Plan on one linen table lamp per piece of furniture to light: bedside table, sideboard, desk, hallway. The textile shade filters the light and removes the direct bright point, which makes reading comfortable and prevents glare when you work right next to it. The whole selection uses an E27 base, IP20, with a base in metal, steel, stone or woven bamboo depending on the style.
What kind of light does a linen table lamp give?
Linen filters the light: the textile shade spreads a soft halo, with no visible bright point, which limits glare near a bed or a sofa. The E27 base leaves the choice of bulb, up to 40 W, and the gold inner lining of some models warms the tone of the room.
Linen table lamp: a soft light near the bed
A linen table lamp does not light a whole room: it lights what is in front of you, a book, a notebook, a glass, and leaves the rest in a soft half-light. That is exactly what you want at the bedside, where an overhead light that is too direct tires the eyes in the evening. The light goes downwards, bounces off the furniture and rises along the wall.
E27 base: which bulb should you use in a linen lamp?
The E27 base is fitted on every model. The stated power goes up to 40 W per lamp, which leaves room for a filament bulb as well as a low-energy bulb. Part of the range is marked LED compatible: compare with our designer LED table lamps if you want a crisp, economical result. To aim the beam at a work surface rather than at the wall, look at our adjustable lamps.
Where should you place a linen table lamp at home?
The bedroom is the most common room, followed by the living room, then the office, the dining room and the hallway. On a bedside table, a compact size is enough; on a sideboard or a desk, a taller model puts the light above the work surface or the book.
In the bedroom: bedside and reading light
A bedside lamp needs a narrow base that does not eat up the surface of the table and a shade that comes down low enough not to shine straight into your face when you are sitting. The Sélune with its teardrop linen shade plays that role with a tight halo, for a clear reading corridor. The rest of the room comes together in our table lamps for the bedroom.
In the living room and office: accent light rather than general lighting
On a sideboard or a console, the lamp acts as a low source that structures the corner without rising to the ceiling. The Ambry with its rectangular base fills that role with its 30 cm diameter, 55 cm high shade. In an office, a side accent light is better than frontal lighting, to be found in our desk table lamps, and completed with a look through our lighting catalogue to balance the room.
How do you choose your linen table lamp?
Three criteria decide it: the material of the base, the shape of the shade and the colour. Black metal, brushed steel, travertine stone or woven bamboo change the silhouette; a round, teardrop, ball or original shape shade changes the diffusion; black, beige, white and gold should answer to the furniture that carries the lamp.
Metal, steel, stone or bamboo base: what the base changes
A metal or brushed steel base stays slim and sets a clear contrast with the textile: the lamp reads as a vertical line. Travertine stone, veined and more massive, anchors the lamp on a light piece of furniture and throws a warm light as it passes. Woven bamboo brings a texture and lets the light filter around the lamp, as on the Bohlia in woven bamboo, supplied with a dimmer.
Round, teardrop, ball: which table lamp shape should you choose?
The round shape is the most common in the selection: wide, even halo, at ease at the bedside as well as on a dining room. The teardrop concentrates the light downwards and suits reading. The ball spreads the light all around and works in a hallway or a corner of the living room. Gold and black finishes are gathered in our gold and black finishes, light tones in our white table lamps.
| Shape | What the eye perceives | Room it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Cylindrical | Flux directed upwards and downwards | Office, sideboard |
| Teardrop | Tight halo, low light | Bedside |
| Round | Wide, even halo | Bedside, dining room |
| Ball | Light spread all around | Hallway, living room corner |
Italian design table lamp: which styles come close?
The models that evoke Italian design play on simple volumes and clear contrasts: cylindrical shade with gold inner lining, matte black base, or conical travertine stone base paired with a linen shade. The lines stay graphic, the light stays warm and never harsh.
Cylindrical shade with gold inner lining
The contrast between a dark outside and a gold inside warms the tone of the light without any special bulb. The Dulcina with gold inner lining plays that role at 20 cm, a bedside size, and the Sereina takes up the principle in a taller volume, for a sideboard or a desk.
Travertine and linen: natural stone and textile combined
The conical travertine stone base and the light linen shade form a material duo that holds up without any extra decoration. The Velnorilo in travertine and linen measures 49 cm high and has a dimmer, useful for going from a reading light to an ambient light. For a more sparkling effect, our crystal models take over.
Which table lamp size should you choose for each room?
Height is chosen in relation to the furniture: up to 30 cm for a bedside table or a small desk, 37 to 49 cm for a hallway or a sideboard, and around 50 to 55 cm for a large living room piece or a wide desk. The shade should reach eye level when you are seated.
Small sizes up to 30 cm: bedside and narrow desk
These heights sit without hiding the surface. The Dulcina measures 20 cm, the Sélune 25 cm, the Vespaire 25 cm, the Travino Compact 24.5 cm and the Bohlia 25 cm for a 22.5 cm diameter. The Sereina completes the series with a 30 cm shade. Bedroom models are gathered in our table lamps for the bedroom.
