Count on a reading light with a tilting head, in warm white around 2700 to 3500 K, fixed above the headboard or placed near the armchair. In this collection, most models screw in with E27, half accept a dimmer and all are IP20: they are made for indoor use.

What is the best reading light for reading a book?

A good reading light illuminates the page and nothing else. Look for a head that tilts (articulated arm, adjustable arc, swivelling shade), a warm light between 2700 and 3500 K, and a dimmer if you share the bedroom. The E27 socket, the most common in all our reading lights, lets you choose the bulb yourself.

The three criteria that matter

First the direction: without a movable head, you endure the beam. Then the temperature, around 2700 to 3500 K for evening reading. Finally the adjustable intensity. The Vory wall light in 50x16 cm combines a GU10 socket with two temperatures and accepts a dimmer. The Zodiac model, with a 6 W dimmable LED module and 200 cm of cable, needs no bulb at all.

Avoiding glare in the room

A wide shade brings the light down towards the page instead of projecting it into the room. That is the role of the Banwa wall light and its 60 cm woven bamboo shade, or of a long arm such as the one on the Vélane (90+30 cm arm). The beam is then aimed at the book, a few dozen centimetres from the page.

Where to install a book light: bedroom, sofa or desk?

The bedroom and the living room account for most uses. The reading light is fixed above the headboard so as not to disturb the person sleeping next to you, or near the sofa and the desk to light a book, a screen or an armchair. The desk comes next, for reading on a worktop.

Bedside reading light: above the headboard

Fix it at shoulder height, once seated in bed, on the outer side of the mattress. An arm that folds back towards the wall lets you switch off without getting up. Reading lights for reading in bed and reader bedside lamps cover this need, with freestanding models for those who prefer not to drill anything.

Chic living room lamp and sofa reading corner

Near the sofa, the light should fall on your lap, not in the eyes of the person opposite. The base slips directly below the backrest or behind the armchair. See the sofa reading lights for this placement, and keep the adjustable arm to fine-tune it to your position.

Wall mounted reading light or floor lamp: which version to choose?

A wall light frees up the floor and the worktop, but it requires a fixing point and a power supply in the right place. A floor lamp can be moved and lights more widely: it suits better when the wall behind the sofa is not available.

Mount or place: which reading light for your layout
Option Footprint Common socket Where it goes For which situation
Wall mounted reading light No floor footprint E27, G9 or LED module Above the headboard, near the sofa, at the desk Free wall and power supply in the right place
Reading floor lamp A base or an arc on the floor E27 Next to an armchair, directly below the sofa Light you can move, wall not available
Desk or freestanding lamp Tall base, column format E27 Reading corner, bedroom, desk Need to light high and wide
Large arc wall light Long arm, wide shade E27 Living room, dining room Lighting a table or a sofa without a base

Adjustable arm wall lights are fixed high and adjusted once and for all. Reading floor lamps and freestanding models move from one room to another. For a large living room, the Korvik arc floor lamp and its 40 cm adjustable cork shade carries light far from the wall, at 40 W in E27.

What light for reading in the evening without glare?

For reading, a warm white light between 2700 and 3500 K tires the eye less than a cool white of 4500 to 6500 K, which is better suited to focused work. A dimmer lets you lower the intensity when someone is sleeping or looking at a screen nearby. Warm white accounts for most of the models in the Designix lighting catalogue.

Warm white or cool white for reading?

Warm white leans towards amber: it is the evening light, the one for a novel before sleeping. Cool white lights sharply and suits a desk or a precise task. Some models offer both, such as the Vory wall light, which lets you switch from one use to the other without changing the lamp.

Dimmer: reading without waking the person next to you

Half of the models in the collection accept a dimmer: Spring, Classy, Banwa and Verdar wall lights, among others. The principle is simple: you turn the intensity up on the page, and down when you close the book. A compatible bulb is required, and entry-level LEDs rarely are.

Which socket and bulb to choose for a reading light?

Most reading lights in the collection screw in with E27: you fit the bulb of your choice, including an LED. Models with an LED module, G9, GU10 or G4 take compact sources, in a smaller format than E27.

