A cloud ceiling light comes down to three decisions: the shape of the volume, the material of the shade and the available cable length. Start by measuring the gap between your ceiling and your table, then choose the shape that will light the room without dazzling anyone seated.
What is a cloud ceiling light and what kind of light does it give?
Adjust the cable so the bottom of the fixture sits at seated eye level, then choose the shape. A cloud ceiling light is a pendant whose shade plays on soft volumes: glass ball, globe, spiral, star or a shape evoking a cloud. In this selection, the light is mostly warm white 2700 to 3500 K, either integrated LED or on E27, GU10 and G4 sockets.
Design cloud ceiling light: what sets ball, globe, spiral, star and cloud shapes apart
A ball shape concentrates light on a single point and casts a sharp shadow on the ceiling, a globe shape widens and softens it, spiral and star shapes throw patterns onto the wall, and a cloud shape spreads light across several volumes. These differences show most clearly on a pale wall, about a metre from the fixture: a ball makes its mark, a cloud wraps around.
White cloud ceiling light: opal glass, acrylic and pale feathers, and how they read on a dark wall
White appears on most models, in opal glass, acrylic or pale feathers. On a dark wall these materials stand out in contrast and diffuse light more evenly than clear glass. That is the case with Sillinora in opal glass, whose slim cable leaves the volume alone on stage.
Glass, feather, metal or acrylic cloud ceiling light: which material should you choose?
Metal forms the structure of every model, glass dresses the majority of them, then come iron, acrylic and feather. Opal glass diffuses even light and dusts off with a cloth, feather brings a light volume and a soft shadow, acrylic stays understated and matte. Compare these finishes in our selection of glass models.
| Model | Shape and material | Recommended room | Socket | Colour temperature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marano | Ball, metal and glass | Living room, dining room, kitchen | LED | Warm white |
| Globella | Ball, metal and glass | Living room, dining room, kitchen | LED | Warm white |
| Fola | Vintage ball, feather and metal | Living room, bedroom, child's room | E27 | Depends on the bulb |
| Nuance Céleste | Cloud, acrylic, metal and iron | Living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom | GU10 | Depends on the bulb |
| Fumora | Globe, metal and smoked glass | Living room, dining room, kitchen | LED | Warm white |
| Sillinora | Ball, opal glass and metal | Living room, dining room, kitchen | LED | Warm white |
Glass cloud ceiling light: enveloping light and easy care
Glass, whether opal or smoked, softens the source and avoids direct glare. A smoked glass like the one on Fumora slightly lowers perceived brightness and deepens the tint of the light: best kept for rooms where you want a muted mood. A soft cloth is enough to dust it.
Paper cloud ceiling light: why this selection plays on other materials
This selection includes no paper pendants. The materials used are metal, glass, iron, acrylic and feather. The choice therefore comes down to the diffusion you want: glass for even light, acrylic for a matte, light finish, feather for a volume that fills the space.
Where to install a cloud ceiling light: living room, bedroom, kitchen or bathroom?
The living room and dining room account for most models, with the kitchen and bedroom close behind. Multi-light pendants suit a worktop or a large table, while single ball shapes suit a reading corner. All models are IP20, so they are for dry areas only.
Design bedroom ceiling light: how much intensity for the evening
In a bedroom, aim for warm white light and a source that does not fall in line with the bed. A ball shape or a soft diffuser such as Nuance Céleste lights the room without dazzling you when you are lying down. To pick the right size, browse the bedroom pendants.
Kitchen ceiling light: above a worktop or an island
Above a worktop, one light is enough if it hangs low; above an island, two or three aligned points light the surface better. A kitchen pendant should stay within reach for cleaning and out of your line of sight when you stand at the counter. The Reya model takes adjustable light points, useful for aiming light at the worktop.
At what height should you hang a cloud ceiling light above a table?
Above a table, aim for a pendant whose bottom sits at seated eye level, low enough to light the tabletop without getting in the way of conversation: adjust the cable gradually, once the table is in place. Ball models offer 60 or 70 cm up to 350 or 360 cm of cable height.
| Model | Dimensions or diameter | Cable height |
|---|---|---|
| Marano | Ø 25 cm | 70 to 360 cm |
| Globella | Ø 20 cm | 60 to 350 cm |
| Fumora | Ø 20 cm | 60 to 350 cm |
| Sillinora | Ø 25 cm | 70 to 360 cm |
| Fola | 55, 60 or 65 cm wide | Not stated |
| Nuance Céleste | 242 mm to 1142 mm wide depending on the version | Up to 1200 mm, adjustable |
XXL ceiling light for a high ceiling: which volume and how much cable
A high ceiling calls for a large volume and a long cable, otherwise the fixture floats too far from the eye. Ball models 25 cm in diameter go up to 360 cm, which covers most double-height living rooms. Ball pendants have the advantage of staying readable from a distance.
