First check the space above the ceiling and the power supply: at 12V, a spotlight is never wired directly to the mains, it goes through a transformer that steps the voltage down. The IP65 rating then allows installation in a wet room, under a canopy or on a covered terrace.

What is a 12V IP65 spotlight and which room should it go in?

A 12V IP65 spotlight runs on very low voltage: it is powered by a transformer that steps down the 230V mains supply. The IP65 rating protects it from dust and water spray, which makes it suitable for bathrooms, wet rooms and sheltered outdoor areas such as canopies or covered terraces.

12V IP65 spotlight: what very low voltage changes

12V requires a transformer or LED driver housed above the ceiling. The spotlight never receives mains voltage: if the existing supply comes from an old halogen setup, check that it accepts LED modules, otherwise you get flickering and dropouts. The result stays understated: a grazing light on a splashback, a soft halo on a wall, aligned points with no protrusion. Adjustable spotlights take over when the beam needs to hit a precise surface.

12V IP65 spotlight in the shower: what the IP rating allows

IP65 covers water spray, which is what a shower wall is exposed to. What still needs checking on site is that the seal sits properly against the ceiling, that the recess housing holds firm and that the power supply is protected. Outside the shower zone, a simple recessed model is enough for the basin and circulation areas. The product instructions and local installation rules are the reference.

How to choose a 12V IP65 recessed spotlight

The choice comes down to four points: the spotlight base, the type of 12V power supply, the shape of the housing and the light colour. An adjustable model suits areas where the beam needs to hit a wall or a worktop, while an ultra-slim one fits into a shallow ceiling.

Criteria to compare on a 12V IP65 spotlight
Criterion What to look at Why it matters
Voltage 12V very low voltage, powered by a transformer Determines the power supply needed above the ceiling
IP rating IP65 marking Resists dust and water spray
Base Spotlight and lamp base (GU5.3, G4 depending on model) An incompatible base prevents installation
Mounting type Recessed, adjustable or ultra-slim Depends on ceiling depth and the area to light
Colour White, black or metal finish Must match the ceiling and the rest of the room
Light Colour temperature and beam angle Avoids shade differences from one room to another

12V IP65 spotlight with transformer: built-in or remote?

A built-in transformer sits inside the housing and simplifies installation when the ceiling offers space. A remote model powers several points and can be replaced without dismantling the lighting, which counts during maintenance. The decision rests on the height available above the ceiling and access to that area.

12V IP65 LED spotlight: which light to choose?

Generally, a warm white around 2700 to 3000K suits living rooms and bedrooms, a neutral white around 4000K suits worktops and circulation areas. Keep a single shade per room to avoid visible differences from one point to another. A narrow beam concentrates light, a wide beam spreads it. Metal spotlights and spotlights with a crafted design are chosen mainly for the line they draw on the ceiling.

How to wire spotlights in series or parallel

At 12V, spotlights are most often wired in parallel from the transformer: each point keeps its own supply and the others keep lighting if one fails. Series wiring makes all spotlights depend on the same circuit: one faulty lamp switches off the whole set.

Series or parallel: which wiring for a 12V SELV spotlight?

Parallel remains the standard for this type of installation: each spotlight receives the same voltage and troubleshooting is limited to the point at fault. The number of spotlights a transformer supports depends on the power stated by the manufacturer and the load actually connected, never on a fixed figure. The instructions are the reference. Dimmable-compatible models are installed on the same wiring principle.

What happens when a spotlight blows on a series circuit

Everything goes out: the circuit is open. You then check spotlight by spotlight, starting with the one that has been used most. This is why series wiring is reserved for cases explicitly covered by the equipment instructions. If you control ambient dimming, dimmable LED spotlights are wired the same way.

How to lay out spotlights on the ceiling

First draw the room plan, then align the spotlights with the areas to light: worktop, walkway, basin. The spacing between two points depends on the ceiling height and the beam angle: the higher the ceiling, the further apart the spotlights go to avoid dark zones.

How to distribute spotlights in a rectangular room

Draw axes parallel to the walls, then place the points on those lines rather than in a staggered pattern. Mark in pencil before drilling, checking the spacing against tall units, beams and dropped ceiling sections. For a hallway and for living room spotlights, a regular grid gives a calmer light than an improvised layout. Remember to light a hallway with points aligned along the circulation axis.

Adjustable or fixed spotlight: how to direct the beam?

An adjustable model is justified when a surface needs angled lighting: splashback, accent wall, pictures. A fixed one suits a walkway or a room where light should fall straight down. Aim before tightening, then check there is no glare from the positions in use.

How many spotlights in a kitchen?

There is no single number: the count depends on the floor area, ceiling height, beam angle and the areas to be treated separately. The worktop, sink, splashback and walkways are lit as distinct zones, rather than spreading points at random.

Worktop, sink, splashback: which areas to treat separately?

