An E27 socket spotlight takes a standard screw-in bulb: power, colour temperature and shape can be chosen freely, without changing the fitting. The bulb is replaced by hand, which keeps the light adjustable long after the light fixture is bought.
What is an E27 bulb, and why choose an E27 socket spotlight?
An E27 bulb screws into a 27 mm diameter screw socket, the most common format in France. An E27 socket spotlight therefore takes any E27 LED bulb: power, colour temperature and shape can be changed whenever you want, without replacing the spotlight.
E27 LED bulbs: what a standard screw socket changes
The real advantage is there: the fixture stays, the light evolves. You change your mind about the shade, a bulb blows, a child moves to the reading corner, you simply unscrew. The E27 cap is incompatible with an E14 (fine screw) and with a GU10 (pins): before ordering an adjustable spotlight, check the shape of the socket on the packaging of the fixture already in place.
Choosing the shape of an E27 bulb according to the fixture
The E27 LED Spotlights collection has 29 products, all with an E27 socket. To choose the shape of an E27 bulb, you need to check compatibility with the fixture. The rest of the Designix lighting catalogue follows the same logic of interchangeable sockets.
How many lumens are needed for an LED spotlight, and what power should you choose?
The number of lumens depends on the room and the use, not on the size of the spotlight. To read or cook, you need a stronger light; to move around, a soft light is enough. Two E27 bulbs of equal watts are compared by looking at the lumens shown on the packaging.
E27 LED bulbs 15w, 40w or 100w: reading the stated power
Watts measure consumption, lumens measure the light produced. A moderate-power LED bulb can light as much as an old, far more demanding filament bulb: it is the efficiency that has changed. So never compare an LED to a halogen on watts alone, compare the lumens, and add up the sources present in the same room rather than overloading a single point.
E27 LED bulbs 4000k: recognising neutral light
The number followed by the letter K indicates the colour temperature, not the power or the quality. Around 4000 K, the light appears white, with no yellow or blue cast. It is a useful reference on the packaging when you want to reproduce in a hallway the same shade as in the kitchen, and all the modern lines suit this crisp light well.
E27 LED bulbs warm white or cool white: which temperature to choose?
Warm white, around 2700 to 3000 K, gives a golden light suited to the living room, the bedroom and relaxation areas. Neutral white, around 4000 K, stays crisper and suits the kitchen or the hallway. Cool white is reserved for work areas and outdoors.
| Temperature | Perceived shade | Recommended rooms | To avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm white, around 2700 to 3000 K | Golden, warm | Living room, bedroom, reading corner | Precision work station |
| Neutral white, around 4000 K | White, no cast | Kitchen, hallway, laundry room, garage | Bedroom at bedtime |
| Cool white, around 6000 K | Bluish, very bright | Work areas, outdoors | Living room and bedroom |
E27 LED bulbs warm white: living room, bedroom and reading corner
In a relaxation room, the warm shade softens materials and colours: wood appears deeper, textiles softer. Two or three distributed sources are better than a single very strong point. To go further, browse our living room selection and their distributed light.
E27 LED bulbs cool white: kitchen and work areas
On a worktop, a crisp light helps distinguish shades and work cleanly. It must fall in front of you and not in your eyes, which requires spotlights designed for the kitchen, aimed at the worktop. For a terrace or an outdoor passage, a cooler white and a outdoor spotlight protected against the weather remain the right combination.
Where to place an E27 LED spotlight: ceiling, wall light or chandelier?
On the ceiling, several spotlights distribute an overall light; on the wall, an LED wall light illuminates without taking up floor space and highlights a passage; a chandelier or an LED ceiling light concentrates the light in the centre of the room. The choice depends on the height and the use.
Modern LED wall light or adjustable spotlight: what effect on the wall?
A wall light diffuses upwards, downwards, or as a wall wash: the wall becomes luminous and the room appears taller. An adjustable spotlight does the opposite, it projects a tight beam onto an object or a surface. The two combine very well in the same corridor.
LED chandelier, LED ceiling light or spotlights: what light in the centre of the room?
A central ceiling light illuminates the whole room without adjusting each source: practical above a table or in a hallway. A chandelier also plays a decorative role when it remains visible. Recessed spotlights erase the fixture and let the light alone appear. See the pieces with elaborate design if the fixture must be seen as much as it illuminates.
E27 LED spotlight for the living room, kitchen or bedroom: what distribution?