Short cable or long cable: the case of a coffee table or a mezzanine
Above a coffee table, a short cable avoids visual clutter and the risk of knocks. Under a mezzanine or in a hallway, the opposite: a longer cable brings the source down into the useful zone. Check the minimum height of the model before cutting, it ranges from 60 to 70 cm depending on the reference.
Which cloud ceiling light for a child's room?
For a child's room, a ball or cloud shape in acrylic or feather diffuses light without a dazzling point, and warm white 2700 to 3500 K helps with falling asleep. The Fola model is listed for this room. Set the cable high enough to stay out of reach.
Children's cloud ceiling light: ball, globe or cloud shape
Ball and cloud shapes round off the silhouette and avoid the angles that draw the eye to the ceiling. Fola in white feathers plays on a light volume and a muted light, which works better than a clear glass globe in a small room.
Child's room cloud ceiling light: which light temperature in the evening
In the evening, stay with warm white, around 2700 K if the bulb is replaceable. On models with integrated LED, the temperature is fixed and sits at warm white across this selection.
LED, E27, GU10 or G4 socket: which bulb for a cloud ceiling light?
Four families sit side by side: integrated LED, E27, GU10 and G4. Integrated LED cannot be replaced but uses little power, E27 takes a standard screw bulb, and GU10 and G4 are pin sockets for adjustable spots. The temperature ranges from warm white to cool white depending on the model.
Warm white or cool white: which one for a living space
Warm white, around 2700 to 3500 K, suits the living room, the bedroom and meals. Cool white, around 4500 to 6500 K, lights better for cooking or working but hardens a room meant for relaxing. On models with a replaceable socket, the bulb decides, so you keep control.
Dimmer: what it changes day to day
Only a small share of the models in this selection accept a dimmer. It lets you lower the intensity in the evening without changing the bulb, provided the module or the bulb is compatible. If this matters to you, mention it to Designix customer service before ordering.
Original ceiling light or Italian design: which style should you choose?
Modern style dominates, ahead of contemporary, then industrial, original, vintage and bohemian. In practice: geometric lines and opal glass for contemporary, black metal and simple volumes for industrial, feathers and beige or gold tones for bohemian.
Italian design ceiling light: the signs that make the style, not the country
The codes of this style read on the models themselves: opal or smoked glass ball, slim cable, metal structure in black, white or gold, geometric shapes and tiered discs. No country of manufacture is stated on the product pages. Browse the design pendant lights to spot these signs.
Original ceiling light: when to choose a piece that stands out
A piece that stands out belongs where you see it from a distance: stairwell, hallway, corner of the sofa. Éclat Sombre and its nine balls, or Reya and its tiered discs, fill that role without overcrowding the room. Find these silhouettes in our selection of design pendants.
How do you install and care for a cloud ceiling light?
Installation is limited to wiring the fixture to the ceiling outlet and adjusting the cable length. Dusting is done dry: a soft cloth on glass and acrylic, cool air or a soft brush on feathers. A dimmer is possible on only some of the models.
Branch ceiling light: composing several light points
Better to choose a model already made of three or five lights, with the spacing set at the factory, than an assembly of separate pendants. Nuance Céleste comes in one, three and five lights, with an adjustable height up to 1200 mm. Have the wiring checked by your electrician.
Day-to-day care of feathers and acrylic
Feathers are dusted with cool air or a soft brush, never with a damp sponge, which weighs them down. Acrylic and glass are cleaned with a soft cloth, dry or very slightly damp. On black models such as Globella, a dry cloth avoids marks.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: you can compare the pendant lights and come back to your choice without pressure. For a living room or a large table, start with living room pendants and check the cable height: that is what decides the final look. Our Designix lighting range gathers the rest of the selection.
Frequently asked questions about the cloud ceiling light
Is an IP44 bathroom ceiling light available in this selection?
All models in this selection are IP20, protection against solids without protection against water. They are therefore suited to dry rooms, or a bathroom where humidity stays low, away from a direct water point. If you are looking for an IP44 pendant, mention it to Designix customer service.
Paper or glass cloud ceiling light: what is the difference?
This selection includes no paper pendant: the materials used are metal, glass, iron, acrylic and feather. Opal glass gives even light and dusts off with a cloth, acrylic a more matte and lighter finish. The choice therefore comes down to the diffusion you want.
Which bulb for a ceiling light with an E27 socket?
An E27 socket takes a standard screw bulb, LED preferably, in the temperature of your choice: warm white 2700 to 3500 K for a soft mood, cool white 4500 to 6500 K for working. The Fola and Lera models are E27, with several light points.
How do you install a branch ceiling light with several light points?
For a branch effect, better to choose a model already made of three or five lights, such as Nuance Céleste, with the spacing set at the factory, than an assembly of separate pendants. Its height is adjustable up to 1200 mm. Have the wiring checked by your electrician.
How do you recognise an Italian design ceiling light?
In this selection, the codes of this style read on the models themselves: opal or smoked glass ball, slim cable, metal structure in black, white or gold, geometric shapes and tiered discs. No country of manufacture is stated on the product pages. Compare them in the modern pendants and the metal pendants.