Each area calls for a different beam. On the worktop, an adjustable point aimed at the surface keeps you from working in your own shadow. Above the sink and splashback, a more grazing light brings out the materials. Kitchen lighting is thus composed by use, not by ceiling symmetry.

Floor area and ceiling height: what changes the number of spotlights

The same room needs fewer points under a low ceiling than under a high one, where the beam widens and loses useful intensity. Also allow for tall units, which intercept the light. Recessed kitchen spotlights cover the common case, and a contemporary look pairs well with clean-lined kitchens.

12V IP65 spotlight: which mistakes to avoid before buying?

The most common mistake is ordering a 12V spotlight without checking the existing power supply, then pairing an old transformer with LED modules. Next come an incompatible base, an inconsistent light colour from one room to another and a forgotten ceiling depth.

Wiring a 12V spotlight to 230V: why it is impossible

The module is designed for a much lower supply voltage, provided by the transformer. Connecting it to the mains destroys it immediately. Before any purchase, identify what already powers the existing points and note the transformer or driver model, as well as the base of the current lamps.

Check the existing power supply before ordering

Three readings prevent a product return: the output voltage of the power supply, the base of the existing sockets and the diameter of the existing cut-out. If you keep an old transformer designed for halogen, expect flickering with LEDs. Black recessed spotlights and black recessed LED spotlights are installed with exactly the same checks.

Colours, formats and style: which 12V IP65 spotlight for which room?

The colour is chosen with the ceiling: white to blend into a light painted ceiling, black to make a statement in a room with a dark ceiling or a bold style. The format follows the use: adjustable above a worktop, ultra-slim in a dropped ceiling, discreet in a hallway.

Which 12V IP65 spotlight by room or area
Room or area What the spotlight lights Preferred mounting What to check
Bathroom, shower zone Ambience and shower wall IP65 recessed Seal seating and recess housing
Bathroom, outside shower Basin, mirror, circulation Recessed or adjustable Light colour with the mirror
Kitchen, worktop Worktop, sink, splashback Adjustable aimed at the worktop Position relative to tall units
Kitchen, circulation Walkways and dining corner Fixed recessed Regular spacing between points
Hallway Movement, line of light Aligned recessed Alignment and space in the dropped ceiling
Sheltered outdoor, canopy or covered terrace Entrance and facade IP65 recessed spotlight Protected power supply and accessible transformer

White or black spotlight: how to decide?

White disappears into a light ceiling and visually enlarges a small wet room. Black creates a deliberate contrast, especially on a dark or concrete ceiling. White finishes remain the safe choice for a discreet renovation, black spotlights make more of a statement.

Modern, design or metal: which look in a wet room?

A metal finish brings a more material look, a crafted line stands out on the ceiling. For soft light in a bedroom, stay with a discreet shade and a wide beam. The rest of the catalogue is visible in our lighting catalogue.

How to maintain a 12V IP65 spotlight and preserve its seal

The seal of an IP65 spotlight depends on its gasket and the cleanliness of the cut-out. Clean the glass with a soft damp cloth, without abrasive products, and check the gasket after any work in the dropped ceiling. A crushed or displaced gasket means the spray protection is lost.

Cleaning a bathroom spotlight without damaging the gasket

Cut the power before any handling, wipe the glass without pressing on the gasket, and use no abrasive product. If the glass looks misted from the inside, it means the gasket is no longer doing its job: better to replace the spotlight than to force it.

After installation: what to check on the ceiling

Check that the gasket sits evenly against the ceiling, that no housing moves in its cut-out and that the transformer remains accessible. Keep an access margin above the ceiling for white recessed spotlights as for any other model.

Frequently asked questions

12V IP65 spotlight with transformer: built-in or separate?

A built-in transformer sits inside the spotlight housing and simplifies installation when the ceiling offers space. A separate or remote transformer powers several spotlights and can be replaced without dismantling the lighting. The choice depends on the space available and access above the ceiling.

Can a 12V IP65 spotlight be installed in the shower?

The IP65 rating protects the spotlight from dust and water spray, which matches the exposure of a shower zone. What still needs checking on site is the recess housing, the seal seating and the protection of the power supply. The product instructions and local installation rules are the reference.

12V IP65 SELV spotlight: what is very low voltage?

Very low voltage means a 12V supply, obtained through a transformer that steps down the 230V mains. The spotlight therefore never receives mains voltage directly. This means checking compatibility between the existing transformer and the type of module installed.

12V IP65 recessed spotlight: what cut-out should be planned in the ceiling?

The cut-out depends on the housing diameter and the ceiling depth: both values appear on the product sheet and are measured before drilling. A template or a mark drawn with a compass limits discrepancies, and the recess must leave the gasket seated.

12V IP65 LED spotlight: is a specific transformer needed?

An LED module does not behave like a halogen lamp: the transformer must be designed to power LEDs and to handle the load actually connected. An old transformer paired with LED modules causes flickering or switch-off. The compatibility stated by the manufacturer is the reference.
