Bedroom table lamp: the right light, in the right place

Start with the use: a reading table lamp needs an opaque shade angled towards the book, while an ambient lamp needs a fabric or tinted glass diffuser. Then measure your bedside table and the height of your eyes when seated, and choose the socket and a bulb around 2700 K.

Which table lamp for a bedroom?

Three uses decide the model: reading, falling asleep, lighting the room. For reading, an opaque shade about 25 cm in diameter and a 400 to 500 lumen bulb. For ambience, a fabric or glass diffuser, a bulb close to 2700 K and a dimmer.

Which table lamp, for which spot in the bedroom?

Bedside table Dresser or vanity On the floor
What it lights The page or the phone, never the eyes The wall and the room, in soft light The lower wall and the floor, indirectly
Shade position relative to the seated eye Below the eye At or above eye level Clearly below the eye
Most common socket E14 or E27 E27 E27
Shade shape that works Small, opaque or translucent Medium to large, open at the bottom Tall and closed, directional
Dimmer Useful for falling asleep Useful for dimming in the evening Useful for ambience alone
When to choose it One on each side of the bed When the bedside is already taken Bedroom without a ceiling light or a reading corner

Bedroom lighting rarely comes down to a single light point. When the room has only one badly placed socket or a narrow bedside, the simplest approach is to start from measurements: our bedroom lighting project service frames the whole thing from a plan and a photo.

Once the use is identified, the choice narrows: the bedroom lamp collection gathers models ready to place, with their socket and bulb temperature.

How to choose a bedside lamp?

  • Height: the shade should be level with the seated eye, about 50 to 60 cm above the mattress.
  • Shape: a conical shade concentrates light towards the book, a fabric cylinder diffuses it into the room.
  • Socket: E14 on a small base, E27 on a wider model.
  • Dimmer: decisive if the same lamp is used for reading and then for falling asleep.

To read in bed without disturbing the person next to you, an adjustable reading lamp does better than an ambient model, whose light goes in every direction.

What type of lighting for a bedroom?

Two or three sources are better than a single ceiling light. Warm light around 2700 K, low sources and a more direct point for reading cover every moment of the day. The details of ambiences are in our article on bedroom lighting conducive to rest.

Where to place a table lamp in a bedroom?

On a bedside table, the shade is level with the seated eye: allow 50 to 60 cm above the mattress. On the floor, a table lamp slips into a free corner, 30 or 40 cm from the wall, so the halo is not cut by the partition.

At what height should a lamp be placed on a bedside table?

  • 50 to 60 cm above the mattress: the bottom of the shade reaches eye level.
  • 15 cm minimum gap from the wall, to let the bulb breathe.
  • The base visible: if the shade hides the alarm clock, the lamp is too high.

A model that is too low casts the shadow of your head on the page. On a narrow table, a small base or a bedside lamp fixed to the wall is better, as it frees up the whole surface.

The width of the top matters as much as the height: our guide to choosing a bedside lamp details the formats according to the space available.

Where to place a floor table lamp in the bedroom?

In a free corner, near an armchair or a reading corner, never in front of a closet door. A floor lamp with an adjustable shade lights an armchair without a ceiling light, and moves the day the room is reorganised. If the ceiling stays bare, a bedroom chandelier with a dimmer completes the setup.

Table lamp or wall light in a bedroom?

The wall light frees the bedside and suits small bedrooms; the table lamp moves around and follows your mood. On a survey of 134 references from our Bedroom Wall Light collection on 12 October 2026, the G9 socket comes first at 28%, ahead of E27 at 25% and E14 at 19%, and 99% of the records surveyed are IP20: these lights are for dry interiors, not a damp room.

Table lamp Wall light Ceiling light or chandelier
Space taken The bedside top None None
Wiring None, existing socket Chasing and repainting Ceiling supply
Ideal use Reading and ambience Reading, small spaces General lighting
Good to know Moves, can be replaced Fixed position Does not replace a low point

A survey of 134 references says nothing about the 7880 models in the collection: it gives a trend, not a rule. On declared warranties, 42% carry 5 years and 54% carry 2 years, which leaves real room for choice over time.

