IP65 LED strip lights are chosen on three criteria: the protection rating, the profile length and the colour temperature. Start by confirming that the room is damp or dusty, then pick the length that covers the area to be lit, then the colour that suits the use.
What is an IP65 LED strip light and which rooms is it for?
An IP65 LED strip light is a rigid light bar protected against dust and water jets. It is installed on the ceiling or wall of a bathroom, kitchen, garage, workshop or porch, where an ordinary strip light would fear damp and splashes.
Where to place a waterproof LED strip light: ceiling, wall or under-cabinet?
The ceiling suits large surfaces to be covered in one go, such as a garage or workshop: the light falls flat on the work surfaces. The wall is for narrow circulation areas and mirrors. Under-cabinet solves the problem of shadows cast in front of the sink or hob, with a short module. Waterproof LED strip lights cover all three positions, provided the fixing intended by the profile is respected.
Why the protection rating changes everything in the kitchen and bathroom
In these two rooms, water arrives as droplets and steam, and grease settles. A profile sealed with a gasket can be wiped clean without damp reaching the components. This is the criterion that separates a durable module from one that flickers after a year; for mounting above the mirror, see the models designed for the bathroom.
What does IP65 protection mean in a bathroom?
IP stands for ingress protection. The first digit, 6, indicates total dust-tightness; the second, 5, resistance to low-pressure water jets from all directions. An IP65 strip light therefore withstands bathroom splashes, but is not meant to be immersed in water.
Do you need IP65 or IP44 above a bathtub?
The closer you get to the bathtub or shower, the higher the protection must be. IP44 stops splashes but lets fine dust through; IP65 closes both fronts. Above a mirror or bathroom cabinet, IP65 is the comfortable choice, and the exact position should be confirmed with an electrician. The rest of the home is covered by the full range of LED strip lights, with no damp constraint.
What IP65 does not protect against: immersion and prolonged steam
IP65 does not mean waterproof at depth: a strip light dropped in water or placed in a room continuously saturated with steam will eventually weaken. The gasket protects against splashes, not against permanent running water. In a hammam or a very damp room, keep a margin and move the module away from the water point. For mirror lighting in a damp room, a short module in warm white remains the easiest to live with.
Which length to choose between an IP65 LED strip light 60 cm and 120 cm?
It all depends on the surface to be lit and the shape of the room. A 60 cm module suits a small storage room, a cupboard or a worktop; a 120 cm model covers a garage, a workshop or a wide corridor, spreading the light better and limiting dark areas.
IP65 LED strip light 120 cm: how to read the lumens, watts and kelvins on the label
Watts indicate consumption, not the amount of light: the luminous flux in lumens is what counts. Kelvins give the colour. Beware of a label that claims a lot of watts for very few lumens; the gap often reveals a data entry error. An LED strip light designed for 220 V connects directly to the mains, with no separate driver to house.
Can several strip lights be placed end to end to extend the light line?
Yes, provided the alignment and the circuit capacity are respected. Two short modules aligned often work better than a single long one in an L-shaped room, because you follow the shape of the wall. Measure the total available length before ordering, and keep the connectors accessible. The rest of the range can be explored in our lighting catalogue.
| Criterion | 60 cm | 120 cm |
|---|---|---|
| Typical rooms | Cupboard, storage room, under-cabinet, mirror | Garage, workshop, wide corridor |
| Light distribution | Concentrated on a short area | More even over a large surface |
| Installation | Point fixing, few drill holes | Solid support, alignment to check |
| Combining | Several modules to extend the line | One module is often enough |
What is the best LED strip light for a garage, a workshop or a kitchen?
There is no single best model: for a garage or workshop, you want a long strip light, fixed to the ceiling, in neutral white, that lights the work surfaces evenly. In the kitchen, a short module under the wall units, in warm white, is preferred, protected enough to withstand steam and splashes.
In a garage, the fixing height decides the result: a module placed too high leaves shadow areas under the open bonnet. Two modules parallel to the length of the room work better than a single offset one. For a workshop, sanding dust means regularly dusting the diffuser, otherwise the light drops without anything being broken. See the solutions for lighting a garage and the strip lights for workshops, all of which are ceiling-mounted.
Waterproof IP65 LED strip lights or standard LED strip light: which for outdoors?
Outdoors, only a model with a suitable protection rating lasts: an IP65 strip light resists splashes and dust under a porch, a covered entrance or a covered terrace. A standard strip light fears damp and running water, and is reserved for dry rooms.
Outdoor LED strip light: what sets it apart from a ceiling strip light
The gasket, the profile material and the fixing vary from one reference to another. The 212 IP65 LED strip lights in the collection are compared on these three points before purchase, and outdoor lighting should therefore be considered from the selection stage, not at the time of installation.
