Choose your antique wall light using three reference points: the room's protection rating, the bulb socket and the mounting height. An antique wall light is a fixture in metal, brass, bronze, glass or crystal, fixed to the wall, that lights upwards, downwards or in a halo and serves as accent lighting without glare.
What is an antique wall light?
An antique wall light is a wall fixture with a style inspired by the years 1900 to 1970: metal, brass, bronze, glass or crystal, often with a visible bulb or a small shade. It mounts on the wall, lights upwards, downwards or in a halo, and serves as accent lighting in a living room, hallway or bedroom.
The look matters more than the spec sheet. Some models diffuse a warm white between 2700 and 3500 K, the range that warms a wall without flattening it. The direction depends on the shade or the glass: downwards to light a surface, upwards to wash a wall, in a halo when the bulb stays visible. To browse the whole range, go through all our light fixtures. You can then refine in the wall light collection.
Antique wall light: which materials and finishes?
Metal dominates, often combined with aluminium, glass or brass. Brass and bronze bring a warm tone that patinas over time, glass diffuses without glare, crystal and acrylic draw finer shapes. In terms of colour, black and gold cover most models. These finishes appear in the gold finishes. The dark versions are gathered in the black wall lights.
Antique or modern wall light: what difference in the look?
A modern wall light often seeks grazing light or a directed beam, with flat bulbs and clean lines. An antique wall light assumes the opposite: visible bulb, worked mount, more enveloping light. The two coexist very well in the same room. If you hesitate, compare with a more contemporary take, then look at the bedroom wall lights, where softer formats often work better.
Which antique wall light style to choose between Art Deco, country chic and boho?
Art Deco style plays on brass, crystal and geometric shapes; country chic relies on patinated metal, bronze and glass; boho chic favours round shapes, rings or flowers. Gold, black or bronze finishes separate these worlds as much as the material chosen.
The simplest approach is to start from the room, then the style. A narrow hallway takes a slim wall light, a living room a symmetrical pair. The table below sums up the matches seen in the selection.
| Style | Materials and finishes | Rooms where it stands out | Sockets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Art Deco | Brass, crystal, metal, gold or brown | Hallway, stairs, bedroom, entrance | G9, E14 |
| Country chic | Patinated metal, bronze, glass | Living room, bedroom, dining room | E27, E14 |
| Boho chic | Crystal, acrylic, aluminium, gold and white | Living room, bedroom, bathroom | G4, E27 |
| Industrial | Steel, black metal, glass, aluminium | Kitchen, dining room, living room | Integrated LED, E27 |
| Vintage outdoor | Aluminium, iron, glass, bronze or black | Outdoors, terrace | E27 |
Antique Art Deco wall light: which codes to reuse?
Art Deco is recognised by its geometric lines and its pairings of brass and crystal. The bulbs are compact, often G9 or E14, which allows fine shapes. A brass and crystal wall light, like this brass G9 wall light, illustrates this register. It lights in a halo and works well as a pair along a wall.
Boho chic wall light: which shapes and finishes?
Ring, flower, round: soft shapes define boho chic, with gold or white finishes and materials such as acrylic or linen. These models pair well with a light wall and discreet main lighting. To widen the search, also look at the glass wall lights.
Which living room wall light to choose for powerful light?
In a living room, a wall light replaces an accent lamp without taking up floor space. For powerful light, models with an E27 socket take a more generous bulb, up to 40 or 60 W depending on the model, while versions with an integrated LED deliver a constant warm white. Gold or black finishes suit both.
The choice then comes down to function: a reading corner needs a directed beam, a wall or a mirror calls for diffuse light. For a selection already sorted by use, see living room wall lighting.
Modern living room wall light: which lines to favour?
If your interior is contemporary, choose a compact format and a plain finish. A compact, plain format fades into the wall and lets the light speak. All-metal formats give this clean look, with no frills.
Powerful living room wall light: which socket and wattage to aim for?
It all depends on the bulb: an E27 socket takes a high-output bulb, an integrated LED wall light shows a fixed wattage, often 8, 10 or 14 W. A gold E14 wall light, 25 cm long, is enough for an accent wall. For real output, aim for an E27 model.
How to light a staircase, hallway or toilet with an antique wall light?
In a staircase or hallway, repeat the same wall light at regular intervals to avoid shadow areas, mounting it higher than shoulder height so it does not glare. In a toilet, a small format directed downwards is enough to light without glare.
Allow one wall light every two or three metres in a hallway, and one per flight in a staircase, aligned at the same height. Repetition creates a rhythm and avoids the isolated bright point that draws the eye. These configurations are gathered in the hallways and entrances. Stairwells are covered in the staircase wall lights.
Staircase wall light: how to repeat it on the way up?
Align the wall lights on a continuous line, at the same distance from the stair nosing, keeping the same orientation. A black E14 model at 8 W, 23 cm high, repeats discreetly over five or six landings. Black wall lights blend into a dark wall.
Design toilet wall light and toilet wall light: which discreet format?
In a toilet, a compact format directed downwards limits glare. A glass model 25 cm long stays discreet above a washbasin, and grazing light on a light wall makes the room feel bigger. Small diameters are often found among the round wall lights, a useful lead when space is short.
Which antique bathroom wall light resists humidity?
An antique bathroom wall light must resist splashes: models rated IP44 are protected against splashing, while IP20 stays reserved for dry areas, away from the washbasin and shower. Glass and metal wipe clean with a soft cloth.
In practice, aim for IP44 above a washbasin or in a damp, poorly ventilated room. More than 60 cm from a water point, IP20 is fine. Also check the socket: an E14 or a compact LED bulb fits more easily above a mirror than a large E27. The selection by room is found in the bathroom models.