When the wall light replaces the table lamp

As soon as the bedside table is less than 35 cm wide, or when two sleepers share a single socket. An adult bedroom wall light with a built-in switch saves getting up to turn it off, and its adjustable arm comes down above the book.

What a wall light requires in terms of work

A chase, a power point at bedside height and repainting. If the wall is concrete or already wallpapered, the table lamp remains the simplest option. On this kind of trade-off, the Designix Google listing and its public reviews show how other projects have been handled.

Which bulb for a bedroom table lamp?

Aim for 400 to 500 lumens and 2700 K for a bedside. The socket follows the base: E14 on small models, E27 on larger ones, G9 on adjustable lights. A dimmer brings more comfort than a more powerful bulb.

Warm or cool: which temperature for a bedroom?

Around 2700 K for the evening, 3000 K acceptable for reading, above 4000 K the light leans blue and delays falling asleep. Warm white makes wood and textiles softer, which matters in a room where you spend time doing nothing. Our article on the bulb for a bedroom details temperatures according to use.

Quantity matters too: the number of lumens for a bedroom is calculated by zones, not at a single point. Too much light on the ceiling overwhelms the low sources and tires the eye.

A fabric, smoked glass or linen shade changes the final tint as much as the bulb. If you are redoing the whole room, it is better to frame the design light before buying the bulbs, to stay consistent from one point to another.

E14, E27 or G9 socket?

  • E14: small thread, compact bedside lamps, moderate wattages.
  • E27: wide thread, bigger and brighter bulbs, dimmers easy to find.
  • G9: pins, very common on adjustable lights and small volumes.
  • Integrated LED: nothing to change, but the bulb cannot be replaced.

If your bedside is too narrow or the room has only one socket, start from your measurements rather than a model: you can write to us with a photo, and we will frame the bedroom lighting project.

Adult bedroom, child's bedroom: what changes

In an adult bedroom, priority goes to the dimmer and the material; in a child's bedroom, to the stability of the base, the colour temperature and the absence of trailing cables.

Adult bedroom: material and dimmer first

A metal, ceramic or glass base, a linen or cotton shade, and an intensity that goes down low. Trendy table lamp models play on organic shapes and natural tones, but it is the dimmer that changes daily life: reading at full power, switching off gently.

Child's bedroom: safety and soft light

A wide, heavy base withstands knocks better, a closed shade avoids direct contact with the bulb, and a low-consumption LED bulb gives off little heat. Stay below 2700 K so as not to disturb sleep, and prefer a switch within reach from the bed.

In your bedroom, what is this table lamp mainly for?

Checks before buying your table lamp

  • Sitting in bed, check that the shade hides the bulb: it is the only test that matters for reading without glare
  • Measure the width of the bedside and the height of the headboard wall before setting a lamp height
  • Choose the socket before the shape: E14, E27 and G9 are not interchangeable from one model to another
  • Plan for a dimmable bulb if the room also serves as a reading corner
  • Locate the socket: a cord running behind the bed base unplugs itself
  • In a child's bedroom, weight or fix the base: a table lamp tips over

Frequently asked questions about the bedroom table lamp

How to choose a bedside lamp?
Start from the use: reading calls for an opaque shade that comes down below the seated eye, falling asleep calls for warm, dimmable light. Only then adjust the size to the bedside and the socket to the bulb you want.
What type of lighting for a bedroom?
Warm light, around 2700 K, spread out rather than concentrated on one point. One table lamp on each side of the bed, plus a low source if the room is large, is enough to cover reading and ambience without turning on the ceiling light.
Which table lamp for a child's bedroom?
A stable model, with a wide enough or fixed base, and a bulb that does not heat up. The shade must be closed at the bottom so that a child lying down never sees the bulb directly, and the switch must stay within reach from the bed.
Can a table lamp be placed on the floor in a bedroom?
Yes, provided it lights upwards or towards the wall and not straight ahead: a floor source facing the bed tires the eyes. It then serves as ambience, alongside a small reading lamp on the bedside.
Do you need a dimmable table lamp in a bedroom?
It is not compulsory, but it is the setting that is used most: the same lamp goes from reading to sleep light. Both the bulb and the light must be dimmer-compatible, otherwise dimming stutters or buzzes.
