A cylinder floor lamp is chosen first by height and IP rating: a tubular stem from 139 to 170 cm for accent lighting, up to 235 cm for a large room, IP20 indoors and IP65 on the terrace. The tube shape remains the majority in our selection, most often in metal, black or white.
What is a cylinder floor lamp and what light does it give?
A cylinder floor lamp is a freestanding light whose stem or shade forms a vertical tube, often in metal, plastic or fabric-wrapped. The light shines down or diffuses sideways depending on the model: E27 screw-in socket, integrated LED, warm white 2700-3500K indoors or cool white outdoors.
White or black cylinder floor lamp: what effect in the room?
A white cylinder disappears against a pale wall and bounces light up to the ceiling; it visually enlarges a small living room. Black structures the room, marks the corner and stands out more: it sits near an armchair or against a bookcase. Both shades dominate our selection, with white models for bright rooms and black finishes for more graphic interiors.
Cylinder table lamp or floor lamp: what is the difference?
A table lamp sits on a table or shelf and lights a nearby area at seating height. A floor lamp lights from the ground: its stem rises from 100 to over 200 cm and its light reaches further into the room. For seating, choose a floor lamp; for an already furnished reading corner, a table lamp is enough. The rest of our lighting universe covers both uses.
Which cylinder floor lamp to choose for each room?
The living room calls for a tall cylinder that spreads an enveloping light, the bedroom a low and discreet version, the office a model that lights the work area, the terrace an IP65 weatherproof floor lamp. The room decides the height and IP rating before the style.
Cylinder floor lamp for the living room
A tall stem of 180 to 235 cm sets the mood without taking up floor space. Place it in the corner near the sofa, a few centimetres away from the wall to avoid a hard shadow. A model with a wide shade gives a softer, more comfortable halo for entertaining. See the living room floor lamps and the clean-lined versions.
Bedroom, office and small spaces
In a bedroom, a compact 140 cm format and a warm light are enough to light a bedroom without glare. In the office, the source points toward the desk: adjustable models help get more light at the desk in the evening. In a hallway or a small toilet, a reduced height and focused lighting do the job without cluttering the passage.
| Room | What matters | IP rating | Socket or source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Height and diffused light, wide shade | IP20 | E27 or integrated LED |
| Bedroom | Compact format, low and warm light | IP20 | E27 |
| Office | Source directed at the desk | IP20 | E27 or LED |
| Terrace and outdoor | Weatherproofing and resistance | IP65 | Integrated LED |
| Hallway, toilet, small spaces | Reduced height, focused lighting | IP20 | E27 |
Terrace and outdoor: aim for IP65
Outside, the IP rating comes before style. An IP65 cylinder resists splashes and rain, which an indoor model cannot handle. The Fity cylinder for the terrace is an IP65 model. Grace.
E27 socket or integrated LED, warm white or cool white: what to choose?
An E27 socket takes a screw-in bulb you can replace freely, an integrated LED imposes its own source but uses little power. The temperature matters just as much: warm white relaxes in a living room or bedroom, cool white lights a terrace or worktop more sharply.
Halogen floor lamp with dimmer: is it still done?
A fitting with an E27 socket takes a halogen bulb, but it heats up and uses more power than an LED. Above all, not every bulb supports dimming: it is the bulb and fitting pair that decides. Check the model's spec sheet before buying. To cut the bill, go for low-consumption LED lighting.
Dimmer: which models benefit?
A minority of models is designed for dimming, notably the Liéro with its cork shade and the Aréa, linen shade. It is the right choice to vary the light in the evening: bright light for reading, low light for watching a film. Without a dimmer, you lower the mood with a warmer-temperature bulb.
Floor lamp: what height and what shade to choose?
Count the height of the fitting and the clearance needed: an accent cylinder sits between 139 and 170 cm, a large mood model rises up to 235 cm. The shade, in fabric, linen, cork or bamboo, filters the light: the wider it is, the more diffused the halo.
139, 170 or 235 cm: how to read the height?
Measure from the floor, not from your eye. A stem of 139 to 170 cm suits a standard living room or a terrace: the light passes above a coffee table without dazzling a seated person. Beyond 180 cm, the fitting lights from above and becomes a mood element, useful in a room with a high ceiling.
| Format | Indicative height | Recommended room | Example model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact cylinder | 100 to 140 cm | Bedroom, hallway, office | Fity 100 cm, Fredo 139 cm |
| Floor cylinder | 160 to 170 cm | Terrace, living room | Fity 160 cm, Fredo 168 cm, Grace 170 cm |
| Tall height | 180 to 235 cm | Spacious living room, reading corner | Liéro 180 cm, Curve 210 cm, Campanula 235 cm |
| Multi-point arc | About 194 cm | Behind a sofa | Qile, five lights |
Shade: fabric, linen, cork or bamboo
Fabric softens the light and tints it slightly; a linen shade gives a more natural and brighter result. Cork and bamboo warm the colour and bring a visible material: the Curve bamboo shade cylinder. Glass lets more light through.