Large sizes from 49 to 55 cm: sideboard and living room corner
Beyond 45 cm, the lamp becomes a visual landmark and lights a wide surface. The Velnorilo goes up to 49 cm, the Ambry to 55 cm for a 30 cm diameter, the Alvelia and the Orivesella to 50 cm. On a low piece of furniture, keep the proportion: the lamp should read above the furniture without hiding it. See our modern living room lamps and our metal bases for the office.
| Size | Recommended room | Base | Example model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact 20 to 25 cm | Bedside table, small desk | Black metal | Dulcina, Sélune, Vespaire |
| Medium 24.5 to 30 cm | Bedside, hallway, dining room | Travertine, woven bamboo | Travino Compact, Bohlia, Sereina |
| Large 49 to 55 cm | Sideboard, wide desk, living room corner | Travertine, steel, metal | Velnorilo, Ambry, Alvelia |
How do you wire several lamps to a single power supply?
Several table lamps are wired in parallel on the same supply: each socket receives the live and the neutral, and a single switch cuts the whole set. You add up the bulb wattages to stay within the circuit limit, and the connection at the consumer unit is left to an electrician.
Wiring several lamps in parallel rather than in series
In parallel, each lamp keeps the same voltage and a blown bulb does not switch off the others. The cable starts from the supply, feeds each socket and comes back: the terminals are picked up one after another. A terminal block or connectors suited to the cable cross-section prevent fragile splices behind a piece of furniture.
Wiring 3 lamps to 1 switch: what you need to check
In this selection, the stated power is 40 W per lamp. Add up the bulbs you plan to use and compare with the rating of the circuit before wiring everything. The switch goes upstream, on the live wire. For desk setups, complete with our black desk lamps or our modern desk lamps.
How do you care for a linen shade and change the bulb?
A linen shade is dusted dry, with a soft brush or a vacuum on the lowest setting, with no water or product on the textile. To change the bulb, switch off the power, let the E27 socket cool, then screw in the new bulb without forcing, before adjusting the dimmer.
Dusting linen without staining it
A soft brush or the brush nozzle of a vacuum, on the lowest power, is enough to remove dust without marking the fibre. Water, even slightly soapy, leaves rings on taut linen. Keep the lamp away from a direct steam source to prevent the textile from sagging. The understated style is found in our Scandinavian style lamps.
Replacing an E27 bulb and adjusting the dimmer
Switch off the power at the breaker before touching the socket, let it cool, then unscrew. An E27 bulb is screwed in by hand, without forcing: too much turning damages the base. On models with a dimmer, turn it up gradually to check that the chosen bulb responds well. The two-year warranty covers the whole selection, including the Bohlia in woven bamboo.
Frequently asked questions about linen table lamps
How do you wire several lamps in parallel?
You start from the shared supply: live and neutral are picked up on each socket, which places the lamps side by side rather than one behind the other. This setup keeps the same voltage on each lamp and prevents a blown bulb from switching off the others.
How do you wire 3 lamps to 1 switch?
The three lamps are wired in parallel and the switch is placed upstream, on the live wire. You add up the bulb wattages to stay within the circuit limit, use a suitable terminal block, and the connection at the consumer unit is carried out or approved by an electrician.
How should you arrange ceiling spotlights?
You spread the spotlights evenly in relation to the walls and furniture, avoiding placing them too close to the walls so as not to create shadow areas. A linen table lamp usefully completes this lighting, bringing a diffuse accent light where the spotlights light in a directed way.
Floor lamps or table lamps: how do you combine them?
A floor lamp lights a corner of a room widely from the floor, while a table lamp is reserved for a specific piece of furniture: bedside, sideboard, desk, hallway. In the same room, avoid lighting the same spot twice and keep different source heights.
What is a designer ball table lamp?
It is a spherical lamp, whose light spreads all around rather than downwards. It suits a hallway or a corner of the living room, on a piece of furniture or on the floor. In this collection, the Bohlia takes that shape, in black and natural woven bamboo, with a dimmer.
A salt lamp or a linen table lamp: which light should you choose?
A salt lamp gives off an amber light, very localised and with a short reach, used mainly for atmosphere. A linen shade gives a more even, discreet light, suited to reading and to time spent near the lamp, on an E27 base and up to 40 W depending on the model.
A Balinese wall light or a table lamp in woven material?
A woven wall light requires a fixing and a supply on the wall, whereas a table lamp can be moved and plugged into a socket. The woven material look is found here with the Bohlia, in black and natural woven bamboo, placed on a piece of furniture, with no work needed.
Choosing and ordering your linen table lamp
Decide on the room first, then the height: a compact size at the bedside, a large size on a sideboard. The E27 base, the IP20 rating and the dimmer found on some models can be checked on each product page, which avoids a return after delivery. Once the size is confirmed, you can compare silhouettes in our accent lighting for the living room or our black lamps in a modern style.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, possible returns and Designix customer service for any question about a size or a base: you order with no risk and install the lamp as soon as it arrives.
