Fix the strip under the stair nosing or along the stringer, connect it to its sensor: the staircase lights up as you pass, then turns itself off. The models shown here are LED strips in black aluminium profile, IP20, for indoor staircases.
What is a motion sensor LED strip light for stairs?
It is an LED strip fixed along the steps or the stringer, connected to a sensor that switches the staircase on as soon as someone enters its detection range. The light turns itself off after you pass. The models in this collection are in black aluminium, IP20, for indoor staircases, in 24 V or 220 V.
LED strip with motion sensor for stairs
The principle comes down to two moments. You go up, the infrared sensor detects the movement and the strip lights up. Once you have passed the last step, the light goes out. Across the range of LED strips, the strip slides into a black aluminium profile, facing downwards: the light falls on the next step, without glare and without waking the floor above.
Motion sensor LED strip for stairs: when the light comes on
The sensor reacts as soon as you enter its range, usually at the foot of the stairs or on the first step. The light stays indirect: you see the step outlined, not the individual points of light. The five-year warranty advertised on these models covers the whole product. For the rest of the house, browse the Designix lighting catalogue.
Which motion sensor LED strip light should you choose for a staircase?
The choice comes down to three points. Power first: a 24 V strip runs through a transformer, a 220 V strip connects directly. Protection next: this selection is IP20, so for a dry indoor staircase. Light colour last, in 2700 K, 3000 K, RGB or RGBW.
24 V or 220 V: how to choose the power supply
A 24 V strip powers a long run from a single point, with a transformer tucked away in a cupboard or under the landing. The 24 V strips with remote power supply suit winding staircases. Conversely, a strip that connects at 220 V avoids a visible transformer when the socket or cable outlet is nearby. The wiring differs, the light produced is the same.
IP20, aluminium, length: the criteria that matter
The IP20 rating means dry room: perfect under a step, sheltered from splashes. For a damp cellar or around a pool, you need waterproof models for damp rooms, and for true outdoor use, look instead at pool lighting. On colour, a warm white at 2700 K and the 3000 K version cover most interiors, while RGB ambient LED strips and an RGBW strip with dedicated white open up controllable colour.

Where should you fit the LED strip on a staircase: step, nosing or stringer?
The strip is fitted under the stair nosing, along the full length, to light the next step with indirect light. The stringer or handrail takes a surface-mounted fitting, more discreet in profile, which highlights the line of the staircase rather than each step. The two positions can be combined.
Strip under the stair nosing
Under the nosing, the strip is invisible as you go up: you only perceive the halo on the step below. The black aluminium profile protects the strip from feet rubbing against it and keeps the line perfectly straight. This is the most common fitting in an indoor staircase, and the one that marks each step without lighting the whole floor above.
Strip along the stringer or handrail
On the stringer, the strip lights at a grazing angle and draws the slope of the staircase. The effect is more graphic, less functional. The sensor strip is enough to make climbing the steps safe; a ceiling light or wall light becomes useful to light the landing or hallway more broadly, and you will find them in all our lighting.
How do you install a motion sensor LED strip light on a staircase?
First mark the cable route, then fix the profile and the strip, and connect the sensor and power supply with the power off. 24 V requires a transformer, 220 V comes straight from the mains. Clean the surface before sticking: aluminium holds better on a clean, dry surface.
Wiring and powering the strip
Locate the trunking or the chase before fixing anything, then run the power supply to the entry point. At 24 V, the transformer is tucked away nearby, under the landing or in a cupboard. At 220 V, the connection is made to the mains. In both cases, switch off the power at the breaker and check the connections are tight before switching back on.
Fixing the LED strip without damaging the step
Dust and degrease the underside of the step, fit the aluminium profile, then unroll the strip without bending it. A badly stuck strip comes loose after a few months, especially on a stair nosing. Then test the detection before closing up: a clear step is better than a cable to redo.
How do you match the staircase with the living room, kitchen or entrance?
A staircase reads together with the room it leads into. If the living room or entrance is at 2700 K, the strip keeps the same tone; in a kitchen, 3000 K makes the worktop easier to read. One single family of white in the field of view, and the whole stays consistent.
Which light colour for the living room when the staircase leads into it
Stay within one family: 2700 K for a living room that feels warm in the evening, 3000 K if the room also serves as a passage. An RGB or RGBW strip lets you vary without changing the light fitting. To extend the line of the staircase above a table or a landing, the Rubana luminous strip pendant picks up the same language: black aluminium, LED, IP20, 31 W, a 60 cm diameter and an adjustable height from 45.7 cm to 325.7 cm. It also comes in an RGBW strip with dedicated white version, handy for alternating.
Open staircase onto a modern kitchen decor
When the staircase lands in an open room, the kitchen often calls for a slightly crisper white. A 3000 K for entrance and kitchen under the worktop matches a staircase strip at 3000 K. For a consistent modern kitchen decor, keep the same temperature from the landing down to the base units, and reserve colour for ambient areas only, such as strips designed for the living room.
How do you adjust and maintain a motion sensor on a staircase?
A sensor is adjusted on three parameters: range, delay and brightness threshold. The range covers the first step, the delay allows time to climb, the threshold prevents it switching on in broad daylight. A dry cloth is enough to maintain the strip.
Adjusting the sensor range and delay
Set the range so the sensor triggers at the foot of the stairs, without picking up movement in the neighbouring hallway. The delay is set to the actual climbing time: too short, the light goes out halfway; too long, it stays on for nothing. The brightness threshold prevents it switching on during the day. These three settings are made once, then checked from time to time.
Cleaning and making the LED strip last
A dry cloth on the strip and on the sensor lens is enough. A build-up of dust on the lens makes detection less reliable. Also check the profile fixing once a year, especially on a heavily used stair nosing. To extend through the house, the LED strip universe covers the other rooms, and our lighting section completes the whole.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: you order the strip, the sensor and the power supply in one place, and you keep a contact if a setting proves tricky. Start by choosing your voltage (24 V or 220 V) and your colour temperature: the rest follows.
Frequently asked questions
Which outdoor LED light has a motion sensor?
In this collection, the strips are IP20: they are intended for indoor use, in dry rooms. For outdoor use or a damp area, go for a waterproof strip and check the protection rating shown on the model's product page before buying.
What is the colour difference between LEDs?
The difference comes down to colour temperature. A 2700 K strip gives a warm white, close to a classic bulb; a 3000 K stays warm but a little crisper. The RGB and RGBW versions add controllable colours, and RGBW also keeps a dedicated white.
How do you install a motion sensor LED strip light on a staircase?
First fix the strip under the stair nosing or along the stringer, then connect the sensor and the power supply. 24 V runs through a transformer, 220 V connects to the mains. The work is done with the power off, and the aluminium profile protects the strip.
Can you fit an LED strip on a stair nosing?
Yes, it is the most common fitting on a staircase: the strip slides under the stair nosing and lights the next step. The light stays indirect, you do not see the points of light, and each step is marked as you pass.
Can an indoor staircase wall light complement an LED strip?
Yes. The strip marks the steps, the wall light illuminates the wall or the landing. The two combine well if they share the same colour temperature, 2700 K or 3000 K. Check the protection rating: IP20 is enough on a dry indoor staircase.