Can an IP65 strip light be installed in an unheated room?
Yes: IP65 concerns dust and water, not cold. Check the operating temperature range shown on the product label, as some modules do not like prolonged frost. Under a porch or in an unheated garage, the waterproof version remains the safest.
How to match the light of an LED strip light to each room?
Colour temperature changes the atmosphere more than power does. A warm white around 3000 K relaxes a bathroom; a neutral white around 4000 K stays faithful for cooking and DIY; a cool white around 6000 K suits garages and circulation areas, where contrast is wanted.
On the packaging, look for the value in kelvins rather than the words: 3000 K, 4000 K, 6000 K are the three common references. The same luminaire offered in these three shades does not light the same room in the same way. The diffuser matters as much as the colour: an opal diffuser softens the light and prevents glare when the module is placed close to the eye, under a wall unit for example. Compare the available shades in the lighting range and in the LED strip light range.
| Room or use | Preferred format | Protection rating | Colour temperature | Point of vigilance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bathroom | Short module, on the wall or above the mirror | IP65 | Warm white 3000 K | Gasket properly clipped, no immersion |
| Kitchen, worktop | Short module under the wall units | IP65 | Neutral white 4000 K | Steam and splashes, washable diffuser |
| Garage | Long module on the ceiling | IP65 | Neutral to cool white | Fixing height and evenness |
| Workshop | Several modules aligned on the ceiling | IP65 | Neutral white 4000 K | Sanding dust, regular dusting |
| Corridor, staircase | Short module with sensor | IP65 if damp room | Neutral white | Sensor range and delay |
| Sheltered outdoor | Waterproof module under a porch or covered entrance | IP65 | Neutral to cool white | Fixing away from direct running water |
How to install and maintain an IP65 LED strip light?
First fix the brackets or clips to the support, connect the power supply, then clip on the profile and check the sealing gasket. Maintenance is limited to dusting the diffuser with a soft cloth and checking that the gasket is neither pinched nor detached after each intervention.
220 V LED strip light: what to check before connecting
Switch off the circuit at the consumer unit, identify the conductors, and check that the module is indeed designed for the mains. A 220 V model houses its driver in the profile, with no transformer to fit in a false ceiling. If the circuit is not provided or if any doubt remains, call an electrician. Other 220 V models and waterproof versions are installed in the same way.
Cuttable LED tape: how does it work and how does it differ from a strip light?
A cuttable tape is cut at the marks every few modules, then connected to a connector. It is a flexible, thin product that follows a curve and hides behind a profile. A strip light, on the other hand, is rigid: it is screwed on, resists water jets and suits damp rooms. A garage is better served by a strip light than by tape.
IP65 LED strip light with motion sensor: for which uses?
The sensor switches the strip light on when someone passes and off after an adjustable time: handy in a corridor, staircase, garage or technical room where your hands are not free. Choose an IP65 model if the room is damp, and check the power supply type, mains or battery.
Mains sensor or rechargeable strip light: which to choose?
On mains power, the module never runs out of battery and withstands intensive use; an electrical supply is needed nearby. Rechargeable, it can be placed anywhere without wiring, which suits a cupboard or a cellar without a socket. Rechargeable versions do, however, require regular charging, to be included in the time budget.
Where to place the sensor so it does not switch on for nothing?
Aim the head towards the circulation area, not towards a window or a radiator whose heat triggers the switch-on. Set a short delay in a corridor, longer on a staircase. Strip lights with sensor are adjusted this way, and a sensor powered at 220 V avoids the question of recharging.
Frequently asked questions
Can an IP65 LED strip light be installed in a bathroom?
Yes, that is one of its uses: IP65 protects it from dust and water jets. It is fixed to the wall or ceiling, away from immersion. Avoid placing it in the direct jet of the shower and have the electrical connection made by a professional.
IP65 kitchen LED strip light: where to place it?
Most often under the wall units, above the worktop, to light hands and food without cast shadows. A short module in neutral white is enough; IP65 really counts near the sink and the hob, where splashes are frequent.
Does an IP65 strip light work outdoors, in the rain?
IP65 resists water jets, not immersion or permanent running water. Under a porch, a covered entrance or a covered terrace, it holds; directly exposed to driving rain, prefer an outdoor model designed for this and check the fixing.
How to fix an LED strip light to the ceiling without multiplying holes?
Mark the position with a pencil, check that no conduit runs directly above, then fix the supplied clips or brackets at the points provided by the profile. Two well-aligned fixings are generally enough; the profile then clips onto them, which simplifies future interventions.
Do you need a transformer for a 220 V LED strip light?
A strip light designed for 220 V connects to the mains and generally houses its driver in the profile, with no separate transformer. Check the mention on the label or the product sheet, and entrust the connection to an electrician if the circuit is not provided.