In a living room, several soft sources are better than a single very strong point. Above a worktop, the light must fall in front of you, without cast shadow. In a bedroom, adjustable spotlights, a moderate intensity and, if the mood changes, a dimmer are preferred.
| Room | Light sought | Recommended variant | Point of vigilance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Soft and distributed | Adjustable spotlights on the ceiling, several sources | Avoid a single too strong point |
| Kitchen | Precise on the worktop | Adjustable spotlights above the worktop | Light in front of you, not in your eyes |
| Bedroom | Soft and adjustable | Adjustable spotlights on the wall or ceiling | Moderate intensity, dimmer appreciated |
| Staircase | Safe marking | Recessed spotlights, grazing light | Light the steps and stair nosing |
| Outdoors | Weather resistant | Outdoor spotlights with high protection rating | Check the IP rating before installation |
LED spotlights for the kitchen: above the worktop
Count one source at the height of each activity zone rather than a single one in the centre of the ceiling. The light comes from the side, slightly in front of your hands, to avoid the body's cast shadow on the chopping board. Adjustable recessed spotlights allow the axis to be adjusted once the room is furnished.
LED spotlights for the bedroom: soft and adjustable light
Two sources on either side of the bed advantageously replace a single ceiling light: you read without lighting the whole room. A dimmable model lets you lower the intensity at the end of the evening. Find these ideas in our selection of bedroom light, and for vertical circulations, staircase lighting follows the same marking logic.
Recessed, adjustable or design E27 spotlight: how to choose the variant?
A recessed spotlight sits flush with the ceiling and disappears: only the light remains visible, which suits carefully finished rooms. An adjustable model adds an axis of adjustment, useful for aiming at a worktop or a painting. A design spotlight asserts its presence, with a visible shape or ring. The colour is then chosen according to the surface: white on a light ceiling, black on a dark wall or to mark the line. Outdoors, the question is settled first by the protection rating, which indicates resistance to water and dust. Our recessed models cover the first two cases, and the metal finishes answer to more understated interiors.
How to install and maintain an E27 LED spotlight?
Cut the power at the circuit breaker before any work. Fix the support according to the instructions, screw the E27 bulb in by hand until contact, without forcing, and stay within the maximum power indicated on the fixture. Maintenance is done with a dry cloth, with the power off, without abrasive product.
E27 LED bulbs dimmable: check dimmer compatibility
An E27 dimmable bulb only works well with a dimmer designed for LED loads. Otherwise, the light flickers or goes out during adjustment. Dimmer-compatible models avoid this trial and error, and recessed dimmable spotlights deal with the same subject once installed on the ceiling, with the electronics already validated by the manufacturer.
E27 LED bulbs decorative: change the bulb without changing the spotlight
On a wall light or a chandelier where the bulb remains visible, an elaborate shape or an exposed filament becomes a decorative element. These bulbs often light less than a classic bulb: reserve them for atmosphere and keep a stronger source for reading or working.
What budget to plan and how to choose without making a mistake?
First compare what cannot be changed: the material of the support, the finish, the quality of the fixing and the precision of the adjustment. A simple and efficient entry-level illuminates a passage room correctly. A more elaborate piece is paid for its finish and its material, not for its light. As the bulb remains interchangeable, adjust the shade and the intensity after buying the support, without buying the fixture again.
E27 LED spotlights: entry-level or elaborate piece?
For a corridor, a garage or a laundry room, a sober model is enough. For a living room visible from the hallway, the ring, the colour and the orientation justify a more accomplished model. Look at the matte black versions and the white LED spotlights according to the colour of your ceiling, then browse all our lighting families to place each piece in the whole.

Frequently asked questions
What is an E27 bulb?
It is a bulb with a 27 mm diameter screw cap, the most common format in France. It screws in by hand into an E27 socket, on a spotlight, a ceiling light or a wall light. E27 bulbs come in LED with varied shapes and colour temperatures.
How many lumens are needed for an LED spotlight?
It all depends on the room and the use: moving around requires less light than reading or cooking. The right reference is to compare the lumens shown on E27 bulbs of equivalent power, and to add up the sources in the same room rather than overexposing a single one.
E27 LED bulbs warm white or cool white, what to choose?
Warm white, around 2700 to 3000 K, warms the living room and the bedroom. Neutral white, around 4000 K, lights a kitchen or a hallway more crisply. Cool white is reserved for work areas: in a living room, it hardens colours.
Can a dimmable E27 bulb be used on any spotlight?
No: you need a dimmer compatible with LED bulbs, otherwise the light flickers or goes out during adjustment. The bulb must be stated as dimmable and the dimmer designed for this type of load. Without a dimmer, the bulb simply works all or nothing.
Can an LED wall light be installed instead of a spotlight on the wall?
Yes, if the support is designed for fixing and cable routing. An LED wall light illuminates upwards, downwards or as a wall wash, without taking up space; an adjustable spotlight directs the flow where you want it. The two combine very well in a living room.