Which floor lamp lights best?
It depends on the surface to be lit, not on the wattage. For reading or working, aim for a model with the source directed at the seat and adjustable intensity; for a mood, a diffused-light cylinder placed in the corner is enough. The white colour and the height do the rest.
Stated power and real light
An E27 socket rated 40W maximum describes what the fitting can take, not what it lights. The perceived light depends on the bulb you screw in, the tint of the shade and the distance to the wall or seat. So choose the fitting by its shape and height, then the bulb by use.
Direct or diffuse: two different uses
A directed beam is for reading, sewing or working: it sits near the armchair, shade pointing at the page. A wide diffusion lights the room without a hard spot, more pleasant in the evening. An adjustable model covers both if you want to avoid buying two lamps. To go further, compare modern floor lamps and contemporary lines according to the volume of your room.
Original floor lamp: how to step away from the classic cylinder?
Keep a cylindrical stem and change the finish: cork, linen or bamboo shade, concrete base, gold metal, ball or cage shape. These variants keep the soft light of the cylinder while giving character to the living room, without falling into purely decorative lighting.
A ball floor lamp rather than a tube: when to choose it?
When the fitting should be seen as much as it lights. A sphere or a gold cage draws the eye, but it also casts a more fragmented light than a tube. Reserve it for rooms where mood matters more than work: a living room, a reading corner, a wide hallway. See Golden Cage in gold metal and other ball floor lamp options.
Cork, linen and bamboo: the materials that change everything
A concrete base stabilises a large arc, a cork shade diffuses a honeyed tint, bamboo brings a pale texture. Campanula plays with volume; Aréa stays lighter with its taupe linen. For metal and gold, browse the gold finish and the metal floor lamp.
What are the trends for floor lamps in 2026?
Sober cylindrical shapes dominate, with black, white, silver or gold tones and natural materials such as linen, cork or bamboo. Metal remains the most common base, glass and velvet appear in touches, and LED sources are winning outdoors.
Black and white: the two dominant shades
Black dresses rooms that are already bright and pairs with wood as well as concrete; white blends into bright interiors. Gold and silver come third, often on a slim stem or a cage. If you hesitate, start from the dominant colour of your wall: contrast works better than matching.
Modern, contemporary, industrial: which style to pick?
Contemporary and modern lines cover most of our selection; the industrial spirit appears on a few models with exposed metal structure, and Nordic style on pale fabric shades. The choice of style comes after height and IP rating, never before.
How to install, maintain and buy a cylinder floor lamp?
Assemble the stem, fix the base and check stability before plugging in. A soft cloth is enough on metal and plastic; an IP65 outdoor model is cleaned with a damp cloth. For buying, secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service.
Assembly and stability in a few minutes
Mount the stem section by section, without forcing the threads, then fit the base and tighten by hand. Once standing, test the stability: a wide or concrete-weighted base holds better than a slim one, especially if the fitting is near a walkway. Run the cable along the wall, never across a walking area.
Cleaning by material and IP rating
Metal, plastic and glass are cleaned with a soft cloth, without abrasive product or scouring sponge. A fabric, linen or bamboo shade is dusted dry, with a soft brush or a vacuum at low setting. An IP65 outdoor model takes a damp cloth, which does not remove the need to cut the power first.
2 or 5 year warranty: what does it cover?
The warranty covers manufacturing defects of the fitting: structure, finish, wiring. It does not cover a burnt-out bulb, an impact or the immersion of an indoor model. Most of our selection is guaranteed for two years, and the affordable models benefit from the same conditions. For a complete project, add an accent floor lamp.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: you order, you install, you test the light at home before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Which floor lamp lights best?
The one whose light matches the use: a model with a directed, adjustable source for reading or working, a wide-diffusion cylinder for mood. Height, white temperature and shade shape matter more than the wattage stated on the box.
Halogen floor lamp with dimmer, how does it work?
An E27 floor lamp takes a compatible screw-in bulb, and the intensity is adjusted if the fitting is designed for it. Note: halogen heats up and uses more than an LED, and not every bulb supports a dimmer. Check the model's spec sheet.
How to choose a shade for a floor lamp?
The shade filters the light: in fabric or linen it softens it, in cork or bamboo it warms the tint, in glass it lets more through. The wider its diameter, the more diffused and comfortable the halo near a seat or a reading armchair.
Where to place a floor lamp in the living room?
In the corner near the sofa for a mood halo, slightly away from the wall to avoid a hard shadow, and close enough to the armchair for reading. An adjustable-intensity model goes near the seats, since you can lower the light in the evening.
White cylinder floor lamp: how to match it?
On a pale wall or light wood floor, a white cylinder blends into the decor and visually enlarges the room; add contrast with a linen shade, a gold base or a coloured textile. Outdoors, white stands out more.
