, one to host.

When the room combines table, worktop and walkway, each zone needs its own light point. That is the framework of a kitchen lighting project.

How many pendants above a wide island?

Two or three, never a single centred piece. The spacing is distributed along the length of the worktop, not its width. A large-diameter pendant light does not replace two closely spaced points: the shadow returns in the middle.

Distributing several pendants above an island above all calls for a clean alignment, judged from the entrance of the room.

How do you offset a pendant when the electrical point is off-centre?

You offset at the cable, not at the ceiling. A wide canopy and an adjustable cable absorb a few centimetres of difference between the electrical supply and the centre of the furniture. When the offset is larger, an extra pendant without drilling settles the matter without reopening the ceiling.

Check your glass pendant before ordering

  • Check the clear height between the bottom of the glass and the worktop
  • Measure the width of the island or table before choosing the number of points
  • Choose the tint according to the real light of the room, not the photo on the site
  • Check the protection rating if the pendant is near the sink or the window
  • Check the socket and the wattage of the planned bulb
  • Plan for a dimmer if the kitchen also serves as a dining room

How do you clean a glass light fixture?

A slightly damp microfibre cloth, once a week. Against grease, a drop of washing-up liquid in warm water, then dry immediately: hard water leaves marks and dulls the tint of the glass.

The weekly gesture: wipe rather than wash

Glass gets dirty slowly, but it shows everything. A quick pass over the bell and the bottom of the fixture prevents the greasy film from baking on with the heat. Switch off the power, or wait for it to cool, before touching the bulb. A glass lamp wiped regularly keeps its transparency.

Grease and steam: which protection rating to plan for?

From a survey of 126 glass references in our catalogue as of 12 October 2026, 83% declare IP20, 5% IP44 and 8% IP65. The 2-year warranty is declared on 88% of the same survey. Most of the glass is therefore intended for dry air, to be placed away from hobs and the sink.

Rating What it protects against Where to place it
IP20 No protection against water Above a table, outside the cooking zone
IP44 Water splashes Near a sink, in an open kitchen
IP54 Dust and splashes Cooking zone, busy room
IP65 Dust and water jets Directly next to the sink

Products to avoid on glass

  • Ammonia-based: attacks varnishes and leaves rings
  • Alcohol and solvents: dull tinted glass
  • Abrasive sponges: scratch the surface, even if they degrease quickly
  • Very hard water: better to dry than to rinse

Glass pendant or ceiling light for the kitchen?

The pendant lights a precise zone, the table or the island, and becomes the strong point of the room. The ceiling light lights widely and stays near the ceiling: it takes over when height is lacking or when the kitchen must stay clear.

What the pendant brings

It comes down into the field of vision, so it lights the worktop without glare. It also gives rhythm to the room: two or three aligned volumes draw a line, a single large volume creates a centre. Words matter, and distinguishing a chandelier from a pendant avoids buying a fixture that hangs too low over a walkway.

What the ceiling light settles

It lights widely, without cast shadow, and frees the view. In a small kitchen, it is often the only option that lets cabinet doors open. A flat LED ceiling light is surface-mounted, a few centimetres from the ceiling, and cleans in one wipe.

In an open room, the combination works well: a dining room chandelier above the table, a ceiling light over the kitchen area.

And if the ceiling is low?

A pendant above a walkway becomes an obstacle. Keep it above the table, where nobody walks upright, and complete with lower sources: wall lights, under-cabinet strips, recessed spotlights.

Frequently asked questions about glass kitchen pendants

What is the ideal height to hang a chandelier above a table?
Allow 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the fixture and the tabletop, and 70 to 80 cm above a worktop or island. These measurements keep the view clear and prevent bumping your head when leaning over.
How do you clean a glass light fixture?
A slightly damp microfibre cloth, then a dry wipe to avoid marks. In the kitchen, a drop of washing-up liquid is enough for grease; no alcohol or abrasive product on tinted glass.
What is the difference between a chandelier and a pendant?
A pendant hangs from a single cable or rod and often carries a single light source; a chandelier brings together several light points around a central structure. In the kitchen, the pendant is more readily placed in a line above the worktop.
Which chandelier should you put in a kitchen?
A compact model, with simple glass rather than drops, placed above the island or the table and never in the walkway. From a survey of 126 glass references in our catalogue as of 12 October 2026, 83% declare IP20: keep it away from the sink.
What are the pendant trends for 2026?
Glass is back in bell and tube shapes, in smoked or amber tints rather than crystal. Simple formats, a single glass per pendant, hold up better above a kitchen than a busy assembly.