Antique glass wall light: what look in a bathroom?
Glass diffuses light without softening it completely and wipes easily. A cream marbled glass gives enveloping light on a tiled wall. That is the look of Anthéa in bronze and glass, a wall light with a cream marbled glass shade, E27 socket and warm white.
IP20 or IP44: which to choose near a washbasin?
Near a washbasin, choose IP44: this rating covers water splashes. IP20 is fine everywhere else in the room, away from water points. Neither removes the need to switch off the power before installation.
Which antique outdoor waterproof wall light to choose?
Outdoors, an antique waterproof wall light is chosen according to its exposure: IP44 for a facade sheltered under a canopy, IP65 for direct exposure to rain. Models in aluminium, metal or iron with glass resist the weather, with an E27 socket or an LED bulb.
A facade wall light serves to mark an entrance or light a terrace wall. Place it around 1.80 m from the ground for accent lighting, higher if it needs to cover a wide area. The bronze and black versions match joinery. These references appear in the full Designix range.
Waterproof outdoor wall light: IP44 or IP65?
Under a canopy or a roof overhang, IP44 is enough. On a wall exposed to full south or by the sea, go for IP65: Hylo in IP65 for an exposed facade combines metal, iron and glass in a 24 cm x 43 cm x 16 cm format.
Antique style on a facade: metal, iron and glass
Metal and iron hold their outdoor patina better than polished brass, which needs more care. Glass protects the bulb and washes with clear water. To stay within all-metal wall lights, look for a bronze or black finish rather than bare metal.
Which socket and wattage for an antique brass or bronze wall light?
The socket determines the bulb: E27 for broad, powerful light, E14 for a small shade, G9 and G4 for compact formats in glass or crystal. A wall light with an integrated LED delivers a warm white with no bulb to change, and some models take a dimmer.
Brass and bronze affect the tone more than the performance: they warm a white wall, patina over time and pair with dark wood. The useful wattage depends on the bulb, not the metal.
| Socket | Bulb type | Recommended use | Stated colour temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| E27 | Screw bulb, up to 40 or 60 W depending on the model | Living room, outdoors, large shade | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K |
| E14 | Small screw bulb | Hallway, bedroom, short shade | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K |
| G9 | Compact bulb | Design wall light in glass or crystal | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K |
| G4 | Very small bulb | Slim wall light in crystal or acrylic | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K |
| Integrated LED | Non-replaceable bulb | Constant lighting, flat format | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K |
Antique brass wall light: E27, E14, G9 or G4?
Brass mainly dresses compact formats, in G9 or E14. But a large brass arm takes an E27: brass wall light with large E27 arm, H 490 mm, designed for a bulb up to 40W. The format follows the use: compact for a hallway, tall for a living room.
Powerful LED wall light: integrated bulb or screw bulb?
An integrated LED cannot be replaced: it lasts, but locks in the wattage. A screw bulb leaves the choice of output and colour temperature. If you want to adjust the brightness, check that the model takes a dimmer. Models with a fixed bulb are gathered in the LED wall lights.
How to install and care for an antique wall light?
Installation starts by switching off the power and locating the cables before drilling. The wall light is usually placed at shoulder height in a hallway, higher in a staircase, and around one metre above a worktop. A soft cloth is then enough, with no abrasive product on the brass or glass.
Drill, fix the backplate, connect the wires according to the instructions, then screw in the bulb. Small formats, around 21.5 cm in diameter or 25 cm long, mount above a mirror or in a narrow passage. Large models, up to 49 cm high, need a clear wall. A G4 model like Uare in crystal and acrylic stays slim and takes a dimmer, handy in a bedroom.
At what height should a wall light be mounted in a hallway or living room?
In a hallway, allow 1.50 to 1.70 m from the ground, above shoulder height to avoid glare. In a living room, an accent wall light is mounted between 1.60 and 1.80 m; above a worktop, around one metre. These are usage guides, to adjust according to your walls and furniture.
Caring for brass, bronze and glass without abrasive products
Brass and bronze patina: a soft cloth is enough to remove dust, with no abrasive paste that would erase the finish. Glass and acrylic wash with warm soapy water, then dry. Always switch off the power before removing a shade or changing a bulb.
The collection offers E27, E14, G9 and G4 sockets depending on the model. Unsure about the socket or the height before drilling? Write to us with a photo of your wall, and we will answer on the exact model.
Frequently asked questions about the antique wall light
What is the lighting style of the 70s?
Lighting from the 70s mixes brass, bronze and glass, with round shapes, rings and opaque shades. In our antique wall lights, this spirit appears in the gold or bronze finishes, the E14 and E27 sockets and the warm white light from 2700 to 3500 K.
What is an original wall light?
An original wall light stands out through an unusual shape or material: ring, flower, tube, marbled glass, crystal or brushed brass. It adds an accent point on a wall, without taking up floor space, and pairs with discreet main lighting.
What is an antique Art Deco wall light?
The Art Deco wall light reuses the codes of the 1920s and 1930s: geometric lines, brass or bronze, glass or crystal, visible bulbs in G9 or E14. It lights in a halo and is used as a pair on a living room wall, either side of a mirror or along a staircase.
Which antique brass wall light to choose?
Brass is chosen for the warmth it brings to a light room: a brass and crystal model in G9 for a hallway, a brass wall light in E27 for a living room. The gold finish matches dark wood as well as white walls.
How to get a powerful LED wall light?
The useful wattage depends on the bulb. A wall light with an E27 socket takes a high-output bulb, while models with an integrated LED show a fixed wattage, often 8, 10 or 14 W depending on the product. The light output matters more than the figure alone.
