A 12V LED downlight is powered by a transformer or driver that steps down the mains voltage: it stands apart from a 230V downlight, which is wired directly. It is installed wherever that low voltage is available or easy to run. Three decisions drive the choice: the mounting, recessed or surface-mounted; the light colour; the ingress protection rating.
What is a 12V LED downlight and which rooms is it for?
The 41 12V LED downlights in this collection receive low voltage through a transformer or driver that steps down the mains voltage: that is what sets them apart from a 230V downlight wired directly. They are installed in a suspended ceiling, under a cabinet, on a staircase, in a camper van or a van, wherever 12V is already present or easy to run.
12V LED lighting at home: which rooms and which uses?
At home, it is mainly used for accent lighting and ambient light: under wall cabinets, in a niche, on a stair tread, above a headboard. It also suits suspended ceilings when one transformer feeds several points. For a living room finish, downlights designed for the living room favour a wide beam, while a hallway calls for low, non-glaring light.
12V or 24V low voltage: what changes in the wiring
24V carries the same energy at a lower current: voltage drop over a long run is therefore less pronounced, which matters in a van or over a long stretch of suspended ceiling. In 12V, shorter runs or a more generous cable cross-section are accepted. The rest of the lighting range follows the same supply logic.
| Room or use | Recommended mounting | Light setting | Point to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Recessed in a suspended ceiling or surface-mounted on a solid ceiling | Wide beam, adjustable for accents | Position relative to the sofa and walls |
| Kitchen | Recessed above the worktop | Light directed onto the worktop | Ingress protection if the downlight is near the sink |
| Bedroom | Recessed or surface-mounted, aimed at the wall | Warm light, dimming for the evening | Compatibility with a dimmer |
| Staircase and hallway | Recessed in the partition or surface-mounted | Low, non-glaring light | 12V supply available nearby |
| Bathroom and damp room | Recessed, suited to the zone | White in front of the mirror | Ingress protection suited to moisture |
| Camper van, van, boat | Surface-mounted under a cabinet or recessed in the panel | Warm, diffused light | Direct connection to the 12V circuit, local switch |
Recessed 12V LED downlight or surface-mounted 12V LED downlight: how to choose?
A recessed downlight sits inside a suspended ceiling or a hollow partition and disappears into the surface; it requires a cut-out and sufficient depth. A surface-mounted downlight is fixed directly to the substrate: it suits solid ceilings, exposed renovation wiring and volumes that cannot be drilled.
Recessed 12V LED downlight: what to check before drilling
Three measurements decide it: the cut-out diameter, the depth available behind the surface and the space left for the cable and the driver. On a vehicle partition or a thin panel, the thickness may be lacking and surface mounting becomes the only option. Adjustable recessed models add a bulk constraint linked to the swivel joint.
12V LED downlight with transformer: how to choose it
The transformer or driver must cover the sum of the connected light points, with a safety margin, and its output voltage must match that of the downlights. It must also be compatible with dimming if you plan to fit a dimmer. A driver housed in a hot or enclosed space heats up more.
220V downlight or 12V LED downlight: which solution to choose?
230V is wired directly to the mains and avoids the transformer; 12V requires a driver but remains the solution for battery installations and for places where a thin cable is easier to conceal. The decision is made on the available power source and the mounting location, not on wattage alone.
12V downlight on battery or on mains: the decisive criterion
If the point must work without mains, away from a vehicle or during an outage, the battery dictates 12V. If mains is present and standard cabling runs through conduit, 230V simplifies the whole setup. An outdoor installation near a garden is often handled in 12V low voltage, to be completed with a suitable 12V outdoor light.
12V LED bulbs and bases: getting it right
A bi-pin base corresponds to low-voltage luminaires, a large bayonet base to 230V sockets: the bulb holder must be read before any purchase. 12V LED bulbs exist in both families, with distinct supply voltages. The luminaire datasheet decides, and our lighting catalogue states the base of each reference.
| Criterion | 12V LED downlight | 230V LED downlight |
|---|---|---|
| Supply | Transformer or driver that steps down the voltage | Direct connection to the domestic mains |
| Mounting | Thin cable, suited to vehicle panels and suspended ceilings | Standard cabling, in the installation conduit |
| Typical use | Camper van, van, boat, off-grid home | Home rooms, renovation, replacement of existing points |
| Dimming | Depends on a driver or a downlight designed for dimming | Depends on a dimmer suited to the downlight |
| Watch point | Voltage, cable cross-section and driver power | Dimmer compatibility and insulation |
12V LED lighting on battery: camper van, van and home
On battery, 12V lighting connects directly to the vehicle circuit or to an auxiliary battery, without a converter. It is used in camper vans, converted vans and homes equipped with solar panels. The available voltage, the cable cross-section and any switch on the downlight are checked.
12V LED lighting in a camper van: the points to wire
Locate the auxiliary circuit, provide a fuse per outgoing line and match the cross-section to the run length: it is voltage drop that weakens the most distant points. A solar kit completes the installation when the vehicle stays parked; solar downlights with no wiring cover the outdoors without running a cable.
12V LED downlight in a camper van: with or without a switch?
A downlight with an integrated switch avoids adding a control to the panel: you switch on near the bed or the dining area, without running an extra cable. This is useful when the existing wiring does not allow a wall switch to be fitted. In a converted bedroom, bedroom models favour warm, discreet light.