Sockets in the collection and bulbs to plan for
Socket Presence in the selection Type of source What it means
E27 The most widespread Screw bulb, LED or filament You choose the temperature and the wattage
LED A few models Dedicated LED module Fixed format, no screw bulb
G9 A few models Small looped bulb Ideal for slim wall lights
GU10 A few models Pin bulb, quarter turn Often adjustable on a wall light
G4 Rare Very small source Accent light in a small space

An E27 socket like the one on the Nuora reading light lets you replace the bulb without changing the lamp, which matters over time. The Paro wall light, in G9, offers a reduced format for slim models, while freestanding LED reading lights come with their own source.

How to mount and adjust a wall mounted reading light?

A reading light is fixed to the wall at the chosen height, then its articulated arm or arc is adjusted to aim at the book. On models with exposed cable, allow for the run to the socket: the adjustable reaches given range from 115 to 175 cm depending on the model.

Adjusting the reach of the arm or arc before drilling

First find the seated position: height of the sofa backrest or the headboard, then the distance to the book. Hold the light against the wall, arm extended, before marking the holes. The stated reach varies: 115 to 145 cm on the large Classy wall light and its linen shade, 130 to 175 cm on the Verdar wall reading light in green velvet.

How to connect several lamps to a single power supply?

Several lighting points can run from the same supply, in parallel and not in series, within the limit of the circuit protection. Each connection stays accessible in a box. On an old or already loaded circuit, have the wiring checked by an electrician. The 200 cm cable of the Zodiac model leaves room to reach an existing socket.

Designer bedside lamp, chic living room lamp: which finishes to choose?

In terms of finishes, black dominates, followed by silver and white; gold and green serve as accents. Velvet, bamboo, linen or cork bring a warm texture, while brushed steel and aluminium keep a sober look, easy to match with a contemporary interior.

Designer bedside lamp: the style markers

Round shapes are the most common, ahead of tubes and spheres. A black wall light blends into the wall; a silver or brushed steel finish stands out more. Browse the matte black finishes or the white reading lights depending on the wall behind the bed, then refine with the entirely black selection.

Italian design table lamp and gold accents

This style shows in fine lines, slender proportions and discreet bases. The Bella floor lamp in brushed steel, 135 cm tall, plays this sober card, just like the Prestige Chic gold wall light and its velvet shade. For a softer material, look at natural materials and wood, bronze models and pieces with elaborate design.

How to recognise a real salt lamp and tell it apart from a reading light?

Nothing links a salt lamp to a reading light: the first diffuses a continuous orange light, the second lights a page on demand. A real salt block is recognised by its irregular veins and its shade that varies from one piece to another, where a moulded copy stays smooth and uniform.

Red light salt lamp: where does this shade come from?

The colour comes from the rock salt itself, which filters the light of the bulb placed inside. The more powerful the bulb, the more the shade leans towards bright orange; a weak bulb gives an amber glow. It is not a setting but the stone that colours the light. The stone fears humidity and should be left on regularly.

Clip-on book light or wall light?

A clip-on lamp fixes to the edge of a book, a tablet or a table, on battery or on a nearby cable, and follows the reader from one room to another. A reading light is screwed to the wall and completely frees up the reading surface. This collection is made up of wall lights and floor lamps with adjustable arms such as wall mounted reading lights.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best reading light?

The best reading light is one whose head points at the page without lighting the rest of the room. Look for an articulated arm or an adjustable arc, a warm light around 2700 to 3500 K and a dimmer if you share the room. The E27 socket remains the most common.

Where can I find a reading lamp for reading a book?

In this collection, you find the two families used for reading in bed or on the sofa: the wall light with an adjustable arm, to fix above the headboard, and the reading floor lamp, placed on the floor, useful when the wall is not free.

How to recognise a real salt lamp?

A real rock salt block is recognised by its irregular veins, its shades that vary from one piece to another and a surface that is never perfectly smooth. A moulded copy shows a uniform shade and sharp edges.

Clip-on book light: what is the difference from a reading light?

A clip-on reading light fixes to the edge of a book or a table and follows you from one room to another; it depends on a battery or a nearby cable. A reading light is screwed to the wall, is permanently powered and frees up the reading surface.

How to connect several lamps to a single power supply?

Several lighting points can be powered from the same supply, in parallel and not in series, within the limit of the circuit protection. Each connection must stay accessible. On an old or already loaded circuit, have the wiring checked by an electrician.

To choose, start from the hardest constraint: the location of the power connection. Once that place is known, the model is decided by the reach of the arm, then by the finish. Reader bedside lamps and sofa reading lights bring together the two most common uses.

To choose, look at the reach of the arm, the type of socket and whether a dimmer is included: these three criteria change everyday use.