Which light for a 12V LED downlight: colour, temperature and ingress protection?
Colour temperature sets the mood: the lower the kelvin value, the warmer and more restful the light; the higher it goes, the whiter and more stimulating it becomes. The ingress protection rating indicates resistance to water and dust, a key point in damp rooms and outdoors.
White or black LED downlights: which to choose?
White blends into a light ceiling or wall and almost disappears once switched off. Black asserts the presence of the downlight and draws a sharp contrast on a dark wall or an exposed structure. Compare the discreet white finishes and the black versions according to the look you want.
Colour temperature and IP rating: the markers before buying
As a general guide, warm light sits around 2700 to 3000K, neutral white around 4000K, cool white above 5000K. For protection, IP44 is rarely undercut in a damp room and IP65 is the target outdoors in exposed spots. A frosted diffuser softens the beam in a living space; downlights with a crafted design often play that card.
How to make 12V LED lighting adjustable?
12V lighting is made adjustable with a compatible dimmer: either a dimmable driver controlled by a switch or a dedicated control, or a downlight designed for dimming. Adjustability completes the setup: the downlight is turned towards the worktop, a picture or a wall rather than left fixed.
12V LED downlight with dimmer: what must be compatible
The dimmer, the driver and the downlight form a chain: if one of the three is not designed for dimming, the result is flickering, buzzing or an unusable range. Check compatibility before fixing, or go straight to sets that are coherent by switching to dimming provided from the outset.
Adjustable 12V LED downlight: when to aim rather than fix straight down?
A fixed downlight lights straight beneath it: perfect for general lighting. An adjustable downlight aims elsewhere, at a worktop, a niche or a picture, and is set after installation. On one line, the two are often mixed. Adjustable downlights for aiming at a wall are chosen according to the useful rotation range.
12V LED downlight or LED ceiling light: how to light a living room ceiling?
Recessed downlights give a distributed, discreet light, useful for general lighting or a worktop. An LED ceiling light brings a more pronounced central piece and often replaces a chandelier. In a living room, the two are frequently combined: ceiling light for ambience, adjustable downlights for accents.
Modern LED ceiling light or living room LED chandelier: which light in the centre?
A ceiling light diffuses downwards or to the sides depending on its shape, and takes little ceiling height. A chandelier hangs down into the room and marks the volume more. The choice depends on the available height and the furniture, with central light generally set warmer than the accents.
Powerful LED wall light or adjustable 12V downlight: what to choose on the wall?
A wall light illuminates a wall diffusely, often upwards and downwards, and works as ambient light. A surface-mounted adjustable downlight takes its place when the goal is a directed beam, provided 12V reaches that point. For a contemporary decor, modern downlights pair well with a central ceiling light, and the whole lighting catalogue lets you keep the same family of finishes from one room to another. To choose a powerful LED wall light or a powerful LED ceiling light, compare watts and lumens: a wall light often sits around 10 to 15W and 1000 to 1500 lumens, a ceiling light around 20 to 30W and 2000 to 3000 lumens, with an efficiency of at least 80 lumens per watt.
How to install and maintain a 12V LED downlight?
Cut the power before any work, check the voltage and the permissible power of the transformer, then connect the downlight observing the polarities. Maintenance is limited to dry dusting of the lens; a flickering downlight almost always signals an undersized supply or a loose connection.
Installing a recessed downlight: the steps to follow
Mark the locations, drill at the stated cut-out diameter, run the cable and the driver, connect, then clip the downlight in. Check that the springs hold and that the seal is clean in a damp room. For mounting above a worktop, models designed to light the worktop are installed in a regular line.
Maintenance: cleaning an LED downlight without damaging it
A dry or slightly damp cloth is enough on the lens; abrasive products scratch the diffuser and dull the finish. Check the connections once a year and look for any sign of heat around the driver. On recessed lines, recessed dimming sets are checked by pushing the dimmer through its full range, and a housing in metal downlights is dusted in the same way as a painted model.

Frequently asked questions about 12V LED downlights
What is the price of an LED downlight?
The price depends on the format, material, finish and supply of the model: a simple recessed downlight is not at the same level as an adjustable metal downlight or a model intended for outdoors. The price of each reference is shown on its product page, in the collection, and is updated with the catalogue.
Why does an LED downlight flicker?
Flickering most often comes from the supply: an undersized transformer or driver, incompatible with a dimmer, or poorly connected. A loose connection, reversed polarity on a 12V setup or too many downlights on one driver also cause repeated cut-outs. The supply is checked first, then the connections.
Cuttable LED strip, how does it work?
A cuttable LED strip has regular cutting marks: cut only at these marks, never between two LEDs, otherwise the section loses its supply. Each piece is then connected with a connector or a wire, observing the strip voltage and polarity. The length remaining after cutting depends on the cut pitch.
12V LED lighting on battery: how does it work?
12V lighting on battery works without a converter: the downlights are powered directly by the vehicle battery, an auxiliary battery or a solar kit. Cables are sized according to the run length and the number of light points, and the circuit is protected by a fuse. The voltage drops as the battery discharges.
12V LED downlight in a camper van with a switch: is it useful?
A downlight with an integrated switch avoids adding a control to the panel: you switch the light point on directly, near the bed or the dining area. This is handy in a camper van as in a van, especially when the existing wiring does not allow an extra switch to be fitted. The switch sits on the downlight or on the supply cable.
